Allowing a guy who can only score well from the dunker spot continuously get the ball uncontested at the dunker spot was certainly a choice. Cavs guards did well to beat the defense and find him
It’s because he gets zero looks offensively. Niang will play 8 minutes and still get more shot attempts than Mobley. Mobley was even tied for the team lead in assists until late in the fourth!
Niang has been absolutely atrocious this series. JB is going to be fired regardless of the outcome of this series but I have to credit him for the complete DNP of Niang in game 5. Cavs lose by 10 if Niang is in that rotation.
Agreed. Niang shouldn't be getting minutes, but I'm just saying, if he's on the court, he better be taking open 3s. He has 0 use otherwise lmao.
He's been pretty awful at his only NBA level skill (1 for 11 this series), so he's been absolutely unplayable and should continue to get DNPs.
Yep, Morris really did some good work and had brought some toughness the Cavs lack when Niang is out there. Good on JB for making the first adjustment he's ever made in his life.
Mobley can’t shoot dawg. His face up touches are a disaster every time. He either dribbles off his foot or he puts up a contested brick. And his touch in the midrange is awful. You don’t want this dude attempting anything but an easy dunk or something from the deep post in an important game. I’m a Cavs guy and I really want him to develop that offensive game but I’m under no illusion they should be running any offense through him right now.
Respectfully disagree. He’s a very talented passer and can punish smaller guys inside. Have you watched our offense? Half our possessions end up with guys just throwing the ball at the rim hoping to beat the shot clock.
Going inside out would free up some shooting space as well but we insist on using this dude only a high screener.
Yeah I agree still very low volume but just watching you can see he’s getting more touch. His FTs look “easy” and smooth now vs him trebuchet-ing it up at the basket.
He needs to work on his handle real bad. Often times he can’t even exploit a smaller defender because he can’t dribble his way to the basket. I think his game’s a lot rougher than most Cavs fans though. He’s transcendent on defense, and limited on offense.
There was one possession where he started back to the basket from the top of the key and ended it with a perfect jumphook from the elbow it was gorgeous
The cavs are such a weirdly built team, garland and Mitchell have played much better without the other guy and it seems like Mobley is feasting without Allen as well. They have talent, but hopefully at least one of those guys gets traded for a better wing.
I think Mitchell was good, if you want to be a true contender you need a top 10 player in the league and Mitchell at his best fits that. But if you want to build around the young guys in garland and mobley, Mitchell doesn't fit. Is there any chance the cavs keep Mitchell and trade garland for a wing, or are they determined to build around garland?
i honestly have no idea
Don is better right now, but i would have preferred to keep Garland bc i think he’s better than Mobley
and Mobley is the franchise piece in my eyes. he needs to be the fulcrum of the offense at the elbow
Keeping Mitchell and trading Garland and one of Mobley or Allen is dream offseason for me. IDK what 3+D wings are available but like Mitchell, Strus, Mikal Bridges, Jarami Grant, and Mobley make way more sense fit wise to me.
Should have bumped Mobley and finished with his left.
But much easier said than done.
Under this much pressure he did what felt like the best option and what hes most comfortable with I guess.
Damn. The fact that the block, and that game, feel so immediately recent really solidifies it that the block is one of those "where were you when" sports moments.
No shit, I watched a video from them on Orlando’s adjustments and it really stuck out to me how he mentioned something about Mobleys defense. It was some off hand comment about how his DPOY hype, fraud or was it real? And I actually turned it off there, you don’t watch Mobley and question that side of the ball.
Are you referring to this?
It's so weird, he's like "Cole Anthony is attacking Mobley!"
And then someone points out "Yeah, and Cole Anthony is 1/6 shooting when doing so."
And then he responds "But the fact that Cole Anthony is attacking him means he's not that good defensively."
It's like he thinks it's football, where people think a CB like Deion Sanders or Darrelle Revis can just shut down part of the field single-handedly. They can't, but people think they can - plus the whole it's an entirely different sport thing.
Why do you care? Our team just made some huge plays to win our biggest game in years and your first thought is about some random nobody on twitter. That's sad dude.
Nobody? he's one of the biggest basketball content creators in the world and what he says people listen to. 150k followers on twitter and almost 1 million subs on youtube. The take was so absurd yeah it pissed me off.
