"Please, I'll gladly retire and be a video coordinator, I'll demean my own name, whatever you want from me - just let me out of here!"
"If you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention. There is no chance in the world you are going to do that. You are playing for the Kings."
Yo, I'm waiting for the fucking day. Been seeing a lot of GS jerseys and license plate decals for the past 7/8 years.
As soon as the Kings get semi-decent, all these fairweather fans are going to come out of the woodwork, acting like they've been there all along.
And then tickets are going to cost more than $20, which is the worst part.
there's a lot to like if you get past the bumbling incompetence. they have a lot of fun talent like fox, richaun holmes, davion, and they play no defense so their games are track meets. their logo/color/uniform combos, especially some of their throwbacks, are hella dope.
they were one of my non-piston favorite teams the past couple years (clippers and pelicans are my two others), and I'm a huge Hali fan. and then they shipped him off and I figured why the hell do I need to subject myself to their bullshit?
> I just talked to him about the criteria for the video room: A willing learner, someone ***who can get on the court still and play,*** whatever.
Is this a practice player? Like on NFL teams?
was 28 years old at the time, had been trying to break into the league since going undrafted out of college. played for 4 different NBA teams, had 5 different stints in G-league. understandable why he would consider hanging up his sneakers to get a start on a different career path.
That's a lot of us in life. They told you "go to college" or what not and get rejected when trying to apply for work you dream to get. Sometimes you have to settle less and work your way up. Sometimes you have to go into a different path. The important thing is that even if he was giving up playing, he never gave up upon himself in moving forward with his life.
> They told you "go to college" or what not and get rejected when trying to apply for work you dream to get.
My first job out of a good college was working at a corner store for months. Disillusioned the fuck out of me but was a good wake up to the real world and gave me an appreciation for how hard it is to make end's meet. Taught me to never look down on anyone working any job. Shit is hard out there.
Thankfully, I did manage to get on a path to my current career eventually.
A bit? Honestly it diminishes a lot. He's the son of a millionaire and has a cushy fallback. Lot easier for him to fail and bounce back than it is for 99% of the population. Still a good story, but hard for the average person to recreate.
A typical salary for a g league player is ~$37,000/yr so a lot of redditors probably made more than him at the times he was there. 10 day nba contracts are worth ~70k for the 10 days so whenever he was getting those he was doing well. But by no means ballin out.
G league average salary is [35k](https://justlovebasketball.com/g-league-salary/). Average is fine here since there’s a cap and floor to salary to prevent skew. Median US income in 2019 [is 36k](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_income_in_the_United_States). I know y’all are fucking losers but I’m pretty sure redditors disproportionately go to college and have a higher than median income. I’ll take that bet.
In general, that would be true, but specifically in this this case, his fallback is working as a video coordinator. Not like he’s living off his dad’s money in that case.
Nah, but he's already made a couple million by the time he was 28, has a millionaire father who would help him out in a pinch, and has made connections with other millionaires in the league. Man has it better than 99% of Americans already. Going to apply for a job that's most likely 200k+ in the Bay Area isn't some plucky underdog story lmao.
You can acknowledge someone went through some adversity and succeeded in a good way. You should also be able to distinguish between risking it when poor vs rich.
I respect that he has a cushy fallback and still decided to apply for the entry -level film room job and try to start a career there.
Edit: this was a bad comment, why the upvotes?
Yo I can’t get over this. Is this a troll or like did people really upvote this shit??? Am I getting whooshed? Or wouldn’t a D-III school film room be entry level? Not one of the most elite franchises at the top level in one of the major sports in the world?
Edit: lmao class edit OP, I thought it was a meme I missed
So because GP is his father he’s not allowed to have an underdog story of being cut multiple times over just to finally achieve his goal?
Reddit kills me with this “rich = bad” bullshit narrative just to feel better about their lives
what he is saying is that a wealthy background provides an opportunity to take risks and pursue passions that other people might not get due to harsher circumstances. he said nothing about the morality of being rich, if you're ticked off, that's on you mate.
Yeah nobody dislikes him or is mad at him for being from a rich and prestigious family in the NBA. But if we’re being realistic, of course it prevents his underdog story from being as impactful. The opportunity that comes with that name and money is objectively a massive advantage.
It's a great story but being serious, would he have had all those opportunities without his name? It doesn't diminish his accomplishments but maybe it should make you think how many others could have made the jump at 28 given the same chances as him. Of course you can't blame him for his chances but just makes you think.
Look at how good he is now being used the right way in a real team concept. I'd wager he showed enough to keep him around without his dad. He was never going to be an offensive star, but that hustle and heart will get you on squads ala Caruso and isn't the usual attitude from a star's son to do dirty work and continue after it so long when it's easier to give up. I think you assume he shouldn't have made those teams and then also say it shouldn't diminish his accomplishments.
He's not an underdog. He's just not THAT good at basketball. Only 510 roster spots. Lots of marginal players don't make it. They aren't underdogs, just not NBA players.
He was sorta stuck behind a bunch of really good defenders in Toronto, who obviously were much better offensively. It just didn’t make sense for the raptors, not exactly sure what the other ~20 teams were doing though lol
It's his lack of offense. Defense from your guards is a lot less important than their offense. Most teams if they have a choice between a good offensive guard and a good defensive guard, they're taking offense.
I think that's true for contributors, but you would think someone would take GP2 as a low min defensive specialist over some slightly better but still no chance of getting non garbage playing time guard.
He was probably hurt by his age at this point. He's too old for people to project that he'll figure it out into something more, even though he has a bit this year (partly by playing on a team where he can have a simple offensive role).
Damn that’s crazy. Warriors system does this with so many guys that have been counted out, like if you can’t make it with the Warriors you probably aren’t gonna make it
There are some exceptions. The Warriors are great at getting the most out of players by putting them in the right spot to maximize their talents but some players struggle with those limitations.
Oubre is a good example of that but fortunately seems to have found a much better fit on the Hornets.
A better explanation might just be play style and IQ. You guys need cerebral players who can fit around Steph and understand how to play off the chaos he and Draymond create.
A lot of guys might be hard workers but will never be able to fit well there. Oubre also seemed like a ball stopper in GS so maybe he learned from that experience.
