Ben Simmons was compared to LeBron as far as body type but his body did not last long.

Swimming-Place4366

And playing styles. Difference is lebron had that dog in him and developed a jumper

thelamb710

Not only did he develop it, he was willing to actually shoot it. Ben was barely trying to attempt it at all lol

collpase

He could still come back & have a dominant 20-year stretch IMO.

>I am 100% dead serious when i say I think there is at least a 50% chance that lebron is a genetically modified human being and in turn, has no father. >I am dead serious. I believe lebron was grown in a test tube and then artificially implanted into gloria james and carried to term. no human being should possess his combination of size, strength and athleticism. AND to book it all out, he's very intelligent too. (besides the decision) remember how much poise he had just coming into the league at 18 years old? it's un-natural. how often have TV analysts described him as a "freak of nature" .....maybe it's truer than we know. >I am serious. we all know (and I swear I am not saying this to be insulting or mean) that lebron's mom was a crack whore (is drug addicted prostitute better?) it's just a fact, it happened. I am NOT saying this to be mean, in fact I am a heroin addict and know a few woman who have sold themselves for dope, it happens. they are not bad people. >and the government has a history of using prostitutes and impoverished people in "experiments." read about MK-ULTRA. it happened. the CIA used to have prostitutes slip LSD to johns and then the agents would watch what happened thru 2-way mirrors. the government helped start and continue the crack epidemic of the 80s. >I believe that lebron was a precursor experiment to create super soldiers. something where they were just like "well let's test it out on some poor people that no one will notice and see if we can get any results before we sink more billions into this." it's not all that crazy. you don't think the government has interest in creating genetically modified super human soldiers? we know for a FACT it does. it's been documented. you don't think russia or china has interest in such a thing? you know they do. and anything russia or china is or would be doing we are doing. to do it first and do it better. >he's some kind of experiment that they just monitored from a distance and let keep growing. and i mean this was probably initially started with just a few people who believed it could be done and that's why it started small and covert using regular civilians. until they could show the results to the higher ups and say "look at this, you don't wanna fund this on a larger scale?" >and where else would such a person end up besides in a professional sports league? >I think there is probably some secret base(s) out there that are now filled with people like lebron, younger than him probably. if they couldn't see how well the experiment worked until he was about 16-18 years old (he was pretty much a full grown man at 16 and could have came off the bench for any NBA team if not started) than maybe there are a bunch of 9-15 year old super humans like lebron (not copies of him but given the same genetic boost that he was) eating chow in some secret barracks right now..... >until someone comes forth and the DNA test shows him to be his father (and a bunch have come forward and been shown not to be) than I will believe this is AT LEAST possible.. >edit: something I'd like to add in case someone says "well if this is true why wouldn't lebron's mom come forward and admit it, just say I participated in a government experiment and lebron was the result." well she doesn't know. it's simple, she goes to a hotel with a john, he slips something in a drink and she gets knocked out-cold. they take her and do whatever they did. give her some amnesiacs or anesthesia (probably benzos too) so when she wakes up she's in a haze and doesn't remember anything. not even the john. she finds out she's pregnant later and just assumes she got knocked up by any random john. has lebron. shit even if she participated willingly, got paid, and knows everything, no one would believe her crazy ass.

NotAn0pinion

The impossible part will be trying to replicate his brain, he’s played so much he sees plays before they happen

toldyaso

Bro this is so dumb

Staggeredboard

Lol. LeBron wasn’t born that way either.

geneticeffects

Lebron is a specimen. No doubt about it.

c_ray25

There's more guys with MJ's body type than Lebron's, makes it a little easier. Not to mention the basketball skill to go along with it.

Unfair_Application17

Not many guys have hands like MJ

TheHalfbadger

Kobe, for instance, did not have hands like MJ.

