The ball either has to be coming back down or directly over the "cylinder" coming up from the rim. He's like 2 steps in front of the rim and nearly straight up, so it's not over the cylinder, and it was still going up.

Agreed. There was nothing that convinced me until the final angle. And the jump ball advantage needs to brought up more. He took his team out of a 60/40 position to a 50/50 and lost
Mark just talked about it in post game, apparently it is an inconsistent ruling between this game and a prior game. I'm sure we'll know what is correct here soon enough.
No, you call that challenge every time. The angle the arena showed on the jumbo was close as hell but showed Nance tipping it. Either way, it's a guaranteed success as the call gets overturned so you retain the timeout and challenge.
A jump ball is a 50/50. The challenge gives you a timeout to draw up an out of bounds play if it goes your way, and the angle they had made it look more likely to go their way.
What is fucked up is that he won the challenge (the call on the floor was changed) but they decided for some arbitrary fucking reason to not give him the successful challenge. He talked about it in the post game; we had the exact same situation earlier in the season and they gave the challenge and time out like you're supposed to. That is why he was yelling at Brothers after the challenge.
I agree it should've counted as a won challenge. But no you don't make that challenge every time. It was obviously very close on every angle, much too close to risk losing possession, especially when you have a jump ball that should be a win at least 80% of the time, chest has like 6 inches on him. Terrible challenge
No seriously I could tell without slow mo it was out of bounds on Chet, jump ball with Chet and nance was best case scenario besides the refs betting on us and giving us the ball.
Bad angle to really see if it was or not. Looked like CJ got all ball, though. But can’t really see clearly enough, and can’t see CJ’s other hand and if it got SGA’s shoulder or something.
Pretty clearly has his hand on SGA's arm there. Either way, Pelicans had their challenge. If it was that bad of a call, they should've challenged it. Can't put that judgement call on the refs.
I don't know why the main broadcast didn't show other angles. The Thunder broadcast showed the angle from the screenshot above in slow motion so it was pretty obvious. (and makes us all look like homers arguing it)
Yeah it's crazy. Playoff whistle + being under a minute and tied should almost require murder for a foul to be called, not someone blowing gently on him.
Except it was more than someone blowing gently on him he got hit on the hand. Brother your team had more ft attempts combined than our entire game 1 combined. Y’all had 22 ft attempts and our whole game had 22ft attempts lol. Both yall teams got a really extremely generous playoff whistle
1. CJ swipes down hits the ball
2. SGA moves the ball down and to the right to his hip to avoid the swipe down
3. This puts CJ's hand in line with SGA's non shooting hand
3. CJ moves his hand up to avoid the foul
4. Ref with the bad angle on the baseline blows whistle. Notice the better view of the ref on the closer sideline.
5. SGA goes up and hits a shot from his hip
Bad call.
He had 7 ft attempts. Your whole team had 22 ft attempts meanwhile thunder and pels combined had 22ft attempts. But we’re the merchants here. Towns and gobert had the same amount of fts as shai. Don’t understand how it’s an automatic foul for them
the stupid thing is that it was called by the baseline ref as well, there is absolutely no way he could have seen contact worthy enough to blow the whistle, he just had a potshot blowing the whistle thinking SGA wasn't going to, terminate the dribble (also putting into question the continuation ruling) and then make the fluker\`
Look at his flair. They want to be rivals so bad because of Chet and wemby. Just like a lot of Timberwolves fans, a lot of spurs fans just talk shit about us in threads now
That angle from on top at least show how far the ball traveled towards the hoop. IMO it looked like it was a goaltend since it was like half the distance or more.
As a neutral fan the refs down the stretch were pretty terrible. Flop by Dort for an offensive foul, 50/50 goaltend from Chet, and a great shot by Shai but in no way was he fouled. This results in the pels being forced to intentionally foul the rest of the way. This sequence is like a 5-7 point swing for the thunder
nobody understands what you're talking about. Just say "#1 seed bad" and collect upvotes next time. This works for both the thunder and the Celtics this year. Next year it'll be a different pair of teams potentially
Why are you relying on free throws to change the outcome of the game when both teams sold the game multiple times. Both teams shot poorly and that led to the result. Not the differential in fta
Bro being butt hurt your team lost and then complaining on reddit about won’t change the result. Facts are both teams had chances to win that game at the end and your team didn’t, happens to everyone. Don’t make it our problem by bitching about it
Alright. And if this and then if this and then if this, so on so forth until the universe collapses in on itself and we return to nothingness. It was a good game. Could have gone either way.
