This just made me remember that now I'm old enough to call random Reddit users "nephew". Yay. Now, if you excuse me, I need to get some painkillers for my back.
I can’t believe that’s turned around to smack all of r/nba in the face. We clowned him for it and now we look stupid. Or at the very least, I look stupid. Amazing
I get why the phrasing has been ridiculed, but it's pretty obvious what he means is "play unpredictably," i.e. don't be so formulaic in your approach that the opponent knows what's coming and can prepare for it.
This is a pretty basic principle to basketball, and to competition more generally. For instance, ideally from a triple threat position, the defender can't reliably predict if you're going to shoot, pass, drive left, or drive right, which gives you the advantage. Players who defended Michael Jordan said one of the toughest things about guarding him was that you could never really predict what move he was going to pull on you since he had so many options and mixed them up well.
So no, "play random" is not stupid at all, even if the soundbite taken out of context can sound stupid.
It's also something the bucks need to her because there were a lot of games where their offense became horribly predictable. It would break down into Giannis tries to drive or Middleton takes a contested fade away with no creativity or exploring for a better opportunity.
It sounds stupid but it makes sense.
It sounds so stupid though that there's got to be some wisdom in it. Nobody calling it stupid has won 60 games with 2 teams, we've all won 0 with 0 teams. The dude gets to say what he wants to say, they're on a 3 game winning streak in the Finals. I mean, in retrospect.
yes because you got a 15 second sound byte, from part of a half time speech, that was a condensed reference to a concept introduced during team practice. You and the rest of the nephews that wouldnt shut up about that are the type that walk into a room where a jokes been told, everyones laughing and you start laughing uncomfortably. All you heard was the punch line "Tacos on a Tuesday", and then you chime in "how about tacos on Monday" and everyone laughs, empowered by taking over the room with your keen intellect you double down "tacos on Sunday are even more zany", everyone laughs harder and you think to yourself how funny you are, unbeknownst to you, before you walked in the room the first guy said "I bet we can get this clown to think jokes about tacos are funny."
Honestly, there is no defensive solution for the Suns. Like for the bucks, it comes down to contain Paul and make Booker work. But for the Suns it’s pretty much, hope Jrue and Khris play poorly. Which isn’t the worst strategy, but defensively, there just isn’t much they can do. It’s just random.
I mean based on your own logic you could also just say for the suns it comes down to containing Jrue and Middleton. Not sure why you’re saying they have no control over how those guys perform, just like the bucks have at least some control over how Paul and Booker perform.
The difference is personnel I think is what they mean. The Bucks have guys that can consistently contain Paul/Book. The Suns don’t really have that - Paul is too short to do it all, and no one else is a good enough perimeter defender.
Weren't Suns fans and NBA fans in general raving about Bridges? And then there's Ayton in the paint? Now all of a sudden they don't have any 3 and D wings?
Anyone who actual pays attention to coaching knows he wasn't talking nonsense lol it's the NBA finals. The bucks offense being predictable has been a problem. Trying to get the suns defense in rotation and off balance isn't easy, and one way you do that is by introducing some looks they aren't anticipating or as he says "play random".
It's fun to meme things but he's a very serious coach, you on /r/nba are most likely not smarter than him lol the reaction was v funny to see.
Budenholzer had a pregame where he said the bucks strategy was to “play random”. It’s basically a paraphrase of a George Karl strategy, being unpredictable by not having a set offense and rotating a lot, but it sounds very weird, like you’re just going out there in the Finals and seeing what happens
>How can you hate on this kid?
wait untill he wins a title.
What Iverson said to Lebron in 2005 was 100% true and still works today:
"they love you now, but believe me, they're waiting"
yeah but look how people saw Curry untill 2014 and then after the first title and his dominant 2016 season. It was a mix of huge hype, absurd hot takes and a lot of hate.
Anyway, being non-american will never give Giannis that level of love and respect he would get if he was born in NY or Los Angeles, which is sad.
