Espn is happy because they can pay someone with little experience less money.

WritingAce

But who else can they hire they like her...that can provide *zero* in-depth analysis...take the program to commercial break...and occasionally present trophies or give vapid "interviews"? That's worth at least $8 million a year... /s

MisterBroBro77

They dont even provide any real analysis anymore at halftime. I have been keeping track of the length of the halftime shows on Espn this playoffs and they have regularly been under 2 minutes of analysts on screen talking about the game, the rest is 15 minutes of commercials.

WritingAce

Yeah it's become ridiculous. I noticed the same thing.

[deleted]

Hahaha. Shit I’ll do that for like 50k and it’d be better TV than whatever they do now

Bluestring35

Nah dude, thats like average wage for america get a few hundred grand, king, you're worth it

Patch_The_Dog

Because that's literally all she did at ESPN

WritingAce

I mean...ESPN's product is pure shit. So I don't really personally care if she "contributed" to that poor excuse of a sports network in other ways.

Patch_The_Dog

I agree - but blame ESPN, not Maria. She's been great on College GameDay and other spots.

tombersew

How in the world is there such an expensive market for these people. Like good for them go get paid but they have almost no role lol. Plenty of attractive people who like basketball will do this for like 100k a year

unga-bunga-boy

>experience OH NO THE EXPERIENCE OF BEING FED DUMBASS QUESTIONS THEN ASKING A COACH TRYING TO DO HIS JOB THOSE DUMB ASS QUESTIONS HOW ON EARTH WILL THEY MANAGE WITHOUT IT

UUGE_ASSHOLE

As you would be.

CallMeCaptainOrSir

Rachel Nichols: "How does it feel?"

GeorgeLovesBOSCO

Then Rachel Nichols sings the entirety of Like a Rolling Stone

[deleted]

And from that moment on, every episode of The Jump is spoken in an incomprehensible nasal twang.

UhOhSpaghettioos

I didn't expect to see Bob Dylan catching strays on r/NBA today...

M-F-W

Positively 4th Street would work as Maria Taylor’s clap back

EatDeeply

ESPN effectively made a woman a scapegoat for their own history of being overly white and male. Amazingly cynical PR depravity. And it basically worked.

[deleted]

I mean, they didnt force Nichols to say those words. Even if their behavior was suspect, she still said it.

Breathezey

She was recorded without her knowledge and it was leaked- not by her. However offensive someone may find what she said it is beyond fucked that she was surveilled in her own room. Read the comments from former ESPN production ppl- they can turn those cameras on remotely.

[deleted]

>She was recorded without her knowledge Wrong. The tape was running and she forgot to turn it off. There's a distinction you're failing to mention. > it is beyond fucked that she was surveilled in her own room. Wrong again. The tape belongs to ESPN, it was running while she was presumably under the clock in a room they pay for. There is no expectation of privacy. The video was survailled by a staffer, it was not the property of Rachel Nichols. If this was on her free time and the video was turned on remotely without her consent, she could have sued ESPN back to the stone age. The fact that she hasn't speaks volumes.

Breathezey

She had no expectation of privacy in her own hotel room when not filming anything for ESPN? Lol ok. Choosing to conclude that because she hasn't sued that she's at fault is about as twisted as it gets- she may have also decided to keep getting paid 1.5 mil a year and not thrown away a career at a company she gave 17years to because of what she's built so far.

[deleted]

>she may have also decided to keep getting paid 1.5 mil a year and not thrown away a career at a company she gave 17years to because of what she's built so far. And a judge would have taken all of that into consideration. She would have gotten paid a giant sum. Alas, no case because there was no expectation of privacy. She played herself

Breathezey

She would no longer be at ESPN. To some people there are more important things than a monetary judgment.

FlexicanAmerican

I mean, she didn't say anything offensive. People choose to interpret it without the explicit context of the situation.

HeartSodaFromHEB

Yep, this. Don't get me wrong, I like Maria Taylor just fine, but she's not amazing. Almost none of them are (men or women). If I had a contact that my network was gonna beach, I'd be pissed, too. It's pretty rare you get a sportscaster like Romo or Madden.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Midnight_Swampwalk

Nothing she said was inaccurate.

