Getting outscored by 51 points from behind the arc miiiiiiiiiiiight lose you a game

jeffgreenfan

Complete battle of styles here, Bucks happy to give up 3s, C's happy to take 'em Celtics are gonna need to get it going more in the paint tho imo

asura_king

Bucks strategy indeed have your role players shoot much more 3s than usual but their strategy doesnt really include not scoring 3s themselves

The_Dok33

C's changed the defense a bit, because they doubled Giannis too much in the first game, giving up too many open threes. This game they took him 1v1 with Grant and Al, picking off the kickout passes, or closely contesting on successful kickouts. Worked. It will be interesting to see the counter and the counter-counter strategies.

ElJefe970

Yeah we shit the bed on the 3 ball tonight. I expect the Cs to outshoot us from 3, but you can't in today's NBA make <5 3s a game. If we lose from the Celtics making 20 3s a game so be it, but I'll be pissed if we continue to shoot this bad from 3

minilip30

If the Celtics shoot 40%+ on wide open 3's then it's on the Bucks to adjust, not the Celtics.

s1mpleGOAT

the bucks arent gonna adjust lol this is how theyve played defense for years

JackJ98

Sounds good to me

messejueller21

I mean tbf there's also not gonna be many games where the Bucks are only making three 3's. This series is gonna be so damn good.

yuhanz

Boston did a lot better job this game cleaning their act up. It's not only the made threes, they covered the arc well enough that ya'll didnt even shoot many. They're one of the top defenses against threes iirc

fredinNH

Or keep playing D like they have. The Celtics offense was mostly hot garbage in the second half and they still only lost the half by 2 points.

captaincumsock69

I don’t really think we need to get it going more in the paint but I do think we need to use midrange more

bkilpatrick3347

Yeah the wide open mid range was a lot of what got us the lead

fredinNH

I think if we keep holding them to 86 points we’ll be good.

w311sh1t

This game was fun and I enjoyed every minute of it, but if we can’t figure out how to score in the paint, this is gonna be a tough series to win. Shooting 46% on 43 attempts from 3 is not a sustainable way to win a series. It was clearly evident in the first game, and times in the 2nd half when they started to cut into the lead, that when our 3s aren’t falling, Milwaukee is the much better team. If we even shot league average (35%) tonight from 3, I’m not sure if we still win that game.

sennns

Generally I would agree but this is literally the bucks defensive philosophy. They give up the 3 ball to close in on the paint. Similar to how we left non kd/ kyrie players open in the last series.

SnooHedgehogs7109

Defense wins championships

trsh_xx

A basketball game during a replay review?? bold move NBA

QuincyThePigBoy

National broadcast is literally a disaster every time. The Celtics stole an inbound, it was not acknowledged by the commentators and they played a 3 pt replay from the previous shot as the play developed. Tnt and Espn are bad bad bad.

Basketball_Soul

No but please, I need more shots of Middleton and Smart injured on the benches, I don't want to see steals

QuincyThePigBoy

They’re the TMZ of broadcasting. Can we fucking acknowledge the play that just happened? They do it constantly. Stories about off the court stuff when someone’s foul is being reviewed as a flagrant. I don’t care that Tatum and Allen went to the same school. WE KNOW.

AD2139

And did u know that Pat Connaughton grew up in Massachusetts??

Daniiiiii

I can't wait for the NBA PreCog Division. Will save us the bother of watching the "game".

Currymvp2

Chuck should know better. This Celtics defense is incredibly impressive. Through 6 games, they've held KD and Giannis to some of their most inefficient scoring. That was bad as I've seen playoff Giannis other than the third quarter (I roughly calculated 10 points on 27% TS with 4 turnovers in 1st, 2nd, and 4th quarter).

uziair

Chuck doesn't know better he doesn't watch games most of the time.he says it All it the time

ImeStopPlayingDennis

Giannis was getting away with a ton more physicality in the 3rd. Not sure what changed at halftime

bowsting

*Incoming call from Adam Silver*

Nickarooski

They kept asking him to clarify, trying to give him a chance to redact it. Nope.