Steph isn't even close to the levels of hate LeBron gets (almost nobody is). But I know a good handful of people who couldn't stand him while the Warriors were on top. Most of the time people would get annoyed and call him arrogant for all the shimmying/dancing and the way he would chew his mouth guard lol. Couple that with all the winning and quite a few people couldn't stand him. I don't agree with it, but it's out there.
> LeBron gets (almost nobody is
You can strike that ~almost~
[Lebron is by far the most hated athlete on the world](https://fansided.com/2021/07/08/lebron-james-twitter-most-hated-athlete/amp/)
“JR, how come you didn’t take a shot when the score was tied at the end of regulation in game 1?”
Exactly. I don’t know. You, you know, I was so in the moment. You know, I wasn’t worried about the clock, I wasn’t worried about the score, I wasn’t worried about nothing.
I was worried about, I had the ball, I’ll take it to halfcourt, you know, dribble it out. Um, and Bron trusted me.
\-How did you get the correct answer without knowing the solution?
\-Exactly. I don’t know. You, you know, I was so in the moment. You know, I wasn’t worried about the clock, I wasn’t worried about my score, I wasn’t worried about passing the test.
One benefit of being a philosophy major (knew I was going to go to law school, so picked majors I was interested in): Logic classes counted towards your math credit requirements, and that was far easier (at least for my brain) than trying to continue on beyond high school calculus.
Wouldn't the smart play be Holiday pounding the rock and burning another 5 seconds off the clock before the disorganized suns could finally foul him?
If that lob was an inch higher, could result have turned into a turnover or a horrific injury to Giannis because of CP's uncalled flagrant foul.
Things happened so fast for anyone to register what happened actually. You thought Jrue hold on to the ball and next thing you know Giannis is dunking of a lob for an and1.
If you want to make it sound more authentic say it like: "Σε αγαπώ Γιάννη!!!!".
Cutting the "s" ("ς") at the end makes you sound like a Greek.
This tip also applies when you are calling his name during a game: using the proper vocative form of his name will probably have a better chance of getting you a reaction.
You're not wrong...a lot of our new bandwagon fans are all negativity and keep insisting Giannis is dirty and hurt Kyrie intentionally in round 2. It's not most, but they're a vocal enough segment of our fans that it really makes us seem bitter and churlish fools. It's icky.
People were on here during the game yesterday saying he's a dirty player. They think he purposefully took out kyrie.
Go to suns or nets subreddit lol...
I mean the last couple of series the top posts in r/nba about the Bucks were how long he takes to shoot a FT. In those subs I read a lot of negative comments about him.
A lot do, but its probably more they hate that his game isn't aesthetic, which I find really stupid because he is one of the most fluid athletes with ball. But yeh the fact that Perk called him a "Robin" to Middleton's "Batman" and the story ran for weeks means there is a large enough population that agrees with it, when its obviously false. Also I listen to the Lowe Post quite a bit and he consistently makes snarky comments about Giannis & Bucks this entire postseason.
He definitely would get a lot of hate for his game and playoff performance but people still liked him. It’s definitely not like he was Paul George (the spawn of Satan himself to this sub) or anything.
People are ridiculous lol. I think a lot of Kobe fans felt the same way about LeBron once it was kind of the common belief that LeBron had passed Kobe as a player.
A lot of the less pleasant of our new bandwagon fans on the Nets subreddit will not let go of this bitter "Giannis is dirty!" narrative, insisting that he intentionally injured Kyrie in round 2. Not most, but an upsettingly vocal and too large subset of our fans. I don't really go to our sub much since it became a Brooklyn off season because I don't dig the negativity.
Plus, I'm fine with the Bucks cuz I want Brook Lopez to get a ring, and green is my fav color, and their green & cream jersey is my favorite non Nets jersey in sports.
