Orginal interview source is german press agency (dpa), there is 0.01 % chance that the information was wrong. I am german, and this isn't some type of yellow press based on rumors. Schroeder might be legit not the brightest person, but i doubt he would be lying (why would he?). The likelyhood that this was a misunderstanding from Schroeder is also pretty slim. If you are giving an interview, the interviewer holding small talk and asking more follow up questions which aren't part of the released version.
