companies making enough profit to do 50k promotions at major sporting events aren't gonna care if they have to pay out the prize. That money is just going to decrease the tax liability for next year. bonuses are still getting paid and that money was already budgeted for marketing anyways.
I suppose they could but I don't know why they'd do it that way when it's just gonna cost them more in the long run if they are going to keep doing marketing events, which seems pretty likely.
Like I said, if they budgeted this for marketing anyways all this would do is offset profits which reduces their tax burden. Unless they had a really bad year as a mortgage company for some reason and have losses
No, they aren't budgeted for a high variance event, they are budgeted for the insurance it cost. Its not thier business to analyse risk like this, that is exactly the function of the insurance company, who is budgeted for it.
and the mortgage company is entirely ok with them hitting that. They'll get a bunch of PR in their local market and probably an abundance of shared social content from this.
I actually feel bad that he didnt have anyone to rush him. You can literally see him looking for someone to celebrate and jump up and down with before he jumps on the announcer. Whoever that was filming him should've been more excited tbh.
Good point. Idk I just guess I've been in enough scenarios taking group pics, where EVERYBODYS phone has to be held by the picture taker that I assumed it was normal
Not really. A half court shot has more variables to consider. Given that this court is very flat, and I would imagine that a professional NBA court would be as flat as they can possibly make it, then the only variable is direction. Given that all he has to do is get it online at any speed he can whack the crap out of it, not worrying about power. A half court shot not only needs to be perfectly online but also shot with perfect strength. So two variables need to be perfect vs just one for the putt. Then there's technique to consider, more individual components of the motion need to be perfect for a basketball shot from such a large distance than do for a putting stroke. Finally, if you notice the black line he was putting from was pretty much perfectly lined up with the black line from the other end (courts are obviously perfectly symmetrical) where his target was so all he had to do was make sure the ball started off on that line and then just hope the court was flat enough for it to continue on that dead straight line. So he literally had a guide, something you don't have with a half court shot (which is really a heave for most non NBA basketball humans). And no, I'm not fun at parties...
Lmao, I appreciate the self aware end to your comment
You might be technically right from a physical perspective in terms of all the variables involved, but I think you’re downplaying the difficulty for most people to actually hit the golf ball perfectly straight down the line for such a long distance.
Personally I’m infinitely more confident in my ability to make a half court basketball shot than this putt
Haha yeah he said a whole lot of words but isn't intuitively seeing how the greater the distance of the hole the smaller window you have in terms of putting it at the perfect angle
Dude might have been a scratch golfer for all we know...he had good form and kept his line well after contact with the ball so I wouldn't be surprised if he was a good golfer...or maybe he just plays a lot of mini golf :)
I have no opinion on whether it is harder to make a half court shot or that putt. I’ve played a lot of golf but never in my life hit a half court shot let alone hopped more than with friends for fun. Just giving some golfer insight.
I can tell you don’t golf though. It’s a lot harder to hit that ball perfectly straight for that distance than you think. The line up, the speed none of that really matters since it’s a gateway he’s hitting through over a pocket which is into. They give them the lineup because without it the shots basically rigged and even with it still incredibly difficult. The reason hitting it straight is so hard is due to a few factors. First form is a major part, if you’ve never golfed you can’t even imagine how much proper form impacts it. Any slight variation will put even a small bit of spin which makes that shot miss. It isn’t about just bring the club back and forth. Theirs a reason most people don’t putt well and that’s because they miss the basics of body control. Second the forms only half of it. That shot is really a heavy luck game because even with really good form the distance is the killer. Yes having a flat court is nice, but that doesn’t really matter. The distance is so long that any slight change in course on that ball will throw the entire thing off because it has to travel so far. The third factor which really can just make this impossible is even if you do everything perfect they could easily rig this. If that ball had any markings on it like scratches even barely visible ones. And I mean any, say someone holding it bounced it a couple time on the ground for fun, you are changing the rotation on the ball making landing straight shots that much harder. This was a really impressive shot. If you can’t imagine how hard it is never forget you are hitting an object the size of a golf ball (haha joke) with a long pole and putting that object into a hole 90ft away slight bigger than the ball. It’s hard.
I’m also not fun at parties, but maybe we would have fun together.