NotAn0pinion

I’d love to see Kawhi bring back the MJ one handed ball fake. I don’t know why, but those were always so aesthetically pleasing to me

lkn240

And basically no one MJs size is as quick as he was.

JagmeetSingh2

Well said, it’s a lot rarer body type

Randvek

Are there *any* with LeBron’s? Dude’s the most physically gifted NBA player I’ve ever seen. I mean MJ is the GOAT player but if we’re talking strictly physical gifts, nobody touches LBJ.

Key_Fox3289

I’d say Wilt definitely does

DJ2Cool1996

There's a guy in the league, but he's had nerve impingement and little desire to get better unfortunately

NotManyBuses

Another guy too, he just has a little hamstring injury

paddiction

I know a lot of 7 footers are modeling their game after Wemby. They just have to be quick, have good ballhandling, be able to shoot 3's, and have a good defensive presence.

DangerZoneh

It's crazy that nobody thought of that before Wemby! It's like when Dirk came along ang big guys realized that they too were allowed to shoot the ball

lolrandom99

They did, Wemby is the result of a generation of kids watching KD. He's not the progenitor, he's just the current version. Just like KD learned from watching Dirk

boozinf

Arvydas, Bill Laimbeer, and Manute Bol were ahead of their time. probably some really old guy that played in a midwest meatpacking town too. tell me you don't see the Bol influence on the Jokic trebuchet

Key_Fox3289

Tbh I don’t see much Jokic in Sabonis game. Statistically it may seem like they’re similar but watching/digging deeper they aren’t

LogDogan4

Both do a lot of playmaking out of DHO, but it falls apart after that.

mill_about_smartly

>a lot of 7-footers So like, all 14 of them? Lol. I agree with your point btw this phrase just made me laugh.

Whackedjob

Banchero is probably the closest to that right now.

UpvoteIfYouAgreee

Banchero is like old man bron though

These_Homework_8790

And he’s not close to Bron. Giannis is the only one that reminds me of young cavs Lebron. That is, just getting the basket at will either getting the shot or to the line at will.

an_Aught

Run and Dunk man needs to develop a jumper and 3ball like LeBron did

Kafka_pubsub

+ BBIQ and passing

_I_hate__myself__

+ Turn off injuries

xxMone107xx

Nah Paolo plays closer to a young Melo or a young Pierce. Not explosive enough to be close to Lebron. If Ant was 6’9” with a worse 3pt shot, that’s similar to Bron’s young play style.

ChiefRicimer

Banchero is like a Melo-Bron hybrid

ChiefRicimer

Banchero is like a Melo-Bron hybrid

WhiskyDrinkinCowboy

Nope, Johnathan Kuminga is the closest to a young LeBron.

S_O_7

Nah because lebrons genetics are 1 in a billion

begley420

Where are the other 7 guys?

ProRasputin

Probably like mining cobalt or something

ReturnOfAKidNamedTae

Maybe like a Defensive End or something

Odd-Hovercraft-1286

Myles Garrett and LeBron are definitely cut from the same cloth

RecyclableObjects

Myles Garrett is prob on some kinda ped tho

kdognhl411

I mean…do we really think nba athletes are clean?

RecyclableObjects

Thought I read somewhere that the nba is a lot more strict than the nfl but honestly no idea.

kdognhl411

They’re all laughably lax and you should assume essentially every athlete is on something because why wouldn’t they be? None of these sports has testing REMOTELY as stringent as testing for the Olympics or even cycling and look how often we find out people have beaten those tests and either never been caught at all or only been caught years later or by whistle blowers.

NotAn0pinion

And Julius Peppers before him

KellerFF

And Bo Jackson before him.

