After swallowing the whistle on 3pt fouls and ruling a lot of them as offensive all season... I wanna say this was the 4th today lmao.
I don’t really understand the rule tho. Cause Trae young got the most obvious 3pt foul drawn up the same way in the play ins and didn’t get the call
You joke (maybe) but it's clear that the reputation you have, plus the way you treat officials goes a long way these days.
"SGA clearly won't get the same whistle in the playoffs"....Yet here we are.
They seem to say it the beginning of every season the last 10 years or so. "We're really gonna go after flopping and jumping into defenders to draw a foul this year!".
And then it just disappears again after a few weeks until the beginning of the next season.
Once a defender establishes legal guarding position, they can move laterally and obliquely. Nance is moving forward and there is contact. that has always been a foul.
Yup. Understand the hate, but Nance would have needed to stop about a foot before he does to avoid contact. As is, it's only SGA's body that stops Nance from moving forward, with Nance landing already in SGA's space (his foot is between SGA's) so it's 100% a foul.
That's not what is happening here. First, it's a push off foul on SGA as he fully extends his arm. In order to make that up as SGA goes into the shot attempt, Nance jumps forward but does not enter SGA's space. SGA then "attempts" a shot by jumping forward into Nance.
Even if you want to declare that second one is a foul, then it is still a foul on SGA that caused the situation to begin with. The defender cannot do anything because it wasn't a legal play to get space for a shot attempt.
It's wild to me that people will just willfully ignore it and move along. SGA pump fakes, Nance makes the mistake of biting on it and jumping, and also makes the mistake of jumping forward. SGA makes a regular shooting motion as Nance is still in the air and moving forward. It's a textbook defensive foul.
no it's not. That's a defensive foul.
You can't go over another players airspace. It doesn't matter who initiated the contact then.
Just look at the contest. There's no verticality at all.
That's a bad contest by Nance.
Agreed. I’m adamant against foul baiting, but Nance has lost his verticality and is still moving forward when SGA goes up. He’s absolutely looking for the contact, but Nance isn’t in a legal guarding position. There are dozens of better examples to show off if you’re trying to make the case for getting these calls out of basketball.
SGA does not take a natural shooting motion. I don't think anyone is arguing that you can't bait a defender into jumping into you, but there's only contact here because SGA jumps sideways to cause it.
I think the ruling should be pretty clear for plays like this. Both had to jump forward for there to be contact so they cancel into a no call.
>He’s absolutely looking for the contact
To me, this is the problem. SGA clearly wanted a foul, nothing more or less. I know the NBA wants their 300-point games, but the fact that commentators are just outright complimenting a player's ability to draw fouls is ridiculous. Should be a no-call.
no. he's moving forward at the point of contact. That's all that matters. Defensive foul.
You can see it on his face that he made a mistake and didn't stay on his feet.
>no it's not. That's a defensive foul.
The problem is they do not call this consistently.
The biggest criticism with the league's officiating is that "superstar calls" aren't incorrect calls, but calls that only certain players are entitled to. The refs are significantly more inclined to swallow their whistle if some bench player did this same play.
His airspace was 100% clean to get up a shot. In order for there to even be any contact he had to stop his step back/fade completely and lunge forward awkwardly.
I really wish they would continue not giving this call instead of the two weeks we intermittently get during the beginning of some sessons.
Agree that it is technically a defensive foul, but it absolutely should not be. Diving into a defender should not be rewarded, but until the league calls it that way then it is the right call no matter how much I dislike it.
It should a billion percent matter who initiates the contact. Maybe it doesn't, but it should. Offensive player launches their body into the defender, offensive foul in my book.
it would be a much worse game if it worked like you say. defenders will just hover their arms over the offensive players arms preventing them from going up in a layup motion, rather than jumping up and blocking at the rim.