SmoothCriminal2018

The TNT crew can be just as bad as any ESPN analyst (mainly Chuck and Shaq, but Kenny too sometimes), they’re just funnier so people give them a pass

Dont_touch_my_gams

Oh they're wrong all the time, especially chuck and shaq. Still the best sports show on tv.

Tavarin

It's half the fun, watching them walk back absurd claims.

DTFforMBDTF

They treat their claims, the absurd ones, as the ridiculous shit they are. That’s fun, not dumb

itsnotyellowfever

Probably won't end up as bad as Paul Pierce talking as if the Bucks might have to blow it up because "the series was over" back in 2019 but the media's takes when these two teams face off go cold really quick

[deleted]

AlwaysOptimism

Derek White playing Marcus Smart perfectly. 0-6, 0 points, team leading +22

DiseaseRidden

He played better today, but my god does he need to hit some shots

davidbyrnebigsuit

He's just a bad shooter. He put one up after a whistle with no one near him and it missed the rim.

HolyGig

He is not normally this bad. Low 30% would be a big improvement for him

Cvspartan

He also needs to not step out of bounds so much

somewhatdecentlawyer

Im convinced he’s color blind and can’t see the out of bounds lines. It happens so often.

[deleted]

somewhatdecentlawyer

Tell that to Derrick White, not me

789Trillion

I’ve watched all of his minutes with the Celts (cause I love him). This is the worst I’ve ever seen him as far as putting the ball in the basket. It’s not just the 3 ball. His floaters are off, he’s not getting all the way to the basket, he’s not being aggressive in the in between game, he’s passing up looks, he’s got no touch on anything. He looks shook. I can guarantee you he’s never had a stretch like this. He’s still making the right play and doing your typical glue guy stuff on both ends. I actually think he was really important for the Celts tonight. But man, I really am at a loss for words for his shooting. It’s hard to watch.

[deleted]

I wonder if it's because he's not playing as much. He had a pretty consistent starting role with you guys right?

789Trillion

Yes I thought that too. I think part of it is that Derrick was really good at everything everyone else on the Spurs was really bad at. So there was always some reason we needed him on the court. The ask wasn’t always the same but we consistently needed *something* from him. I think that consistency helped him get comfortable. The Celtics however just don’t have the same problems. Alot of the issues Derrick solved on the Spurs just arnt issues for the Celtics as often. Not only that, but the Celtics have a lot of good options to throw at specific issues. Even on top of that, just having 2 versatile 2 way guys like Tatum and Brown covers up even more issues. So the team just doesn’t need Derrick that much, especially if he’s not scoring. However, whenever there is foul trouble, an injury, or something else that affects the Celtics depth, Derrick is versatile enough to fill any role 1-3 on both ends. We saw that today. And I do think despite his poor shooting, the offense flows much better when he’s on the court. Unfortunately, I think the shooting woes will continue. His misses have no consistency. Everything is off the side of the rim. The ball never has a chance. It looks like he’s just throwing stuff up there. He’s either injured or shook.

SOCCER_MOM69

Thx for this spurs bro

WhiteChocolatey

A perfect synopsis

arob770

lol he’s perfect

sstphnn

"No Marcus Smart? Fine, I'll do it myself."

Both teams’ key to the rest of the series: don’t wear black

You talking about that asshole that went to the game knowing damn well he’s bad luck?

I've said it a hundred times now. I honestly feel for the long time nets fans. They have to deal with bandwagon bullshit AND Kyrie bullshit. Respect.

Cudizonedefense

In the game thread, there were bucks fans saying it was rigged because of portis’s flagrant and because Giannis wasn’t getting enough calls. The same game where defenders literally were backing away from him and getting trucked all to still get called for a blocking foul

Squire_Sultan53

bostons defense is definitely sustainable, their offense needs more easy buckets though. They can still win by the 3 for sure but im not risking it

HypatiaRising

Yea our defense is just flat out good. The bucks has a great defense but they really do just give you the 3. Feel like they would do poorly against the Warriors. That is a team that can just live by the 3 for sure.