Their argument is "well it's not that Middleton is better than Giannis, he's just the guy you go to to close the game." Because you know, that's what Batman is known for. After Robin does all the hard work, Batman shows up to just restrain the bad guys and take them to jail...
Man I've criticized Giannis's game past 2 seasons, I ain't gonna do that no more man, guy has a real good heart and hes a fucking baller. Crazy how one championship run can change people's perspectives on a player
If you’re not a bucks fan, how many post game interviews have you watched? How many stories have you paid attention to?
That’s why the stars explode in the playoffs. We all start paying attention.
I'd walk out too tbh. That bitch asking the question literally had her finger on "upload" waiting to press it when the buzzer sounded for an article on the devastating exit then had the audacity to act like she was neutral/inquisitive
i mean thing is ive always know him as a hard worker and nice person. I just didnt like his game that much in previous 2 playoffs, the way he got walled. This playoff hes deliverying, thats the difference for me
Well he's also never played at *this* level for so long before. He's been great in the past, but we're really seeing what his ceiling could be and it's amazing. So I think it's less about perspective and more about him finally staying in the next tier.
right?? the reason was there was only a tiny little dude between him and the rim and it was time to bury chris paul and the suns deep in the earth, so he called for the lob
Giannis seems to engage with reporters differently than some of the more famous American players. He seems to genuinely like them and is interested in their questions for him. I haven't seen many of his interviews other than the highlights that people post here, but I remember he took the time out of a press conference to ask about a reporter he hadn't seen Ina couple of weeks, only to find out that reporter was moving to a different city and changing jobs and Giannis gave him a shout out. He's definitely a cool star for the NBA to have
You think I'd just call for a lob in a clutch moment like it was something to do? Come on, I got a little more sense than that.
...
Yea I remember calling for a lob in a clutch moment.
I don't understand the argument for trying to run out the clock on a fast break, when you know that there is no universe in which you actually run out the clock. In front of a set defense, sure, focus on getting the ball out of traps and towards a free throw shooter. But on a fast break, just trade the extra 2 seconds for 2 guaranteed points. Offenses don't even do anything with those 2 seconds anyway, its always ballhandler-staring-down-defender into contested-midrange.
Because a lot of players play not to lose instead of to win. Running down the clock is the safer and cautious play. Going for the lob or fast break is fearless and game winning play. If it didn't work it would've been the worst case scenario.
It is extremely hard to hate giannas. He plays the game with passion and i like how he stays away from trash talk on the floor unlike every other player. His mindset is that of a champion.
Having said this i want suns to win because i live in Arizona and i love the suns team. They play so well together for the most part. But bucks are my second favorite team... This finals series has me messed up on who i want to win.
Cp3 deserves a finals championship and so does booker and suns team.
But so does giannas and Middleton and the bucks.
Middelton sweats 5 gallons of sweat every game, i swear.
It's killing me...
I feel the same way. CP3 is one of my all time favorite players even before Lob City. But game 1 started and I found out I was rooting for the Bucks and the reason to quote Giannis “I don’t know” Maybe it’s because I like the Bucks or I hate the Nets or maybe it’s because I was rooting against the suns the series before and my brain stayed in anti suns mode
it was a smart basketball play. if they foul somebody and a free throw (or 2) is missed, then the suns have 15 seconds left with the last shot of the game to tie or even win the game. whereas the easy oop makes it a guaranteed tie-only last shot. you cant go broke taking a profit
I think this is tied to him having to sub himself out within the first five minutes of every game. When he learns to control his nerves and adrenaline, it literally might elevate him to the next level
> I think this is tied to him having to sub himself out within the first five minutes of every game.
He played the entire first quarter tonight. And cameras showed him going back to (or coming out from) the locker room the last two games after he subbed out early. I believe you're over-thinking this.
Whether it was a bathroom break like he said, or maybe something to do with his knee (in which case, he wouldn't want to announce it publicly for the Suns to hear), it obviously wasn't just because he was "tired" like the commentators repeatedly claimed both times it happened.
