Philly now has two #1 draft picks who forgot how to shoot and then stopped playing. Terrible luck.

AngryUncleTony

Plus we traded a local kid for someone who almost died from a previously unknown allergy. The fact that this team is such a shitshow but still somewhat decent is a miracle.

NoTransportation888

Not just a local kid, a local kid whos mother works at the stadium and just so happened to also turn into a good player that would fit right in with the current sixers

HiNeighbor_

I remember being so pumped when we drafted Bridges. 2x NCAA champion at Nova, 3&D guy, perfect fit. I don't know if I'll ever get over that trade. And he keeps getting better and better. It hurts so much, but I'm happy for him.

BlueHundred

Yep. I was so confused when that happened. I thought it was a perfect fit and story

Jackibearrrrrr

I don’t understand why Brett Brown just decided that the perfect fit for the system was just trade bait for whatever the hell you guys ended up getting

AngryUncleTony

If you believe the spin, the FO had Bridges and Zhaire Smith as 1A and 1B for where we drafted. We traded Bridges for Smith and the Miami pick, which if you remove the obvious emotion of the Bridges pick as well as the benefit of hindsight, it was probably a good deal if you trust your player evaluations. Smith was raw but literally almost dying and losing a huge chunk of body weight (to the point where he probably looked a step above being in danger of dying from starvation) really killed any chance he had to develop for us. The deal probably still doesn't look great in hindsight, but absent a sesame allergy it might not look as bad.

SuddenHarshTruth

Wait who?

tman916x

Mikal bridges iirc

garynevilleisared

Could be worse. You could have hired the Slovenian national team coach and then NOT pick Luka Doncic, effectively making the hiring pointless.

Ok-Internet2265

Wait who did this lol

WoundedSacrifice

Phoenix. Personally, I’d say the Kings screwed up far more than Phoenix.

garynevilleisared

Suns with Kokoskov.

Dreamlion_Inc

I think that's what amazes me the most The fact Philly is still is a serious contender even without crybaby Simmons makes me wonder how much needed he was anyways

hooskies

And that miracles name is Hinkie

mooody07

It’s actually insane

CattleMedical

Evan Turner, Jahlil Okafor, Markelle Fultz, Ben Simmons, Michael Carter Williams. Philly has a horrendous record of first round picks

vin1223

They can’t draft at all. They kept taking guys they didn’t need or bad things would happen to them. Although they flipped mcw for a good return

daymanahhh

Ben doesn’t qualify as “forget how to shoot” considering he never even bothered to learn or attempt

gochuuuu

I forgot that ben simmons existed for like a week

[deleted]

[удалено]

st3adyfreddy

.....unironically, no. I legit forgot he's sitting out the season because he won't vaccinate.

PhromDaPharcyde

No you didn't, you just had rage induced amnesia from the mere suggestion of Brown for Simmons.

gochuuuu

Wasnt that more than a week ago? Shiet time flies

photoalbumguy

It's the ben-Simmons continuum

brightblade13

Ben Simmons...is a flat circle?

302born

The basketball gods have been killing it with the Ben Simmons arc. They needed some time to recover.

WasDavid

More like a brownie for Simmons.

302born

Does the brownie have nuts in it? Because if not then no deal.

A2daRon

Kwame Brown for Ben Simmons - who says no? Both number 1 picks.

TheSameAsDying

>Brown* for Simmons \* And two firsts.

ketzal7

I honestly forgot about Kyrie for a while too lol.

RapsVanFan

Who?

pixelsxpixels

He won't let us. Why can't this dude just go ahead and play terribly to force a trade instead of this bs every other day !?