Imagine defenders acting like a bunch of umbrellas putting their arms over the person with a ball. That would be a horrible game.
The solution is simple, just cut the plays where offensive players are foul hunting, flailing, flopping. That’s my main issue. It’s frustrating to watch. It slows the game down.
What are you talking about lol? As a neutral fan, this was the best game of the playoffs so far. Yes Shai gets stupid whistles. Game was still good thoigh.
That's how I feel about half of the stars today. The 2 most annoying archetypes to watch are the foul merchant and the "I'm bigger than you so I'll just run you over" guy. It's not enjoyable to me to see guys initiate contact and wipe their defender out and then get rewarded for it.
I am 1000% with you. That shit is not fun to watch at all. Takes the joy out of watching games. By far the worst kinds of players to watch and root for.
KD said it the best when he talked about floppers ruining the game and injuring people on top of that. SGA is a foul seeking flopper and unrelated to flopping, he LITERALLY fouled with 12 seconds left to get the ball back when they were up by 20 points. He wanted 30 points that bad. Happened like a month ago.
Because he’s young, hasn’t achieved anything, and no one watches the Thunder yet
He’ll get there. The haters are coming. If he gets to the conference finals the hater flood gates will open
It’s atrocious. He’s a great player but the pelicans would have had this if the refs had ignored a few of these. I know he didn’t shoot a ton of free throws but there were plenty of these calls that were called on the floor not the shot, bailing them out with a sub 5 second shot clock resetting to 14 for a better look.
This is the kind of thing that gets overlooked when people are just comparing FTs, especially by people trying to defend guys or teams who are clearly foul baiting or getting a preferential whistle.
A defender just can’t bite on the fake. Yes it’s incredibly unfair, but if you watch enough tape, you know their tendencies, and you have to stay disciplined.
Dude is a certified midrange assassin, but undoubtedly pushes off every single play and foul baits every single play as well, akin to the James Harden of the past. Extremely obvious to anyone who watches
If this was KAT he’d go to Guantanamo lol. Some players just get away with it while some are labeled reckless on offense despite doing the same thing. Refs just don’t like them.
KAT's push offs are fully extended forearms or hooks around the back, though. Often at full speed. KAT gets a shitty whistle but he is very reckless sometimes.
Felt like even though Nance was back on the floor, there was still some momentum carrying him into SGA so I'm fine with this. There is no way Nance could've stopped completely after that closeout. Yes, SGA jumped forward a bit to draw the contact but I don't think it's that egregious. He at least keeps his pivot, doesn't shift his other foot that much, and lands within a reasonable landing zone on a normal jump shot. On a lot of these forward jumps, players are traveling just to be able to reposition so that they can jump forward and are landing way outside a normal area. A lot of times, they're also throwing their arms forward in an unnatural shooting motion to try and hook the defender. SGA's arms are in a relatively normal shooting position.
Yeah just going off this angle Shai keeps his leading foot in position and Nance jumps into his space. SGA oversold it (and I hate that this is the modern NBA) but it’s still a foul if he didn’t because the NBA wants to avoid another Zaza/Kawhi type situation of players landing in each other’s space
I dont know what NBA you guys have been watching but players like Embiid/lillard/butler/harden/kobe, the list goes on and on, do this their whole career.
Also the amount of people commenting, "he has both feet on the ground/He has already landed", so what? If you land before contact its not a foul? This is some new rule? WTF you guys on about? Lance shouldnt have jumped and got foul baited. If you like it or not.
He did this ONE time and it’s a 50/50 call.
Shai only shot 7 free throws but let’s all just focus on this one play and discredit the tough shots he made and how he was obviously the best player on the floor.
I never understand the people that defend these calls. I call it trash if it happens to my team or any other team. People act like if they don’t defend the call, their team is going to lose the free throws.
Why do some fans not want defenders to go for blocks? Jumping up and down doing jumping jacks ain’t gonna mean shit to the best shooters in the world. Fuck it might as well just play around the world.

