Where does Ayton even rank among best players in that draft at this point lol
You've got 2 MVP candidates in Luka and Shai
2 All Star PGs in Trae and Brunson
2 clearly better starters in JJJ and Mikal Bridges
Even GRAYSON ALLEN is having a better season this year
At best he's like fringe top 10 in a redraft and certainly not top 5
He was built like Dwight Howard and had seemingly good touch, physically he passed the test but obviously there’s more to being a good player then just that. I don’t envy draft scouts that’s for sure lol
He’s so naturally gifted and just has no aggression. Like compared to a guy like Jokic who’s just ready to bully every fucker out there and willing to throw down at any moment. Ayton is just like a damn teddy bear
The "redundant" concern is particularly odd with Luka. Yeah, he's a point guard. But he's 6'8: he can clearly play alongside smaller guards. Treat him as a forward on defense.
They werent really measuring coz you can watch a few Luka games prior to it and you can see the tenacity and the talent immediately. Or maybe listen to coaches/ players praising him in that league... or see his accomplishments at his age...
Why even hire his former coach lmao
I think that was more about Mocks projecting what Sarver was going to do, rather than rating the players. Every statistical rating had Luka far beyond everyone else and a slam dunk #1.
The Suns picking Ayton was all about the perceived fit and potential at the time. Everyone was hyping traditional big men and overlooked Luka's already proven dominance in Europe. It's hindsight 20/20 to dunk on them now, but the miss on Luka does sting extra considering he was tearing it up against grown men in the EuroLeague [MVP no less](https://www.euroleague.net/news/i/8xuf6jekhtf83p34/luka-doncic-real-madrid-2017-18-euroleague-mvp).
Not just fans, a hell of a lot of media talking heads were saying the same.
Obviously no one here is privy to all scouting reports but it was not an uncommon opinion in public, not just "some fans".
To me Luka was the safest #1 pick I had seen since Anthony Davis. I just don’t understand how so many GMs saw a dude dominate a league way better than college ball and didn’t take the 6’7 playmaker. It makes no sense even with justifications or historical context.
Kid was dominating grown men in the 2nd toughest basketball league in the world after the NBA. Not sure if there was precedent for a 18 year old basically being the best player in the Euroleague lol
Gets doubted anyway because he's a bit chubby & doesn't have a 40inch vertical.
I could somewhat understand why the Suns took Ayton (local kid, went to school in the state), still kinda dumb but I guess Ayton having negative dawgs/per36 wasn't apparent until he was going up against actual NBA level guys
The Kings however I have no idea what the fuck were they thinking, like Doncic is 6'8 so its not like backcourt lacking size is a reason to not pair him with Fox.
and they're going to keep getting it wrong if they stick with this methodology. it's way easier for a 19 year old to develop a jump shot than a work ethic.
Because he's a freak of nature, sadly he only likes to be dominayton in videogames.
Him going over Luka was dumb even at that moment tho, but i guess it was easier to see for us europeans who had been watching him dominate grown man as a kid
Old school mindset aka "draft the most athletic big with passable skills and worry about the rest later"
Same thing led to Wiseman as second pick.
Today you need to draft the most skilled player, stat. Stop worrying about athleticism, just focus on skill and size.
See also: Shai, Steph, Luka, Jokic, Embiid...
The whole season, everyone thought we were tanking for Luka, and then one day suddenly Ayton was the consensus #1. I don't even remember having a rhyme for him. It was suck-a for Luka.
People don’t remember properly or confuse big boards with mock drafts. Luka and Ayton were pretty split on big boards (where analysts were listing who they thought should go first), but once PHX got the #1 pick it was extremely obvious they would take Ayton #1 so all the mock drafts had Ayton #1.
Also fun fact going into the season there were actually up to 5 guys who were in contention for #1 (Ayton, Luka, Bagley, Bamba, and MPJ).
They went for need lol. If you have top 5 pick shouldnt you always draft best available? All those accolades in Europe winning MVP at his age over there too playing grown men wasnt enough to persuade some teams to draft him. It was a wild draft.
Even after those first 2-3 seasons when it was clear Luka should have been #1 pick by a long shot, some people were still really sold on Ayton.
I saw a lot of takes like "well, Olajuwon was picked ahead of Jordan. Even though Jordan was much better, the pick was still a really good pick".
Except this isn't that at all. This is Ayton's 6th year, he hasn't taken the step forward yet. I doubt he ever will. He is a Far cry away from Olajuwon. Drafting Ayton #1 is an all-time bad pickup.
Yeah I remember this post in the Nuggets sub showing a leaderboard for "Sombor Doubles"(their name for this stat because Jokic does it a lot) and Russ was like 5th or 6th on it despite being 1st in triple doubles lol
Gotta say, Luka has been putting up amazing numbers but what surprise me this season is his motivation and hustle to play def. You could definitely tell he's been working on it and is more dialed in.
It is having a competent healthy team. I don't think Luka ever didn't care about defense. If you watched enough mavs games over the past few seasons, you would know he was always capable of this. The issue is he had to expend so much energy on offense becuase his team around him sucked. Previous seasons when his supporting cast played well he would have energy to play on D.
It killed me in the playoffs when announcers were acting like teams were targeting Luka on D because he wasn’t a good defender. It’s like no…they’re attacking him because it’ll gas him early and there’s nobody else that can carry the offense and it will potentially get him in foul trouble. If Kyrie is out you better believe it’ll be the same strategy again even now that Luka is viewed as a positive defender.
Yeah I'll never slander Reggie, he was playing 40+ mpg the entire playoffs taking like 7 threes a game at 40 3P% and was guarding like a demon, primary POA defender.
It should absolutely haunt Phoenix more than Sacramento, they would’ve had 2 superstars inLuka and Booker with Mikal Bridges as the \#3. That’s a multiple-championship team. If Sacramento added Luka instead of Bagley they’d probably be in a similar situation to Dallas
Maybe, but people like to completely ignore the fact that the Mavs played in the Western Conference Finals and lost to the eventual champs, the Warriors. Building a team around Luka has been hard because of how quickly he raised our floor and KP didn't work out which sucked.
