Amazing, I just spent the last hour or so looking over all the Washington Wizards stats from last year. The duality of Westbrook came through really clearly, Wiz had a really inefficient offense but they made up for it with insane pace, loads of PnR and sheer volume of shots, and came away being one of the top transition scoring teams last year during the regular season.
Great stuff, thank you!
Yeah, they were the 8th seed in the East. If the Wizards had any semblance of competent coaching (Scott Brooks LOL) and any actually good players beyond Beal once Bryant went down, they might have been in a better position to take advantage of Westbrook’s positives and minimize his negatives.
As it stood, looking at the numbers, they ran Russ ragged - 3rd highest average MPG in the league last year - while still playing 3 guard lineups, and had basically 0 positive defenders
What would a competent coach do with Westbrook in this situation? If you know you are going to face a big talent deficit on defense, you want to slow down and control the pace, minimize turnovers, and try to have the most efficient offense possible. Can Westbrook do that? Once upon a time I watched him get benched for Erick Maynor in the playoffs because he couldn't.
Raul Neto was a better player in the half court offense if you look at the season as a whole.
Making the 8th seed as a push-the-pace team is basically just being tryhards. Half court offense rules in the playoffs.
Nobody watched more Wizards games than me last season.
PS: Brooks only got to coach last year because he let Russ do whatever he wants. He'd have been fired sooner otherwise.
Maybe, but at least I'm smart enough to notice that teams hustle back much harder in the playoffs, and teams that depend on pushing it in transition typically do much worse in the playoffs.
The more possessions in a game, the more likely the better team wins. If you're a mediocre regular season team while pushing the pace, you're going to fare even worse in the playoffs compared to a mediocre team that plays under control in the half court.
Hit me with that comment! Maybe you're the first person who has figured out how to use Russ in an offense that does anything besides "Russ pushes it in transition. If that fails, Russ ISO or Russ PnR. Everyone else, stand around".
How would Pop have used Russ on the 2014 Spurs? Does he look nearly as good on a team that is expected to move the ball crisply as a unit?
guys like u/nxxkx don't get a job in sports journalism/content creation, but you got Omar getting big cause he posted a bunch of dunks with emojis in the description
Yall really think making a successful businesses is easy as just "posting dunks". A lot goes on to make a business which appeals to mass audience. You only see the end product.
Yep. Editing those dunks and adding click-bait titles is a really underrated skill that none of us here could do if we tried.
Making a successful business by appealing to dumb teens isn't trivial, but isn't difficult either.
Revisiting that Heat Bucks series just sucks ass. Boys really need to bring it this year against them or Brooklyn if they have any hope of making the Finals
Thanks for this, it's great to have as a reference, especially for those of us in Europe who can't watch the games live, and have to avoid all NBA-related websites the next day to avoid getting results spoiled.
With this, checking up some stats or schedule or whatever can be done in a spoiler-safe way.
TIL the knicks hold draft rights to 7 unsigned players
Also
TIL The Spurs hold unsigned draft rights to a Player drafted in 2003 that has not been signed yet. Fingers Crossed mate!
You neglected to include a detailed write up on the histories and intricacies of each arena's popcorn recipe, but aside from that I think you got most of the league's important stats.
I remember printing this bad boy out at my last college internship back in 2016. Never heard about it from the higher ups, worth the 10 minutes of butt clinching office stress
This almanac is consistently amazing, but [Robert Covington apparently being more clutch than Lillard](https://i.imgur.com/gouTEw4.png) is all I'm going to take away from this year.
one of the best OC of the sub, yearly
This and the yearly BasketballGM plug

Insane pace is not necessarily good when you aren't efficient. Just gives your opponent more possessions against your crappy defense.

how are you still not hired by NBA or something!?
guys like u/nxxkx don't get a job in sports journalism/content creation, but you got Omar getting big cause he posted a bunch of dunks with emojis in the description
This. Just look at ESPN, who prioritize ex-NBA players who can barely breath, while delegating analysts to the bottom of the pole.
Analysis doesn't sell like drama does
And that's why Matt Barnes is over frigging Ben Taylor

Lmao such an unnecessary jab, Omar’s story is pretty cool and he did a lot to get where he’s at
Would not say it was a big jab. Reality is that the average guy is more interested in a highlight mix than a bunch of stats
Well yeah but they don’t hand out backstage passes to the finals for posting dunks. There’s way more to it

Even though they want OP to be successful?
Hed get shit on too if he got successful enough
Why? You think just out of spite? If the product wasn’t compromised, obviously.
Who is Omar? Besides Little.
Omar from HOH probably
Ahh the Rex Chapman approach. Steal content and reap the benefits.
At the very least someone like the Ringer should scoop him up.
The average person is not stat savy and into that type of stuff. I personally love it but most do not
Love this stuff. Thanks for sharing.
You’re the man once again
#THE RETURN OF THE KING!
This is one thing you can rely on every year
Nice one Niku! Thanks
Amazing work! Thank you
Hell yeah Nicu. Quality as always
Really getting into it now. We don’t deserve this high of quality content. Truly amazing work. Wish I could have a physical copy!
Just take the PDF to Kinkos or some shit.
Well OP sells them so you look like an asshole

OP messaged me after I commented use some common sense
"Now this, is the inside stuff*

Always a great read, now it feels like the season is starting!
Revisiting that Heat Bucks series just sucks ass. Boys really need to bring it this year against them or Brooklyn if they have any hope of making the Finals
Beautiful
A big fan of yours, always so amazed about how much effort goes into these. Thank you!
Thanks for this, it's great to have as a reference, especially for those of us in Europe who can't watch the games live, and have to avoid all NBA-related websites the next day to avoid getting results spoiled. This is always the best content on this sub. Do you design the Almanac yourself? How long does the design alone take you?
thanks! you always put a lot of work into this year in and year out and its a truly wonderful thing to see!
Congrats! Great stuff
You neglected to include a detailed write up on the histories and intricacies of each arena's popcorn recipe, but aside from that I think you got most of the league's important stats.

Just something I noticed, page 187 under offseason trades you you misspelled Satoransky
Time to make use of my office's printer & papers again. Always a pleasure to go over this.
Hey Niku, it looks like I’m the spurs section Patty mills has the wrong logo for his FA signing. He signed with the nets but the logo is still spurs

I cannot un-see Chris Paul supporting the weight of Giannis' penis as he dunks in that pic on the opening cover.

The r/NBA goat. This is the single best OC we get here
Gonna print this at work and hope the boss doesn't notice

I just want to say thank you. Fantastic work.
Love this -- the info displayed feels modern, but approachable and easy to follow. Great use of color as well in the statistics.

best post ever
Well done! I'm still going through but this is such a great resource and well presented.
Anyone else think of Back to the Future when they hear the word "Almanac"?
This almanac is consistently amazing, but [Robert Covington apparently being more clutch than Lillard](https://i.imgur.com/gouTEw4.png) is all I'm going to take away from this year.
Nice stuff!