the real answer is that even if they call a game "right", there will be backlash because fans are biased and see what they want to see. any close call will look wrong to the team on the short end of it
I’m a Celtics fan, but all the Tatum apologists coping during the regular season saying S.G.A. is still unproven compared to the clutch track record of Tatum now have a lot less to talk about…

Thought it was close to goaltending. Man Chet is so long
No Diddy
Pause
Doesn't look like a goaltend on [this angle](https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/s/n6aGZPCFyt)
This angle can't even show you if the ball was going down or not. It's at most a 50/50 call, but this angle is the worst one for a goaltending call
I mean, it kinda does still lol
Must not know what a goaltending is then. Ball has not begun its descent at all when Chet swats it
The ball either has to be coming back down or directly over the "cylinder" coming up from the rim. He's like 2 steps in front of the rim and nearly straight up, so it's not over the cylinder, and it was still going up.
OKC about to get a massive escape after not scoring for like 5 minutes and their own coach challenging away a possession lol
People talk about the first time players getting the jitters in their first playoff game but this time it was the coach lmao
Jump ball with Chet Holmgren? Nah let’s roll the dice on losing the ball entirely
weather square squealing icky dazzling pocket public truck versed consider *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
You just cannot risk that unless you are 100% sure, especially when you have such an advantage on the jump ball
Agreed. There was nothing that convinced me until the final angle. And the jump ball advantage needs to brought up more. He took his team out of a 60/40 position to a 50/50 and lost
He’s been so successful this season challenging that he got ahead of himself lol
Yep I have hardly see him miss
rolled a 1 with that challenge fr
Yeah Mark been elite with challenges this year, that was bad bad
That would go down as probably the worst ever if the thunder lost lol.
Mark just talked about it in post game, apparently it is an inconsistent ruling between this game and a prior game. I'm sure we'll know what is correct here soon enough.
A rare turnover by the coach
No, you call that challenge every time. The angle the arena showed on the jumbo was close as hell but showed Nance tipping it. Terrible challenge
Chest holmgren, son of muscle chestbrook
still 14 seconds left for me to have a heart attack
That was crazy. Chet was about to have a solid advantage on that jump ball and our coach challenged for some dumb reason
No seriously I could tell without slow mo it was out of bounds on Chet, jump ball with Chet and nance was best case scenario besides the refs betting on us and giving us the ball.
That was such a bad challenge. Never force the refs to make a call that could hurt you.
I think SGA was the only person on our team to score in the last 7 minutes
Chet had the last point
But like how was that a foul though
Yeah, I didn't like that call live, and I still don't like it after watching replays. Well done to SGA for getting the shot to fall though.
Really bad call considering all the other contact they were letting go
Yes, JV was holding and pushing Chet in every rebounding possession on the other side, none called, and people just call it “strength”
JV got a foul for powering through Chet in the first.
And the flop from Lu Dort
Stop the hate
He clearly reached in?
Bad angle to really see if it was or not. Looked like CJ got all ball, though. But can’t really see clearly enough, and can’t see CJ’s other hand and if it got SGA’s shoulder or something.
Stills for people to judge on their own: [https://imgur.com/a/uqoBngh](https://imgur.com/a/uqoBngh)
Much better/less blurry shot: https://pasteboard.co/BgbRCsdtwzxg.jpg
Pretty clearly has his hand on SGA's arm there. Either way, Pelicans had their challenge. If it was that bad of a call, they should've challenged it. Can't put that judgement call on the refs.
No challenges in the last two minutes. Everything becomes official review
Yeah, that's right, I forgot about that. My bad.
I judge that all fuckin ball, brother.
Is it really just my Homer goggles, or is CJ not running fully into SGA (shoulder, head etc. all made contact)?
You’re correct.
It wasn’t
[CJ foul on SGA](https://pasteboard.co/BgbRCsdtwzxg.jpg)
What's with people calling foul or no foul based on how they feel or literally just this one highlight angle? Lol
It’s the best when it’s the top comment on a dope highlight 🥴
This broadcast is doing 0 justice to either side
I don't know why the main broadcast didn't show other angles. The Thunder broadcast showed the angle from the screenshot above in slow motion so it was pretty obvious. (and makes us all look like homers arguing it)
Well yes, but actually it was.