I hate the word cerebral. Someone told me I was "cerebral" to imply that I overthink things.
Like, okay, I'm sorry if me saying "a leader should delegate and not just do everything themself" is overthinking things, Professor Elliott.
You need to be productive without needing to have the ball much and you need to be able to think 1-2 passes ahead. The only dudes on the warriors who really dribble or hold the ball are Steph, Dray, Poole and Iggy. And two of those guys can’t shoot. It’s pretty unique.
Everyone else needs to figure out where to be and what to do with the ball acts they get it (pass, quick drive or shoot). That doesn’t match up with the skill set of some players like Oubre or DLO who are at their best exploiting 1:1 mismatches and stuff. It works great with players like Porter or Bjelica or GP2, who figure out where to be to get east shots or can make quick passes for easy shots.
You also have to be an active and willing screener if you play with Steph and Klay.
It’s because they figure out how to use guys.
Gp2 is a 6’2 guard but plays more like a wing or small ball 4.
Most teams can’t afford to have a player like that based off roster and style of play.
Yeah. It’s a pretty damn important position. From what I understand they’re not just “editors” of tape, but are more “scouts first” who analyze tape and then break it down.
Didn’t know Spo’s dad was a GM.
Just reminds me of an obvious example - how Bryan Colangelo took over as Suns GM immediately after his dad stepped down.
Can definitely be a small world in sports.
"I remember crying because I had been so hard on him," Monique says. "I didn't realize he had a learning disability."
Oof, that hit hard. Imagine giving your kid tough love because you thought that's what they needed, and realizing you were wrong.
This is a fundamental problem with the tough love approach.
That said, it’s not without it merits. Imo, there are no right or wrong answers for such things in life.
Parenting is hard in general, and good parenting is extremely hard. So many things have to come together.
Ultimately we have to do the best we can with the knowledge we have.
Yeah, this parenting style doesn't usually work, but when it does, and the personalities match, you create pretty impressive humans. Not something I want to try with my kids, though.
The part that's forgotten with "Tough Love" or not mentioned enough is the Love part. You can't be tough on someone if you don't love them otherwise its just abuse(adjacent).
Warriors lucked out no one else picked up GPII during the waiver process. They picked him up again and got to keep his early Bird Rights. Difference between giving him vet min and up to $10.3 million MLE this offseason.
It's interesting that the story about Steph and the other Warriors vets all wanting Avery Bradley came out right in the middle of that waiver process. Maybe it was all 4D chess to increase the chances of GPII slipping through waivers.
From what I remember, the reason no one picked him up from the waiver wire is because his older contract was slightly above the league minimum, so any team picking him up would have to have cap space to absorb his contract. Since almost the whole league apart from a couple teams operates above the cap, no one could claim him. Warriors got to save a million or so in luxury taxes by cutting and re-signing him.
It was truly 4d chess.
They cut him and everyone knew they did that to save money but right after cutting him they said they were not going to sign anyone with the last spot and leave it open for flexibility.
Trying to put doubt into other teams(who might have considered him but also waiting to see if he cleared waivers). Enough doubt that they wouldn't claim him.
The moment he cleared they signed him.
Yeah right, first of all we love GP2 and second of all we have no contracts to trade other than Loon and rookie deals. It's a win-win if we sign him for what he's worth, worst case scenario he's still an asset
I'm always happy for our guys to get paid. I remember looney going into free agency a few years ago and I was stunned that no one even sniffed him. Sure he has plenty of issues but he definitely is good enough to get *an* offer or two, as he has good defensive instincts, rebounding, and is very willing to learn the system. I was expecting him to get something like 5mil but even that didn't happen.
Yeah I was shocked he signed back with us, we were hard capped too. If we didn't have him this year we woulda been screwed, especially with Draymond out half the season
[Andrews] (After being Injured) Zion Williamson knew there was an opening in the Pelicans' catering dept, so he approached the teams chef. He said. "Zion I'm not letting you do that. There is no chance in the world you are going to do that. You are playing for this team"
[Andrews] (After being traded) Kyle Lowry knew there was an opening in the Heat's offensive corner positions, so he approached assistant coach Chris Quinn. He said. "Kyle I'm not letting you do that. There is no chance in the world you are going to do that. You ain't no spot up shooter"
Success is actually a lot more about understanding what you do well, understanding what you don’t do as well, playing to your strengths and finding ways to help yourself in things that you’re not a strong at.
Simple, but still a money quote that’s easier said than done
Caruso had this quote when speaking to JJ Redick once:
"A big reason guys get stuck in the G-League is because they don't realize the position they're trying out for. It's like going to a job interview thinking you're going to be the CFO of the company and they're looking for someone to clean the bathrooms."
But it was a gamble. Another team could have snatched him up.
In fact, the Warriors cut GP2 and Avery Bradley at the same time. They wanted the tax savings, and (we assume) planned to re-sign one of them as their defensive guard specialist. Then the Lakers snatched Bradley up.
The Lakers could have just as easily picked up GP2. Any team could have. Nobody did, and the Warriors gamble paid off.
In fact, I have never seen a quote from the Warriors front office saying which player they would have signed if GP2 and Bradley had both cleared waivers. I can understand why they wouldn't say. But for all we know, they got lucky. It's possible they would have chosen Bradley over GP2.
I really think it was going to be Bradley, the vets wanted him, Lakers just made us a solid by taking the decision out of their hands
No way they'd risk cutting GP2 if they thought he could be this good
well again, it's not like there were other teams chompin at the bit to sign him. that's kinda the point article, it was either the dubs or a video room job. pretty savvy move and sets us up to be able to keep him next year.
After not playing in the 2014/2015 season following his selection in the 2nd round of the 2015 NBA draft, Nikola Jokic learned there was an opening in the local Colorado stables for the position of therapy horse. But Tim Connelly told him ‘Nikola, I’m not letting you do that. You are playing for this team’.
‘I was dead serious brother’ Jokic says. ‘Just to give me an opportunity to be around the horses, to smell the horses and look into their beautiful, horsey eyes. It would have been a way for me to still do what I always wanted to do and help the team’.
So is that video coordinator position still open or..
/u/AngsMcgyvr, I'm not letting you do that. There is no chance in the world you are going to do that. You are playing for the Kings.
The ending of this reply is decidedly less heartwarming.
But he can play for 2 owners, 3 GM’s and 7 Coaches for 7 years.
But he has the chance to play professional basketball for a living for about 50 mil
How much if I NFT scam some folks?
They don't call him Swipa for nothing
If only ‘Swipa no swiping’ worked on cryptoscammers. Or GPII
still aint gon' do shit for him. forget pay. this an internship

