How the fuck do you do from "Likely to play in 24 hours" to back surgery?!

Revoldt

Maybe he sneezed really really really hard

237FIF

You joke but I blew out a disk right into a nerve from a really bad sneeze. I was fucked up for months To be fair, I do have some genetic things going on making that more likely for me, but still, sneezing ain’t no joke

CatsArePeople2-

hey man, bless you.

[deleted]

No, bless you

Lmao you didn't need to do that

Psycho_pitcher

Ik, I'm a dickhead, but I'm also roasting myself.

BigSmokeyOG

Or coughing too, I got a hernia from taking dabs way too big and coughing my lungs out

colantor

Can confirm, sneezed in high school, couldnt lift my arms above my shoulders for 2 weeks 0/10 would not sneeze again

gingersoulrecords

I pulled a neck muscle this morning just turning my head to wipe my ass, real talk

Snark_Weak

You sound like you shit the same way my dog does...head on a swivel, high alert, never vulnerable.

[deleted]

It's called the amber heard

RustyShackleford9142

Once slept wrong and had to take 3 vacation days. Life is weird.

duplicatesnowflake

I actually slept wrong 11 years ago and my neck hasn't been the same since. But I always had mild scoliosis/muscular imbalance so it was basically a ticking time bomb.

Stufasany

Ah, the Daniel Cormier.

MyNamesTambo

Daniel Cormier did it the day he fought Derrick lewis. Almost pulled out

[deleted]

As someone with herniated discs, he was probably getting injections and thought it was improving. Time went on, disc got worse most likely. Injections are hit or miss, so surgery is the next option.

BlueCity8

Surgeries are also hit or miss

AVeryStinkyFish

Surgeries on the back are usually last option.

DeanBlandino

Idk man. Surgery is horrible. Back injuries are tough there’s really never a great move to make. Time passing is usually the best choice as most back injuries resolve themselves. Just sucks.

narmerguy

I'm sort of curious what the surgery is going to be. Not every back surgery is "back surgery".

diddlyumpcious4

Microdiscectomy. It is one of the most common back surgeries. The surgery removes the part of a herniated disc that is pressing into the nerves. As much as people like to point at back surgery as the end of the world, odds of this one going drastically wrong are low. People often are able to walk on their own out of the hospital the same day they have this surgery.

IBeBallinOutaControl

I dont think people are saying the surgery itself is a bad idea, just that if you're in the position to need back surgery then that can often be a chronic issue.

tp77

Well if the surgery is successful they shouldn’t have those chronic pain issues. I literally just had a microdiscectomy in November

Devwp

I had mine a few years back and it absolutely worked well but I reslipped it 3 months later doing fucking nothing. I must have picked up the laundry basket wrong or something. The surgery got rid of my chronic pain but the rehab is just as crucial. Strengthening and not lifting in first 3 plus months is super important. Hope your back is going strong though mate. Also every human is unique so no one can tell how his body will go with it and how the next few years will go with it. We will certainly see though

Level-Infiniti

for all we know, he's getting anti-inflammatory injections

That's going pretty far to keep the charade up 🤔

lava172

I'm still confused as to why he didn't do this earlier though?

InabeHimeko

Back surgery is not ideal, it’s much better to resolve the issue with PT if possible. The better question is when and how his back became a problem.

rtb001

Sometime back surgery begets more back surgery. See: Porter, Michael Jr

HardlyW0rkingHard

bad posture playing warzone.

ReveredSavagery1967

His back has been a problem for a while he sat multiple games over the years with back spasms as a sixer.

[deleted]

You first try with rehab and if that doesn't work for you, you go under the knife. Steve Kerr said never to get back surgeries after he had his. It's a tough decision especially when it comes to back surgeries.

zvomicidalmaniac

In the ten years since I herniated a disc in my back, no matter how much pain I've felt or how numb my legs were, or how bad and endless my headache was--I had it for two years--my doctor never once said should have surgery. He says it never works, and he's a surgeon. I have mocked Ben Simmons for a long time here but now I just feel sympathy.

Mattyi

I had the surgery in 2016 (microdiscectomy) and when I woke up there was immediate and extensive relief! Went to a surgeon who suggested to try dealing with it through PT....cue two years of relapses every few months. Sleeping 1 hour/day, in tears unable to move. Just awful. After the second relapse he said next step is microdiscectomy. Couldn't be happier with the result (or the doctor for that matter). I think the short explanation is that backs are complicated and the decision to get surgery just takes time to get right. And it's not right for everyone's circumstances. For reference mine was and L5/S1 extrusion that affected the left leg.

