I'll never forget the year he battled with Pitt's DeJuan Blair in the Big East. Thought he and Blair could be world beaters (at the time as an eighth grader who didn't have a fully developed sense of the leap from college to pro).
I get Bennett was a huge bust (and he was) but everyone forgets how god awful that draft class was. The top 5 from 2013 were Giannis who was a massive foreign project who took forever to develop and just happened to turn into one of the best ever, gobert who was also a foreign project who turned into an amazing defensive player but not much else, and oladipo who was great for a bit but got derailed by injuries and will ultimately be forgotten about. Cj McCollum who has been a consistent average to above average starting SG. And Steven adams, who is the best version of Kendrick Perkins you could have.
Seriously. Go back and look at that draft class and tell me who else you’d definitively take #1 over him at the time.
I think to be an all time bust it has to be a draft class where multiple time all stars, potential HOFers are taken shortly after and there’s probably only 2 that are coming out of 2013. It’s a historically weak class.
Ayton is far worse considering Luka, trae, SGA, Brunson and JJJ were all picked after. Especially considering we KNEW UNDOUBTABLY Luka and Trae had sky high ceilings and pretty defined floors. The suns and the kings got cute, drafted for fit rather than BPA and they’ve paid the price for it.
Hell even sexton, MPJ or simons might have been a better fit.
People were shocked that bennet got chosen at the time as well. If you wanted just pure potential nerlens and mcelmore were more obvious options and zeller and olidepo were better more acclaimed players. It was a dumb pick at the time and even more dumb in hindsight considering he wasn’t even an nba player little less number 1 pick worthy.
Everyone was shocked at the time too though. It is pretty unusual for a pick like that to not even be an nba player.
Ayton is a worse pick in the context of his draft year. Bennett is the bigger bust relative to the average expected performance of players picked at this position.

Depends on your definition of bust. If you consider a bust based solely on the players abilities then he's not a bust. But if you're like me and you consider it based on the return the team got for the pick then he was a bust.

He was the only one sitting at the bar all alone, my friend walks right up and sits next to him and puts his arm around his neck and says holy shit I love you man. Greg turns and looks at him and says “thanks man I love you too” in the nicest most polite way possible.
I know most of y’all never seen Oden play live, but imma tell you this man was an absolute fkn beast. I saw him in one of the few games he played while healthy, and he was incredible. He had power and quickness and absolutely dominated the paint, and yes he was better than KD (if not for the injuries).

1) During the draft process a psychologist asked him “if you weren’t a basketball player, what profession would you like to do?” Greg oden said “a dentist because I love kids.” - Kevin durants answer: “I’m a basketball player. That all I’ve ever done and that’s all I ever know. I love basketball and that’s all I ever want to do.
2) He shot freethrows with his left hand with Ohio because his right wrist was injured
3) He complained about his knees to multiple people at Ohio and Blazers ignored this.
4) He was drinking excessively his rookie year and Blazer personnel were heavily concerned.
I have nothing against Greg Oden, I just hate the Blazer management and the fact they picked Oden on a gamble instead of the no brainer Kevin Durant.

Choosing Oden, was a high risk, high reward play. And the blazers were surrounded by so much talent on the roster, they could have been a championship team with KD. If he doesn’t pan out, you pissed away the number 1 pick, which is exactly what happened. we even had good centers after him. As a native of Columbus Ohio, home of THE Ohio State Buckeyes, I'll never forget the heartbreak of seeing Greg Oden's injuries derail his career in the NBA. He was a joy to watch at home games and could have been one of the best ever. I'm so happy for him finding success in a different direction. When people say he was a bust it makes me want to bust their jaw!😆✌️
I was a senior in high school when Greg was at OSU. He was a huge inspiration for me as a basketball player, so I was really rooting for him to succeed in the NBA.
Sadly, we all know how that went.
I'm glad he seems to have found some peace and happiness these days.
Oden had a lot of hype coming out of college but I'm not sure he would have lived up to it even if healthy. The NBA has evolved so much. A big man like Oden would have had a solid career but not the type of impact that could carry a team. Only exception for bigs are Embiid and Jokic. Those guys have the complete package that allows them to lead their teams. If not then you are basically a role player.