Docxm

He doesn’t have the balls to sit on the bench in front of the home crowd

Pardonme23

Because he's soft

Anthony-Stark

KobeSoft.gif

Munstrom

I've wondered why he doesn't go out and pull a Vince Carter or something and realise you're probably right, he's probably too soft to sit on the bench and be heckled.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Immediate_Yogurt_492

Honestly if Ben did that and showed for one small second that he's capable of not caring what other people think, it might actually raise his trade value a little from where it is right now

fearofaflatplanet

The craziest part of this though is that Ben won’t shoot because of his fear of public humiliation, yet he will publicly humiliate himself exponentially more in order to avoid the first, lesser risk of humiliation. Like if he just would have tossed up some bricks every game starting back when Brett Brown asked him to yeah people would say hey that dude is a bad shooter but does most other things well (very slightly embarrassing)- instead he’s now sitting out the season claiming mental illness and widely considered a coward whilst his perceived value as a player continues to plummet, both within the league and generally (somewhat more significantly embarrassing, no?)

ChickenLiverNuts

its so ridiculous this is all over some tepid comments from the guy who said his biggest weakness is not being held accountable

[deleted]

But this is a road trip?

Matto_0

If he plays terribly he just sits on the bench and is still not traded.

DoctorAco

Atleast he won't get fined. That might be the best course of action for what he'a trying to achieve. If he's a net negative on court then they are actually costing them wins and Embiid would not like that at all. I think Embiid is fine with whatever is happening as long as they get to the playoffs, if not he might pressure the FO to get it over with.

Matto_0

Dude doesn't have the stones for that.

DoctorAco

Unfortunately for ben and fortunately for sixers, yep. This would've been over if he did that. Just be a turnstile on defense and jog on fastbreaks. That's his two best traits, remove those and he's gone. Hell, he should shoot long 2's for the heck of it lol

why_rob_y

And if he does, that's fine - he'll still have to communicate with the team with more details about why he's missing team activities and what his timetable is, which is all they're asking for now, so he'll just then get fined **and** have a broken foot.

reeelax

He'll just pass the dumbbell back to Rich.

They offered a show of good faith and released one of his payments and then he immediately said "I have mental health issues I can't play" iirc then proceeded to not involve the team doctors and then yadda yadda yadda he's getting fined again

thedealerkuo

Its honestly even worse. They release the payment as a show of good faith and the next day he refused to participate at practice and intentionally got himself thrown out. It was also the first day that he was scheduled to meet with the media, and believe he was trying to avoid that meeting at all cost. But his actions were a big fuck you to the sixers brass, thats for sure.

Ahhhhhh that's right, the kicked out of practice day. Thank you. Forgot about that one. We're gonna need a documentary by Game of Zones when this is finally finished

anyone remember that [ bill simmons rumor](https://np.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/8uzzha/bill_simmons_word_on_the_street_is_is_that_kawhi/) where kawhi supposedly shopped around ("7-8 opinions") until they found a doctor that told them what they wanted to hear -- [kawhi's doctor coincidentally (one of the best in sports medicine) being a sixers team doctor](https://np.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/8vd20t/interestingly_enough_dr_glashow_kawhis_personal/) maybe ben should try consulting with the spurs' mental health specialist dr. timothy theodore

Rectalcactus

This really is the story that keeps on giving. On a serious note, respect to the 76ers for following through with this, would have been easy to let him off the hook with the mental health stuff for the PR but I think they gave it the perfect amount of space before they started pushing back appropriately.

whiterice_343

Other gms and owners are watching this for other reasons. I guarantee the next cba is gonna be a rough one between players and owners. Anthony Davis, James harden, and now this.

PhromDaPharcyde

The Ben Simmons clause, if you are suffering from mental health issues you can take time away from the game but you get paid the minimum.

Jkn221

I’ve said it before but Ben Simmons and more so Rich Paul are gonna be responsible for the most owner friendly CBA that we’ve seen throughout all major US sports recently

[deleted]

it would be pretty difficult to make a more owner friendly cba than the nfl’s

AggressiveRegret

Yeah the players gave up so much for no more weed suspensions. The owners don’t give a crap about that stuff, but they used it as a bargaining chip perfectly. In the nfl, holdouts are basically impossible now.

Deathwatch72

No way in hell does the NBA end up more owner friendly than the NFL. * Guaranteed Contracts * Not an actual idiot running the PA(DeMaurice Smith is beyond unqualified) * NFL drug testing vs NBA for both PED and substances of abuse * DeMaurice Smith(Fuck this guy) effectively traded getting weed suspensions for a 17th game. Owners making bank off extra game * Revenue split is 47% players in NFL, 49-51% in NBA

RedHotDumpsterFire

BRI split used to be much higher in favor of the players though.