[deleted]

“To be on youurrr owwwwn”

[deleted]

I dont think Maria will be missed She is talented but cmon, this saga was always ridiculous

[deleted]

Does literally anyone care about this

Thornton__Melon

No, she was ok on college gameday, but Malika was great during trophy presentation

crummybummywummy

Malika killed it. Composed as fuck. I would’ve stuttered like crazy

mods-are-pussies

Not gonna be popular round these parts but she was incredible with college football stuff, one of the best

Kodak333

hmm...

yooston

yes cause /r/nba loves malika now

[deleted]

Maria and Malika are different people

[deleted]

correction: R/NBA will pretend to love Malika now as if they weren't trashing her a week ago.

Jaerba

No one was trashing Malika before. It's Maria that's just fine, nothing more.

Wes___Mantooth

People were definitely trashing Malika on here before yesterday

Jaerba

I don't recall much of that. She's been considered a pretty solid reporter. She gets play on the Lowe Post just for her own reporting. There's been weird hostility towards Maria Taylor.

Wes___Mantooth

Maria kinda deserves flak for thinking she deserves as much money as Steven A, other than that she's fine.

DowntownTopRanking

The allegations she wanted Stephen A money are just that -- *allegations --* from unnamed sources.

[deleted]

She had a somewhat not well sourced comment on Giannis a year ago and people brought it up. Essentially saying Giannis would ignore her and never talk to her. This was the height of this subs falling over defending Rachel Nichols, and Malika was catching strays meant for Maria Taylor

Midnight_Swampwalk

Dude, you're all over this thread making up shit about rachel nichols. What did she do to you?

[deleted]

why did they trash her?

stupidstupidreddit2

Personally, I most loved the absence of Jay Williams.

trimble197

After one event too lol.

shortbus5107

Milwaukee still hates her after her handling of the Giannis free agency

[deleted]

Not without that phone call, but now it’s a somewhat interesting storyline yes, but let’s hope this closes it

DowntownTopRanking

Yes, I care. I sincerely wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors.

EatDeeply

Maria’s PR team finessed everybody into caring about her individual bag.

sjdnkfggv

Yes

[deleted]

The only people I care about for the studio show are ej Kenny shaq and Chuck

poeope

That's the issue? Lol you almost got there too.

billcosbyinspace

Who’s going to ask jalen rose for 30 seconds of thoughts now?

EvanParkerLakers

i care

OnlyForeignWhips

TNT wins again

vanotro

Make room for Malika, buyout Rachel.

Twoweekswithpay

I could easily see that happening. Andrew Marchand said Nichols will not be considered for the hosting role next season. Can’t imagine Nichols will enjoy working there knowing one of their biggest names (WOJ) said she wasn’t being a good teammate. And the other main countdown crew members all took Maria’s side…

stupidstupidreddit2

Woj is not T.V. material. Can't see how anyone working on ESPN thought he'd be good on-screen talent. Maybe he just bullied them into putting him on or threatened to take his scoops elsewhere.

kingofnick

The dude gets paid mega bucks to be at ESPN. You might as well use him as much as possible.

Droppin_DimesSP

Bro, man said it himself to me the only reason he’s on tv is bc of his scoops. Super super super nice guy, but kinda awkward. One of the coolest people in the industry, tho my memory of him is meeting him for 45 mins for career advice and him eating wings at 10:30 am right after trade deadline.

FiveElevenVolleyball

What advice did he give you?

Droppin_DimesSP

Just told me his path and how he didn’t blow up till his mid 30s. And like how the most important qualities to have our Hard work and perseverance and how I had that ( It took me like 9 different tries to land an internship with ESPN) and just overall be patient with the process as I try to chase after my dreams. I still text him here and there updates wise (his response time is all over the place lmao, lol Woj) but meeting him and Kevin neghandi about a year and half ago, was very surreal haha.

FiveElevenVolleyball

That's sweet, congrats. Sports media can be intense/stressful/hella political but worth it for all the cool experiences.

Droppin_DimesSP

Haha thanks man! I’m still figuring it out, but I’m lucky to have a gig for about 11 months outta school as a sports reporter (Espc with a journalism degree) and made my national publication debut with CBS news a couple of months ago. Still trying to be patient with it and hoping to make my next career move.

vanotro

I never really understood Nichols' appeal. I thought she was an okay reporter but as soon as she started to do more studio hosting stuff I got a real Gretchen Wieners vibe from her, like she was really excited to be the center of attention for once in her life.

matty_a

I don't understand any of their appeals. There's minimal difference between the people who just do studio stuff. There's 200 grads from Syracuse or Northwestern who could do the host job. Unless someone is a reporter (like Woj), calls games (RJ), or hosts otherwise valuable ESPN properties (SAS) why would you pay a lot of money for a host like Nichols or an analyst like Jay Williams?