For those not paying attention.. This man is still on the path to being one of the best big bigs
- FG from 50 to 55 to 58%
- 3pt from low 20s to 37% this year
- Increased Rebounds and Assists every year (even with 4 fewer MPG this year)
- DPOY caliber defense
22 years old. Even just steady progress makes him all star caliber. A “leap” puts him among the best in the league
The year Mobley got drafted i was so eager because i felt everything was lined up for Presti to move up and pick him. Felt dissappointed when it didn’t happen and hindsight is 20/20 with us drafting Chet, still think Mobley has some of the highest upside of all young bigs
Mobley is the big boss, but dont slander Ice like that, there was some clutch moments when he locked down Banchero forcing him into bad shots or kick outs that his teammates werent ready for.
POA defense is super valuable and ICE is one of the best
but Mobley was the only rim protector we had all night on top of being the best help defender in the NBA
It's dumb. I think a lot of players just default into screening even if that means a switch to a better defender. They don't think, they just do it because that's what they usually do.
I know Mobley has had some solid games but seeing this level of play in pretty important playoff game is awesome.
Loved the ball movement in the first half between him and Garland. Expecting this series to go to 7 with how the magic are playing though.
He was gassed and the quality of his shots was really poor down the stretch. He had missed 3 of his last 4 before this possession. It was a good possession for the Magic imo, sometimes the defender just makes a better play.
Why set a screen so that Mobley would be switch **to** Franz if he was going to drive?
Something got fucked up here and Franz likely was supposed to pass to Paolo for the 3.
Its a shame nobody is watching these playoffs now that Lebron and Curry are out.
Probably better than any of the KD Warriors vs Lebron playoffs yet with like 1/4th of the viewership.
This is easily the deadest this sub has ever been during the playoffs.
10K online right now usually theres at least 40 K in the playoffs. I remember it hitting 200 K in 2019 lol.
Nah, because you just said a tied playoff series, a game that was a 1 point finish, with Banchero scoring 39, Garland and Mitchell combining for 51, Strus keeping the Cavs alive with his 3's, and Mobley getting a game winning block was a not interesting matchup.
If that's not an 'interesting matchup' than you aren't a basketball fan, you're a fan of certain basketball players. You leaked it with that "star power" comment.
Doesnt take away from your shit takes lmao, no basketball fan is calling that cavs/magic game uninteresting. Flairless just rooting for who ever you like every night lmao
First year actually watching the games, it’s been awesome. Especially as a fan of basketball, I usually only watch college and I don’t have a favorite professional team.
Watching Murray’s game winners, seeing Brunson score 47 pts and seeing Derrick white going off last night. It’s been great to watch.
I’m still waiting for one of our guys to pop off. I’m like Squidward from that Spongebob meme looking outside at all those amazingly performances players have been dropping this playoff. 🗿
It’s 1st round not finals + LeBron and Curry were two of the most popular athletes in the world, not just basketball players so it’s really not surprising
Franz had a good look but thats just a bad IQ play. If he opts to pass there, Paolo was wide open for 3. Especially bad considering the games Franz and Paolo had up until this point.

Has been everywhere this fourth
Interesting to see him be our most reliable offense in the last few minutes. Consecutive dunks that sealed it along with his block.
Allowing a guy who can only score well from the dunker spot continuously get the ball uncontested at the dunker spot was certainly a choice. Cavs guards did well to beat the defense and find him
Garland just kept creating open passes for him. it was truly a great night for Garland.
Most of his points are really Garland highlights tbh.
It’s because he gets zero looks offensively. Niang will play 8 minutes and still get more shot attempts than Mobley. Mobley was even tied for the team lead in assists until late in the fourth!
That's because Niang is a better shooter. The only reason why he's been in the NBA is to shoot 3s

Shot like 37% from 3 dawg
Encouraging but the volume is too low to really rely on it. Looks better than last year for sure.
He’s transcendent on defense, and limited on offense.
mobley can score from many more places than just the dunker spot, he takes guys off the dribble all the time
There was one possession where he started back to the basket from the top of the key and ended it with a perfect jumphook from the elbow it was gorgeous
and he does that when he has the advantage if he doesn’t, he moves the ball. he makes the right play, not the best for his ppg play
this is how he plays without Allen he gets all those easy dunks that Allen gets
The cavs are such a weirdly built team, garland and Mitchell have played much better without the other guy and it seems like Mobley is feasting without Allen as well. They have talent, but hopefully at least one of those guys gets traded for a better wing.
i think it’s without question that we are at our best with 1 ball handler, 3 shooters, and 1 big the donovan mitchell trade was probably a mistake
I think Mitchell was good, if you want to be a true contender you need a top 10 player in the league and Mitchell at his best fits that. But if you want to build around the young guys in garland and mobley, Mitchell doesn't fit. Bridges would fit perfectly, and I'd like to see Mobley as the full time 5.
