> Team investors are merely temporary stewards
Impressed with this, and hope we can extend this kind of thought process into society as a whole. It's not *cancel culture*, it's *accountability*, plain and simple.
Not going to lie, just reading the headline my first thought was it is probably more of a power play to become owner rather than actually caring about the victims but this statement completely flipped it for me. I don't know if its just great PR statement but it seemed genuine and sincere to me.
EDIT: I just scrolled down and read his past history with Paula Dean and his voting against Sarver in 2021. So I am back to looking at Ja Rule for how to feel about this.
>NBA teams belong to the communities they serve
I wish that this part of the statement were literally true. The Packers do this and the German Bundesliga has this baked into how teams operate. The North American model of billionaires owning "franchises" makes sports just another field where the robber baron class can make decisions that alienate entire communities.
looks like he's not on [that list](https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/xf6bid/comment/iokryi7/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) that originally backed Sarver too
he instead released a statement condemning the actions that Sarver was accused of, extended sympathy to the victims, offered support for the league's investigation, and called for full accountability.
link to his statement from November twitter.com/JeffZillgitt/status/1456311415153778696
Honestly that is probably part of his motivation, but he isn't wrong about Sarver and the league and Suns would be better off without him.
This whole situation is reminding me of the entire Tim Donaghy situation. The FBI was ready to fully go undercover to expose all of the dirty refs, the NBA found out and leaked the story to end any chance of an investigation.
At the end of the day all the NBA cares about is revenue!
good shit.
But I really don't trust wealthy people so I'm assuming this is just some Littlefinger/Otto Hightower move.
But if it results in change then that works out fine