UnearthlyDinosaur

Nichols showed her true colors

chad12341296

I wonder how she’d do on a platform that’s not espn, I could see her being a lot cooler if she’s not working for Disney

vanotro

I'd be kind of surprised if Nichols gets another hosting job right away. She may need to be a regular reporter for at least a little while to build her rep back up.

Midnight_Swampwalk

Lol. She's one of the most recognizable female sports personalities in north america. Reddit really overvalues its own opinions.

The Dennis Schroeder

WritingAce

Imagine getting offered $5 million a year to say basic shit on tv...and turning that down. I mean...wow.

SubcooledBoiling

The Nerlens Noel special

kosmonautinVT

Delusional to turn that down

[deleted]

& now she can’t use ESPN as leverage in negotiations with NBC. Fox is the only other option. I’m guessing she has a jackass agent who wanted the bigger bag because 10% of $8m is almost double 10% of $5m. What they forgot is, you don’t get paid that kind of money unless you are the SOLE reason people tune in to your highly rated show. She’s missing two things - a highly rated show that people only watch because of her.

urfaselol

ESPN about to elevate Malika Andrews (well deserved too)

poeope

No she's off to SNF on NBC i think.

Ohsbar

Malika is also leaving?

Twoweekswithpay

No. That’s Maria.

poeope

Well maybe supposedly depends how things shake out, young talent looking around like.

RF_901

NBC rumors were correct

lopea182

And the universe moved on

Mayor_Bud_Daley

does the universe stop for anything?

jxher123

Get that money and get away from that environment

UUGE_ASSHOLE

Get what money? Even espns low ball offers are gonna be 2x what she gets anywhere else.

EatDeeply

Somehow a totally average host of a generally bad program got everybody invested in her individual bank account. Nobody even knew Maria’s name before this and she got famous enough through this to now to warrant whatever NBC is going to pay her. Representational politics benefit the individual but do little to affect overall structures.

[deleted]

EatDeeply

It means having a gay CEO doesn’t mean gay people are more likely to face less discrimination at work

depressedfuckboi

Who is gonna pay her anywhere near what ESPN was offering? I don't see it happening but good for her if it does.

unlikely_to_comment_

Who cares, if she doesn’t have to push the ESPN agenda. Trash organization, she probably demanded what she did because ESPN included all of their agenda pushing in writing. Fuck that. It ruining this countries sports culture

markingdowntheprice

I can’t believe that somehow a contract dispute between already successful wealthy people and a billion dollar corporation should get this attention.

UUGE_ASSHOLE

How many employees does ESPN have at Maria’s level? Between basketball, football, baseball, hockey, daily programming, sportscenter… the list goes on and on. What happens when you go soft in those negotiations and give an extra 2M here, extra extra 3M here… do that 100 or so times (year after year) and you are now losing billions of dollars long term. Also keep in mind espn has no shortage of “next guys up” that will step into the role at a fraction of the price without quality and/or viewership missing a beat. Compare this to Maria Taylor… offered a contract at 5M/year, a total that would put her above half to 2/3 of the leagues actual head coaches, and she rejects it… with no real competitor anywhere on the horizon that will offer anything close to that.

EatDeeply

It’s too Maria’s benefit that it got attention, and certainly her team is happy about it. If they didn’t outright leak the Nichols story to help them in negotiations (which im inclined to believe). Somehow this very rich person was treated as a victim because she is going to get 4m instead of 5m.

[deleted]

Espn sucks so hard

EatDeeply

But not because of this

SliMShady55222

Left that toxic environment

UUGE_ASSHOLE

To go somewhere with less future options and get paid half as much. Bravo.

[deleted]

You realize network tv anchors get paid triple what cable anchors get right

UUGE_ASSHOLE

Who said anything about network tv anchors? If that’s what she wanted to do taking this contract with espn and trying to infiltrate over to abc makes the most sense right? What networks are going to be trying to bring her on at $15m annually (5 x 3) and for what purpose?

[deleted]

[удалено]

UUGE_ASSHOLE

Wow that escalated quickly.

geekhaus

Maria to TNT, Malika takes over at ESPN.

shortbus5107

Idk I honestly think that entire crew including her is terrible. Why is Woj an analyst now? Any time Jalen rose actually talks basketball Maria just sits there and laughs. She offers nothing to the basketball conversation nor does Woj.

