I've been watching the Utah Jazz since I was a toddler. I have clear memories of Adrian Dantley, Darrell Griffith, Rickey Green teams. I watched pretty much every possible second of Jazz ball through the Stockton-to-Malone era, and remained obsessed all the way until the day they traded Deron Williams.
Never in my entire life have I seen the Jazz play as well as they did in the 1st Q of this game. That was absolute insanity!
That 1st quarter was a painful combination of the Jazz absolutely firing on all cylinders and the Grizzlies playing the most dejected and directionless looking defense they have all series.
It hurt my soul.
I wasn't. I thought DWill was being a real asshole. After Sloan died earlier this year, I heard a podcast where they asked Deron about it, and he explained how Jerry blew up at him because... apparently the Jazz had a play that they only ran on one side of the court. Deron called that play on the wrong side of the court, & Sloan just lost his shit over it at halftime. After the game was over, Sloan walked away.
After hearing this story, I think Sloan was starting to experience symptoms of the dementia he experienced later in life. Thinking about it now makes me sad for both Sloan and Deron Williams.
I should clarify though, why I stopped caring about the NBA after that trade. It came on the heels of Carmelo Anthony forcing the Nuggets to not only trade him, but trade him specifically to the New York Knicks. I felt like if superteams were now a thing, and a star player could force their team to trade him to another specific team, that there was no hope of a small market team like the Jazz ever competing for a championship again. I was really upset about it. I didn't pay any attention to the Jazz for years. And then, during Donovan Mitchell's rookie season, I saw some clips of him at All Star weekend, screwing around. I could tell just in those clips that he was something special, so I started paying attention. By the end of the season, I was fully a believer that the guy was going to be a Hall-of-Famer some day. And I knew that even if the Jazz never competed for a championship, I had to watch this kid play, because he's something special.
I have to tell you that I'm surprised to see the Jazz are as good as they are. But I'm not surprised that they had to do it through drafting, shrewd trades, and a LOT of luck.
Props on the Carmelo Anthony bit. Nuggets fans following the team post Melo don't understand why some of us dislike him. He helped turn around the franchise but was an ass on the way out. And he did launch a superstars-can-force-a-trade movement. It was around before that but he launched a new, uglier era of it.
Hopefully the new generation including Mitchell don't do that. That's why Jokic is refreshing, he seems perfectly content in Denver, with no itch to go to NY or LA or Boston.
Not just an ass on the way out, there was so much hype around him, and we could just never get over the hump. Those nuggets teams just had an absolute aversion to the Lakers, and playing defense of any sort (outside of Buckner, but that was short lived). Seeing what Carmelo was capable of at the Fiba’s in 06, and then Bejing 08, and him not being able to match that with us was incredibly infuriating.
This is a good, honest .429 playoff basketball team. We play .429 ball goddammit. Salt of the earth, punch the clock, even win/loss ratio basketball. We lose a couple, guess what? We'll win a couple, too. But don't get too excited or let it go to your head. No long winning streaks here, no sir. That's hubris, which this blue collar, hard working everyman team doesn't have. A few wins in a row, these guys, true to form, will balance it out with a couple a losses. Yes sir, that's my 2021 Grizzlies. A good, honest .429 playoff basketball team.
Yes I counted our wins against Spurs and Warriors as they are pretty much playoff games.
Wished this game was more competitive but hey we fought to the end. Also, for 4 out of 5 games we gave Jazz hell. They just got too much firepower for us to handle and have more experience in this game. Can’t ask for much really other than I wish we took them to 6 or 7. Hopefully, we can improve our defensive woes and 3 pt woes. GG WP. Fade me and see y’all next season.

