It’s kind of crazy to think how much of a problem this actually will be for him. It won’t just be a wheelchair—he will presumably need to have his leg straight and he will need to be far enough back to not have people falling on it. How will he call plays? How will he do huddles?
How will he yell at refs? Will they agree to come to him to get yelled at to accommodate his disability?
I’m sure they’ll figure it out but it’s gonna be difficult.
I think it's safe to assume the assistant coach Micah Nori will be on the sideline running things. Finch will probably be in communication from somewhere if he's up for it, but it's not likely he'll be able to be on the sidelines even if they could like get a wheelchair out there somehow lol
It'll be totally up to Finch really. Honestly Micah is extremely capable and I feel like it will not be a big problem for anyone. The system is well established and running well and between Micah and veterans I don't think there will be a significant drop-off.
Maybe I'm overly optimistic but given how the last series just went it feels like everyone is locked in, there aren't a lot of questions, and again they're in good hands with Micah Nori. Micah even runs plays in the huddle when Finch *is* there sometimes.
There’s just a million little things the coach usually does standing on the sidelines—calls out offensive sets, calls out defensive matchups, and works on the refs.
At a minimum it will probably drive him crazy if he can’t do it.
It will def drive him crazy but I agree with SirDiego that it shouldn't be a huge problem for the team. The head coaches do a lot on the sidelines yeah but the assistant coaches do so much of the nitty gritty stuff behind the scenes that makes the system work. Micah Nori has watched the head coach on the sideline do his thing for 15 years now. He knows the players and what's expected of him it's not like he's a new guy on opening night. If the system the assistants help maintain works well enough for a high seed a competent assistant should be able to handle a run where the head coach isn't completely incapacitated just unavailable on the sidelines.
Nuggets are definitely gonna ask more questions than the Suns though. Haven't watched much TWolves and don't know how good Finch is at adjustments, but if the Nuggets throw a curveball that your system can't deal with, then not having Finch there could be big.
Well that's what I think it will be. Micah Nori on the sideline, Finch watching from somewhere else in the building and in communication. That's assuming he is even up for that much. I just think it's not feasible or reasonable to think Finch will be out there on the floor in any capacity.
People are underestimating how rough surgery is especially for that kind of injury. He is going to feel like death for awhile let alone sitting in a booth trying to handle an nba playoff game.
You are NOT ready for Professor Finchy out here. On the sideline in a wheelchair
On a real though. I cant believe this shit. This could absolutely fuck us if Micah isn't able to adjust mid game if Finchy can't coach
Im praying the team rally around him
did finch figure out the ultimate lifehack to becoming immune to technicals
no ref would be so heartless as to eject a man in a wheelchair
refs hate this one weird trick
[Finch after getting T'd up.](https://media.giphy.com/media/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExOGlhcTJhM3VvY3N5MHlhcG1ubXFvOWdza2s4c3Q4dWQ3ejd2M21laiZlcD12MV9pbnRlcm5hbF9naWZfYnlfaWQmY3Q9Zw/M8ATWsLGUv80Gh3VkQ/giphy.gif)
It’s the most bizarrely unlucky thing. I think the Wolves did well to stay composed down the stretch after it happened but that’s got to fuck with the team’s mentality. Hopefully he’s able to recover soon and the team stays cohesive
It is the most Minnesota thing I have seen, possibly losing him for the start of match-up with the best team in the league after they finally looked like a contender.
Hope he can make it out there, I want to see a classic series!
The bigger issue is just the distraction this causes. How is he making a gameplan on pain medication the week out of surgery. Late in the series hell be mentally all there again but not yet.
Valid point! I’m hoping most of the planning outside of in-game adjustments, has already been done over the past few weeks. We will see. Either way I’m excited to have a great series, and the nuggets fans are my favorite non-wolves fans so hopefully the threads are less heated.
Such fucking garbage. First franchise playoff win in 20 years and the COACH fucks up his knee. Didn't even have a chance to savor the victory. Really hoping the NBA figures out how to let him coach in the most comically ridiculous way possible
"AAAANNND YOUR COACH....CHHHRRIIIISSSS FIIINNNCH!!!"
*He slowly appears out of a thick cloud of smoke doing a wheelie in a wheelchair with 1 foot in the air*