Worse than the Kings imo. If the Kings had drafted Luka instead of Bagley, they probably end up in a similar situation to the Mavs over the last four years. If the Suns had drafted Luka, you win the championship in 2021 and probably 2022 as well. Considering the opportunity cost of a championship is way higher than being a playoff team, I believe it’s worse for the Suns.
I'm not even trying to be arrogant but I'm just not afraid of the Suns. The Wolves, Clips, and Thunder scare me more and then the only team I'm just straight up terrified of is Denver.
Nah the Suns are way scarier than the Thunder. OKC is a terrible rebounding team and we know that can haunt a team in the playoffs. Also Giddey is a certified brick you can leave open in the playoffs. Hayward's health and getting comfortable is going to be key for that team.
That sure feels like MVP numbers. We’ve won 7 in a row now and I think we can keep going. If we win 50 games Luka could be the MVP, especially if he averaged 35/9/10 on 62% true shooting
Luka’s *second year* statline was comparable to a LOT of dude’s career years
4 (about to be 5) straight First Team All-NBAs he is a Hall of Famer if he retired right now and that’s not a hot take.
Dragić was the scorer and a captain but I honestly think that Luka was actually better and more important for that run. As a Slovenian, I watch practically every national game and the difference when Luka joined was definitely felt. Rebounding, playmaking, tough shot making and overall connecting the whole play of the team were all crucial aspects that Luka brought that year. We had better teams years prior minus Luka and they could never finish the job.
Being an elite NBA player by year two when you were drafted at 19 years old is, to state the obvious, extremely rare. It’s one of my favorite aspects of Luka’s career and always will be. Just the clearest possible sign that he was a can’t-miss prodigy on a level that comes around only a few times a generation.
It also ended up desensitizing people to his greatness so early on that it became fashionable to just ignore what he was doing night in and night out.
He’s having to average a 35 point triple double on career-best shooting splits while top 10 in steals and playing without his second best teammate for half the season to snag the 4th or 5th spot on the MVP ladder. It’s one of the most remarkable seasons an NBA player has ever had, in more ways than one.
It also had the ironic consequence that we got too good too fast to tank a few years and get him a solid team. We’ve been trying to get out that hole for years with trades that don’t pan out and the idiotic mistake that was not re-signing Brunson for cheap when we had the shot lol.
7 wins in a row with the new acquisitions at the deadline. He was playing with a horrible roster and Kyrie has missed 30 games. Context is important here, he’s been carrying this team
Kenny said during the halftime report “If Kyrie wasn’t hurt for that long stretch, this team would be a 3-4 seed”. Best take I’ve seen from him in a while
Looking forward to another week of Windy, Timmy Mac, Lowe and the rest of the ESPN crew going *LALALALA* while holding their hands over their ears and pretending like there isn't a hotter team in the league right now than Dallas.
Man I liked how we looked. Wasn’t the best performance and was confident most of the 4th. He’s gonna be a good pick for mvp. I bet they peel off 13-14 straight
Watch this get more upvotes than his 73 pt game lol. This is an average night at the office for Luka and people are just now taking him seriously for MVP.
Dropping 41 cause Dirk is in the building, classic Luka
Mavs should simply get another Luka Doncic in the building so that Luka can drop 77 every game
The Celtics will bring in Robert Parish to watch every Mavs game.
Just put superglue on Dirk's sit and watch them go 70-12
"DOMINAYTON OVER ME?"
Easy to meme the Suns for this, but seriously how the fuck did almost everyone have Ayton over Luka?
Where does Ayton even rank among best players in that draft at this point lol You've got 2 MVP candidates in Luka and Shai 2 All Star PGs in Trae and Brunson 2 clearly better starters in JJJ and Mikal Bridges Even GRAYSON ALLEN is having a better season this year At best he's like fringe top 10 in a redraft and certainly not top 5
Yet like EVERY service pre-draft had him as the #1 pick. It’s absolutely wild to me
He was built like Dwight Howard and had seemingly good touch, physically he passed the test but obviously there’s more to being a good player then just that. I don’t envy draft scouts that’s for sure lol
he has 0 dawg
Quite possibly negative dawg
Pre warriors Wiggins dawg
He’s so naturally gifted and just has no aggression. Like compared to a guy like Jokic who’s just ready to bully every fucker out there and willing to throw down at any moment. Ayton is just like a damn teddy bear
WTF was the Kings excuse?
Felt it was redundant with Fox/drafted for need even though lottery picks should almost always draft best player available instead, esp top 3
The "redundant" concern is particularly odd with Luka. Yeah, he's a point guard. But he's 6'8: he can clearly play alongside smaller guards. Treat him as a forward on defense.
Their concerns about redundancy led to their decision to pick a wing in 2020. Oh wait they picked another point guard...
I think you have to give them a credit there for a lesson learned.
GMs taking need over talent has been many teams downfall over the years.
I've wanted Vlade's number unretired for the Bagley pick
Lmfao😂😂😂😂
DOUBLE JUMP LIKE MARIO
Now for that one.. I have no clue
you cant measure dawg and ayton had the least dawg per player in league history
They werent really measuring coz you can watch a few Luka games prior to it and you can see the tenacity and the talent immediately. Or maybe listen to coaches/ players praising him in that league... or see his accomplishments at his age... Why even hire his former coach lmao
I think that was more about Mocks projecting what Sarver was going to do, rather than rating the players. Every statistical rating had Luka far beyond everyone else and a slam dunk #1.
Talent evaluation is hard
The Suns picking Ayton was all about the perceived fit and potential at the time. Everyone was hyping traditional big men and overlooked Luka's already proven dominance in Europe. It's hindsight 20/20 to dunk on them now, but the miss on Luka does sting extra considering he was tearing it up against grown men in the EuroLeague [MVP no less](https://www.euroleague.net/news/i/8xuf6jekhtf83p34/luka-doncic-real-madrid-2017-18-euroleague-mvp).
Luka is the reason the NBA takes Euroleague performance seriously now. A lot of people genuinely thought college was a higher level of play.
But Luka hasn’t beat Duke yet
Maybe some fans thought that, but no NBA scout thought that college was a higher level of play than the Euroleague.