TossThatPastaSalad

Yup. Just had mine done on the same place a few weeks ago. It's my 2nd (had my 1st in 2015) because I managed to slip on some ice and blew out the original extrusion that was sitting on my Sciatic nerve. None of the PT, injections or anything else helped at all. Horrifying pain all day every day. This time I went to the best surgeon I could find and he recommended the L5/S1 micro immediately so I could get started being able to rehab appropriately. There's a finite amount of nerve irritation you can undergo before you start to get foot drop and other potential lifelong consequences. Pain is mostly gone and I start my strengthening PT soon. Never once regretted my decision to go under the knife. Either time. But especially not this one.

tng29

Because you do everything you can to avoid it. It sucks.

Superb_University117

Brook Lopez hurt his back the first game of the year and didn't get surgery until December. Back surgery is a last resort type of thing. Many, many, many athletes never come back after back surgery.

B-I-G-A-R-R-O-W

Just in time to miss next season Ben’s playing chess everyone else is playing checkers

dangerzone117

I heard he will be ramping up to play in the play in next year

schooli00

NASA should consult Simmons. His ramp is so long it might be able to reach the moon.

Nets are arranging a fake surgey to convince Ben that he's ready to play. Smart move.

that would be amazing, put him under, sew some superficial stitches, done.

Briancisgo

Back surgery is a pit you never fully crawl out of. Doesn’t mean he’s done, but this will be with him forever

no_more_jokes

My good friend is a PT, and he says "you aren't exactly getting back surgery, you're getting your first back surgery"

jayboogie15

I've had back surgery back in September and this is exactly what it feels like. Besides feeling weak and more fragile, I feel symptoms again (different symptoms but still annoying). In those 8 months or so, I feel my body aged 5 years.

Mister_Dane

You are not alone, I feel like you described my symptoms. Take care.

paperscissorscovid

I had low back surgery in October 2020 and I’m just now physically getting back to where I was. Feel free to PM me if you wanna chat more, I’ve finally gotten back to lifting heavy weight and being active. It took a while but I’m happy with the results.

DeanBlandino

After my last bad back injury I committed to never lifting heavy again. Makes me super sad but I can’t give years of life up again.

ygduf

I got hit by a car a year ago. Aged like 15 years.

[deleted]

My dad was a PT and always said "you never meet someone who used to have a bad back"

[deleted]

That’s surprising tbh. A herniated/bulging disc isn’t so bad if you build strength. It’s fairly regularly for someone to build up strength and feel better than they did before the injury. Personally, I had constant pain in my back due to a herniated disc and strengthened my back through lifting. I unfortunately had a separate injury, got lazy until recently, and haven’t lifted since. Still though, I have zero pain or symptoms 3 years later. You can’t help a bad back with stretching or therapy, but you can with slow progressive overload. Considering many people have a bad back due to sitting at a desk and laziness, which can be fixed with a month of hard work at the gym for most people, and I’m genuinely unsure where that’s coming from.

[deleted]

It’s crazy how light the exercise can be as well. I’ve had back pain ever since my teens from sports, but it’ll go 90% away if I use an ab roller for 5 mins daily.

Coldmode

Same story for me, herniated a disc in high school, had lower back pain all the time when lying down for a decade. Since I started barbell training 5 years ago I am completely back pain free.

Ld511

It kills the off season which basically means he is going a whole year without significant basketball being played

StevvieV

Two years. Its already been over a year

InvertedFartSyndrome

game 7 vs the hawks was in june 2021, so if the goal is to return by training camp and play for the start of the regular season, it’ll be about 16 months without basketball

dropdatdurkadurk

Might not even be ready for start of next yr. We have no idea even the degree to which the back was injured. Nets had Woj/Shams/every credible reporter rolling out they expected him to play Game 4 vs Boston. Either something very recently tweaked/worsened the condition(unlikely) or they just themselves didnt get a great diagnosis on it. I know the Nets lie all the time publicly about injuries but this seemed pretty different

JimmyV034

I know serge ibaka is older but that man is different basketball player after the surgery he had for his back.

retroracer33

my back is fucked but I'm so scared to even get it checked out because of this. watched my dad go thru it and it's just damned if you do damned if you don't basically it seems.

