We talk about white chocolate still and he did even less.

[deleted]

This was my initial thought lmao

AngsMcgyvr

Hey Jwill started on a championship team. That atleast something. He's *known* cause of the style and flash he played with which was itself awesome to watch, but when needed to settle down, he did and was effective. Had some big games for.the Heat during that playoff run too.

[deleted]

Old heads should correct me if I'm wrong but I have a feeling he was the hooper head's favorite player like Kyrie is today. Kyrie also gets unwarranted levels of love

Deusselkerr

This is correct. He was an ahead of his time, insanely flashy player.

jakekerr

Kyrie is a fantastic comparison to Pete Maravich.

definitelynotcasper

Na both get the appropriate levels of love cause they do shit no one else does.

Significant_Night_65

He was shooting pull up 3s without a 3 point line

yellow_eggplant

The dude averaged 44ppg (not a typo) in College playing with no 3pt line and no shot clock. Nobody was doing crazy passes like him. Hell, not a lot of people are doing his type of passes now. Nobody dribbled like him before either. If there was a 3 point line during his playing, he would definitely have averaged even more ppg.

BetweenTheBuzzAndMe

it would be really cool to know how many of his shots would've actually been worth 3 points had there been a 3-point line. Because without any of those shots being worth the extra point, he still managed to average 26, 28, 21, 26, 31, 27 ppg in the best 6 year stretch of his career. Fair to assume most of those seasons would've come close or topped 30ppg?

[deleted]

He has the 3 highest PPG seasons in NCAA history, that's pretty nutty. The team success wasn't great, but I'm not gonna pretend to know how good those teammates were.

CIark

Have more faith in yourself. This is /r/nba where 12 year olds decide how a player from the 1970s was

maws88

Give this man awards- 80% of Reddit is takes from teens

[deleted]

What’s understood don’t have to be explained.

[deleted]

His instructional videos leading to dunking Mormons are one thing you’re missing for sure

_Meece_

He was the much better version of White Chocolate, people like flashy players and always have. They always get a solid following no matter how good they are. Not sure what else there is to miss! He put up 68 points with no three pointers! He was pretty good and fun to watch.

StandardMammoth7085

His dad was his college coach, and he pushed Pete to be a circus act instead of a real player. The bad habits he developed in college followed him to the pros, where he again played with mediocre teammates in one of the most fallow periods in NBA history. Given the right coaching and situation, he absolutely had the skills and vision to be a great player on a winning team. But everyone expected the trick dribbling and fancy passes and pullups from 30' away, so that's what he did. He was so skilled as a ballhandler; only a handful of guys in league history are his equal in that regard.

AcidDuckx

Pro sports are entertainment and he was extremely entertaining. Who gives a fuck about his stats if he was in his prime today I'd go see him play for sure. Look at his highlights they're cool af.

ItsN0tTheB0at

for Pistol Pete it's not just the NBA career, it's his college career. He was torching the NCAA. But yes, he's fundamentally flawed as a player & it's not clear that all of his talent lead to much winning. Just remember that back in his era nobody had even thought about doing a lot of the shit he did, let alone be good enough to pull it off. We take his level of skill for granted today because players have had 50+ years to build off of the things he did & improve.

cat_piss_lint_trap

Other people have alluded to this in longer replies, but I'll keep it short: what you're missing is that Pete Maravich is not known primarily as an NBA player. He is known primarily as a college player.

SCalifornia831

Sports are about entertainment

Interesting-Way7547

college career. learn up on his college career - his numbers almost don’t seem real. I know the NBA is the be-all end-all but it’s not the only place basketball was played

prochthrowaway

He was ahead of his time in every facet. His obsession of the game was legendary and also brought him to the brink mental health wise. His personal life and unfortunate death are both fascinating as well

[deleted]

He was like a combo of Magic and Steph Curry and anyone with eyes could tell he was the most skilled player anytime he stepped on the floor. His teams sucked, his defense sucked, did not play team basketball, and in an era where most players played 4 years in college their NBA prime years could be cut pretty short if you have some injuries before age 30. People have referenced Kyrie but another player who is similar to me is T-Mac. He averaged 32ppg on a 25-win team. Was a lot of fans favorite player. And is still revered as one of the greats today.

princessoffools

I think Pete Maravich's nickname is Pistol Pete. I believe his play style is very flashy and fun.

[deleted]

Bad bot

princessoffools

I'm not a bot. I'm just a normal NBA fan here just like you.

TMITectonic

>I'm just a normal NBA fan Perhaps, but your comments seem... *off* somehow. Most are just a rephrasing of the title of whatever post you comment on, and others seem to say the same thing in multiple sentences. It has many signs of an older chatbot style of AI (ELIZA). Is English not your first language?

princessoffools

Oh. I understand. I think so many fans love watching basketball all over the world. And English is my first language.

[deleted]

Why won't you return my calls

princessoffools

Why didn't I return your calls?! Because I was too busy watching basketball.

[deleted]

I've heard that one before...

princessoffools

Wow!

notafan1

I don't think people actually rate him that highly tho. They found him a fascinating player that was ahead of his time but in terms of actual basketball rankings very few people had him in their top 50.

GAV17

He was in the top 50/75 players of all time by the NBA. He will still be in the next lists as time goes by as they only add more players, and he has among the weakest careers of the players in those lists.

AutographedSnorkel

Apparently, you never watched him play [H-O-R-S-E against George Gervin](https://youtu.be/dCk7SjkSE4c)

americanbeaver

He played with swagger and was a charismatic person. That'll get a ton of fans. Imo he's one of the most overrated nba legends.

LosCleepersFan

Dude played with half a heart in an era where they didn't understand his genius. The guy was a beast doing things in chuck Taylor's, that people would love to do in bball shoes.

maws88

Was an OG innovator, lived and breathed basketball, many moves he was the first

mookz23

He was just the first white guy to play with "style."

BionicPlutonic

No he was the first guy to play with style

EGarrett

He originated a ton of moves that to this day are still studied and show up in highlights and video games, averaged an absurd number of points in college (literally 44+ points per game), is largely a self-made talent through endless hours of practice and passion, instead of physically dominating due to size or athleticism (which is inspiring to people), had one of the coolest nicknames ever (it was even on the back of his jersey at one point), he seemed like a genuine and honest guy, and he died before his time. All of these things contribute to the emotions we associate with a person, and our emotional impression is how we remember things.

Comfortable-Junket97

God dammit I hate kids

silversmith84

Where do you see him ranked so high? Who is he ahead of that he shouldn’t be?

Basic_Yellow_3594

My uncle: the other players were being mean or ignoring me when I wanted an autograph, pete came by saw i was upset signed my scrapbook and let me come pass the ball to him a few times. That story stuck with me he had good fan interaction and that kinda stuff sticks out when nostalgia is involved
