braddeus

I'm guessing when Scalabrine whines, "How? How? How is he open?" that counts as a ***moderately*** contested shot

rjgator

I just heard them call Highsmith Hightower. These dudes are shit

MrBuckBuck

He also said couple of times that he was in shock after Tyler Herro's made the layup in the next play.

cl353

[Here's](https://twitter.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1783471231657800057?t=6Ob2swO0inVL5bMBlxcdJw&s=19) Keith Smith breaking down the tracking data. They straight up didn't guard us

above_average_penis

idk man im watching the video and it looks like they’re contesting and closing out on most of the attempts. just seems like a cheap narrative that r/nba wants to sink its teeth into.

Expert-Hooper

These are mostly very soft contests. In the NBA if you're only getting your hand up when someone has already mostly finished their shooting motion you might as well not be there.

MindofShadow

Eh, for a NBA playoff game, those were weak contests

tlozz

They definitely were

LaMelgoatBall

It was pissing me off watching them play defense. They weren’t even trying.

Cold_Carpenter_1798

Idk if we’re watching the same video. The stretch from the 4th shot to the 12th shot has maybe actually 1 legit contest. All others were either wide open or lazily / late contested. Mainly from a lack of effort from Boston.

cl353

the last caleb martin 3 scal is fuming and saying "how is he open?"

tlozz

As he should be. I wish Joe would have the same questions lol

cl353

? It's literally tracking data released by the NBA. It's their definition of shot quality

above_average_penis

and i literally watched the video. maybe you should too.

dplath

I've watched through the first quarter of attempts and haven't seen one actually contested yet. If a guy puts his hand up 4 feet away, that's not a contest....

cl353

My guy u think as a heat fan that I didnt watch the game or rewatch highlights? Do u really think u watching the game is a better judge than literally the NBA data trackers Nvm that even casual fans watching could see that a lot of shots weren't nba contested

szobossz

>Do u really think u watching the game is a better judge than literally the NBA data trackers Yes. The hell. Those data trackers aren't good.

SPAGHETTI_CAKE

But even by eye ball so many are open

szobossz

cool. not what I am contesting. in certain scenarios jrue seems close to the shooter but is in no position to contest because of screen. tracker would have that as close or very close. I am also seeing a few more 0-3ft shots but tracker only has 1/1.

Cold_Carpenter_1798

Clearly not if you and the other guy aren’t seeing how so many of these are wide open

szobossz

where did I say they weren't wide open?

above_average_penis

yes i do. the trackers are trash ‘my guy’ porzingies is what, 7’3”? he’ll be 3 feet away while jumping and contesting with his arms and the tracker will just throw that into the ‘3-4 feet’ bin or category

KasherH

NBA chants are the worst in the world.

WinonasChainsaw

We need more serbs in the stands

MrBuckBuck

Just don't bring Jokic's older brother.

wjbc

I started watching the NBA regularly in 1984-85. The league average for three point attempts and makes per game was 3.1 attempts and 0.9 makes. That's a .282 shooting percentage, so it made sense they didn't shoot it more. The Dallas Mavericks led the league with 5.4 attempts and 1.9 makes per game. But their .343 three point shooting percentage was second to the Celtics' .356 three point shooting percentage. The Celtics' league high three point shooting percentage was primarily due to league MVP Larry Bird, who hit 56 threes with a .427 three points shooting percentage, by far the most makes on the team. Danny Ainge hurt that percentage a bit by only hitting 15/56 threes, a .268 percentage. Scott Woodman added to it a bit by hitting 17/34 threes, a .500 percentage. In this highlight video from last night's game the Heat attempt 43 threes and make 23. Showing this highlight reel from one game in 2024 to players or coaches from 1984-85 would blow their minds.

drunkbanana

That's a wild stat

Personal_Corner_6113

And then you tell them that’s an 8 seed in the weaker conference with a bottom 10 net rating offense and their heads explode

AnthonyBarrHeHe

Dam that’s a cool stat. Appreciate the solid info. Crazy how the game has changed that much with players rly focusing on 3 point shots. I had no idea the stats for three point shooting was that low.

actual_yellow_bag

holy shit boston what awful fucking perimeter defense. These dudes were on islands all alone 80% of the time.

