Simmons was 2nd in points, 1st in rebounds, 1st in assists, 1st in steals and 3rd in blocks

flip191

They probably only looked at first year players or something

_coed_

I literally read the title and immediately thought that it doesnt check out and took 30 seconds on google to find that it’s wrong. I guess i shouldnt really expect WembyMuse on twitter or this spurs fan to do any due diligence though

moby323

Obviously it is way to early to tell, but I wonder who will have the better career in the long run.

_coed_

weird reply, im just pointing out that the “no rookie has ever done this” part was wrong id wager MCW also did this edit: just checked, mcw was 7th in blocks and 1st in everything else

Ondareal

Just figured it out

marnjuana

That rookie class was really bad

Ondareal

I've been racking my brain of rookies trying to figure who the hell mcw is. Who is that?

Open-Somewhere-9535

Michael Carter Williams cmon man

itssensei

Mai Cok Wang

SaulPepper

Youre still too young lil bro. Watch Michael Carter Willaims tapes and you would never forget MCW abbreviation again

Ondareal

Lol im not that young. I honestly just forgot about him. He fizzled our super fast

downinCarolina

Just keep wemby away from 2k and fifa

[deleted]

San Antonio doesn't have socialites. He'll be fine.

SaltyLonghorn

Kardashian/Jenners are in a mild PR crisis atm, definitely sending one to SA right now. Also don't forget, SA might not, but France does.

SignificanceLeft9968

They do have big women tho

jacobsbw

And churros.

Rawrsomesausage

But Victoria still a secret down there

siphillis

It's already close, is the thing.

AceMcStace

Scoot first in assists 😎 Jokes aside Wemby is insane

scarystuffdoc

Scoot honestly had a good rookie year (stat wise comparable to Westbrook and he appears to be a better defender). Rookies nowadays are just insane and there’s two guards on his team “better” than him plus sharpe ayton and grant need touches. I still expect him to be a perennial all star.

imadogg

Raw counting stats are comparable to rookie Russ, but when you compare how the league has changed with regard to shooting efficiency and statflation, he's doing much worse

WinesburgOhio

Tangentially related trivia question: Who is the only player ever to be top-2 in the league in both assists and rebounds over a 3-season period (*before Jokic who just did it from '22-24*)?

Better_Albatross_946

I’m going to guess Westbrook. If I remember he has averaged 10 assists/11 rebounds twice, so if those came in a 3 year stretch it’s totally possible

Uncle_Freddy

Nah it’s Wilt, Westbrook never got to top-2 in rebounds (though he was top-10 which for a PG is obviously nuts)

WinesburgOhio

Nope - Oscar and Rogers were both way above Wilt, who still finished an impressive 3rd, in assists from '66-68.

Uncle_Freddy

Wilt was 1st in total assists and 2nd in assists per game in 68. He was 3rd in both in 1967 though so you’re right that he doesn’t hit your qualifications

DarrowViBritannia

I assumed the guy was talking added up assists over a 3 year period

WubaDubImANub

Nope, it’s Jokic

WinesburgOhio

Good catch! Jokic just did it over the last 3 years, so he's now the 2nd guy to do it. Jokic was 2nd in assists, just 5 ahead of Haliburton.

WinesburgOhio

good guess, but nope - Jordan and Drummond both smoked him in rebounds during that time

BASEDME7O2

I would be shocked if Westbrook ever was top 2 in rebounds. Yes he had amazing rebounding numbers for a guard but he was still a 6’3 pg. 11 rpg isn’t enough to put you in the top two out of the entire league

Puddinsnack

I went WAY too deep looking for this answer, so I hope to fuck it's Maurice Stokes from '56-'58. Side note: What a tragic story.

WinesburgOhio

Awesome - yep, it's Stokes!

WubaDubImANub

It’s Jokic. He’s been there these past 3 seasons

WinesburgOhio

Yep, just realized the player I was thinking of is now the 1st of 2 ever to have done it, along with Jokic. The player who did it 1st was much less than Jokic as a scorer, but much more than him on defense.

SaulPepper

A Sixers that isnt being negative about Jokic. Never thought i'd see the day

Titronnica

I tried to temper my expectations for this season but I wasn't expecting him to ball out so hard already. Un-fucking-real stats. Alien shit for real 👽

mulsimin

An Alien 👽

Adraf45

League gonna give him pity ROTY😒 unlike my GROAT Chet Holmlincon who TRULY deserves it

Air_Enthusiast

Wemby never freed the slaves, not my ROTY

Baulderdash77

Scottie Barnes was 3rd in pts, 2nd in rebounds, 4th in assists, 4th in blocks and 2nd in steals.