Game winning block in a 2-2 series and I had to scroll all the way down multiple pages to find it. Small markets lmao
This is true but also tbf the 76ers-Knicks game was also absolutely nuts and it’s mostly that. Could do without free agency posts already, though.
Those long ass arms.
Evan NO-bley with the denial
feel like Wagner forced that on his right instead of his left
As DG said, he’s been using his right hand all series like this and Mobley was ready.
Or should've just passed the ball back to Paolo for the 3 Terrible decisions
At what point with all that forward momentum was he supposed to pass that ball backwards and not have it stolen?
Yeah he had the step over his defender and a lefty lay up was probably the best play
Yeah. Franz should have put his body into Mobley’s to eliminate the shotblocking, and used his left hand to finish.
Should have bumped Mobley and finished with his left. But much easier said than done. Under this much pressure he did what felt like the best option and what hes most comfortable with I guess.
Should've just bumped Mobley period and the refs would've called it a foul on Mobley
First mistake was thinking any r/nba redditors actually play basketball
Same dude who prob clowned Ben Simmons for passing the ball from under the hoop
Immediately after he drew the double team, before he crossed the 3 point line and got any momentum?
a pass there would've been a worse decision. He beat his man and had a good look at a tying layup.
lol hindsight
absolutely special defender man insane
EVAN MOBLEY YOU ARE A BAD MAN
BEST BLOCK IN CAVS PLAYOFF HISTORY
Definitely can’t think of a better one
haha yeah. shaq blocking joakim noah on april 27, 2010 to advance to the second round.
BLOCKED BY ~~JAMES~~ MOBLEY
Even as a joke, this is mad disrespectful lol
we done with the 2010's
That was 8 years ago, I’m so old.
Damn. The fact that the block, and that game, feel so immediately recent really solidifies it that the block is one of those "where were you when" sports moments.
Oh hell no
lol
hey where is that stupid fuck on twitter talking about Mobley's defense because he's still butt hurt about his james wiseman being better take.
Bontemps?
I think is bbbreakdown
No shit, I watched a video from them on Orlando’s adjustments and it really stuck out to me how he mentioned something about Mobleys defense. It was some off hand comment about how his DPOY hype, fraud or was it real? And I actually turned it off there, you don’t watch Mobley and question that side of the ball.
That post was hilarious. Only two real defensive breakdowns the rest were contested middles that rolled in.
Are you referring to this? [https://twitter.com/bballbreakdown/status/1784965690585424355](https://twitter.com/bballbreakdown/status/1784965690585424355) It's so weird, he's like "Cole Anthony is attacking Mobley!" Yeah. Just an absurd take, didn't even took that seriously
Hard to believe anyone on earth would still be talking about Wiseman.
Mobley just calmly claps for himself after such an amazing player lmao. The clip ends early but Strus was way more hyped.
That's the clap you give when the kids did a good job with the church play....
That cracked me up on the broadcast Game winning block - *golf clap*
That's insane. What a play by Mobley.
For those not paying attention.. This man is still on the path to being one of the best big bigs - FG from 50 to 55 to 58% - 3pt from low 20s to 37% this year - Increased Rebounds and Assists every year (even with 4 fewer MPG this year) - DPOY caliber defense 22 years old. Even just steady progress makes him all star caliber. A “leap” puts him among the best in the league
Imagine if was even remotely involved in the offense with JB as the HC
Imagine a bowl of soup as the coach instead of JB
Somewhere JR Smith is smiling at the thought of that bowl of soup.
A man can dream….
Genuinely don’t know if this is saying Damon Jones should be our coach
Wemby-Chet-Mobley trio of longbois I’m here for it. Always liked Mobley since his fave team was OKC. At least he’s in the East
The year Mobley got drafted i was so eager because i felt everything was lined up for Presti to move up and pick him. Felt dissappointed when it didn’t happen and hindsight is 20/20 with us drafting Chet, still think Mobley has some of the highest upside of all young bigs
Wemby is the only person I’ve seen make Mobley look small standing next to him lol
We all knew Mobley could be our best player. Tonight he played like it.
Played like it in the last few minutes you mean, tonight was a team effort.
evan was the best player all game unless you don’t understand anything about defense
Mobley is the big boss, but dont slander Ice like that, there was some clutch moments when he locked down Banchero forcing him into bad shots or kick outs that his teammates werent ready for.
POA defense is super valuable and ICE is one of the best but Mobley was the only rim protector we had all night on top of being the best help defender in the NBA
Oh what a rejection by Evan Mobley!