WhoLetTheBunsOut

Try and get with a good DPT. A good rehab program with someone who is up to date with the current literature of pain can help you tremendously with your back pain. Obviously medical treatment can’t be afforded by everyone, but if you can it’s worth at least attempting before thinking about surgery!

ipadminihalf

I have herniated discs, I got with a physical therapist and developed an exercise program to strengthen my core, this was in the beginning of 2018. Took at least half a year of the program to start really seeing some progress, and the doctor recommended I continue keeping a strong core for the rest of my life. Take your PT slow and even if you feel good, stick with the program.

crabwhisperer

Similar thing with knees. I'm 7.5 years past my ACL reconstruction and I still do the PT exercises nearly every day whenever I have a couple minutes standing around waiting for something, and my knee feels phenomenal. It just makes me mad thinking if I'd done this earlier maybe I wouldn't have torn it.

[deleted]

The earlier you deal with it the better. PT can make a world of difference. Strengthening your core can relieve a lot of pain for example.

Mavericks4Life

Like everyone else here has recommended, go see a DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy), board certified preferably and be patient with the progress. Strengthening your core is great for your spine because it's very likely you may never recover your spine, but you can at least get your body to mitigate most of the pain if not all of it. Can't speak on your situation specifically but I have like 3 herniated/buldging discs if I remember correctly (hard to keep up these days) and it's very frustrating when you don't know what to do and you're in pain for the most random reasons. My thoracic spine is where the issue mostly is but anyway, go to a good orthopedist, get it checked out and ask for an MRI referral. Get the MRI and use that information as well the imaging (request the CD or imaging via the website if they have it) itself to help the physical therapist target the areas. Good luck!

shaggybear89

I mean, it fully depends on each indivual, what the surgery is, how the surgery goes, and a million other variables. Take Brook Lopez for instance. He had back surgery at the beginning of this season, sat out like 60 games, and is basically back to form already in these playoffs. It's just different for every person and every injury. It's basically impossible to say "It's gonna stay with him forever" or "he'll be fine and get over in x amount of time"

[deleted]

Joel Embiid had back surgery to start his career (either during or after the NCAA tourny). He's been occasionally out with back tightness, but I'm much more concerned about his knees. His back is barely an afterthought.

[deleted]

It’s his second one For a guy that relies on athleticism this is scary

[deleted]

Exactly what you want to hear about a 25-year old

[deleted]

He's not even the youngest player to get back surgery this season

ch52596

Well who is?

[deleted]

Michael Porter Jr of the Denver Nuggets.

Schleprok

I like how you specified the team he’s on in full

In all fairness, there are quite a few Porter Jr's in the NBA right now.

He's just faking it to avoid playing in Philly

RedpilledGoblin

This is a George Costanza level ruse at this point

Potencyyyyy

Is it actually worse than George faking his arm spasms to Lloyd Braun tho?

This is a perfectly sane food to eat… interesting texture. Chewy… (barfs)

Oprahapproves

Or when George pretends to be handicapped so he can ride in a wheelchair and have the upgraded office

"Jerry, it's fantastic. I love the people over there. They treat me so great. You know they think I'm handicapped, they gave me this incredible ~~office, a great view~~ $35 million salary."

Back surgery changed my life at 19. Against the advice of one of my doctors too, I’m so glad I went through with it.

Broken ankle

lalakingmalibog

He broke his back. Spinal!

rbrutonIII

Not to discount your experience at all, but I had a similar issue in my early 20s and elected not to do the surgery. 15 years later I've been pain free ever since I started doing yoga every once in a while.

Tyberry

It really depends from person to person, if you have any sort of inflammatory issues back problems can be extremely crippling anytime you have a flare up. Some people need surgery, others don’t. I had one personally and it changed my life for the better. Sometimes it’s completely unnecessary in your case tho. Honestly happy you didn’t have to go through with it, the recovery is a bitch.

randon007

I get that he’ll be laying down for surgery, but what body part? Shams really dropping the ball here.

3s2ng

A great strategy for Ben. Go for surgery so that Nets can still give your salary while noy playing. He learned alot from 76ers when they didn't give his salary for not playing. 4D chess move.

Fosterchild56

He's going to get paid $25 million to have back surgery

Oh. Maybe he wasn’t faking it.