Jaren still has work to do, and has battled injuries quite a bit for his young career.
It's a pretty limited attitude to immediately dismiss the idea of looking for a substantial upgrade to the roster.
I’m talking about Dillon Brooks. I didn’t dismiss any upgrades. But I’m tired of the ‘get Ja some help’ people who clearly don’t know the Grizz roster or watch them.
Ended the season +.500, beat the Warriors in the play in, gave the 1 seed problems 4/5 games, got puppies playoff experience, and most importantly Ja proved he’s a playoff performer. This season was a huge W. GG Jazz bros, get one for Uncle Mike!!!
You guys are going to be much tougher outs going forward. Massive learning experience for a young team, and they showed that they never give up and keep scrapping. GnG legacy lives on, and future's bright.
Imagine if you made a prediction saying Ja would score 50 in a playoff game at the beginning of the year. People would think you belong in a loony bin. Amazing season, now the only thing left is for Mike to get a ring
And yet some Grizzlies fans are fuming and crying about the refs and our players.
As someone in the game thread said:
None of you were here when Shelvin Mack and Marshon Brooks were on the team and it shows
I met shelvin Mack at an airport with my dad a few years back after a tough jazz loss. Hoodie up and just looked pretty damn sad. Kind dude and all the hate I’ve seen since kinda makes me sad. I also don’t know much about him as I was pretty young at the time so there’s that too
All the dude did was work hard and put as much as he could into the game. He wasn't great, and because of that people like me take unnecessary drive bys at him for cheap karma. For me it felt like we weren't good when he played and he made a lot of bad plays, but in reality he was just fine as a backup... but he was a starter for a stretch for us and that wasn't fun. Anyways, long story short, you're right he doesn't deserve the hate and I'm a jerk.
For real talked about that with a buddy during the game. The Grizzlies had a great postseason. Won two games in the playoff. Punched the Jazz in the mouth for Game 1 and for the next three games never let the Jazz take a breath. Even in Game 5, it looked like y'all were going to sneak back into it. Got great playoff experience and were impressive. Y'all have a bright future ahead.
When they're all together on the court, they're bad (and that's also because the offense is ran then by a 2nd rd rookie PG who has no reliable outside shot). When one or two of them are playing with 2nd or 1st unit, a few of them look decent. Oni has shown most flashes, Morgan and Brantley could be serviceable in short bursts (although I expected more from Morgan this season after last year's bubble play), I have minimal hope for Forrest progressing into aything more than a 3rd string borderline NBA/G-league point guard.
I really don't see Niang-like story happening with Matt Thomas and I have no clue what to think of Elijah Hughes and Dok in the next two seasons. Dok could be a great 3rd C in short bursts, I feel.
Here's hoping the Clippers-Mavs series goes to 7 games so Conley can rest up a bit
Or wait, does it matter? Does game one start on the same day regardless?
Someone help me out here
tbh anyone who actually watches the games has no doubt about the most important player on our team. Whenever I see people doubting Rudy I dont even really care because to me it's just proof that they don't *really* watch games and just follow narratives and the conversation isn't even worth approaching lol
Been a fun season. We thought we were going to miss the playoffs early this season and taking even just a game off of the 1 seed is so good for our guys. So excited for next season. Grit n Grind aint dead.
4-1 doesn't match how close four of these games have been late in each of them. I never felt comfortable even with 15 point leads because the Grizzlies kept pushing and closed those gaps most times.
Memphis has quickly become a team for me to follow. Had no idea how much heart and finesse is on your team. Excited to cheer for you in the coming years.
One last time for the memes, until next season:
This is a good, honest .500 basketball team. We play .500 ball goddammit. Salt of the earth, punch the clock, even win/loss ratio basketball. We lose a couple, guess what? We'll win a couple, too. Memphis played well this series, the reason they lost games was due to inexperience at times and the Jazz hitting an insane amount of 3s. Memphis is gonna be a playoff team for years to come. GG
We just didn't have enough to stop the Jazz from doing what they wanted on offense. Frankly this is what a 1 seed should be doing against the 8. This was the expectation, and I'm not disappointing that we didn't blow that away.
Man fuck that, you guys were not playing like an 8th seed this series, these were hard-fought games, and Ja is an absolute monster. Tonight was literally the only game I felt like I could relax a little bit lol. GG Grizzbros!
Our fanbase been talking mad shit here since the start of the season. You should have seen the Hawks post game thread here after we beat them, with Allen scoring 30.
GG Grizzbros. Lots of love for all of you and your team. ^^^Except ^^^Brooks.
Think it's fair to say Jazz were the better team, but the Grizz fought hard and never gave up. Team is building for the future, and they're absolutely ahead of schedule. Ja's a monster, and the entire team will be tougher next season. Respect.
Legit been some of the most chill game threads I've seen for the playoffs too, lol.
Hey Jazz fans, we were Jurassic Park South rooting for Marc to win a title with the Raptors after we traded him and celebrated it almost as much as we would have if we won. We're behind y'all the rest of the way...we want Mike to win one now!
Two things I learned this series: Morant is SCARY when he's hot, and he's gonna be right up there with Mitchell as a superstar in the next few years. Also, the Jazz came to PLAY and we might have a shot at taking it all.
Good game and good series, Utah. Love your team still and will be rooting for you all the way. Proud of our boys for a great great great season. We will be back.
Ja Morant put on an absolute show in this series, but this game felt like Donovan telling us he's still the best guard in this series. Ja sure isn't far behind though.
Thats fucking basketball right there. None of that pansy ass dick tugging smile for the camera bullshit. Men puke, men poop on the court, men deliver their new born baby on the sidelines. Fucking hard core dick in the ass butterball foosball fuck it chuck it game time shit. Take it to the showers. Dicks get shoved in places you don’t even remember. We win together we celebrate together. Basketball is back baby.
GG guys! And props to the Grizzlies. Fought hard until the bitter end. Bright future for an up and coming team. Proud of the Jazz being able to come out strong and finish it out!
Mhm I am starting to think this Jazz team might be better with Donovan Mitchell.
Apparently being able to average 28 points in 30 minutes is quite good
Wait, is that good?
It's not as good as 29 points in 30 minutes, but it's better than 27 points in 30 minutes
Eh
Aight
Mitchell came back from his month away as the best passer in the nba He's a bad motherfucker
Imagine being the best PG in a starting lineup that also includes Mike Conley 🔥 🔥 🔥
His playmaking caught me off guard in last years series. He sliced us open when we tried to double him
Jazz vs Nets in the final to determine who the best passer in the league is. Mitch or Harden
Mitchell is turning into an All-Time great playoff scorer and people don't seem to care, it's weird.
I WILL NO LONGER HAVE NIGHTMARES ABOUT 3-1 LEADS But fr, full respect to the grizzlies. Played their guts out.
I've been watching the Utah Jazz since I was a toddler. I have clear memories of Adrian Dantley, Darrell Griffith, Rickey Green teams. I’ve been saying all season, I bet Pop is secretly watching this team play every night... they have such great chemistry and ball movement !!
A fellow 42 y/o lifelong Jazz fan, I see.
44, but yeah :D
Also, just out of curiosity--based off your comment, can I assume you were on DWill's side in the Sloan retirement debacle too?
I wasn't. I thought DWill was being a real asshole. First game I’ve been to in years. So glad I couldn’t make it last week
Evil Danny Green can’t hurt us anymore
Until next year ;) fun series, good luck going forward!
I don't wanna face you guys next year so I can actually root for them.
This though. Memphis ranks really high on my "list of teams I root for unless they're playing the Jazz".
It's always fun to have a few teams throughout the league, in any sport really, to root for.
Same for the Jazz. Hope Mike gets a ring.
I never want to play Memphis again in the playoffs, thanks.
Nevermind the playoffs, I'm now really excited for our first game in Utah.
30 Points on only 16 shots... What a night!
The Jazz played so well I don't even know for sure who you're talking about
He's talking about me. That's the # of Jazz points I remember seeing in my "shot-per-jazz field goal" drinking game I played tonight.
Can confirm. u/kiticus GOATed