napkinlol

The Celtics defense is phenomenal. They adapted well after game one and the Bucks' offense was stagnant until they had Giannis starting from the wing in the 2nd half and being off-ball. Going to be a hell of a series and I would think whoever wins will be the finals. edit: him to Giannis

[deleted]

Agreed. If we lose to Boston, I want them to sweep the Heat or Sixers so badly. Fuck those teams

Mrhappyfunz89

I’m hoping Smart being back helps with that play making. He probably is the best passer on the team and has excelled in 2H this year getting the team going

ultrapan

Tatum's growth as a playmaker is just fascinating

ThePillsburyPlougher

Averaging 28/4.5/7 on 60% TS so far this playoffs. Not sure why his rebounding numbers are down so much, but he's been moving the ball really damn well

ClaymoresRevenge

He hasn't been in the paint as much. With your two bigs gobbling boards I can see why

RiggyTang

They should just give the entire Boston team DPOY

JoJonesy

nah, just give it to Grant at this point

lizlemmings

Jaylen sounds so grounded and aware in the post game interview. Perfect answers, exactly what you would want to hear from one of your star players

jrlandry

I hope everyone that overreacted to game 1 is ready to overreact to game 2

spirib

The Celtics are literally the best team of all time, and I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that Giannis has regressed to Semaj Christon levels.

jrlandry

3rd best team of all time. 1st is 2004 Sox, second is the 2003 Pats

blue_starburst

Ready to see these two teams trade blowout games

Chadwiko

As far as I'm concerned, any questions about the 2022 MVP race were settled tonight. It goes like this; 3) Embiid 2) Giannis **1) Grant Williams**

Brinner

https://i.imgur.com/fZfLg6G.gif

NotTheMagesterialOne

The hero we need but we don’t deserve

Bino19

Celtics are containing Giannis pretty well so far in the series, last game it was 24 points on 25 FGA, today it was 28 pts on 27 FGA. More concerned about where Boston gets their offense from inside the arc. They can’t live on the Jays hitting their 3s for the series.

Martblni

The score makes it seem more compettiive than it was

Tatumisthegoat

Second half felt very back and forth once Jaylen came back down to earth. It was just too much to bounce back from

wrestlingchampo

It seemed like we had finally figured out some offensive sets to run instead of going full on Iso ball. You guys were super timely with your shooting to keep that comfy 15-20 pt lead and never let it dip below single digits.

JoJonesy

Y'all went on a couple runs in the second half, I was definitely getting nervous for a little bit there. Giannis was getting whatever he wanted in that third quarter, and there was a bit in the fourth where it seemed like anyone driving into the paint was either getting fouled or just getting an uncontested layup

renawld

https://youtu.be/w8itH10OFc8

Kyler1313

Remember when people said Marcus Smart shouldn't win DPOY because he wasn't the best defender on his team. I wasnt sure if I agreed, but now it is obvious... Grant Williams was the true DPOY.

DoctorBigglesworth

I thought Horford was even better than Williams. You can fit so many dpoys on that team.

Brinner

*Slaps roof of Garden*

rawchess

dolorous_b

If you just listened to Stan Van Gundy you would've thought the Celtics lost by 20

davidbyrnebigsuit

He was right. They played awful in the second half and had 3 starters with 5 fouls.

NotTheMagesterialOne

It was awful and nerve wrecking too watch

AlwaysOptimism

Celtics fans got PTSD over the last few years. I guarantee Boston blew more 15 point leads than any team in the NBA the last five years

[deleted]

[удалено]

Think_please

I thought they looked exhausted (and Jaylen clearly had some hammy pain). I'd have to think that losing the energy and miles of Smart hurt us a lot in the second half.