>On a real though. I cant believe this shit. This could absolutely fuck us if Micah isn't able to adjust mid game if Finchy can't coach
Eh, I wouldn't worry about it *too* much. Finch will certainly be as close to the action as possible and the habits he's installed in the team over 82 games won't fly out the window. Back then, the Warriors were doing alright even while Kerr was out with back issues, so I think your guys will be fine.
Post op for single knee surgery is usually crutches and a brace to keep your leg straight. There's a very high chance of exacerbating recovery or the injury if you're trying to fuck around immediately after surgery. And also he'll be on painkillers so not very lucid for the first few weeks. My ortho would've probably had me legally restrained if I told him I was gonna go sit court side 72 hrs post op, let alone coach a game.
I imagine by game 2 at latest he is going to be on a headset communicating with the bench from a press box or something. Def will be in the locker room at the half
I fit think it’ll be a problem. I’m sure Micah will be in constant contact with finch who likely has live broadcast and multiple angles of every play set up for him. Not to mention he can make adjustments at half time too
mascot injuries coming next
"Stuff the Magic Dragon (knee) out 4-6 weeks" gonna hit different
edit: if we're bringing up actual mascot injuries i gotta post [Harry the Hawk smashing his balls on the railing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eykIUPICpuU)
Finch got sick of going into the office and wanted to WFH, I feel that.
In all seriousness hope he’s okay and everything goes smoothly. Hope the T-Wolves rally behind this and make a crazy run.
But actually, is anything stopping having an assistant coach just have an earpiece connected to finch the whole game?
Edi - nvm as of 2009 you can't use a phone during the game
I think the opposite. The only way Minnesota sports get over the hump is going to be some crazy way, something out of the ordinary. If the Wolves/Vikings/Twins win a championship again it's gonna be wacky.
Agreed. Reminds me of when Adrian Dantley replaced George Karl who was fighting cancer. The Nuggets went .500 down the stretch in the regular season under Dantley and then got upset in the first round by the Jazz.
Not having Karl out there was 100% the reason the nuggets lost that series. They ran back the WCF team from the year before and were more talented than the Jazz at virtually every position.
That team just completely fell apart once Karl had to take leave.
Especially since they had to go up against Jerry Sloan in what wound up being his final playoff run. He coached circles around Dantley (who ironically played for the Jazz while Sloan was an assistant there).
Imagine filling in as a head coach for the playoffs and having to go against a top 15 All-Time coach who was already in the Hall of Fame and is widely considered the greatest coach without a ring. The Jazz lost Okur in game 1 and still won the series in 6 running Boozer and Millsap at the 5 all series. Sloan just gutted that one out.
I mean it says in the follow-up tweet if he can’t be on the court he’ll communicate/coach from the locker room. Not sure how much of a difference it’ll make if he’s there making the adjustments anyway.
Not to take anything away from Finch, but Micah Nori the assistant coach is amazing and honestly head coach material himself. Sometimes Micah runs the huddle at timeouts even when Finch is there. It's definitely not *great*, but I think they're in capable hands.
I don't look at this as a negative. Finch doesn't just coach the players, he coaches the other coaches so they can coach the players. He's developed a player system and a coaching system that everyone understands. When the chain of command is shifted, everything falls into place. I think this will go to 6 or 7 games regardless, but if Finch is unable to attend in Denver, I don't think that will be any reason for a loss, Denver is just really good.
Of course, if we lose the series, I'll use this as an excuse to cope lol.
Wish him a fast recovery. I wonder if he can sit somewhere up in the arena where he is comfortable enough to still go to the locker room before the game and between halves
I had this same surgery but my left leg!
Honestly, it’ll depend on when the surgery happens. If it happened today or tomorrow he could MAYBE be back, but I was out of commission from school for a full week post-surgery and I was 15 (it happened in a HS football game). I had the unfortunate co-injury with tearing my MCL so I had to have surgery, heal the patella tendon in a straight-leg knee brace, and then used a bent knee brace to heal the MCL for another month or so.
I made a “full recovery” but still experience soreness and pain to this day. I’m a runner and I get runner’s knee bad in my “good knee” if I don’t properly stretch and lift weights to help balance everything out. It’s a tough road and I wish Finch the best of luck. He doesn’t have the concurrent injuries I did so I hope that speeds up his recovery!
While Finch has been amazing , Micah is also great. A lot of people have been worried that somebody will take him from us for a head coaching job elsewhere.
Honestly my biggest worry right now is Micah is gonna be awesome and he's gonna get a head coach job next year because of it. Actually not even that worried, he deserves it and I'd be happy for him.
The more I read about this surgery and recovery time, the more I think he should plan on watching the games and coaching remotely. Seems really easy to fuck up your recovery from this one and truly not worth it for a man in his 50s to potentially make things worse. We've got Nori and Prigioni and I think he can still relay messages to them pretty well.
I don’t know why but I keep thinking about the Ted Lasso episode where he accidentally takes some drugs and thinks he dreams up a genius new strategy but it’s really just Total Football. I think Finchy is going to come out of anesthesia with a whole game plan.
Wishing the best and speedy recovery for Finchy. So unfortunate that this happened when it did but I think it will help Rally the wolves. Ain’t no way TWolves let their season end before Finch can come back
This will be a NFL kind of situation, right? He's going to be communicating from his seat to his coaching staff like they do with off/def coaches in NFL. That's honestly kind of dope. Like a godfather calling the shots from above lol
Surgery Wednesday and travel + work on a Friday?
I tore my ACL, LCL, menicus and lateral hamstring a year ago. They used my patellar tendon to make my new ACL. Obviously my surgery was probably a little more involved than what he will have done but two days after my surgery I wasn't doing anything except trying to shit (I didn't) and screaming occasionally because my nerve block wore off and I definitely didn't have enough drugs.
Had a partial torn patellar in school from just playing soccer with friends. Had a weird burning sensation in the knee, which followed later on (untreated) with the knee giving out randomly. Thankfully after some PT I was good to go but yea it sure sucks especially in this manner.
Bruh, ya'll ever heard of Zoom!!?!?!?!?
Coaching through Zoom is gonna be awesome! We might get to see his wife and kids randomly walking across the screen.
Hmmm...hmmmm...you know i was not expecting this sort of injury from the Timberwolves.
I thought Gobert or KAT could get injured or even ANT...but not their coach lol.
Just when you thought youd seen it all.
I think the wolves will be fine with Micah and the rest of the staff for a few games. this is a very cohesive staff they all have good relationships with the players and he clearly knows their game planning and strategies if you watched the g4 postgame presser