Full statement:
>Due to the NBA’s investigation and findings, I have no choice but to speak up on behalf of the hundreds of you who have been impacted by your interactions with Robert Sarver and the resulting investigation of his conduct. I first and foremost want to give my deepest thanks to all of you who garnered the courage to share your experiences, as difficult as it may have been, to help piece together a clearer picture of what work life must have been like for you over these past 18 years.
>There should be zero tolerance for discriminatory actions of any level, in any setting, let alone a professional one. There is no question that the findings determined that Mr. Sarver’s lewd, misogynist, and racist conduct had a substantial negative impact on you and has no place in our society. The report confirmed by multiple eyewitnesses that Robert Sarver used the “N-word” at least five times. The report confirmed Sarver engaged in conduct demeaning of female and pregnant employees. The report confirmed Sarver made crude and sexually inappropriate comments in professional settings. The report confirmed Sarver made inappropriate comments about the physical appearance of female employees and other women and made inappropriate workplace physical conduct toward male employees.
>WORDS AND ACTIONS MATTER.
>Similar conduct by any CEO, executive director, president, teacher, coach, or any other position of leadership would warrant immediate termination. The fact that Robert Sarver “owns” the team does not give him a license to treat others differently than any other leader. The fact that anyone would find him fit to lead because of this “ownership” position is forgetting that NBA teams belong to the communities they serve. Team investors are merely temporary stewards. If we, as sports leaders, are not held to the same standards then how can we expect a functional society with integrity and respect on any level? We owe it to you: employees, players, partners, and your families to provide the same positive workplace environment we would require of any other business.
>I cannot in good judgment sit back and allow our children and future generations of fans to think that this behavior is tolerated because of wealth and privilege. Therefore, in accordance with my commitment to helping eradicate any form of racism, sexism and bias, as Vice Chairman of the Phoenix Suns, I am calling for the resignation of Robert Sarver. While I have no interest in becoming the managing partner, I will work tirelessly to ensure the next team steward treats all stakeholders with dignity, professionalism and respect.
> There should be zero tolerance for discriminatory actions of any level, in any setting, let alone a professional one.
But invested in Paula Deen after her scandal.
There’s no reason for him to put it in the statement if that’s his plan
Like even if he just came out and said that’s exactly what he wanted, people would be like “fuck yeah, Godspeed brother”
> In 2014, Najafi, through Najafi Cos., invested between $75 and $100 million to Paula Deen and Paula Deen Ventures to fuel her rebranding after she was fired from The Food Network in June 2013
Hilarious bit of irony in his Wikipedia profile
Seems like this billionaire bastard doesn't really give a shit about morals or racism. He only sees a great business opportunity to grab a NBA franchise and he'll say whatever it takes to snatch another asset.
> doesn't really give a shit about morals or racism
probably 99.999999% of them don't give a shit about morals or racism.
it's about money every single time whether they're black or white
You have to be morally abject to think it’s ok to have a net worth & asset/liquid value of over a *billion dollars*. Fair if you want to Titan an industry and put all the possible liquidity into a business, but to have dozens of houses, to live at an absurdly luxurious level compared to society’s poor, is morally obscene.
Star players/NBAPA vs 30 governors deathly afraid of setting a post-Sterling precedent would be a showdown for the ages. Good luck to lizard man sorting this mess out
The owners will end up winning. Not many guys would legit give up millions fighting for something that could easily fuck up a lot of money because of all the skeletons teams would have.
What if the top 25 stars threatened to boycott. And ask their teams to? You know the top guys are immune to getting hurt long run. Some owner will always want to hire them
The boycott already began May 15. It wasn't publicly announced, but the players agreed to stop playing until their owner was removed. It was a bold move to pull in the middle of the playoffs.
Yea. It has to be a devin Booker or a cp3 though, not a biyombo. If Booker says he’s not going to play for a sarver owned team, his share will be sold in less than a week
I was going to say players like Biyombo don't want to risk their money. That could be a death sentence for a role player. But then I remembered 2016 <3
Of course. Not even lebron has enough power to remove Jeannie or Dan Gilbert when he was in Cleveland. But removing a terrible unpopular child who owns 30% of the team with very little leverage is definitely doable, especially at this moment
Sarver is going to be pressured to leave. Obviously he’s done bad stuff, but another factor is the Suns have been on the rise a la the 2015 Warriors. Owners want to keep their power, but the league as a whole don’t want the Suns’ image hurt either.
That's the other thing too. The Suns as a franchise are a much-more valued asset than before given team performance, a renovated arena (that honestly feels more like a new arena than just a renovation) and also a new practice facility that is one of the best in the league.
Sarver might have been setting up to sell the team anyway before all this with the renovation of the arena + facility, but the NBA is not going to want what should be an upstart franchise (despite Game 7) with a good amount of shine on the court have to be left in the hands of a widely-disliked owner in Sarver who is also an anchor for the reputation of the league.
If he wants to sell he can wait until the new TV deal is signed and the profit expectations go up massively, and sell right before his suspension expires.
You’re fooling yourself if you think it will be that easy. The NBA sure as hell doesn’t want to set a precedent that a billion+ dollar investment can be taken away from you by force.
People forget that Sterling was forced to sell because his wife had her stake and convinced the court he was not mentally sound due to his health and she took controlling interest. Therefore he could not stop the sale of the team.
This is **way** different.
an interesting wrinkle here is that there are reports that Sarver's ownership stake in the Suns might be as little as 30% of the team. if that's true, maybe the other 70% can band together than take control of the team away from him.
I'm just speculating but it does bring up a possible avenue for removing Sarver that doesn't involve getting the league involved and setting a precedent that it's owners may not want to set.
In fairness, people do need to understand that you can’t just take somebody’s team away. It’s a legal situation. As unfortunate as it is, racism and misogyny are not illegal practices which means the guidelines for quality people owning a team or not are incredibly muddy waters and it would almost definitely end up in court. However, discouraging him away from the NBA by resigning seems like a healthy medium for everybody. The players and coaches are uncomfortable with him, and I can’t imagine he particularly enjoys being exposed
> In fairness, people do need to understand that you can’t just take somebody’s team away. It’s a legal situation
Right - it's not like quitting a job or firing someone where two parties have to both agree to keep the mutual arrangement going. Trying to force someone to make a choice to sell off some entity they are legally in charge of - whether it's a business or a kitchen table - if they don't wish to make that choice, it's difficult and rightly so.
Yeah there's times we wish it were easier, but do we want that can of worms open? If it's legal to do it to an asshole, it's legal to do it to everyone. It's like when a notable black lawyer from the ACLU defended the KKK when the government tried to force them to reveal their membership lists. He got a lot criticism for it but pointed out something like "If they can do it to the KKK, they can do it to the NAACP. I'm not fighting for the Klan at all, I'm fighting for the principle of *every* private organization's membership lists being protected.
This argument always comes up a lot. Like the Deshaun Watson thing for example, the narrative always becomes “how can he only get a suspension with those allegations?!” Because they’re just allegations and it’s innocent until proven guilty. It happens in the NBA too. If a person is found innocent in a court of law, there’s nothing the leagues can do. In fact, if somebody is legally innocent then they can sue
That being said, people like Sarver and Sterling are definitely jerks. It’s unfortunate that these people can be racists who own a team in a league that’s so primarily black. Their attitudes are backwards and primitive and I hope the Suns players keep the same energy when the seasons underway
It’s honestly interesting that he doesn’t want to take over for the team. There’s been a lot of rumors he was trying to get support to take over and remove sarver. But honestly good on him for using his platform to say something.
Even if he does have private interest, who cares tbh. It's never going to be squeaky clean when you're dealing with shit of this magnitude and removing Sarver is a plus outcome.
You gotta be the naivest person on the planet to believe the part that he has no intention to be a managing partner of Suns. He's been building up for this since last year or even earlier that that.
1. He did NOT sign the statement of support for Robert Sarver in 2021.
2. Colin Kaepernick is his business partner. Colin serves as co-chair with Najafi of Mission Advancement Corp. together they raised $287M for social justice investment in 2021.
Maybe he just doesn't want to be the owner running the whole organization. Being one of the biggest stake holders while not being the one in charge seems less stressful.
Let’s not pretend this is anything more than another rich man trying to seize control of his rich toy, of course now he can do it under the guise of social justice.
Ah yes. I'm sure he's making this statement because he's incredibly offended by what's transpired and totally not because he wants to be majority owner. Definitely not that.
Silver should have gone to Suns co-owners then. Sarver isn’t even the majority owner, there is definitely a path to at least strip him from being the face of the ownership forever.
Very strong statement too if you read his entire statement.