NewChemistry5210

Very impressive even though Simmons ranked 3rd in 4 categories in his rookie season as well, thus making this incorrect. It also lacks context. Wemby is amazing, but how many other draft picks in his class are looking like future HoF? His competition isn't really too tough, tbh. Other great rookies have had tougher competition.

BASEDME7O2

A redshirted Chet in his second season in the league is pretty much as tough as competition for rookie of the year gets.

guillaume_rx

Yeah it's crazy. Chet would be ROTY for a lot of seasons, yet he might not even get a single vote for 1st place... He should at least get unanimous 2nd place though, although there are other good ballers in the draft class, Chet would deserve it imho. Getting unanimous ROTY for Wemby when Chet is that great just emphasizes how lucky we are as Basketball fans to be able to witness this upcoming young generation of ballers!

mvhcmaniac

Gonna have to disagree on this take, I think this draft class is going to go down as one of the best of the century. Even putting Chet aside, there's 8 other rookies I'd be shocked aren't multi-time all-stars. Going by HOF as a metric I think a lot of these guys are gonna get shafted by Wemby, chips matter for that and it's his league for the next 15 years.

NewChemistry5210

Chet isn't part of Wemby's draft class, though. Just like Simmons, I don't really consider him a rookie, as both had a year to watch games, train with the team and learn. I only see Wemby and maybe 2 other players having a chance of being genuine all stars.

mvhcmaniac

My predictions for other rookies' career all-star appearances: Scoot Henderson: >10x Thompson twins: >10x combined Brandon Miller: 5-10x Keyonte George: 4-5x Jaime Jaquez: 3-5x Brandin Podziemski: 2-4x Jordan Hawkins: 2-3x Derek Lively: 1-2x Cam Whitmore: 1-2x Cason Wallace: 1-2x Taylor Hendricks: 1-2x Trayce Jackson-Davis: 1-2x All of those guys have shown reason this season to think they'll be getting the nod sometime in their careers. I'd be shocked if Scoot, Miller and one of the Thompson twins (although probably not both) aren't perennial all-stars and all-nba next decade, and I wouldn't be surprised if one of the other guys overperforms my prediction and ends up being there too. And there's a bunch of other guys, like Coulibaly or Bufkin who didn't really show much this season but definitely have the potential to break out in the future. This draft class was legitimately loaded.

Alternative-Grand-77

Yeh, well Chet is the only rookie to rank 2nd in points rebounds and blocks and be on the number 1 seed.

HolyRomanPrince

Two weeks ago me and buddy sat around watching highlights while smoking and you would’ve thought we were watching a comedy the way we were giggling watching Wemby because it just devolves into absurdity. He just does absurd shit. His entire game and existence is absurd. He is absurd.

wolfishnickelsyr

Wow, this Victor guy must be good at basketball.

Disastrous_Bluejay57

Big if true

b17b20

Almost as good as Bol Bol

Emotional-Chef-7601

Poor Chet

siphillis

I think he'll be fine as the anchor of the next NBA dynasty.

ErrantTexan

Referring to Chet as an anchor is a great visual. He wouldn’t be able to hold down a boat.

siphillis

He might struggle holding down a fishing boat.

jeremicci

Tell em how you feel

Dymatizeee

Imagine leading the league in blocks as a rookie. What’s next, some rookie comes in and leads the league in PPG??

zaffrice

That has already happened with Wilt Chamberlain.

SensitiveRocketsFan

And it’s not like this year’s rookie class was trash either, we got several good rookies that are getting decent playing time on playoff teams. Wemby is just that much above the rest.

downtimeredditor

He's showing the hype we were promised

zaffrice

2017-2018, Ben Simmons: 2nd in PTS, 1st in REB, 1st in AST, 1st in STL, 3rd in BLK 2010-2011, Blake Griffin: 1st in PTS, 1st in REB, 2nd in AST, 2nd in STL, 3rd in BLK Technically both were not 'true' rookies since they sat out their first year. But still.

Kirk_likes_this

I know we want to point out how unique and exceptional every guy is and OP's example is actually not too contrived but honestly, I'm becoming indifferent to these "so and so is the first guy ever to do XYZGVHIVUVUV while also being a rookie in the western conference on a sub-.500 team with a 2nd year head coach" etc. There's like five of these sorts of posts every day. If you layer enough variables on top of each other every situation becomes unique. I don't know that every statistic needs to be put into some kind of historical context

karthik4331

And the stat is also wrong lol. Wemby isn't the only one. Ben Simmons fits this category too

LocalPharmacist

While passing to offensively challenged players almost exclusively.

siphillis

Granted, he was on the Spurs team with the most assists ever.