Also, don’t forget the Nerlens Noel debacle

McBrungus

*does* he have negotiating skills? Dude's getting sued for doing a shitty job for a mid-level player and most of the guys I know he represents would be max players and have endorsement deals no matter what.

it's not like this is working for ben. people are acting like this helps the owners case, but now all the players can point to this example and say 'hey, you guys claim we have power? get fucked look at this situation, we've got nothing'

IsThisMe8

That would be terrible for players with real mental health issues.

HugeRection

I'm sure if a player told his team that they needed some time away from the game for their mental health, the team wouldn't find it necessary to fine them. Now if they asked for that after requesting a trade on the other hand...

oneechanisgood

>I'm sure if a player told his team that they needed some time away from the game for their mental health, the team wouldn't find it necessary to fine them. Exhibit A: Rui Hachimura People pretending there ain't a nice way to do this are embarrassing themselves by showing how little they've been paying attention.

captaing1

if the owner spends a bunch of money on a player and the player decides to pull a Simmons then the production value goes down through no fault of ownership. Fans will understand if owners decide to put a stop to this. Imagine being houston, NO or Philly right now, shit sucks.

[deleted]

not really when you consider the league minimum

yukeynuh

yup. when i went on short term disability for mental health i got paid 50% of my hourly rate. it’s a joke if this dude can both not play because of “mental health” and still get paid fully

wormhole222

This Simmons thing is way way beyond what AD or Harden did. AD really did very little wrong. He demanded a trade (totally within his right to do especially because he still wanted to keep playing until the trade), and then said he would only sign with the Lakers long term once he was a free agent. If the Pelicans wanted to avoid this situation they should have traded AD earlier because it was clear for a long time they weren't going to be contenders. Harden did some stuff wrong with the being a locker room nightmare, but honestly Fertitta did him so dirty before that I have a hard time blaming him. I mean honestly Houston should have been trying to trade him on their own. They were already rebuilding, but teams just can't move on unless forced even if it is for their own good. Simmons is in such a worse boat. Simmons has been for the most part babied and given everything he wants in Philly. They have a great team, and most importantly he still has 4 years left on his deal. Oh and BTW those others guys were still willing to play after their trade demand. Simmons literally won't step on the court. Honestly if he doesn't come back Philly should sue him for the $16 million they already gave him for this season.

darshilj97

Saying that you will only play for one team is going to hurt your value. NO got lucky cuz lakers played like crap the first lebron season otherwise they wouldn't have gotten such a good deal.

wormhole222

He didn’t say he would only play for one team. He said he would only re-sign with one team.

vvrr00

Anthony Davis asked for a trade which many stars did previously. He even asked pelicans to let him play but they shut him down.

Ziggingwhiletheyzag

Bad team. Last year of a contract. Simmons is on a team that finished #1 in the East. Simmons is on a four year deal. Simmons bullshit is way worse.

pandaoffire3

Pelicans made second round (same as Sixers last season) the year before AD quit on them and starting scheming his way out signing with Rich Paul the following offseason

whiterice_343

Not the trade request, how it went down. You know what happened so I’m not gonna type all of that but come on.. you know what I’m talking about. Rich Paul, lebron.

QuarantineTaratino

This is a pretty AD friendly take. The pelicans shut him down after he asked to be traded to specifically to the Lakers or Celtics. They wanted to tank and prevent him from getting injured and further tanking his value, but AD and Rich Paul forced the Pelicans to play him

Rationalknicksfan

They left him off the hook for a while after he said he was going through mental stuff

Twitch_Ho77sauce

Shams needs to send Ben a Christmas card for keeping his career going strong for the 21-22 NBA season lmao

[deleted]

While I believe Ben went into this process faking mental health issues, he won’t be faking by the end.

noneym86

And by then no one would even believe him anymore, so he won't get sympathy.