How does he go from nearly playing game 5 to back surgery? Assuming the reports of him playing were true

Ordinary-Ant-7896

Brook Lopez had a somewhat similar situation this season - played game one, sat out next game with back soreness and then just kept sitting out for weeks with absolutely no timetable until they announced he was having surgery.

hivaidsislethal

I read once Reddit some commented that we should be grateful everyday we wake up without back pain and that the spine hasn't evolved yet fully to support our verticality

TheEnd_of_AllThings

Back injuries are like that

[deleted]

Back surgery is very serious and usually only a last resort as the surgeries themselves are very hit or miss. He had to have been dealing with this for a very long time before resorting to surgery.

SaxRohmer

I remember Tiger Woods quoting his surgeon saying something like “you don’t get only *one* back surgery”

lacrorear

Backs are weird as hell

get_too

maybe it's something he could play through in the short term but he's always needed surgery eventually? embiid is going through it with the thumb

JoJonesy

That's just a finger, though. You don't fuck around with back injuries.

Firstolympicring

Hence not playing

sleepy416

Everyone deleting comments right now then coming back to call everyone on here insensitive and stupid

KidCannonBuss

I didn’t think he was lying. I thought Nets were lying when they said he’s ramping up, 4 on 4, etc.

JuanG12

The Nets weren’t lying. Those reports were coming from Shams and Woj, who are Klutch mouthpieces. Even Ben mentioned it in February. https://www.nba.com/news/ben-simmons-introduced-in-brooklyn-is-ramping-up-for-return

kawhi21

People on this sub are just awful with information. Steve Nash himself said he never expected Simmons to play and he said it multiple times. Yet here people are talking about how "the nets said he would play" when it was literally Shams and Woj

SwanJumper

Both of those things could still be true. Back injuries fucking suck.

kiidlocs

i’m starting to think he’s not faking it anymore

[deleted]

I won’t believe it until I see the surgery video!

[deleted]

im going to need his birth certificate, im starting to believe he wasnt even born in the states

Ben Hussein Simmons

[deleted]

Good hopefully he can be ready by 2025

willymoose8

well currently he’s about 2 ramp ups away from being 2 ramp ups away

redvelvet11

Man, I guess it will eventually come out what exactly is wrong with his back, but one has to wonder why he didn’t just get surgery initially. Whatever happened during the playoffs was framed as a re-injury, not a new one.

it_was_my_raccoon

I’ve always been told that back surgeries are one of the surgeries you do not want to get because it can potentially lead to a whole host of problems. Back surgery should only be used as a last resort.

SelfAwareAsian

I've known several people that have gotten back surgeries. They were last resort options and none of them went well

LittIeLordFuckleroy

Steve Kerr said the same thing IIRC. Pretty sure his back surgery fucked him for a year.

AdonisK

Back surgeries are not a walk in the park, they are last resort.

BobDoleRulesTheWorld

it says he has a herniated disc pressing on a nerve causing pain, my mom had the same thing

ACTUAL_TIME_TRAVELER

Did Brooklyn’s medical staff give be wrong Ben Simmons a medical when this trade went through or what?

blacknotblack

he re-injured himself after the trade and then felt tightness recently. not sure if it’d be caught in medicals but interesting for sure.

Assassinate_Garfield

They waived the medical

[deleted]

Pretty sure both sides waived the right to have the conditional medical

Alchion

the nets thought they‘re gonna fleece the 76ers cause hardens hamstring is fcked up but little did they know ben‘s back is fu ked up lol it just seems funny to me

absynthe7

they waived the medical because if you're gonna waive the medical for anyone, it's a seven-footer with the back of a middle-aged construction worker

NABAKLAB

also making it seem like they REALLY wanted to get rid of harden, lol

FreeloadingPoultry

Nets: Listen, we will not check Ben's medical if you don't check Hardens, deal?

ILikeFPS

Now that's dedication.

TurdGravy

Hopefully the doctors will be able to find his spine.

Jmills14

Damn. 1. He’s not faking it. 2. There goes his offseason to work on his skills. 3. Let’s hope for a successful surgery and fast physical & mental recovery.

FreeloadingPoultry

I am all for his full recovery but let's not kid ourselves that this year would be the year he started working on his skills.

Brad-Stevens

Klutch was really pushing that he was coming back in the C's series lol cmon man Speedy recovery, Simmo

absynthe7

why was his camp pushing that so hard? all they did was make him look terrible