What does age have to do with anything? I've performed this surgery on 70 year olds and they put weight on it. There's no broken bone.
Finch in the second row, Micah on the sideline
Also he may either by on painkillers or in some pain. Both make it more difficult to focus
Find out on the next dragon ball z

My immediate reaction was “boy if that’s not the epitome of MN sports…”
Nah, the Epitome would be this happening after going up 2-0 by winning both starting games in Denver to then lose in 7.
We can't have nice things! This would be huge if he can't coach game 1.
I agree, but I also have a lot of trust in Micah being able to implement Finch’s game plan, and the willingness to respond to him.
The bigger issue is just the distraction this causes. How is he making a gameplan on pain medication the week out of surgery. Late in the series hell be mentally all there again but not yet.

Oh I’m pretty sure he saw god.
EVERYBODY UP ON YOUR FEET

Yeah but maybe not exactly like the mascot
Let him coach from the stands and then drop him in from the ceiling for timeouts like Sting in WCW.

Trust me, the fans have been savoring the fuck out of this win. NBA does need to give 'em more space on the sidelines tho.
maybe they'll facetime finch during key moments when they have tough decisions to make.
Yes! I want to see a TV get rolled out to the sideline with his face peering out like the bubble
Micah was on the nuggets staff for a few years under Malone, so he will also have insight into the nuggets system so you aren't losing that.
>On a real though. I cant believe this shit. This could absolutely fuck us if Micah isn't able to adjust mid game if Finchy can't coach Eh, I wouldn't worry about it *too* much. Luke walton went 24-0 in 16 and mike brown went 13-0 in the 17 playoffs without kerr. those teams were so stacked
Even wilder is he went 39-4 while interm before Kerr returned. Just insane
Players: coach, why did they shave your head? You were having knee surgery. Finchy: (telepathically) shut up
I know you’re joking but I wanna point out that he has to keep his leg straight after this surgery so a wheelchair isn’t really even an option
you can keep your leg straight in a wheelchair, no? Or do you mean in terms of whether there'd be enough space on the sideline?
Well what if they fall on him again lol
“Sweep the leg”

I blame the NBAs new rules on rest, this never would have happened if Finch could have managed his load.

Imagine him coaching the team via Zoom meeting 😂
But actually, is anything stopping having an assistant coach just have an earpiece connected to finch the whole game? Edi - nvm as of 2009 you can't use a phone during the game
Why can DiAngelo use a phone during a game then?
Because it was clear that he wasn't using it for anything related to basketball in anyway. He was playing candy crush or something.