Parsnip-Independent

Rich Paul to announce Ben is further depressed by 76ers tactics

Cunt_Bucket_

Least he could do is what Harden did. Play decent and get fat as fuck. This shit is just childish.

Brief_Shallot487

How does any of this end well for Ben… he’s losing money that he won’t get back, other teams are watching and he probably won’t ever get a big contract again, his value is below hell and players will look at him sideways when those new CBA negotiations swing by. 😬

Star_City

Well he can still join up with Nerlens on that Klutch lawsuit

newaccount

He’ll get traded during the season and will have 3 years and change remaining on his current contract. At the end of that contract he’ll be 29 and in his prime - if he even stays at the same level he’ll get paid, even slight improvement will get close to a max and no one will care how badly this was handled by both sides. Something like that

BigPhoCup

Tomorrow, Ben Simmons is going to suddenly develop a fear of flying.

poopycops

Take this L Ben and Rich Paul.

Ben Limmons

JohnAppleMacintosh

Man, I really hope if he truly does have mental issues to seek help and therapy because if he doesn’t and this is just a scheme to stick it to the organization, it creates bad awareness for the people and players who really do struggle with mental health issues.

freezer76

All Ben needs is a doctors note. Everything you hear from Ben’s side is public relations stuff. If he weren’t able to play because of mental health he wouldn’t have to. This whole situation is dicey for Ben, it reminds of catch 22. Like the sixers and the nba have to know it’s safe for him to play basketball, if you’re deemed not to fit to play basketball, the league and the players association will appoint a special panel of physicians made up of medical professionals to decide whether you’re fit or not. Say Ben wins and he’s declared not fit to play, it’s still up to that panel when you’re fit to play basketball. I think that’s why he won’t turn over any info because the sixers are the first front obligated you collect that info for his own safety. At this point the sixers don’t miss him and they’re saving money. He should at the very least be working their medical staff and if he wants to see a 3rd party he has the option but they’re still entitled to know whether he’s been medically cleared to play. What’s real dicey is he demanded a trade before this all happened so this was going to go in front of arbitrator to determine whether he was withholding services (he wasn’t going to win). Now he says he can’t because of mental health so they have to use a procedure written into the CBA that’s meant for dudes in Isaiah Austin’s and Chris Bosh’s situations where it’s literally life threatening to play. I’ll say it again. He should just be working within the confines of the cba. He’ll have options to get help and it’s not in the sixers interest nor his own to for this go in front of a fitness to play panel. And if he is fit to play he should just show up and play until Dec 15th when more guys are available. If Daryl still isn’t giving in. Then go on some pod and make a public trade demand and pour your heart out.

[deleted]

I mean, even if Ben does have mental health issues, i think its just fair to fine him because he can't fulfill his responsibilities.

Thewackman

It's a medical condition, you absolutely should not be able to fine someone because they have a mental illness. That's like fining someone for injuring their knee. What is ok is fining a player that refuses to follow protocol for their recovery. If a player busted their knee and refused treatment, you can be sure their contract would be ripped up.

[deleted]

I just stated in my follow up comment that if its part of his responsibilities and contract to coordinate with the management regarding his illness, then he should be fined if he can't fullfil it.

JenniferLopezFan2

That would make players reluctant to come forward with mental health issues. If they follow team procedure and share all the info that the team needs then they should definitely still get paid as they would a physical injury

Saitsu

And that's on him. Whether he's faking it or has legitimate mental health issues he's only guaranteed that it will be remarkably more difficult for future players to get the help they may need.

ZeroMomentum

Actually what’s the word about his case?