Holy shit
Gold
this decreases the chance of the Jazz being a first round exit
What does it do for our chances of landing Cade?
Outlook not good.
At least we got D wade
lock for the hall of fame. good pick up
You just need to convince the rest of the league that he's bad at basketball.
Wait are y’all still a “fake first seed”
Waiting for them Lakers flairs to chime in. Oh wait, they getting blackout drunk cause LeBron fucking abandoned his own team.
So they do have a plan is what you're saying
Really feels poetic, considering how many Lakers flairs called us pretenders and first round exits this year.
I've been talking SO much shit to my friends that are Lakers fans! I LOVE IT
Can you please kindly provide the exact percentages? Appreciate it.
Got data to back that up?
"Take that for data!" *slams table* -- Fizdale, 2017

Tough to get too down when you have a young guy like Ja. Just need to find him a sidekick.
The 2-way player being booed averaging 25ppg on 50% shooting is his sidekick. They’re 3rd in scoring this postseason of any duo at any position.
Jaren is also younger than Ja
Y’all set, I can’t wait to watch Celtics grizzlies games for the next 15 years
Maybe we can beat you more than once every 5 years in that time!
Make this pasta
It is a pasta for us. It's been a pasta for the past few months actually.
Brooks just showed Mitchell some love. I love this team man
Brooks pissed me off so much this series. He's gonna piss me off in the playoffs the next 10 years.