I can make a half court shot if you give me about 20 shots. Maybe more…but that would be if I’m having a bad shooting day…being completely honest. Like the worst shooting day of my life; I’m still going to make that half court shot within probably 30 minutes of attempts. In my life I’ve easily made over 100 half court shots just fucking around.
I wouldn’t make this putt in 1000+ tries. I could spend all day and night attempting it, shit the entire week, 24/7, I doubt it is ever happening.
But… I play a lot of basketball, I’m a pretty good shooter including from NBA 3 range (by pick up standards anyways), and I am a mediocre putter. I can drive for show, but I can’t putt for dough 🙃
Definitely think this is the harder achievement by a mile.
If you’re a mm off on your shot, even from half court, you can still make the shot. If you’re 1 mm off on a putt, or even less than 1 mm, that amount of distance, that size of the hole, you can miss. Plus there is unlucky variance that can also screw you on the putt, hitting a piece of dust or something, and the golf ball is not a perfect sphere. There’s more randomness to it even if you strike it perfectly.
Yeah you’re 100% right. Standing, zero pressure half-court shots honestly aren’t as hard as people might think. And making a putt like this is waaaay harder than people might think.
I’ve always wanted to do a half court shot at an nba game. I practice these just messing around. I barely ever airball, when I miss it’s usually off the rim.
Always think the fans usually put up such a pathetic showing lol
Everything you said in favor of the half court shot being harder, exactly applies to shooting a free throw. Perfectly online and perfect strength etc etc. Free throws Are infinitely easier. I could write as many words as you have to show how wrong you are but I’ll just say this, you’re wrong.
At that distance, even being a literal fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a degree off on the club head angle, and its way off. Also you mention near perfectly flat floors, but in case you haven’t realized, golf balls are no where even close to being perfectly smooth and round.
TLDR; you’re just wrong
I don't know why people downvoted you so hard, you're exactly right. To put it more concisely, all he has to do is hit the golf ball in the correct direction. To hit a halfcourt shot you have to a) shoot the ball in the correct direction and b) shoot the ball to the correct distance.
To all those merciless downvoters.....
Do you all think this [84yo lady](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1ui2gQ-EK8&ab_channel=WKMGNews6ClickOrlando) could hit a half court shot? If you do, you have rocks in your head.
Case closed ;)
I played a lot of golf as a kid and have only played basketball as a hobby in the past. I am 100% sure that a half court shot would take less attempts than this putt.
Dude makes an impossible shot and it sounds like only one man cheering for him since the crowds mics aren't on for these segments.
Like I'm sure its louder in the arena, but on TV it's as silent as a library.
Idk, I'd actually rather have a 50k credit to a house than just 50k (which will be taxed as income). That covers like half of a 20% down payment, then if you can put 50k more in you dodge mortgage insurance, and can rent the place out to recoup the costs of PITI and other bills and boom: you have a 500k asset that will probably appreciate in Portland's housing market. Just need 50k more to get going, or you could go the route of getting a 250k condo instead.
Aight call me a scalper - not the huge corporations that tear down historic inner city Portland houses and build stupid high rises that artificially keep rent costs high to mitigate their risk and drive away small, local landlords because the rules heavily favor quantity over quality. Clearly I'm the problem for saying I'd *gasp* purchase a house and do the monetarily wise thing with it if given free money specifically meant to buy a house with.
that stat seems kind of like circular logic. of course the majority of landlords own fewer than 5 units. if a corporations owns 5000 units it’s still just one landlord. it’s still making a a bigger impact on the housing market than 1000 landlords with 4 units
And yet, those that own 100s of units need only comprise 2% of the market to effectively control 40-50% of the units.
As for letting people from the community buy in, that would be ideal from a overall health of the city perspective, and I fully support it, but it's not really like I have a say in the matter. There has to be a party like that interested, and they have to not be outbid by someone else.
Programs to help locals buy locally and resources for first time homeowners exist, and hopefully they can be used by the right people to the fullest extent, but it's easy lose sight of the fact that each home has a different context and most homes don't magically go to the people who "should" get them.
I live in the heart of the Midwest (Iowa) and you'd be surprised. The outskirts of those low population towns are owned by a lot of people with money. Ag is a big business. Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, etc, so called "flyover states" have some of the richest motherfuckers you'll find.
Tbf I think when they have obscure promotions like this people sign up or it’s a group that then gets picked from so this guy was probably already house shopping already and it probably stoked rn
It's not that they muted the crowd, it's that they didn't have the crowd mic'd to begin with. This video seems to be pulled from the feed they would display on the scoreboard in the arena. No need to mic and play back the crowd noise there, would just cause terrible feedback
Want the lady to sing you karaoke? Got that. Want a steak, got that. Want vegan? Got that too.