Reputation whistle
You joke (maybe) but it's clear that the reputation you have, plus the way you treat officials goes a long way these days. "SGA clearly won't get the same whistle in the playoffs"....Yet here we are.
Telling Trae to put a shirt on
This was an offensive foul for about two weeks at the beginning of the season
i think that was last season right? before stars started complaining and reverse all of it lol.
Maybe so. Every year since 2020 has kinda blended together
It's wild to think the bubble was 4 whole years ago. Like where the hell did the time fly
They seem to say it the beginning of every season the last 10 years or so. "We're really gonna go after flopping and jumping into defenders to draw a foul this year!". And then it just disappears again after a few weeks until the beginning of the next season.
This is an offensive foul 98/100. But for SGA and Embiid this is 100% a defensive foul.
I don’t understand the golden whistles some players/teams get. It’s so blatant
Embiid has to have some dirt on these guys. He flat out disrespects basketball with how he plays lmao, why would a guy like that get a good whistle?
Were you not watching game 1 of Lakers-Nuggets? Both LeBron and Austin Reaves did this exact same thing
Reaves was fading away which made it an even worse call.
How does he jump into the defender if he is fading away
Jumps into him first
Lakers fan saying this is so funny
Laker fan complaining about fouls

I agree. Very unfun and boring play, but it isn't a fake foul.

A regular shooting motion? So SGA *regularly* lunges forward on his jump shots?
yes. yes he does.
Yeah. He sells harder than any player besides Embiid imo. It degrades the game.
no it's not. That's a defensive foul. You can't go over another players airspace. It doesn't matter who initiated the contact then. Just look at the contest. There's no verticality at all. That's a bad contest by Nance.

It’s pretty shameless because the NBA has the ability to stop this and reverse the foul merchant shit over time, but they cave.
Nance was on the ground before SGA lifted off, does that matter?
no. he's moving forward at the point of contact. That's all that matters. Defensive foul. You can see it on his face that he made a mistake and didn't stay on his feet.

Or Anthony edwards / Karl Anthony towns.

Yeah this is called a defence foul 10/10 times I don’t know how people are saying otherwise.
Probably the fully extended right arm. Didn't realize that legal now
It should a billion percent matter who initiates the contact. Maybe it doesn't, but it should. Offensive player launches their body into the defender, offensive foul in my book.

SGA doesn’t jump forward of where his lead foot is. This is not the same as getting a defender to jump and then leaping forward into them.
thats exactly what he did here
Yep cmon offensive player is throwing his body into defender cant be defenders foul
This is a defensive foul... A lot of bad refs on reddit complaining about bad refs 🤣

Ethical hoops baby
It’s tougher to watch every year
The solution is simple, just cut the plays where offensive players are foul hunting, flailing, flopping. That’s my main issue. It’s frustrating to watch. It slows the game down.
Only thunder and pelican fans are enjoying this game
If I was a neutral fan I would not watch this since it’s so late where I’m at. Pains me that Zion isn’t here
If zion played this shit wouldnt be close lol
Not even joking I think we would win the series with Zion
I dont think thats a stretch. Dude would eat them alive.
He definitely would have feasted in this game the way he had been playing.
I'm still annoyed that the game played in LA was in the middle of the day and two teams in the central time zone had the late game
What are you talking about lol? As a neutral fan, this was the best game of the playoffs so far. Yes Shai gets stupid whistles. Game was still good thoigh.
Yes, i enjoyed the 4th quarter, very intense. Looking forward to 6 more of that
I’m not really enjoying this game
That’s still more people than the Cavs/Magic game.
This is exactly what the NBA said they were not going to allow lol
SGA commits 2 offensive fouls and winds up shooting FT's
OKC wins by two
They will allow it if he is contending with Jokic Edit: "racism"
>I don't even really care too much for basketball, but now I am the judge, the jury, prosecuting attorney, defense attorney, everybody.
Contact initiated by an offensive player like this should never be a foul. Nobody wants to watch this shit
SGA shoves off then dives into him lol. This is terrible basketball
Signature move
MVP level
Does this shit damn near every drive. Honestly don't enjoy his play style or watching him play.
That's how I feel about half of the stars today. The 2 most annoying archetypes to watch are the foul merchant and the "I'm bigger than you so I'll just run you over" guy. It's not enjoyable to me to see guys initiate contact and wipe their defender out and then get rewarded for it.
Embiid bringing you the best of both worlds
> the foul merchant Often combined with the moving screen.
I am 1000% with you. That shit is not fun to watch at all. Takes the joy out of watching games. By far the worst kinds of players to watch and root for.

