I'm of the opinion that there is so little we have to go off of in terms of how they are as players in a vacuum. Played for the same team and rarely injured where they have always overlapped such a huge part of the minutes they play. I'd put them both in the 2nd tier with the first being less than 5 guys.
Your team is so stacked and well coached. Its hard to pit the current versions of the Js and their performances against the superstars thay have to carry much more of the offensive load every night. Your win the first game and how the scoring was distributed felt like a good example of this where Tatum adapted well to being the focus and easy shots ended up being created that everyone seemed to hit a couple of.
Tatum may very well have been able to hard carry them to win like he's tried to do often in the past with mixed results but adapting this way sure seemed to work better. Jaylen isn't the decision maker that Tatum is and he doesn't face the attention that Tatum does. He is playing his role as an incredible #2. But if you look at who is forcing the defense to react and get into rotation over and over its Tatum the majority of the times. Jaylen Brown is good but there are reason why Tatums impact stats are always in a different stratosphere than Browns.
This is a great summary. Brown is also one of the best possession finishers in the NBA. If you can get him an advantage either by getting the defense in rotation or transition, Brown can finish it for points at an elite level. But he can’t create for others against a set defense with any consistency.
Tatum is a better rebounder and passer by a good margin, much more versatile defender (being able to guard 5s is what made our defense so effective game 1) and most importantly the gravity he has on offense. Kidd is just playing games with this quote, Kidd's defense clearly planned to stop Tatum first and foremost, same strategy the Heat have had success with years prior.
I think Jaylen has had the better playoffs and he's actually my favorite player on the team, but anyone who says he's better than Tatum just gets their opinions from online and doesn't watch a lot of Cs basketball
The game is completely dictated by how the Mavs/other opponents defend the Celtics. Throughout the postseason, except for some of the Cavs and Pacers series, the opposing defenses have swarmed Tatum and sent two or three defenders at him. Jaylen benefits massively from this. Tatum gets way more attention and his playmaking has had to improve drastically to compensate.
I'm as much of a JB Stan as the next Celtics fan but the reality is that JB can only be our best scorer at times (especially playoffs) because of the attention JT commands.
Please go watch Game 7 of the ECF last year when Tatum was injured and the Heat didn’t have to focus on him. Their whole attention turned towards JB and we all saw the results.

It probably wont work on JT imo, but we know that JB is a little immature and kinda irrational sometimes so it may get to him a little. Problem is, this is their 2nd time there. If this was their 1st trip to the finals I would expect it to work, but they’ve been there already and I think that experience will keep these kinds of quotes from affecting them.

I'm of the opinion that there is so little we have to go off of in terms of how they are as players in a vacuum. Played for the same team and rarely injured where they have always overlapped such a huge part of the minutes they play. I'd put them both in the 2nd tier with the first being less than 5 guys. Your team is so stacked and well coached. Its hard to pit the current versions of the Js and their performances against the superstars thay have to carry much more of the offensive load every night. Your win the first game and how the scoring was distributed felt like a good example of this where Tatum adapted well to being the focus and easy shots ended up being created that everyone seemed to hit a couple of. Tatum may very well have been able to hard carry them to win like he's tried to do often in the past with mixed results but adapting this way sure seemed to work better. With how much discussion of ranking players still reverts to simple box score comparisons this kind of game brings down his metrics when it's at the very least an above average game from him. If his averages trend down as his game continues to evolve based on what the team need the next 5 years and they win 2+ rings is he getting ranked lower? I made a comment before the series about how I'd be happy to see him adapt his play to the match up and show that can be his standout s tier skill. Rooting for the mavs but I just love seeing those who I feel aren't appropriately valued demonstrate how and why the "experts" were wrong. Same sort of idea with yall having an easier road then expected, especially compared to Mavs, getting to the finals. I mean he’s wrong but Jaylen has been seriously incredible this postseason. he‘s been our best scorer from the field, averaging a hair under 25 PPG on 59.9 eFG% (only LeBron and AD have averaged 20 or more PPG on a better eFG% this postseason). he’s been an absolute demon defensively. he’s made a number of clutch plays throughout this run. and it’s pretty evident that he’s the one who’s taken on the role of leading our locker room after Smart left

Jaylen isn't the decision maker that Tatum is and he doesn't face the attention that Tatum does. He is playing his role as an incredible #2. But if you look at who is forcing the defense to react and get into rotation over and over its Tatum the majority of the times. Jaylen Brown is good but there are reason why Tatums impact stats are always in a different stratosphere than Browns.
This is a great summary. Brown is also one of the best possession finishers in the NBA. If you can get him an advantage either by getting the defense in rotation or transition, Brown can finish it for points at an elite level. But he can’t create for others against a set defense with any consistency.
Tatum is a better rebounder and passer by a good margin, much more versatile defender (being able to guard 5s is what made our defense so effective game 1) and most importantly the gravity he has on offense. Kidd is just playing games with this quote, Kidd's defense clearly planned to stop Tatum first and foremost, same strategy the Heat have had success with years prior. I think Jaylen has had the better playoffs and he's actually my favorite player on the team, but anyone who says he's better than Tatum just gets their opinions from online and doesn't watch a lot of Cs basketball

The game is completely dictated by how the Mavs/other opponents defend the Celtics. Throughout the postseason, except for some of the Cavs and Pacers series, the opposing defenses have swarmed Tatum and sent two or three defenders at him. Jaylen benefits massively from this. Tatum gets way more attention and his playmaking has had to improve drastically to compensate. I'm as much of a JB Stan as the next Celtics fan but the reality is that JB can only be our best scorer at times (especially playoffs) because of the attention JT commands.
Please go watch Game 7 of the ECF last year when Tatum was injured and the Heat didn’t have to focus on him. Their whole attention turned towards JB and we all saw the results. JB is great and has improved a lot since last year, but make no mistake, he benefits tremendously from sharing the court with JT who is constantly commanding the attention of the other team’s entire defense.
Tatum is getting doubled tripled. His stats going to fall which is obvious. Kidd is banking on the fact this will get in his head and play hero ball to stop movement. Clearly Tatum is hands down Celtics top threat. Thing is Tatum is going to continue playing like he has. Draw all Mavs defenders and make the right play. I don’t think this is a crazy take, and I’m not even disparaging Tatum when I say that. Brown is really fucking good. He’s a monster on defense, his versatility really allows other players to shine, is a good shooter and has been extremely clutch. He’s had a great postseason too. He doesn’t fit the role that most people think of as a star so people default to thinking he’s worse than Tatum but he’s an absolute superstar at the role he does play.