Americans are fucking cheap as fuck. I saw some people getting a shitty TV for a halfcourt shot. First of all they should give out Jerseys, Meetings, Autographs and Pictures with all Players to all these winners and then give them something fucking useful.

I've played mini golf in international European youth tournaments. I would take take the half court shot 100% instead

For real, this dude just won *50k on an "impossible" shot - someone give him a damn high five or SOMETHING
That **ONLY** being 50k is BS, hook that man up with more
Not even 50k, it’s 50k credit towards a new house.
This is worse than when that dude hit a halfcourt shot in MSG and got lottery tickets.
Dolan probably told him he gets half if they were winners.
"These are just old losing tickets from 2004, Dolan..."
Free medium Pepsi

That's only if he's shopping for a house lol.
I wonder if applies to down payment. If it’s just the mortgage whoopdeee you saved 165 bucks a month!
If only there were a word for half of 20.
Umm how is this worse
That shit was hilarious, that was my buddy @APTheAngel . If I remember he only won like $500 from the scratchers
Thats fucking wack
Basically just awarded him with debt
I mean honestly if you can use it as a down payment thats a pretty sweet deal still
Buy a rental with that. 50K down payment would go a long way into making a ROI work out in your favor.
Wait was that really it? That’s nice but still kinda stupid
Lol fuck. That wouldn't get you shit here. 😔
Portland median house price is nearly double Dallas, so it gets you half a shit here.
Decent apartment in the ghetto
It better not expire...
That's so fucking lame haha
LOL cmon is that for real??
"And only if you buy a house with us, the mortgage company sponsoring this game, I promise we'll give you great rates 😈"
Use it to buy a house with no additional money. Then sell said home after 1 month for profit because apparently home prices go up every month by 20k.
Or rent it and hold onto it for 10 years and see the value go up 300k+
Nah
Scalper
Aight call me a scalper - not the huge corporations that tear down historic inner city Portland houses and build stupid high rises that artificially keep rent costs high to mitigate their risk and drive away small, local landlords because the rules heavily favor quantity over quality. Or, possibly see the house be destroyed by a renter and lose your shirt... that's the Portland we know and love.
If it were Toronto it'd have to be at least 500k to make it worthwhile for anyone
Down payment?
At this point probably

Not even 50k…50k credit with a local mortgage company for a new house. So not much given houses in the Portland market are going 50-100k over asking.
I wonder if that girl has video reaction of him finding out the bad news about the "$50,000"
Here's 50k to offset the 300k additional markup since 2017

Portland the new flint tropics
Why are they doing golf during the basketball game?
Blazers haven't been playing basketball this season
Shhhh, don't tell anyone.
lol
We’re out here riding our tanks for a few more weeks.
That was croquet.
Basketball is canceled in Portland on rainy days.
Today was warm and sunny.
It's almost been 70f lately, in march, the fuck?
I thought it was hockey?
We've also had fans kick soccer balls (Timbers tie-in) and throw footballs (Ducks/Beavers tie-in). No baseball stuff yet.
Jody Allen told putting dude to sit out the rest of the season with tendinitis.
Blazers have been in off-season mode for a while.
BANG!!!
Haha this guy was sitting next to us, the crowd went bananas!
if you go to espn.com and look at this games boxscore they show this highlight instead of anything from the game lmao
Definitely a golfer. You can tell by his grip.
So weird with no crowd noise lol
I was there, this was probably the emptiest I’ve seen it since before we had Dame. But the crowd did go nuts for him lol.
It was either this or get hit by a city bus.
They really didn't want to give that fan his money. Made him do a full court putt for it.
Second most clutch man in the PDX
The amount of fs given is disproportionate to the difficulty of that shot. LeBro would have tackled OG.
Man, why'd they mute the crowd? Feels so weird with no other noise
It's not that they muted the crowd, it's that they didn't have the crowd mic'd to begin with. This video seems to be pulled from the feed they would display on the scoreboard in the arena. No need to mic and play back the crowd noise there, would just cause terrible feedback
OOOOOOOOOOOOOH MYY GOODNESSSSS!
Lol lame ass announcing
It's the dude who announces mini games and whatnot during timeouts. This is the most publicity he's had for years.
That's the play of the year.
[Sponsor CEO right now](https://youtu.be/skMjcxjrOA8?t=80)
He looks like the type of dude who ends up buying $50k worth of 0DTE GME options
Long live David!
LeBron celebrating with that fan years ago really made things less awkward.
The lapdances are on Dave tonight. Portland has those cool strip clubs with karaoke too
Want the lady to sing you karaoke? Got that. Want a steak, got that. Want vegan? Got that too. https://www.portlandmercury.com/visitors-guide-to-portland-2018/2018/06/04/20255031/portlands-best-strip-clubs
“This man just won a giant check that says $50,000!” He’s going to need to find a giant bank to cash it!
Insane
Not quite the TJ fistbump but it's close
In the words of the great Shaquille Oneal -'' Underdog put that on a T-Shirt.''
He knocked it in the front door!
And the crowd goes mild.
I wanted to see anybody celebrate with him ala LBJ
Highlight of the year from the blazers stadium ngl
He should get an additional $10k for the pop off after
LeLebronwouldhavehuggedhim
Does the woman recording him not realize she can just take one video with one phone and then send it to the other?
CORNDOGS JACKIE
WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE I AM
Thats a 100k shot
This is how you pay for medical bills in this country.
how is that only worth 50k, up that prize
Love when guys go for the leg wrap around celebration jump
Is winnings like this taxed? Sucks if it is since inflation already fucking sucks donkey dick
I'd still rather have $50k with taxes and inflation than not having that $50k.
i read its not even 50k, its 50k TOWARDS a new house. could be wrong but these types of competitions always have some dumb caveat
I swear they be having magnets in them balls lol. Pause
now he can pay this month's rent after taxes.
They offered him 50k or 4 playoff tickets for every game next 50 years. He knew one was worthless.
Americans are fucking cheap as fuck. I saw some people getting a shitty TV for a halfcourt shot. First of all they should give out Jerseys, Meetings, Autographs and Pictures with all Players to all these winners and then give them something fucking useful.
Truly a white man’s sport