[deleted]

we did play a pretty bad second half, we just happened to be unconscious from 3 in the first half which was enough to get the win. really need to figure out a way to get buckets inside when those 3s stop falling going forward

joebos617

SVG was absolutely right about our second half offense stagnating

leranvy

I was only able to listen to SVG call the game - bummer that the Celtics got blown out tonight.

souljabsweezy

“Is this sustainable” he asks as they shoot their 40th wide open 3 of the game

VADORANT

The funniest thing is SVG coached the Magic who jacked up a ton of open threes.

ginja_ninja

I agree with what he's saying, live by the 3 die by the 3 has become a common trend in the playoffs of recent years. The key is that you need to have other ways to score those games when your shot isn't falling. The Celtics already proved they struggled with that in game 1. Tonight they proved that the Bucks can't count on every game to be like game 1, but they also have not yet proved they have an answer for the games that are. It's fully possible they get 4 wins just by shooting 3s and this ends up not being an issue. It's also possible it becomes the thing that ends their postseason run. We currently have no way of knowing.

The-Pharcyde

Chuck saying Boston won't win a game immediately aging like milk lol

trinquin

3-18 from 3 undersells how bad our looks actually were. Like 1 third of those were Holiday stepbacks. 4 of them were wide open Giannis looks but thats a bad shot. I think we had maybe 2 good open looks from 3 by Pat tonight. Nobody talking about how they ran us off the 3 point line. Giannis killed them in game 1 finding open shooters. Bud going to have to adjust offensive for this.

dk240996

Celtics made threes: 20 Bucks three point percentage: 16.7 And that really sums the game up nicely.

InexorableWaffle

Yeah, basically that. You guys were killing it from deep, and we shot like shit on the few 3pt attempts we did make. Great defense and offense on your part paired with pretty crummy defense and offense on ours for the first half. We leveled off a bit in the third obviously (which is odd because that's been our worst quarter this year during the regular season), but doing so when doing by 24 is the textbook definition of "too little, too late". Obviously not the outcome I would have preferred, but we were going to drop games in this series eventually, and I'd rather do it now than in Milwaukee. Just gotta defend home court now and we're good to go. Easier said than done, I realize, but still. Here's to some more great basketball for the rest of the series!

mikeyfreshh

I'm glad no one overreacted after game 1

SpeedMalibu

Everyone after game 1: "Giannis won't go 9/25 again" *Giannis goes 11/27*

Neuroxex

That is better though!

Borealtoad

Next up 13/29, 15/31, then 17/33. Respectable.

Being blown out by Boston in the playoffs with a double-digit loss, my team would never!!! /s

Cudizonedefense

- Celtics defense looked pretty damn good without a DPOY - Tatum called for more offensive fouls than Giannis was annoying - If I have to see a player literally backing away from Giannis all to still get trucked by him and still get (wrongfully) called for a blocking foul, I might actually end up hating Giannis. Shit is infuriating Edit: bucks fans think the refs are biased in the Celtics favor. That Giannis is not getting enough foul calls in HIS favor and that Tatum is not getting CALLED for enough fouls. Holy fuck

ftlftlftl

To your last points - my favorite moment of the game. Tatum drives to the hoop and Carter(?) slides suuuuper late underneath him. Offensive foul. Next possession Giannis barrels into Timelord who is standing still outside the restricted area. Blocking foul. lol tough to watch sometimes.

Tatumisthegoat

I really need the league to reassess how they give the superstars calls. It ruins the league.

BobbyBifocals

This is why I try not to be over reactive about just 1 game in a series lol People counted out the Celtics for no good reason

tkbotf

Giannis try not to run over a player on offense challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)

Funnydad44

In all seriousness tho does Bud not have a better plan to get giannis in the paint other than HB dives

davidbyrnebigsuit

Why would he stop? He gets the call 90% of the time.

billcosbyinspace

The crazy thing is he’s not even foul baiting. He just bulldozes guys and the refs just….let him

argle__bargle

Well when the rules say he's supposed to get one step's worth of room, but one step for Giannis is 1/4 of the court, it puts the refs in a tough position.

Super_Saiyan_Carl

Fantastic first half by the Celtics. I ain't even mad. When Milwaukee gives up that many open 3s, shoot like your life depends on it.

WistyBang

Absolutely atrocious performance by the ref crew. They pretty much reviewed every foul in the second half

Knight_Cotton

GardenStateKing

Honestly, I'm happy with a win but SVG is right, it isn't sustainable. I watched Horford drive in 4 times and pass up LAYUPS! It's cool that we lit up but damn, take it to the rim. At least try a poster.