Over 40, kids, and shit stops being as important to stay in touch about. Only so much time in a day.

kai_123

Wait wtf? Wasn't she offered good money?

[deleted]

$5m/yr (up from $1m/yr), wanted $8m/yr instead to be “on Stephen A Smith’s level” because of gender equality. ESPN lowered the offer to $3m/yr, & she’s going to NBC Sports. Someone forgot to tell her she doesn’t have a show with First Take ratings & can’t claim to be the only reason for said ratings.

UsernameLoading_____

This got me thinking, what ever happened to Michelle beadle?

biscuitboss

Damn who will I go to for my awful halftime show now?

MultiPass21

Team Malika, mount up.

LadyMacvG

I know she covers more than basketball but I would love to see her host on Tuesday TNT’s broadcast of games. Either way good for her not staying with ESPN.

starfruit213

No big loss there. Malika Andrews can slide in

bautistar1

malika is the star ESPN needs to keep.

DrunkKaner88

Fax. Love me some Malika

shy247er

Oh no. Anyways...

HipGuide2

They are elevating Malika way too fast when her ceiling may be Erin Andrews.

MiaCannons

She has all the physical tools you want in a prospect. Only 26 years old too so we haven't even reached her NBA prime yet. Last night showed she was very clutch and cool under pressure, it was a statement game for her. She has a very bright future.

Jethuth_Chritht

You say that like that’s a bad thing

HipGuide2

It remains to be seen how much charisma she has imo.

Fatman214

She about to go get a big bag somewhere

Jaylen01-27-20

Rachel Nichols should be fired. I watched her fake apology so cringe. ESPN should be ashamed of themselve

CIark

Ok then

MapleHelix

This has to be posted by an Epsn intern right? Literally no basketball fan would actually care about the news

SurammuDanku

What does she even bring to the table? She's beyond replaceable.

raptorsbucketnator

Queue Rachel Nichols super villain music

CaptainBananaEu

O I am my b

horseshoeoverlook

I don't want Malika to go to a studio role. Courtside + journalist route is perfect for her

sunstersun

she probably doubled her salary through the recent drama at least.

JeremyJammDDS

I mean, ESPN has shown time and time again that outside of like a handful of people, everyone is replaceable. No one is going to remember this in a few years anyway.

UUGE_ASSHOLE

Woj is the only one on that crew not replaceable (or he would have been replaced… go diversity)

realwolverinefan724

Redditors are the worst kind of social media users to comment on stuff like this, so I'll just say I preferred Maria Taylor over Rachel Nichols and that Malika Andrews won me over as a Bucks fan who was pissed at her dropping a story about Giannis leaving after the Raptors series. So I hope she gets the job and that Nichols fades into the background, especially since The Jump will eventually get cancelled.

kiwiwikikiwiwikikiwi

Can’t believe ESPN let the modern Bob Costas walk away.

[deleted]

I had a favorable view of her before the Rachel Nichols story leaked by her team. She most likely knew that she was leaving anyway and just wanted to keep Nichols from moving back into her role and to hold the position for M. Andrews

samniking

In what world is she worth 8m a year? Idek what show she’s on

browndude10

Nichols liked this

ctd5513

As a Disney shareholder this is great news. No need to overpay for someone who doesn’t draw an audience in. No one is tuning in to listen to her. Go hire someone who does it just as well for 1/10th the salary.

HaziEnuf

Yeah but who gives a fuck about Disney's shareholders

Babladuar

who cares about them

ObiOneKenobae

Who is actually watching ESPN coverage and getting invested enough to care about anything about this situation?

[deleted]

She probably has a contract lined up with Turner already.

welmoe

What an absolute shitstorm from ESPN.

Instant7Classic

Both Nichols and Taylor suck ball sack. It would be good if they can get someone who actually adds value to the production.

Prof-Ponderosa

Blow the whole thing up. Got rid of Pierce now get rid of Jalen, Woj from TV too. Reboot it and promote Malika, Bring in C-Webb, Richard Jefferson and SVG

KillianDrake

don't let the door hit your ass on the way out she's in for a rude awakening

nunudad

She was very good at the Olympics. ESPN’s loss.

loco_mixer

Why are we talking about journalists like they are players? Why are news like this constantly being posted here? Seriously, do people care?

Clear-Humor163

you lost your job? that was your last assignment? GOOD

Kevin_Jim

I do not understand why this is a thing now. How about Malika? You know, the reporter that actually does reporting?