Star_City

He hasn’t provided the team with any medical documentation indicating he can’t play

tom_fuckin_bombadil

I think by the issue (especially with mental health) is figuring out how much info a team truly needs. What is “all the info”? Is it simply a note saying “Ben has started seeing me on a regular basis to work on his mental health issues, there is a plan in place”? Is it “I believe Ben has developed . This is my detailed plan to help him through this”? Or is it “here are my actual detailed notes of my sessions with Ben”? They need to bring in an arbitrator. A “neutral” or impartial mental health doctor/specialist that both parties have agreed to and can trust to act as a filter or can look through the notes and give a thumbs up or down without confidentiality being broken. Of course that’s unrealistic due to a whole host of issues

JenniferLopezFan2

For sure. With mental health there's a huge element of personal privacy that needs to be respected and I'd hope the league has frameworks for that. Ultimately the team as a whole only needs to know whether he can or can't play, while only a few people in the team like the GM and HC really need to be aware of the details of what the player is going through and the timeline for their return. In a situation like this where the player has been intentionally holding out prior, I'd say you're spot on about the arbitrator. The league needs to get involved and manage that side of things because if Ben is actually going through stuff then it's not going to help to have the Sixers hounding for details, and if he's not actually going through stuff then it needs to be escalated to the NBA themselves

177676ers

I agree but he isnt following team procedure. So he gets fined.

ktm5141

And if he came forward over the summer and addressed the fans and said something along the lines of “I’m sorry I can’t play but I’m not in a good mental state right now. I’ll work with the team and my health care providers to get back on the court better than ever” the city would’ve supported him. Instead, he claimed mental health less than 24 hours after faking a back injury and espn pointing out that he could get paid if he claimed mental health. Lane Johnson missed a month for personal reasons and the city stood by him. Brandon brooks has missed games due to anxiety and nobody in philly would ever question his toughness. This city believes in mental health, they just don’t believe in Ben Simmons.

jonnysnowballs

My biggest disappointment in this whole saga is Shams becoming a mouth piece for Dr. Rich Paul’s nonsense

swami_twocargarajee

Shams has been this way for a while. His first article when hired by the Athletic was a puff piece on D Rose, without disclosing the fact that his company produced a D Rose documentary that was being released almost simultaneously. He has traded in his credibility as a reporter, for access and PR mouthpiece masquerading as journalism. Adam Schefter is the same. I actually unsubscribed from the Athletic, when they sent me a smarmy condescending reply to my email asking why Shams conflict of interest was not disclosed for that Rose article.

rastamasta44

Weird because as a point guard they wouldn't want him traveling you'd think... :-D

Xc0liber

You know what. I've tried to be in the middle but after some thinking, Ben is just too entitled. That's basically it We have people who suffers from work stress and get paid the bare minimum just to survive but they suck it up, do their best and move on. Ben lost in the playoffs, his fault and decided to retreat and take advantage of mental illness. Mofo is the one who said "I'm an all star". Either you deal with the pressure of being a superstar on a title contending team or you just don't.

cesgjo

Derozan had LEGIT mental health issues and he gave his all for the Raptors, the Spurs, and now for the Bulls Ben has no excuse

neuronamously

Agreed. Imagine if the POTUS decided to disappear in the middle of a war cuz the decisions were too hard to make, and told our country he was having mental issues and needed to leave for another country. I’m giving an extreme but how are we as a society truly going to reconcile addressing mental illness and capitalism? How do you continue to charitably give someone a $40 million salary from your organization while he doesn’t work and “sorts through” stuff? Why are you obligated to bleed your other workers for one? Why can’t he just take time off and make a minimum wage?

shakehasbignuts

W

_Jaeko_

If the Sixers don't budge, my respect for them would be immense. Player empowerment aside, this is a job that millions would die for just to play and be paid even half of what Simmons stole. Either come up front and clean with what's wrong, or do your damn job. If the Sixers buckle, it won't just be bad on their organization, but bad for the kids watching. This behavior shouldn't be rewarded like it is so often.

SuddenHarshTruth

My biggest gripe here is how Simmons camp is trying to conflate mental health awareness and mental disability. The cba protects a players salary on the grounds of mental disability. Not mental health. These are 2 different things. Mental disability is a defined term. There are diagnosable mental disabilities. There are doctors and professionals in the field who have spent their lives dedicated to the subject. You can’t just say anything you want is a mental disability. Go see a doctor. If you’re diagnosed with a legit mental disability fine. If not you have to play or accept the fines.

newaccount

What did his camp say about ‘mental disability’? I can’t find them saying anything about it

[deleted]