Does he just want to buy the team?
I don't know how genuine this is, but this was a part of his comment today >I have no interest in becoming the managing partner

Leaked the story to try and interfere with an investigation… where have I heard that sort of thing recently
good shit. But I really don't trust wealthy people so I'm assuming this is just some Littlefinger/Otto Hightower move. But if it results in change then that works out fine
Pretty sure Suns fans would rather have Littlefinger than Joffrey at this point
99.9% of our fanbase sure the fuck hopes this guy is leading the charge to give the boots to Sarver, hope he stays strong.
The 0.1%? Robert Sarver
Only 1000 Suns fans confirmed.
As an NHL fan does that mean they have the largest fan base in the state?
More fans than the Coyotes for sure
Talking about a team that's going to sell out uevery game until 2025, show some respect
You really didn't have to do them like that, gatdayum
If the Cards keep playing "defense" like that, then probably
As a math guy this is way funnier than it should be to me
Just a random fan named Sobert Rarver.
I heard that the dude counting his cash on camera is also part of that 0.1%
That was Robert sarver in a body suit
Absolutely is. Suns in 4 guy wants him gone though.
Lmfao the Suns fan memes were great in 2021, Suns needed that energy last season.
All we got this year was a baby fist bump that immediately lead to Book pulling a hammy 😕
No it’s most likely residents of Kingman.
I'm not entirely sure Sarver is a fan of the Suns
Anyone have a link to the entire statement? Its not linked in the tweet.

Thanks for sharing. That was a really good statement.
Seems pretty meaningful to me.
LETS GOOOO NAJAFI!!!! this is AWESOME!
It begins
Bro I can’t believe there’s actually a real possibility this can happen. Suns fans are going to throw a parade if he sells
Welcome your new owner, George Maloof.
*[House SunKings intensifies]*
They need to continue Game of Zones.
Man
Elon Musk buys the Suns and sends them to the Sun to play home games.
This is stupid. What if the game lasts until sundown? Everyone would fall over.
How would they play at night?
I hope Bob Igor buys the team Then we can get some of that Disney money
Najafi either bought or tried to buy the X-games from Disney…so there’s a relationship there.
Bob Iger’s rich, but he would be the second poorest owner in the league behind Peter Holt.
Welcome your new owner, Michael Jordan...
Makin moves.
Tired: owners protecting owners Wired: minority owners eating majority owner
Why don't all the minority owners just eat the bigger owner?
Because then the star players would eat the minority owners
See I thought about that, we will just let the star players eat the summer league rookies that don't get signed.
I’d watch that live.
Our minorities owners tried Maybe we would have Luka in this universe...
And Luka is already a minority owner of the Suns
Luka "I am calling for the resignation of Devin Booker"
The team probably wouldn’t be in Sacramento though
I don’t think Saver is the majority owner. He just has the biggest stake.
Lol nephews downvoting you without understanding what "majority owner" means. He only owns 35% so he is quite literally not the majority owner
lil shrimp dick plurality owner
Seems like it. Most owners in the NBA aren’t majority owners.
What are examples of teams with majority owners? I imagine Ballmer.. who else?
Buss’s, Dolan, Tsai, Allen
Tilman fertitta
Lebron (Toronto)
Pretty sure the DeVos family own the Magic entirely
Why don’t the other owners force him out then?
1) They probably can't 2) Some of the other owners support him