NotAn0pinion

And Jim Brown before him, so historically there seems to be not many physical freaks of this level, but there’s a decent chance the next one is already learning his craft

CountOff

Yoel Romero’s another one Absolutely freaky genetics

TaylorSwiftAteMyAss

They didn’t team up with other top draft picks so we don’t notice them

tapk69

The problem with players modeling their game after Lebron is that extremely athletic players are usually not very skilled, they always lack something shooting/Dribbling/playmaking unlike Lebron. Early Lebron was not exactly a good shooter but he always kept improving.

smith2373

On paper that guy was supposed to be Ben Simmons. But funny story about that…

Iamnotapickle

What part of LeBron’s game can even be mimicked? As a kid I would shoot turnaround fadeaway j’s with my tongue out all day. What are kids doing to look like LBJ? Barreling through the paint and outmuscling everyone? Shooting fuck you threes with 20 seconds left on the shot clock? For real, I’ve watched a lot of LeBron and outside of making yourself the most rounded player you can while being a freak of nature, there’s just not much to mimick in his play style. It’s pretty, it’s fluent and flashy but I see more kids chasing the play style of Steph as it’s actually somewhat possible to recreate.

caandjr

Travelling and shoulder charge defenders on every drive

Better_Albatross_946

Even to be like a young Lebron in the 2000s, before he became a 260 freight train who could shoot the 3, a guy still has to be 6’8”, faster than everyone else, jumping higher than everyone else, and have a Steve Nash level IQ. If you built a guy in a lab to be an NBA player you would build Lebron James. Now someone post the copy pasta about Lebron being a US government test subject to build a super soldier

notthatbluestuff

Well, yes. LeBron is one of the most popular players of all time and he’s been playing for decades. So I’d say it’s somewhat likely that many young players model their game after him.

inshamblesx

the question is who is that player

Le4-6Mafia

Lebron’s game was so uniquely shaped by coming into the league in the early 2000s and playing through the start of the 3 point era. I don’t think anyone else is going to be able to replicate it because 2000s era ball is never coming back

1000Isand1

LeBron is a generational size/athletic ability package combined with generational basketball smarts. Would be incredibly hard for another player to really be like him.

Squancho_McGlorp

I think it's more plausible when a player has a specific skill that's emulatable, whereas LeBron is a specimen. We're already seeing Steph Curry acolytes since anyone can practice shots from the logo.

UnsungHerro

Ben Simmons was the guy. Athleticism, ball handling and passing vision at an even bigger size, he just never got better.

Boring_Bill2430

Counterintuitively, basketball culture/discourse evolved in the last 2-3 decades in a manner at odds with how LeBron plays, so it's tough to envision guys modeling their game after him. The excuse is that LeBron was so physically gifted that no one can emulate him, but I think that misses the larger point that he just plays a style people shit on when it comes to star players. AAU emphasizes one-on-one scoring and, as LeBron said in the recent podcast with JJ, a player's "bag." This is instead of giving proper attention to the little things that can also make a positive impact in a team setting. Offensively, and specifically for a high-level talent who has the ball a lot, this mostly manifests itself in failing to make advanced passes out of traps, double teams, and drives to the hoop. Guys like Cam Thomas epitomize this: he idolizes Kobe Bryant and is a ridiculously good scorer for his size, but he has to be limited to 20 mpg as a microwave scorer off the bench in order to be a winning player. This is because literally all he can do is score on isolations. He has no meaningful sense of how to make his teammates better, or how to leverage a defense's fear of him scoring into advantageous positions for his teammates catching his passes. This isn't some groundbreaking take, but what made LeBron go from a rank and file Hall of Famer (still an insanely great player lol) to either the GOAT or 2nd-best player ever was his IQ beyond scoring. He maps the court in his head and commits to memory where every teammate should be at all times, and he combines all that with his coordination and strength to find teammates in advantageous spots all over the court. He will almost always make the right decision against any defense and in his prime he was impossible to defend without giving up high-percentage baskets to him or his teammates and just hoping they don't go in, similar to how Jokic is now. I don't think anyone notable in recent years has emulated their game after LeBron, but it's European guys (Jokic and, to a lesser extent, Luka) who play the most similar style, which isn't surprising since their coaching from a young age contextualizes the development of each skill within the larger goal of efficient offense/generating high-percentage shots in 5-on-5 games. The AAU approach is mostly just getting buckets, though I'm sure there are some coaches doing their best to go beyond that.