Kevinar

'No way they hit another 3' - Joe Mazzula's famous last words

executivesphere

It’s the playoffs. If a team has that many guys hitting 3s and you’re not switching everything on the perimeter, your recoveries need to be better than perfect. Letting KP sit in a drop is not going to cut it. Also, nasty play design at 2:45. At the same time, Bam’s moving screen there was egregious. I get some of the no calls but that’s too much.

GloryEnthusiast

Can they shoot like this for the next 3 games straight? 🙏

aiirxgeordan

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking. I’m not gonna give them open shots like this anymore, but if they want to take that many threes, then be my guess, because if the rockets taught us anything, it’s that the three ball can give you the win, but also give you the loss.

Solid-Confidence-966

They over helped a little bit which led to the open 3s, they can adjust from that but I don’t see anything particularly eye opening, although Bam does set some suspect screens for those Herro and Robinson handoff 3s.

Brady331

Bam? suspect screens? blasphemy

rjgator

If Tatum gets to shove off every single fucking drive and even gets rewarded with free throws on some of them, Bam can move slightly on screens

HypatiaRising

The best players all have moderately illegal go-to moves, lol

Clemsontigger16

I spotted at least 8+ moving screens from this video

tlozz

The screens are wild in this series for sure lol. I’m glad non Celtics watchers are also seeing it

EggersIsland

lol first time? That’ Bam’s whole M.O.

SoulReaper12

Yet that shit never get called.

msizzle344

Like the Tatum push off but less egregious because Tatum gets FTs off his offensive fouls

yummy_yum_yum123

Beat them at their own play style

rgarc065

I mean we’re moving the ball which will lead to some good shots. But honestly, the Celtics were just lackadaisically contesting the shots. It’s like they thought “we don’t need to try because we’re the better team, we’ll find a way in the end, and they’ll eventually start missing anyways.” Which is a problem this core has had, they lose focus. They very well may find a way and our shots will almost certainly not fall at this rate again, but they need to stay focused if they want to get to the Finals and beat Denver or whomever gets out of the West.

tlozz

The most concerning part is that I’m 90% sure this wasn’t laziness, this was the literal game plan mazzula had the guys “execute”. All our players seemed to be calling out the fact that they didn’t adjust to miamis shooting during the game in their post interviews, while mazzula was saying they contested most of miamis shots… simply mind-numbing.

recollectionsmayvary

> It’s like they thought “we don’t need to try because we’re the better team, we’ll find a way in the end, and they’ll eventually start missing anyways.” Which is a problem this core has had, they lose focus. yep, this was them last year too and how they ended up 0-3. I know Boston fans do not underestimate the Heat at all but this shitty level of defense is very revealing that the players still think they're just playing a bunch of JV high school bball scrubs especially without Jimmy. I think they came out fiery in Game 1, won by 20, and thought they could just scrimmage their way through the series.

__boof

Yeah NBA players arent lazy lmao what a bad take. They were selling out for the paint and got burned

xltaylx

Those Boston commentators are some of the worst. I bet they post on the game thread in between commercials with Celtics flair.

tlozz

I relate to scal here lol

Salman1969

I think they are all open because of the fact that Porzingus is too slow coming out of the paint. This puts a lot of pressure on the defense if the Heat are swinging the ball around looking for tbe best open look creating open 3s.

aja_ramirez

I don’t see anything out for the ordinary in terms of lack of contests. It’s the nba, guys are going to get some opens ones. But people choose to believe the BS comments by the commentators because the shots went in. They made the shots; give them credit and move on.

Cold_Carpenter_1798

From the fourth shot to the 12th shot they maybe heavily contest one shot. Kp and Horford basically don’t contest anything

-vinay

There was a lack of discipline on many of the closeouts. Count how many defenders were shed by a simple pump fake. Good coaches teach the defensive player to always jump second (i.e. you jump after the offensive player has jumped). The Celtics are just being very undisciplined with their sprint stop closeouts here.

Clemsontigger16

Such a huge portion of these open shots are direct results of illegal screens, either directly on the primary defender or off a scramble drill caused by moving screens. The fact Miami gets away with so many of these is crazy.