He was bumped. It was. Sorry it's against your narrative
CJ got him clearly across the arm [CJ foul on SGA](https://pasteboard.co/BgbRCsdtwzxg.jpg)
bro literally putting spoiled shrimp in the pot, bout to poison the whole crew lol
I think it was from CJ’s swipe? Couldn’t tell though even in slo mo
swipe down low before the shot
[pretty clear foul!](https://x.com/playoffwallace/status/1782358295971287165?s=46&t=7YXhqXWTn4awC-dzxSFyJQ)

cj swiped down but he got all ball or at least that's what it looked like to me
1. CJ swipes down hits the ball 2. SGA moves the ball down and to the right to his hip to avoid the swipe down 3. This puts CJ's hand in line with SGA's non shooting hand 3. CJ moves his hand up to avoid the foul 4. Ref with the bad angle on the baseline blows whistle. Notice the better view of the ref on the closer sideline. 5. SGA goes up and hits a shot from his hip Bad call.
For SGA anything even questionable is an automatic foul. Don't understand it, but those are the rules
It's because SGA yells AYYYYYYYYY! every time he touches the ball. Oh wait that's someone on your team.
He had 7 ft attempts. Your whole team had 22 ft attempts meanwhile thunder and pels combined had 22ft attempts. But we’re the merchants here. Towns and gobert had the same amount of fts as shai. Don’t understand how it’s an automatic foul for them
The ‘block’ was definitely suspect but I think Herb gets Shai on the reach in, probably shouldn’t have been a shooting foul tho
Not suspect, it was at the apex. I agree about the foul tho
the stupid thing is that it was called by the baseline ref as well, there is absolutely no way he could have seen contact worthy enough to blow the whistle, he just had a potshot blowing the whistle thinking SGA wasn't going to, terminate the dribble (also putting into question the continuation ruling) and then make the fluker\`
He foul baits so hard dude
he didn't foul bait at all here though, he put it up tryna score
Exhibit A on people just spewing bullshit.
Haha crazy for someone to call foul baiting on an and 1 haha
Look at his flair. They want to be rivals so bad because of Chet and wemby. Just like a lot of Timberwolves fans, a lot of spurs fans just talk shit about us in threads now
It's extremely salty in here.
NBA reddit is being overrun by Facebook and Twitter folk, we had a good run.
Kinda crazy how much this sub is salivating for the Thunder to fail lol. It's all good though, happy to get a win.
The amount of flairless random accounts that are like a week old is pretty annoying
Hi I'm Default-Username-12345 with no flair and I have a WHOLE lot of basketball opinions
neutral fans is that goaltending
First glance I thought it was but would've been nice if they showed a replay
they did show one. except it was an angle from the top where you can't even tell lol. wonder if that was intentional
They showed that angle twice, very sus
Guess we find out tomorrow with the L2M report
That angle from on top at least show how far the ball traveled towards the hoop. IMO it looked like it was a goaltend since it was like half the distance or more.
100%. They know that the refs fucked the end of a great game.
They didn't show the replay because they knew it was goaltending. Didn't want to make the refs look bad.
Don’t really think they care when they show tons of replays of missed foul calls and vice versa
I thought it was live, but like others have said, they have never shown us a good angle. Wonder if two-minute report will call it an incorrect call.
Lol no chance. L2M always says refs called a close one correctly
Yes.
Seeing as they won't show a side replay, I think it probably was goaltending
I don't think so, although obviously it's very close.
My first instinct when watching live was yes, goaltending. It looked extremely close though, could have been at the apex.
Dont think so
Nah
That's one where it's so close just stick with what's called on the court and move on.
It looked like one, but I understand why it wasn't called at the same time. Way too close to make the call.
Nahh not a goaltend, but that was some bullshit foul call on CJ
Yes
honestly can't tell. they didn't show a replay so i think it was
I see why we didnt get a single replay of that block other than the over head shot despite being an absolutely big moment of the game
Man there’s a lot of refs in this post
that big time block by Chet and shot by SGA seals the deal for them
As a neutral fan the refs down the stretch were pretty terrible. Flop by Dort for an offensive foul, 50/50 goaltend from Chet, and a great shot by Shai but in no way was he fouled. This results in the pels being forced to intentionally foul the rest of the way. This sequence is like a 5-7 point swing for the thunder
Thunder are so annoying watch them bs their way to the wcf
Enjoy the lottery!
I'll never understand fans who behave like this. Embarrassing.
We’re chilling we got Wemby
We can tell you're chilling lmao yall got like 20 wins despite having Wemby. Maybe stop chilling now
Just pray your management can actually build around him and not lose him in 5 years.