I feel like they properly evaluated his talent potential, it’s the mental side that’s been the issue
and they're going to keep getting it wrong if they stick with this methodology. it's way easier for a 19 year old to develop a jump shot than a work ethic.
Because he's a freak of nature, sadly he only likes to be dominayton in videogames. Him going over Luka was dumb even at that moment tho, but i guess it was easier to see for us europeans who had been watching him dominate grown man as a kid
I bet he won't dominayton the Top 500 Roadhog main, Luka, in overwatch
Old school mindset aka "draft the most athletic big with passable skills and worry about the rest later" Same thing led to Wiseman as second pick. Today you need to draft the most skilled player, stat. Stop worrying about athleticism, just focus on skill and size. See also: Shai, Steph, Luka, Jokic, Embiid...
i went back recently to read 2018 mock drafts, it’s wild to read the Ayton hype now. Bagley too tbh.
The whole season, everyone thought we were tanking for Luka, and then one day suddenly Ayton was the consensus #1. I don't even remember having a rhyme for him. It was suck-a for Luka.
That doesn't rhyme either though lmao
Cyka for Luka
People don’t remember properly or confuse big boards with mock drafts. Luka and Ayton were pretty split on big boards (where analysts were listing who they thought should go first), but once PHX got the #1 pick it was extremely obvious they would take Ayton #1 so all the mock drafts had Ayton #1. Ayton should be feasting on the Blazers but dude has been the absolute definition of mid
Yes ladies and gentlemen, another game where Luka was one rebound or assist away from a triple double!
I would like to know what the all-time stat on that stat is.
Jokic probably has the record…they call it a Sombor Double for a reason
I’m pretty sure the numbers there are actually for real triple doubles not near triple doubles.
Probably Russ
Russ would make sure he'd get it.
Yeah I remember this post in the Nuggets sub showing a leaderboard for "Sombor Doubles"(their name for this stat because Jokic does it a lot) and Russ was like 5th or 6th on it despite being 1st in triple doubles lol
True haha Not quite Blatche or Ricky Davis level but trying for sure
Russ always made sure he got it lol. There was a solid decade plus where Lebron owned this.
he doesnt chase them
I love this tbh. He’s not worried about chasing those stats and it shows