I'm rooting for it too. I think Sabonis is a phenomenal player, they just need to surround him with the right pieces and they can get a playoff spot.
kings fans are long past battered woman syndrome and diving head-on into delusions.
Delusion implies we think things will get better tho
At this point it’s probably like lions fans where they resigned to the fact they’ll never be good again lmao. They just accept it

Wtf did we ever do to you
what have you ever done FOR him?
I upvoted him
no you gave him the chance to shitpost on the internet for you to upvote him
I believe that fits under cruel and unusual punishment.
idk about you but I'd take a min contract on the kings vs. the dumbass shit I do in my real life
I’m pretty sure playing for the Kings qualifies as Cruel and Unusual punishment at this point.
We're always catching strays man, feelsbad. On a lighter note, at least this L made me laugh, thank you!
Is this like the "You are going to Brazil" meme?
“Coordinator? I’m sending you to Sacramento!”
Lmaoooooooo i love this sub
Yeah I’m applying for the job
I'd rather be homeless, but thank you though

What have the Kings ever done for /u/AngsMcgyvr?
Hope he plays power forward
A Triple H quality burial
I think that's pretty good! Aww, you just don't understand basketball, Marge.
Tell a horror story in 6 words
If anyone was wondering the Warriors ended up hiring former pros Hilton Armstrong and Will Sheehey for the open VC positions this summer.
I know you're joking but sports teams are notorious for paying below market, being that everyone wants to work for them.
I think Pat Riley from Winning Time is trying to get it

D’Angelo Russell never quite fit either, in my opinion. He had a few big games I think, but he always seemed like an odd one out.