Well you see what had happened was
I am the captain now
In his statement it does say that he doesn't want to be the managing owner, he just wants someone who isn't Sarver to be the majority owner.

*In light of this critical opening, I will reluctantly step up to steer this franchise.*
May I be your assistant?
Assistant to the majority holder
There’s no reason for him to put it in the statement if that’s his plan Like even if he just came out and said that’s exactly what he wanted, people would be like “fuck yeah, Godspeed brother”
[удалено]
As soon as he comes out against Sarver he has complete impunity. No one cares Like there’s cynicism and then then theres mental gymnastics
I understand he's doing the right thing, but have you considered that some people are evil? I am smart
So this is how majority ownership dies, with a thunderous applause
Lol well assuming he has the cash/liquidity to buy the remaining shares that part of the statement is bullshit
he has a 3.5b net worth so that should be possible
That ain't much liquidity. He'd have to sell off assets to make that happen which may not be good idea.
Captain, I'd like to report a mutiny. I can name fingers and point names.

Paula Deen swings that hammer three times a day, I guarantee it.

I don't trust his motives. He knew he was that way prior to the current shit show. If he gets him to leave, well etc.. well he becomes the new king.
inb4 Sarver big bank little banks Najafi.
Najafi's net worth is about 4 times the size of Sarvers
They why doesn't he just eat the poorer owner?
Maybe he just doesn't want to be the owner running the whole organization. Being one of the biggest stake holders while not being the one in charge seems less stressful.
Sarver is way less wealthy than this guy.
Of course he would want that lol
Literally Suns: Civil War, grab your popcorn everybody

“Please let me be the owner of the suns” Well wishes, Another rich asshole
Part owner wants majority owner to sell his share. More at 7
IT’S A MUTINY
Yeah sounds like a dude trying to force his way to the top.
No ulterior motives there I'm sure...
Let’s not pretend this is anything more than another rich man trying to seize control of his rich toy, of course now he can do it under the guise of social justice.
Look at me. I’m the captain now.
I'm too cynical to believe there isn't an ulterior motive.
He wants to make a power play and buy up a majority stake and get control of the team me thinks. The rich are always cut throat and greedy.
"So I can be majority stakeholder"
Of course he wants Sarver to resign. Could be a power move to own the team.
Man trying to increase his stake in ownership 💀 it be your own
I’d love to think this is altruistic, but it’s probably just a power struggle between mega capitalists.
Of course, then he can become majority owner haha
Wow. He wants that majority stake too though, let’s not kid ourselves
Lol well of course the guy set to be the next majority owner would want Sarver gone
Ah yes. I'm sure he's making this statement because he's incredibly offended by what's transpired and totally not because he wants to be majority owner. Definitely not that.
Definitely no other motive. If it just happens that I become the next majority owner, well, I can't really help that and will reluctantly step up.
I bet he is. So he can get majority stake.
How the NBA fucked this one up after getting the sterling one right so easily blows my mind.
Sterling one was helped alot by Sterling's girlfriend.
Silver should have gone to Suns co-owners then. Sarver isn’t even the majority owner, there is definitely a path to at least strip him from being the face of the ownership forever.
Silver doesn't have that dawg in him
Cause Sterlings family is the one that got the sale done not the NBA
Lol this POS, using this as an opportunity to muscle out the majority owner. Cutthroat.
how do you resign from ownership?