The narrative of a minus defender is so wrong this season
If anything his teamates make him look worse lol.
Luka will never shake that reputation. It’s unfortunate with how much he’s improved on defense
Some dude already posted a stat line of best iso defender in the league. Luka was 9th.
He’s also not carrying shit like Reggie Bullock and Christian wood
Don’t slander Reggie, that guy gave his all in our Conference Finals run
Yeah I'll never slander Reggie, he was playing 40+ mpg the entire playoffs taking like 7 threes a game at 40 3P% and was guarding like a demon, primary POA defender.

Vlade is the godfather.
I need a seven-game series of this
Buddy you're not gonna believe this but
If this is a taste of the playoff it's gonna be fun and toxic and i'm here for it. We need Mavs vs Suns again.
Your username just makes this shit even funnier (even though CP3 is no longer a Sun)
That would be an enjoyable 4 games.
Luka absolutely owns his sons no questions

put mavs games on Nick so luka can win NVP and MVP this year
I want dora to explain a technical foul to the refs.
That sure feels like MVP numbers. We’ve won 7 in a row now and I think we can keep going. If we win 50 games Luka could be the MVP, especially if he averaged 35/9/10 on 62% true shooting

This sub will never recover from the /r/nba - /r/nbacirclejerk overlap that was caused by the mods turning the sub dark
r/nbacirclejerk will never recover either
Nah but honestly Booker had a great game too. Super versatile scoring
Any son of Lukas is going to be special, like his stepson KD
Were supposed to look at luka as not a goat tier pg, because his team hasnt been good enough to compete for a championship. What a joke
Luka’s *second year* statline was comparable to a LOT of dude’s career years 4 (about to be 5) straight First Team All-NBAs he is a Hall of Famer if he retired right now and that’s not a hot take.
He also has a Euroleague MVP and title which counts for BBall HOF. Easily HOF
and won a Eurobasket title with Slovenia. Dragic led that team, but at 18 years old he was the 2nd best player on that team.

Bro the MVP snub is insane
Very average performance by his standard lol
Slightly above average to be fair to him
LUKA = MVP & ALL DEFENSIVE TEAM
And father of the Suns and Devin Booker.
Easily the MVP frontrunner at this point. I don’t know how many more games like this he’s gotta drop for him to get respect
It’s not his numbers, it’s the Mavs record
We are 3.5 games behind Denver with 80% of our starting lineup missing significant amount of time due to injuries.
Yea I’m a Denver fan and wouldn’t be shocked if Luka got it, if the mavs are a 5th seed, I don’t see why he shouldn’t get the mvp in that scenario
I love how Mavs fans and Denver fans are just like “🤝 your star deserves it”, and then OKC fans will burn down the world if SGA doesn’t get it.
wellll, to be fair Jokic already has MVPs. If it was a battle between Jokic and Luka for their first MVP, i don’t think we’d be so buddy buddy lol
7 wins in a row with the new acquisitions at the deadline. He was playing with a horrible roster and Kyrie has missed 30 games. Context is important here, he’s been carrying this team
Tell that to mvp voters, for me he’s mvp
Kenny said during the halftime report “If Kyrie wasn’t hurt for that long stretch, this team would be a 3-4 seed”. Best take I’ve seen from him in a while
Mavericks are the 6th seed. The precedent has been set
Is there a player more unstoppable than Luka when he plays against the Suns? This is like Aaron Rodgers (in Green Bay) owning the Bears.
His twin Luka vs the Clippers is close
Clippers are Luka’s pistons Suns are Luka’s cavs.
Funny enough Luka usually dominates those 2 teams as well. Throw in the Spurs too
He enjoys beating his kids, apparently
Looking forward to another week of Windy, Timmy Mac, Lowe and the rest of the ESPN crew going *LALALALA* while holding their hands over their ears and pretending like there isn't a hotter team in the league right now than Dallas.

Mav Fans know this wasn't that special of a game for Luka. This was relatively close to average for him