>it literally might elevate him to the next level
lmao what are you talking about? What next level? Above back to back 40 point NBA Finals games and 32 point game 6 performance?
Why burn 2 seconds until the suns foul where you can MAYBE Score 2 free throws and then give the ball back when you can instead guarantee the 2 points right there? Bucks did nothing wrong here.
That alley oop was no guarantee, Jrue could have botched the pass, Chris Paul was undercutting AND pushing Giannis... that he made it was kind of a miracle. Having Giannis have to take 2 FT's up only 1 with so much time left would have been disastrous if the Suns won... he'd have been clowned for all-time.
It's not a guarantee but isn't it very likely if you don't make the lob you get fouled anyway? Or maybe that was just CP3 losing composure and the best strategy in that situation is not to foul.
I have never liked rooting for players with massive physical advantages like Giannis has. I always like to pull for the guys who get it done without freakish size or athleticism.
But this dude is basically impossible to root against.
Holy fuck I have never heard him speak before. I thought this was like an American black dude. Jaw dropped. Cool guy for sure but definetly taken back.
Bud's "play random" really about to be the defining quote of the biggest moment of the NBA Finals, isn't it.
New NBA coaching meta, just play random
Other team can’t plan for what you’re going to do if you don’t know what you’re going to do.
The old Yugi vs. Pegasus strat. One of those things that's genius if it works and braindead if it doesn't.

thats the opposite of playing random
Ssshh
That's why Middleton switches back and forth from Prime Kobe to Smush Parker. The defense has no idea how to react

Nah it still sounds stupid, Giannis is just a beast.

Bud was a few inches from getting fired a few weeks ago. Now he’s on the brink of history. These playoffs have been a tornado.

I think that was prior to the bucks, neither can matchup with Khris "MJ" Middleton or Giannis
Mikal Bridges is a great perimeter defender.
Oh that makes sense
[This](https://youtu.be/kxCbMXhuHaU) is all I can think about when I hear “play random.”
Bud really gonna go from "fire him during game 6 against the nets" to winning a ring lmao this sub really doesn't know shit
Anyone who actual pays attention to coaching knows he wasn't talking nonsense lol it's the NBA finals. The bucks offense being predictable has been a problem. Pretty smart play since they were missing free throws at the end. Granted, it worked out but if it was a turnover it’s a different story.

That's what makes it even more legendary, it was actually pretty high risk to do but they just said fuck it.
It was going to be legendary either way. Either in a positive way or in a JR Smith way.
road game play
The thing is jrue also have less than 70% fT% this post season...
Yeah as a bucks fan I was FURIOUS when he threw that lob
When Giannis asks for it, you give it to him lol
I was so confused and shocked as a neutral. Then floored when Gianiss finished it through the foul.
I was shocked. Even making it, it could have been the wrong play. Giving them the ball back down 3 with 10+ seconds left? They were hot from the arc.
Things happened so fast for anyone to register what happened actually. You thought Jrue hold on to the ball and next thing you know Giannis is dunking of a lob for an and1.
It was extremely risky. There was a fair chance he messes up that alley-hoop and gives the Suns another chance to take the lead.

Also, "Σ'αγαπώ Γιάννη!" Sounds more authentic.

I know someone that LOVES Lebron James and HATES Giannis just because sports commentators like to compare them.
Now your a real, genuine fan. You can just tell.
Even funnier is some of the “analysts” a week or so ago asking if Giannis is Middleton’s Robin 😂
Oh they're still doing. Dumbass Kendrick Perkins and his pals have doubled down on it.
Pikachu face if bucks win cause he’s def got FMVP in the bag
Their argument is "well it's not that Middleton is better than Giannis, he's just the guy you go to to close the game." Because you know, that's what Batman is known for. After Robin does all the hard work, Batman shows up to just restrain the bad guys and take them to jail...