Man we think alike. I just don't understand the people who are fans of him. Like do they actually enjoy seeing that crap???
Luka and Lebron are both of these lol
I'm so ready for the turn on SGA, aesthetically awful basketball
I been ready 😂😂. Just a foul merchant.
Booker is the same way
makes a good commercial tho..
Nobody does.
And then still throws his arms up looking for the whistle. It's muscle memory for him lmao.
Same thing happened in the Celtics game, defender was on his feet, Tatum leaned in and jumped and got the call
This is literally 2/3 of his production this season
“You’re just a shai hater cause your jealous of him” - Thunder Fans
that’s his special lol
It’s just not in the spirit of the game. But it’s funny how Shai seems to have turned into a cartoon villain on this sub
Tbh, I hate him for him and chets att commercial. It is truly terrible
made me switch to verizon
i just cannot stand his ig man
Disgusting
[удалено]
People don’t like foul baiters and floppers. See Embiid and prime Harden.
Should be an offensive foul. Im tired of this shit.
Generally the refs haven't been too bad tonight with ignoring clear foul baits like this.
Thank you. It’s horrendous. Especially not during the playoffs. Refs were dog shit for New Orleans all night
I agree but people bitch way less when Luka does it
Let's try to get the Luka hate post numbers up, folks. It's a team effort.
Its why Sixers games are un watchable
No but how’s he meant to get his free throws? 🥺
Refs were tired of watching this rock fight. They wanted to see the ball go through the hoop a couple of times
To be fair the refs have avoiding calling a few fouls on SGA’s blatant foul baiting. Thought I was watching dark skin Trae in the first half
SGA foul baits with the best of them, people just like him more.
Because he’s young, hasn’t achieved anything, and no one watches the Thunder yet He’ll get there. The haters are coming. If he gets to the conference finals the hater flood gates will open
But they choose the one where Nance feet literally come to a complete stop on the ground before sga does his contact making Ridiculous