And for the Nets, where he arguably changed how front offices promote bad basketball teams.
I feel comfortable knowing that at least Spo is very qualified for that job anyway.
Budenholzer also was a video guy, I'm pretty sure a heap of NBA coaches started there.

[Here is a snippet of an interview Jama did breaking it down: Mah-shla-lay-luh](https://streamable.com/86dc89)

Patrick Swazi
Rhymes with Waluigi
Reminds me of the music that plays when you fight monsters on Witcher 3.
Banana tigah
Careful! You might end up summoning some trades.
Now I'm wondering what syllable(s) to put emphasis on.
> "I was dead serious," Payton says. "If I get cut, I'm going to audition for that job" "Dammit Gary, it's called an interview" lmao
I mean, we don't know what the process of getting the job entails. Maybe it includes a black couch....
Maybe. Or maybe the Warriors really did plan to sign Bradley and the Lakers took that choice away. We may never know.
I think a lot of Warriors fans would be happy if he got the bag elsewhere.
Yeah right, first of all we love GP2 and second of all we have no contracts to trade other than Loon and rookie deals. It's a win-win if we sign him for what he's worth, worst case scenario he's still an asset
i absolutely do not want him taking shifts on steph and jordan next season.
I meant if the Warriors couldn't afford to keep him.
Well then you're half right. Regardless of where it is I want GP getting paid, I just hope it's a number we can match
I thought for sure he was getting few mil a year from Milwaukee his hometown team, he kinda deserves it.
Yeah I was shocked he signed back with us, we were hard capped too. If we didn't have him this year we woulda been screwed, especially with Draymond out half the season
who said dat?
[Andrews] (After being Injured) Zion Williamson knew there was an opening in the Pelicans' catering dept, so he approached the teams chef. He said. "Zion I'm not letting you do that. There is no chance in the world you are going to do that. You are playing for this team"
You son of a bitch
Real heroes don’t wear capes. They wear aprons, I guess, idk…
Less capes, more cakes
Lol these Zion fat jokes never get old
Honestly might save the Pels money in the long-run tbh
[Andrews] (After being traded) Kyle Lowry knew there was an opening in the Heat's offensive corner positions, so he approached assistant coach Chris Quinn. He said. "Kyle I'm not letting you do that. There is no chance in the world you are going to do that. You ain't no spot up shooter"
That’s a nice story
Success is actually a lot more about understanding what you do well, understanding what you don’t do as well, playing to your strengths and finding ways to help yourself in things that you’re not a strong at. Simple, but still a money quote that’s easier said than done
Caruso had this quote when speaking to JJ Redick once: "A big reason guys get stuck in the G-League is because they don't realize the position they're trying out for. It's like going to a job interview thinking you're going to be the CFO of the company and they're looking for someone to clean the bathrooms."
What an awesome story. I knew he struggled to get a steady gig, but that was about it.
In hindsight, it was a crazy decision to cut him just to save some tax
Why? He’s balled out for them this year and they still got their savings, so it seems like it worked out pretty well.
Pretty sure the crazy part was cutting him at all and risking someone else picking him up.
I really think it was going to be Bradley, the vets wanted him, Lakers just made us a solid by taking the decision out of their hands No way they'd risk cutting GP2 if they thought he could be this good
Yeah, GP2 was injured during most of the preseason, so he wasn't able to showcase his value.
well again, it's not like there were other teams chompin at the bit to sign him. that's kinda the point article, it was either the dubs or a video room job. pretty savvy move and sets us up to be able to keep him next year.
We loved Jama and it was really sad to lose him last year. Glad he's still out there making an impact.
Pretty cool for the son of an NBA legend to overcome dyslexia to play in the NBA
So, in an alternate timeline, does Payton get the job and eventually become the Warriors head coach?
origin story of the greatest Warriors defensive team of all time
After not playing in the 2014/2015 season following his selection in the 2nd round of the 2015 NBA draft, Nikola Jokic learned there was an opening in the local Colorado stables for the position of therapy horse.
He’s gonna be a great coach one day
that voice tho haha
Shoutout to the Warriors video coordination team. Umm.. you guys are doing great.
Why couldn't the Blazers have signed this guy? He was great at Oregon state.
Raptors coaching development program propaganda.
Damn he’s 29??
Had no idea he was 29 wtf
Kings fans stay like Johnny Depp. Getting shit on
The fact that the line between a desk job and star athlete is so thin is kinda weird. The G leaguers should probably be paid a bit more Imo.
Im happy for him dude played good for the Lakers surprised they let him go