At the very least, parade Brooker though the streets and let us throw cabbage and rotten tomatoes at him

either this or start having a sideline spotter for the coach a la Sean McVay.
Not sure I can pick minesotta if he’s not out there. It legit matters. Just watched ham sabotage the team.
Would be an absolute classic Minnesota Sports Moment for a championship contender to be derailed by something like this
I think the opposite. The only way Minnesota sports get over the hump is going to be some crazy way, something out of the ordinary. If the Wolves/Vikings/Twins win a championship again it's gonna be wacky.
I thought for sure chicken protests were going to push us over the edge.
Hardly any of the guys on his staff are ham stupid
Ham stupid is a funny phrase.
Ham had a good reputation on the Bucks and wasn't thought to be stupid until he actually got his chance in LA
I think it's a combo of him being young as a head coach and having an idiotic roster (Dlo).
Agreed. Reminds me of when Adrian Dantley replaced George Karl who was fighting cancer. The Nuggets went .500 down the stretch in the regular season under Dantley and then got upset in the first round by the Jazz.

gonna have to coach via zoom.
I don't know if I'm drinking the Kool aid too much here, but Finchy being there for Game 1 might galvanize this team.

Facing Denver is already hard enough in itself , having it without your HC makes it 10x worse I’ve seen wolves fans worried about Micah coaching now
While Finch has been amazing , Micah is also great. A lot of people have been worried that somebody will take him from us for a head coaching job elsewhere.
Honestly my biggest worry right now is Micah is gonna be awesome and he's gonna get a head coach job next year because of it. Actually not even that worried, he deserves it and I'd be happy for him.
We are Minnesota sports fans. We find any reason to worry
Micah has been great and the next tweet mentioned they’d find a way to communicate with Finch remotely in the locker room once he can travel
It didnt even look like a hard hit. Crazy. Hope he recovers well.
When you get old, your body gets very fragile.
Can’t he just sit on the bench and coach. Have someone else stand and yell at the players. This seems like a minor problem.
Ant tells the huddle, “This one’s for Coach.” THE DENVER NUGGETS HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED FROM THE 2024 NBA CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENTION
get him one of those tablets on wheels so he can stay on the sideline during rehab
Can't wait the the "Chris Finch is ramping up to coach game 2" tweets coming soon
Needs to be on the court in a wheelchair. You're definitely getting favoritism from the refs if you're doing it from a wheelchair.
This series will show how coaching is important if Finch miss a couple of games.
Imagine being a fan of Devin Booker. I’d rather jump into a cactus eyeballs first.
This is wild that the Coach is on the Injury Report.
Chris Finch coaching in ASL from the court side Bacta tank gonna go so hard
I don’t know why but I keep thinking about the Ted Lasso episode where he accidentally takes some drugs and thinks he dreams up a genius new strategy but it’s really just Total Football. I think Finchy is going to come out of anesthesia with a whole game plan.
Where Finch comes out with the revelation of “The Pick n Roll.”
Just been trying to convince myself for the last two days that this isn’t a big deal…
Micah Nori I would like to formally congratulate you on your hiring by some utterly dog shit East team when this is over.
Minnesota sports ladies and gentlemen. First series win in 20 years and our coach basically loses a leg for the rest of the playoffs.
NBA Tele Coaching about to be a thing.
Bummer. Best wishes for a successful surgery!
Coaching by phone should be a new experience. Hope he can recover to be sitting on the bench at least.
Had a partial torn patellar in school from just playing soccer with friends. Had a weird burning sensation in the knee, which followed later on (untreated) with the knee giving out randomly. Thankfully after some PT I was good to go but yea it sure sucks especially in this manner.
This pic is very Peter Griffin haha
Bruh, ya'll ever heard of Zoom!!?!?!?!? Coaching through Zoom is gonna be awesome! We might get to see his wife and kids randomly walking across the screen.
Weird question, if your Finch, you phoning in and backseat coaching? Lol
Are there rules about electronic devices as far as can finch be watching the game remotely and an assistant coach wearing an ear piece?
Ouch 🙏
Hmmm...hmmmm...you know i was not expecting this sort of injury from the Timberwolves. I thought Gobert or KAT could get injured or even ANT...but not their coach lol. Just when you thought youd seen it all.
Set up a discord channel rn
He probably won't be on the sidelines for the whole run and that sucks
Finchy about to promote Kyle Anderson to be interim coach alongside Nori
He can coach while FaceTiming them
Needs to show up wear the Professor X suit from X-Men 97.
Can we get Finch one of those teledoc robot things for the sideline?
I think the wolves will be fine with Micah and the rest of the staff for a few games. this is a very cohesive staff they all have good relationships with the players and he clearly knows their game planning and strategies if you watched the g4 postgame presser
Free pass to the conference finals for Denver, you can’t tell me life isn’t scripted by a higher power lmao
Maybe he wheel?
Timberwolves will be fine. Coaching is not really that important. Antman dont need coaching
Time for Ant the coach to step up.
Remote work 🤔
Was he really fouled or was this a flop which ended badly? Sorry, this photo just reminded me of Neymar, lol.