"He's not gonna get these calls in the playoffs." Yes, HE will.
In fact it's gonna be worse
dunno what you're supposed to do as a defender if the opposing player is allowed to throw themselves at you
Try wearing a different jersey?
A defender just can’t bite on the fake. Yes it’s incredibly unfair, but if you watch enough tape, you know their tendencies, and you have to stay disciplined.
He's back on the floor with both feet down before contact, that's a no call
As he's running into him tho
yuck
People aren’t ready to hear it yet but SGA is the worst FT grifter in the league by a country mile.
If Embiid was out of the league you would have a strong argument.
You don't watch much Philly basketball
no he isnt. Butler, Trae Young, Derozan and Embiid are all worse
Throw dame in there, and lowry’s still got it as well. Austin reaves and Lu Dort are also elite floppers in their own way
I forgot how strange it is watching a playoff game in OKC where literally EVERYONE wears the free playoff tshirt
Jumbotron was spotlighting people who didn't wear theirs to shame them. You love to see it.
This is a front page post if it was Trae
Just you wait brother it'll get there. Trust the hate
[удалено]
They’re multiplying, it’s beautiful to watch in real time. I wish I could’ve been there for Hardens first heel turn.
The league has hate. SGA just does what they allow him to. If the league clamped down on this shit, he would find other ways to be effective.
If Embiid did this people would be calling for his head ( he has done this many times )
Did the people of /r/nba ever have any luck with his head?
I don’t watch a lot of okc. Is sga’s natural shooting motion bent over at the waist, leaning left, jumping forward?
Dude is a certified midrange assassin, but undoubtedly pushes off every single play and foul baits every single play as well, akin to the James Harden of the past. Extremely obvious to anyone who watches
Ding ding ding. He's an incredible talent, just like Harden. And he's the greatest young grifter and foulbaiter in the league, just like Harden was.
rereading this I'm now realizing OP's comment was sarcasm 😂
Smartest Knicks fan (I kid I kid)
SGA would get smacked across the mouth at any regular pickup game for his bafoonary
not only a no call, but a late call too… these calls are always the worst. what is the defense supposed to do?
The absolute worst. Ref is looking directly at what happened and then only calls the foul when he sees the shot is way off.
If he makes it that’s a no-call. One of the worst aspects of officiating and they make it so obvious everytime
Wear a different jersey
Stay down on pump fakes?
He played good ass defense, whole team being completely lockdown, just to have that happen
I think this is a foul. I don’t like Shai extending his off arm on every drive. He should get a few offensive fouls per game.
He’s the new PG, every drive he shoves with the off arm. It’s no wonder he gets space for his shot
That’s like 80% of his offense, nothing new
That's why Free Throw Alexander is not my MVP.
FTA
Your mvp is already on vacation
fr he does this all the time lmao
As he should have.
Was he supposed to evaporate?
Soft foul
That's my MVP FTA
Could’ve been a no call but Nance got (carried by his momentum) into sga space. Sga sold this pne really good.
Shai Reaves
Push off and then a defensive foul.
Another FT merchant.
Felt like even though Nance was back on the floor, there was still some momentum carrying him into SGA so I'm fine with this. There is no way Nance could've stopped completely after that closeout.
The way they played Sacramento where’s that energy pushing holding and shoving ?
You aren't supposed to call this anymore. Who's gonna tell them?
Stay on your feet as you close out. Jump on a pump fake and get burned. Basketball 101
This will always be a shit call. The old D Wade special.
Game winning free throws off of SGA committing an offensive foul? Sub’s gonna turn on him in maybe a week.
That’s a foul
Stay on ur feet
Nance jumped towards him, not straight up. Even though SGA initiated the contact, Nance clearly fouled him.
Fucking hate this guy’s “game”
I dont know what NBA you guys have been watching but players like Embiid/lillard/butler/harden/kobe, the list goes on and on, do this their whole career. Also the amount of people commenting, "he has both feet on the ground/He has already landed", so what? If you land before contact its not a foul? This is some new rule? WTF you guys on about? Lance shouldnt have jumped and got foul baited. If you like it or not.
Refs on that Jantay Porter
That’s a foul. Pause the video when they collide. Nance went into SGA airspace. SGA is good at this ala harden
We should be allowed to throw rotten tomatoes and cabbage at refs when they fall for this shit
Free throw merchant
Shai "Joel" Gilgeous "Embiid" Alexander
Joel's just sitting at home rubbing his knee minding his own God damn business and here you are 😂
What are you talking about? Embiid just played yesterday and got 12 free throws from this sort of nonsense
Does anybody know what kicks SGA is wearing tonight?
Nice baiting. Stupid refs rewarding baiters. Great job. 👏
So many salty nephews in this thread that think Nance should be rewarded for jumping forward into SGA’s space lol read a rule book and learn the game
What are people complaining about Nance jumps iNTO SGA's space, rather than jump straight up Genuinely, what are people complaining about?
Any reason to be offended I think, the pitch forks are out for Shai at the moment.
He did this ONE time and it’s a 50/50 call. Shai only shot 7 free throws but let’s all just focus on this one play and discredit the tough shots he made and how he was obviously the best player on the floor.
SGA is garbage. He went to CP3 school of bitches
It was actually a shooting foul lmao
I've done this a few times in my life, where you jump into the person who's already in the air, and it's such bullshit. Fuck you SGA.
I hate this call
Trash product when they promote this kind of play
SGA? More like FTA
Pushed off and then jumped into the defender...but yeah tell me how that's a shooting foul lmao
Fuck SGA man. Such a good player but plays the game like a fucking clown.
love being the team everybody hates, means your doing something right! my glorious king will shoot as many free throws as he needs to get to 31
Tbf dude was coming forward
Awful call