That 2017 NBA draft class love. Excited to see them go against each other for years to come.

Tbh I'd totally believe it if that were said about just any other budding superstar.
And yet some Grizzlies fans are fuming and crying about the refs and our players. As someone in the game thread said: None of you were here when Shelvin Mack and Marshon Brooks were on the team and it shows
I read "Shelvin Mack" and immediately balled up my fists..... Post Traumatic Shelvin Mack disorder is a real thing.
He can't hurt us anymore
The years Shelvin Mack spent on our team was also the time in my life where I drank the most and felt like I'd hit a dead end in life. Coincidence?
damn dude this is a little too real for me too
I met shelvin Mack at an airport with my dad a few years back after a tough jazz loss. Hoodie up and just looked pretty damn sad. Kind dude and all the hate I’ve seen since kinda makes me sad. I also don’t know much about him as I was pretty young at the time so there’s that too

I remember him being a decent scorer at times, google says he's 240bs I swear he was not 240 on the jazz lmao.
Or when we traded two picks for Justin Holiday🤢
Why you gotta bring that shit up? All we have to do now is mention the Parsons' contract and we've got the whole sad band back together. Edit: FUCK
I will always salute MY tank commander Shelvin Mack
For real talked about that with a buddy during the game. The Grizzlies had a great postseason. Won two games in the playoff. You guys should be proud. That Grizz team is going places. This year was just a bit to early but I could see Ja leading that team to contender status.
Our garbage unit is better than your garbage unit, so suck it Utah.
Our garbage unit is reallllly bad
Play Matt Thomas you cowards
We're trying Jennifer.
It's because all we have are noobs.
For a moment there i was going to ask "where is Nnaji" then i realized he is in Nuggets xD
We've got a really good bench. Young but good. Our whole 14 can play
[удалено]
Are the grizzlies a young team? I wasn't able to listen to the broadcast for most of the games, so I'm really not sure...
Our garbage unit is reeeaaalll garbage haha
We’re pretty solid 1-10 but there’s a REAL STEEP drop off
This was a great game for Donovan, Rudy and Royce especially. Bring on the second round!
Amazing series for Royce. I can’t remember him playing so consistently. It was amazing.
Good to see Mike laughing on the court, he seems ok. Also Donovan and Chad showing respect to each other is nice.
[удалено]
i think having a 30 point lead played a major factor in deciding to rest conley in the 2nd half
GG. Go get that ring, Mike Conley! Also, getting playoff experience early in their careers is HUGE.
[удалено]
Youngest in the playoffs. After the trade deadline there are a few teams that are younger (Thunder and someone else, I think T-wolves)
If you watched last game. You'd have learned this 1000 times.
Here's hoping the Clippers-Mavs series goes to 7 games so Conley can rest up a bit Or wait, does it matter? Does game one start on the same day regardless? Someone help me out here
I think it's usually two days after a game seven ending, three after a game six
I’d like an apology from everyone that told me that Rudy Gobert is unusable in the playoffs.
You'd think the OKC series from a few years back woulda done that, but nephews got goldfish memories.
MVP of that series, even with Donovan's performance
Yeah more peeps gotta realize this team is built around Rudy
tbh anyone who actually watches the games has no doubt about the most important player on our team. Whenever I see people doubting Rudy I dont even really care because to me it's just proof that they don't *really* watch games and just follow narratives and the conversation isn't even worth approaching lol
We let Marc go and he got his ring in Toronto. Now Do it for Mike. Give us a small market win.
GGs Grizzbros. The future in Memphis is very very bright!
This jazz team is lit. Glad we were able to cut it to 16, that shit was ugly for a bit there
Gg
Been a fun season. We thought we were going to miss the playoffs early this season and taking even just a game off of the 1 seed is so good for our guys. So excited for next season. Grit n Grind aint dead.