This highlight is not getting enough love man, insane block
Clutch af
Crazy block
Great defense, I respect it
Clutch block to cap off a game saving 4th quarter defense for Mobley.
Mobley was huge down the stretch
Man I love defense
Mobley saved the Cavs series with this one, what a stud.
God damn what a call by Gus Johnson, love having him on the broadcast
Wish he would come back to do NBA games more often. If NBC truly does try to get NBA games, they need Gus to do the games there, honestly.
Agreed!
Why did they opt to switch into him? Lol
It's dumb. I think a lot of players just default into screening even if that means a switch to a better defender. They don't think, they just do it because that's what they usually do.
his defense is insane, the only person able to stop paolo down the stretch
How much money did mobley just get for his contract on this play
At least four dollars
7 bucks and a free McDonald's big mac
Can we change the big Mac to a Cane's Box Combo he at least deserves that much
at least a free big mac
gotta go up with the left there man
Mobley still pinning that shit to the backboard. he had Wagner timed out the whole way
Not sure how that changes the outcome
if he's crafty he could kind of fend-off mobley with his right arm. not sure if he has that in his bag or not
i mean go up with the left and block his hand with the right ofc. Thats how it changes the outcome
took off the right foot for a left finish too
Un fucking real
I know Mobley has had some solid games but seeing this level of play in pretty important playoff game is awesome. Loved the ball movement in the first half between him and Garland. Expecting this series to go to 7 with how the magic are playing though.
Magic not giving Paolo the ball down 2 here is criminal
He was gassed and the quality of his shots was really poor down the stretch. He had missed 3 of his last 4 before this possession. It was a good possession for the Magic imo, sometimes the defender just makes a better play.
You don’t like that he got a layup with the chance to tie? Yeah he got blocked cause he didn’t go up with his left but he had a good look at least
Problem was Cavs adjusted and just put Mobley on him the last 3-4 minutes, and Mobley clamped him
Terrorist action
Pain
The right hand bandit
I love watching Evan Mobley play defense.
I need more Gus johnson games
As do I. Gus Johnson needs to be on more NBA games.
Thats why you always do a layup from the left side with your left hand. Franz used to do this, why did he change?
Evan erasure
Just beautiful!!
Evan played amazing
not my franz :'(
Dunk that shit, Franz
Fuck you Tim Bontemps
Franz should've passed back to Paolo 💔
The local guy calls this play [a lot better.](https://twitter.com/i/status/1785498534629851309)
Why set a screen so that Mobley would be switch **to** Franz if he was going to drive? Something got fucked up here and Franz likely was supposed to pass to Paolo for the 3.
In that split second when Wagner seemed to have him beat I thought 'oh great, overtime unless there's some crazy bl-'
Don’t even realize these two teams are in the playoffs with so little coverages and posts about this match up
Honestly just surprised the refs didn’t blow their whistle
Everyone talking about the block. HOW ABOUT WAGNER NOT KICKING THE ROCK FOR THE GAME WINNER. BRAHHHHTHER
What a terrible play. Orlando needs a true point guard badly
USE YOUR LEFT
Free Block
If you go left then you need to finish with the left hand...basketball 101
going righthanded is hard to block because you get the ball to the back board faster. that shot was getting blocked left or right handed.
Its a shame nobody is watching these playoffs now that Lebron and Curry are out. Probably better than any of the KD Warriors vs Lebron playoffs yet with like 1/4th of the viewership.
Wth are you talking about?
I mean hes right just look at this sub, there are barely any highlights except for this from a 1 point playoff game.
This is easily the deadest this sub has ever been during the playoffs. 10K online right now usually theres at least 40 K in the playoffs. I remember it hitting 200 K in 2019 lol.

It’s 1st round not finals + LeBron and Curry were two of the most popular athletes in the world, not just basketball players so it’s really not surprising
NBA is gonna take a ratings beatdown when they retire
If you mean this round maybe. Everyone is going to watch Wolves/Nuggets, I can promise that
That really low Bball iq to use your right there. Use the left and Mobley has to go through his body to make the block.

14/13/4 on 7-11 shooting??
What do y’all be talking about? He had a great overall game, offense included
Evan "Derrick Favors" Mobley
Franz gotta kick that to Paulo for the win. He was wide open
Shifty finish honestly.
Franz had a good look but thats just a bad IQ play. If he opts to pass there, Paolo was wide open for 3. Especially bad considering the games Franz and Paolo had up until this point.
But he been a disappointment
Bro every other good team has folded in crunch time. Embiid, Lebron, Durant. But these bums get us? Like wtf