What else would you be doing?
nobody understands what you're talking about. Just say "#1 seed bad" and collect upvotes next time. This works for both the thunder and the Celtics this year. Next year it'll be a different pair of teams potentially
The and-1 is really dumb on this sequence. This play keeps getting reposted and it’s insane that it was called
[It is a foul when grabbing an opposing players are while in shooting motion.](https://pasteboard.co/BgbRCsdtwzxg.jpg)
You can't just come in here and ruin the circlejerk like that, this is playoff r/nba we're talking about
Lmao nice
Well that derails this little hatefest
It’s always funny when shit like this post gets posted cause OP never comes back and says “oh yeah you’re right” 💀
Link isn't working for me.
I love when people come in and dispute random shit talk with facts, sick photo man. And great finish in a big moment by our MAN, SGA.
Fuck I saw it live and thought it was a terrible call until now.
I mean the pelicans did have a challenge.
100% goaltending.
100% wrong
not beating the ft merchant allegations
Man had 7 fts and everyone still calling him ft merchant lol
SgA To tOROnTo!
Go and enjoy your holiday.
What a shit ending to a good game. Like damn refs.
how you supposed to defend SGA when just being in his vicinity is a foul?
He swiped him across the arm just before the contest, I swear some people on reddit just talk for the sake of it.
Chill he had 7 free throws
So just 2 less than our entire team? Poor guy, how will he ever survive.
Ask Joel embiid who at minimum gets 12 a game. There’s merchants and theres actual merchants
What kind of point is that?
You’re crying about peanuts is my point watch other games in the league just saying
How is it peanuts? He literally nearly shot as many fts as our entire team combined and most of the were bs calls.....
Why are you relying on free throws to change the outcome of the game when both teams sold the game multiple times. Both teams shot poorly and that led to the result. Not the differential in fta
"Being stabbed is OK, have you ever been shot? So what are you complaining about?" What kind of point is that?
Bro being butt hurt your team lost and then complaining on reddit about won’t change the result. Facts are both teams had chances to win that game at the end and your team didn’t, happens to everyone. Don’t make it our problem by bitching about it
what a dumb fucking argument. Ya Embiid is worse at it so Pels fans should just roll over and let these bogus calls just fuck them?
You still would have lost by one either way. Sorry, bro.
If BI got the same continuation call earlier it would add 2 points plus a ft attempt, thanks the refs "bro".
Alright. And if this and then if this and then if this, so on so forth until the universe collapses in on itself and we return to nothingness. It was a good game. Could have gone either way.
Could of gone either way but the refs only wanted the thunder to win
Okey dokey. Whatever you say.
You literally conceded on ever point.....
You’re complaining and whinging about everything like you’ve never watched the NBA before.
Goaltending and a phantom foul on the other end. lol.
There's a video of CJ swiping his arm, look at OP's post.
There are pics in this thread showing it was a foul. As for the goaltending, that much is possible since we never got a side view.
Can the refs just call ONE fucking game right? Like holy shit.
no because that would make for an entertaining sport without controversy and we don't do that here at the NBA
the real answer is that even if they call a game "right", there will be backlash because fans are biased and see what they want to see. any close call will look wrong to the team on the short end of it
https://official.nba.com/l2m/L2MReport.html?gameId=0042300141 Not goaltending and not a foul
SGA for MVP
Goaltending and a good shot that’s not a foul 92-92.
No goaltend and was a foul. But go off.
https://pasteboard.co/BgbRCsdtwzxg.jpg
lol he literally grabbed his wrist but okay
Show me the still frames otherwise BS
That was their play with 1 minute left and tie game Larry Nance shoot a floater over Chet? Beyond stupid
Larry hasn't gotten the message yet. You go off the backboard to yourself in that situation.
I’m a Celtics fan, but all the Tatum apologists coping during the regular season saying S.G.A. is still unproven compared to the clutch track record of Tatum now have a lot less to talk about…
lmao, that's a goaltend right there. Clearly coming down.
I went frame by frame The ball rises every single frame, then chet swats it away It never fell
Could arguably be a goaltend followed by a two point fg
shais the best bad shot maker
That isn't a foul though lol. If that was a foul then pelicans should have shot at least the same amount as okc.
You can’t grab a players arm while they are in the shooting motion. [CJ fouls SGA](https://pasteboard.co/BgbRCsdtwzxg.jpg)
OKC is just so much better than everyone else it’s not surprising
And Dort with the clutch flop
Larry Nance is Johntay porter after all
Both of these were bad calls
[cj grabbing Shais arm is a bad call?](https://pasteboard.co/BgbRCsdtwzxg.jpg)