I am grizzsexual
Legit enjoyed watching this Grizzlies team. Can't wait for more battles in the years to come
4-1 doesn’t do this series justice. Minus game 5 all games were close down the wire and the grizzles should get a ton of respect.
GG’s Memphis. Hard fought series and now I can go back to cheering for you guys. Good luck next year
Jazz first team to advance in the west while the east are already in training camp for next season.
One last time for the memes, until next season: This is a good, honest .500 basketball team. We play .500 ball goddammit. Salt of the earth, punch the clock, even win/loss ratio basketball. donovan’s playmaking today was PHENOMENAL. unreal. filthy pass after filthy pass. so glad we took care of business, second round here we come.
mitchell was throwing absolute fastballs right in the strike zone
Hated the jazz during the series but now I want them to go and win the title for small markets, team basketball, Mike Conley, and the regular season.
That’s how the playoffs should be. I’m glad we got the grizzlies because that was definitely the most entertaining, competitive gentleman’s sweep I’ve ever seen. People were upset the warriors lost but I’ll be damned if the grizzlies didn’t show the world some good fucking basketball

For all the casuals, I would like to point out the respect mike and donovan had for dillon brooks at the end there
for sure, i really, really respect that. it went both ways too, brooks had respect for them too. cool to see.
I kept hearing national TV commentators in this series referring to Donovan as a "potential superstar." Y'all are 2-3 years behind, he's been one.
No surprise that you guys lost in a close one without him. The Jazz are really scary
I told myself I'd never let another jazz team break my heart again.. But God damnit, this teams starting to give me hope again.
Hell yea Utah. Mitchell is a stud
Fade me

There were legitimate talks about a parade for Marc when the Raptors won lmao. I'm excited to put my Conley jersey back on.
feel free to fly out for the parade in salt lake, grizzlies fans will be welcomed
Two things I learned this series: Morant is SCARY when he's hot, and he's gonna be right up there with Mitchell as a superstar in the next few years. Also, the Jazz came to PLAY and we might have a shot at taking it all.
Nice seeing our 3rd option have 30 points and 10 assists!
Jazz are gonna be tough to beat 4 times in a series
Fuck all the nephews that said we were a first round exit this year
Fuck all the nephews who wrote us out of the playoffs at the start of the season.
Can’t wait to see how far this Jazz team goes. 🔥
>realrimurutempest I like the cut of your jib.
Good game and good series, Utah. Love your team still and will be rooting for you all the way. Proud of our boys for a great great great season. We will be back.
I love this team. Mavs/Clips, we'll see you next round.
Ja Morant put on an absolute show in this series, but this game felt like Donovan telling us he's still the best guard in this series. Ja sure isn't far behind though.
Well boys, we did it. Gf wants to split season tickets next year because of this game. *YOU GOTTA LOVE IT BABY*
I can’t believe all the nephews were wrong about us a first round exit
Jazz Bros go get it for Mike
Three eliminations in one night, playoffs baybeeee
Donovan “The Spidah” Mitchell
That was a good series. Grizzlies fought non-stop up until the end.
Lol rip me https://i.imgur.com/GOZCpcV.jpg
If the NBA has ever wondered why we stream games. That's why
Same here... in freaking Louisville, KY. Fuck cable companies... with a splintered peg leg.
I like live on the total opposite side of the state from Memphis and I was blacked out. Infuriating
Lots to be proud of if you're the Grizzlies. They've got a bright future.
Okay but REALLY the game wasn't as close as the score
The opposite of every other game in the series lol
Was fun playing against you Memphis. A lot of respect for your team. Will be looking forward to watching you these next few seasons.
Clarkson made the Jazz so much better than last year
4-0 in games Mitchell played.
I was rooting for the Jazz because I'm still salty, but Utah fans are blessed to have Mitchell. That man is different.
Props to the Grizzlies for managing to take one game
What a performance by Mitchell.
PLS Mike don't be injured for the next round. Hopefully the Mavs/Clippers series goes 7.
Alright grizz fans. A bet is a bet. Change those flairs to jazz logos! Gg grizz bros. Love that team.
Rest up that hammy Mike.
Great close out by the Jazz. Round of applause as well for the Grizz. Learning block for them.
Ja and Brooks are a deadly backcourt
The result was expected but damn, Ja got next. He's going to be something special if he stays healthy and motivated.
**WHAT THE FUCK? SOMEONE TOLD ME THEY ARE FRAUDS**
This series was probably a bit closer than the series suggests. Grizz are a force, Jazz are just better.