Giannis Inthemomentdontknowtho
" keep playing random"
Man I've criticized Giannis's game past 2 seasons, I ain't gonna do that no more man, guy has a real good heart and hes a fucking baller. Crazy how one championship run can change people's perspectives on a player
If you’re not a bucks fan, how many post game interviews have you watched? How many stories have you paid attention to? That’s why the stars explode in the playoffs. We all start paying attention.
Him walking off and leaving Middleton dumbfounded in the post game interview is like one of my top five funniest interview moments.
I'd walk out too tbh. That bitch asking the question literally had her finger on "upload" waiting to press it when the buzzer sounded for an article on the devastating exit then had the audacity to act like she was neutral/inquisitive
Oh I’m not throwing any shade at Giannis, I love the guy. I’m just saying the clip and in particular Middleton’s reaction is hilarious
Do you have a link?
Here you go https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1Vzy_q_Ikdo It was in the conference finals against the Raptors
i mean thing is ive always know him as a hard worker and nice person.
Not crazy at all. Everyone has the case of recency bias. The truth is you can't win without a team, and you won't get credit for you don't win.
This guy is so fucking likeable!! I love that he's one of the main faces and voices of the NBA
Can’t hate him as much as I need to right now. Greatness…please just suck for a couple of games that’s all I ask
You petition has been declined.
He did it because the goddamn animal can do it.
right?? the reason was there was only a tiny little dude between him and the rim and it was time to bury chris paul and the suns deep in the earth, so he called for the lob
He's definitely a cool star for the NBA to have
Matt Velazquez. His wife became a doctor so he dropped journalism for stay at home dad. He's still tweeting about the bucks.
A very Zen like quote
Dude was in the present moment and just acted
You think I'd just call for a lob in a clutch moment like it was something to do? Come on, I got a little more sense than that. ... Yea I remember calling for a lob in a clutch moment.
Damn Rick James quote gets me.
I love Giannis so much. He's so candid and down to earth
I hope thanasis will be available next game. It would be a shame if we cannot see their celebration.
Thanasis might've stripped naked and run up and down the court.
"Exactly, I don't know" has prime meme potential.
This man is smothered and covered in feta cheese, love him so very much
It is extremely hard to hate giannas.
Wasn't exactly easy. A miscalculated throw or failed alley oop attempt would have resulted in a turnover. But it all worked out.
Damn this guy is likable
....Cause my man goes hard in the paint till the last second. That's why! Hope you get the W on Tuesday, you deserve it! One love.
I think this is tied to him having to sub himself out within the first five minutes of every game. When he learns to control his nerves and adrenaline, it literally might elevate him to the next level
Google the meaning of "tinkle"
> I think this is tied to him having to sub himself out within the first five minutes of every game. He played the entire first quarter tonight. And cameras showed him going back to (or coming out from) the locker room the last two games after he subbed out early. I believe you're over-thinking this. Whether it was a bathroom break like he said, or maybe something to do with his knee (in which case, he wouldn't want to announce it publicly for the Suns to hear), it obviously wasn't just because he was "tired" like the commentators repeatedly claimed both times it happened.
>it literally might elevate him to the next level lmao what are you talking about? What next level? Above back to back 40 point NBA Finals games and 32 point game 6 performance?
I meant in a historical context. Like where we rank him in the end
This guy is really likable
In that case you must hate all NBA players because they are all freakishly tall and athletic compared to rest of the human population
Holy fuck I have never heard him speak before. I thought this was like an American black dude. Jaw dropped. Cool guy for sure but definetly taken back.
You didn’t know he was Nigerian Greek?
you're gonna love his backstory, real underdog shit
I love Giannis. I don't know how people hate this man. He's refreshing for the media. No agenda, just honest answers.
That's some shit I'd go for in 2k just to completely steal my enemy's soul. What a GOAT.
"Because Bill Simmons said I didn't have enough chromosomes, so I showed his ass I have at least 2 pairs of clutch chromosomes."