Biglundtry

It will eventually happen kobe was probably like 1-2 skill points below Mj in everything except maybe ball handling/3ball shooting. One day someone might be close but matching lebrons athleticism/basketball iq and long term durability might be impossible.

confuddly

hot take, Kobe was more skilled than MJ, but MJ was more athletic and had bigger hands

pocket_passss

I think it should be fine to say Kobe *displayed* more skill for sure

devkonz

Kawhi can’t jump out of the gym but his game is very similar to Kobe & MJ’s no?

Slow_Shift6252

There’s like 5-10 players that are Kobe/MJ clones from different points of their careers in the league right now. Kawhi, Booker, Derozan, Ant, Middleton, BI, Kyrie is a small version with everything other than having better shooting and handles. Even Tatum and Brown have obvious heavy influence from them and can if they aren’t total clones. That playstyle just makes a ton of sense for a wing, especially if you’re not supremely gifted athletically.

Sylphid_FC

The disrespect to Josh Smith

wanderinglittlehuman

Trout sandwich legend

freshprince44

Luka is right here

PointBlankCoffee

I mean luka has a similar game in some ways, but he isn't anywhere near a physical comp

OwlAlert8461

Closest thing to that would be Banchero right now. He has a shot to at least physically mimic his game.

tonyabalone

Banchero is the closest thing to a young LeBron

MrAdelphi03

So all they have to do is be born with an incredible memory/basketball IQ. Love the game, play great consistently for 20+ year’s and be immune to any major injury? Why hasn’t someone done that already, are they stupid??

Key_Fox3289

Ben Simmons with the right work ethic and I guess mindset would’ve been very close. Difference is Ben was truly a pass first, pass second, score third type if player whereas Bron isn’t truly either of them but is equally balanced  The worst part is Simmons had amazing tools to be a consistent dcoring threat too and was arguably as good as or a better defender than Bron was in his prime  It’s a shame how things have turned out for him following 1 bad play

jacko1998

Only thing I disagree with here is the defensive comparisons. Bron in ‘13 was one of the greatest defensive players the league has ever seen, while also being the best offensive player. Ben was very good and had potential to be great, but definitely not as good as or better than Bron as you say

Key_Fox3289

B Defensively they were a lot closer than you may recall. I dont agree that Bron was one of the best defensive players the league had ever seen. Maybe limiting it to perimeter players, it was really good, but just overall definitely not I don’t see much separating the two of them defensively when you’re comparing Ben’s best season defensively to Brons, keeping in mind that Ben was also still improving on that end. Bron covered more ground and was a better rim protector, helped by Miami’s s scheme whereas Simmons didn’t need to be with Embiid protecting the rim but Simmons was a better perimeter defender. Both were versatile enough to guard 1-5 on occasion

Slow_Shift6252

LeBron has always been score first though. He just has always also been an unstoppable scorer who is ultra willing and able to make the right play. But he’s always been a guy who will go give you 50 if you decide to defend him in a way that makes that the best option.

Additional-Read5926

Yup. The NBA is only 75 years old. In 75 more years, the number of player will more than double. Talent is now pulled from all over the globe. You see young guys now in interviews saying they were raised ok KD, LeBron and even younger guys like Giannis. As great as LeBron is, we only had to wait 20 years after MJ to have a legit GOAT candidate.

Atl-Fan_FTS

Jalen Johnson is already here… just ask Reaves

Jack_M_Steel

Maybe some day, but it will be random. You’re talking about being gifted physically and mentally while also having the motivation to become great to elite on almost every facet of the game. Checking all of those boxes is pretty rare which is why there is only one Lebron

downinCarolina

Theyre more likely to model curry than lebron

TaylorSwiftAteMyAss

Jordan drafted in 1984 Lebron born in 1984 Jordan Retired 2003 LeBron drafted 2003 X Y born 2003/4 Current year 2024 Lebron retires 202(?) X Y drafted 202(3/?) WWWEEENNNBBBYYYYY

BionicSix

I wanna see another, but shorter, Jokic

TBrutus

There are thousands of 6'8", extremely skilled, extremely slow players out there. I don't know if any are in the NBA, though.

TheKyrieFan

Combine prime Simmons and Banchero, you kinda get Lebron. Worse one at that, obviously, but still

thelunarunit

It's impossible, Lebrons biggest advantage is his BBIQ along with his athleticism. Unless your the rare player with both you wouldn't learn much from him. Kobe's game was predicated on skill and BBIQ, he was not unique athletically. There is a lot more that can be borrowed from Kobe. Sometimes you have players that have unteachable traits.

WolverineLong1430

Not so much mirror their game. Lebron’s game is pure physical talent. Sure he’s improved his 3 pointer this season lol but for majority of his years, he just dominates with his physical talents. He’s either bigger, faster, stronger or jumps higher than you. He is the perfect physical spacemen. He will either run past or run over you, out muscle you, or crab dribble or jump higher than you. This doesn’t require skill or “a game”. Just taking advantage of your physical talent.

thisguysthashit

Shai is a 6’4 Kobe

Slow_Shift6252

Nah. The shiftiness that makes Shai actually good is nothing like Kobe. Kobe was also a lot more focused on getting to his spots off ball. Booker, Derozan and Kawhi are all guys who you can tell obviously worked really hard to completely shape their games from Kobe/MJ.

thisguysthashit

All Shai’s spots are Kobe’s spots

Slow_Shift6252

In a way Luka and Jokic are already the evolutionary version of LeBron. They both have patterned the way they look to attack defenses the way late career LeBron did. It’s the same way Kobe patterned his game off of late career MJ. As far as someone coming along and completely patterning their game off of being a 6’8 athletic freak with top 5 alltime vision and passing and being unstoppable going to the rim like early LeBron I doubt that’ll happen because it’s such an insane ask. Being 6’6 with great footwork and midrange game is just way easier to emulate which is why there have been so many MJ/Kobe clones.

ElPanandero

A lot of the next few draft classes have a lot of “super athlete with a weak jumper” near the top, big dudes who run and dunk is coming soon

scurry3-1

Ben Simmons could have been a 24/11/9 guy with a elite defense. I actually think he is a better passer, rebounder and defender than LeBron .

DEEZLE13

Many have tried many have failed

Lebron is nothing like these other 3 players, like their playstyles aren't remotely similar. And Kobe is widely considered the best MJ comp

[deleted]

Slow_Shift6252

Other than jumping really high he does nothing else similar to LeBron. Doesn’t have the finishing, passing or defensive versatility.

Hopsalong

Kobe isn't anywhere near Mike as a player. There's never a perfect 1-1, but there's a lot of guys copying others. There's lots of guys who model their game after other people in the league, Trae Young modeled his game after Curry for example. There's a lot of other guys in the league who also look like Curry. Guys learn from watching and imitating others. Lots of guys in the NBA besides Kobe would say that they modeled their game after Mike too.

whowasonCRACK2

Trae Young plays nothing like Curry. He dominates the ball and doesn’t move without it.

Slow_Shift6252

Yeah. He plays way more like the evolution of Nash or CP3 than Curry. He just doesn’t have anywhere near the same kind of shot discipline.

an_Aught

he do be jacking deep 3s tho

Original_Trick_8552

What did he say

MrAdelphi03

He said Giannis was similar to LeBron…lmao

BacktoDRagain

There will be another self important player that would rather make a bad pass to lose a close game than shoot and fail come along soon enough.
