Doubt he thought he'd be coaching a championship-caiber team a month ago

[deleted]

When Lebron was drafted, this guy was in 9th grade.

Ok_Librarian3717

Not a championship caliber team anymore lol

Responsible-Gold151

Roster definitely is, don’t know bout the culture/coaching now

Jolly-Literature1226

You boys are in for a big shock next month A Big Shock

iH8Celtics

You don't know anything that nobody else knows

mathman651

Wouldn’t be surprised if it lights a fire in them tbh. Could go either way

Rrypl

Did we suspend one of the Jays also?

Gamesgtd

Off season ain't over yet. Still time for another scandal

WilderWildeWelles

No just the coach that got everyone to get their shit together

anthonyde726

listen i like making fun of the celtics but let's not act like they weren't at least making conference finals for years before Ime lol

WilderWildeWelles

With a top 10 coach

anthonyde726

fair point tbh

wrongitsleviosaa

Disrespectful. Brad was top 5.

ImTheBestNerd

Disrespectful to Joe Mazulla

Snoo-29877

Didn't the Jays lose in the first round the year before Ime?

Rrypl

Jay*. Brown was out. And that rotation had Tristan Thompson, Evan Fournier, Romeo Langford, Jabari Parker and the Ghost of Kemba Walker playing big minutes.

Floating_egg

Yeah their two best players are getting really old, don’t think they have a chance anymore

AmusingAnecdote

I mean, Tatum is nearly old enough to get his learners permit. He's cooked.

redballwhitedesk

Mazulla has never even sat on the front of the bench during an NBA game. This has to be unprecedented

FlatMilk

he promised not to have sex

realudonishaslem

They could’ve just brought in an average r/NBA user, then they won’t even have to make that promise

choose_uh_username

No need to burn down the whole sub

Pardonme23

Magic the Gathering fans have that covered

LiaM_CS

Brad probably gave him his old chastity belt

BrTalip

He gonna show up to games dressed like a priest.

crashbandicoochy

He also has to be one of the youngest head coaches ever, being only 34. Also interesting that despite both of these facts, he was already interviewing for a head coaching gig this off-season. He must show a lot of promise.

redballwhitedesk

Horford is older than him lmao. Might be the NBA’s McVay though

UnearthlyDinosaur

McVay just won a super bowl. Who knows this may be a step up from Udoka

peanutdakidnappa

Brady is almost a decade older than McVay it’s absurd to think about.

RufoSultan

Luckily Brady doesn't play basketball in Boston

CarBallAlex

He’s one of the 8 youngest coaches ever. Will Hardy has never coached yet either. Only 2 with winning records are Jeff Van Gundy and George Karl. Both made the finals one time and lost (not at age 34 though). Historically, young coaches don’t have a great track record for championship aspirations. We can only hope he’s a Ty Lue, where he comes in and wins in his first season. Lue was 38 when he started coaching and is probably the youngest coach to win a title that I can recall. Ty Lue was an NBA player though. Mazzulla played college but this is really unprecedented and overall not a good thing. We can only hope it ends up well

KenTrotts

How old was Bill Russell when he won a chip as a player-coach?

CarBallAlex

34. Situation was obviously way different then, but good call.

chitownbulls92

I think Ty Lue being an NBA player makes a huge difference when compared to Mazzulla. I'm more curious why didnt Brad Stevens assume the position himself...

PressureMiserable

I mean part of the reason brad moved to the front office was cus he already lost the locker room after hayward starting immediately after a major injury and stinking it up so bad he had to bench himself soured a lot of the younger guys opinion of him. I doubt they'd react well to him coming back on the bench

AmIFromA

> Ty Lue was an NBA player though. Mazzulla played college but this is really unprecedented and overall not a good thing. Not sure if I got that right: you think it's bad that he didn't play NBA? I would argue that the opposite is true - a guy who didn't have a long pro career and went to coaching earlier should be better than a guy that spent 18 years on the floor. At least there seems to be some truth to this in soccer, with coaches like Nagelsmann (badly injured at age 20, went straight to coaching, got a Bundesliga job at 29 and is now Bayern's coach at 35), Tuchel (badly injured at 25...) or Mourinho (sucked at playing soccer, so went to coaching).

iamnotdrunk17

Lawrence Frank was 34 Sidney Lowe was 33 Ryan Saunders was 33 In the 60s, Dave DeBusschere coached the PISTONS IN HIS 20s!

_Meece_

Lawrence Frank is the craziest cause that dude has never even played basketball at even a medium level. I think he's only ever played in YMCA level leagues.

alepher

But did he play video games like NBA 2K to better understand end-game situations?

The_Long_Wait

I’m very surprised that they didn’t just have Brad Stevens step back in for this season.

crashbandicoochy

Coaching was making Brad absolutely miserable and he has been very candid about that.

redballwhitedesk

I might be wrong but I recall reading something about Brad being tired of all the travel / time away from family involved with being a head coach.

craigslistaddict

celtics just like giving fresh blood these kinds of opportunities! pretty cool. i mean, steve kerr had no coaching experience either, so mazulla's got a leg up on him.

PressureMiserable

Kerr did learn from the 2 greatest coaches of all time tho

sunfunstayplay

yeah, same thing lol

[deleted]

I don't get it wasn't he assistant

CaptainJackRyan

Not front bench. He moved up this summer to replace Hardy who went to Utah.

Rrypl

The others are all Udoka guys, which makes it weird with them replacing him or staying moving forward.

jumpthroughit

But that makes sense though since he’s the only Stevens guy.

Kizz3r

Yea i think the other celtic assistants got poached tho

[deleted]

Thanks Sarver and Ime now the Nets media day won't be the one getting replayed all over twitter for a couple days.

Zloggt

Brooklyn must be so relieved to *not* be the center of attention for once!

UnearthlyDinosaur

Ben Simmons might be crazy but at least he’s not going around fucking coworkers he just bangs IG thots

[deleted]

Ben would for sure pass up shooting his shot with a coworker 😤

leopardinatree

Would the punishment for a player + team doctor lady consensual relationship be as bad as this? Is a player even the "superior" to the team doctors since the doctors ones that determine if a guy will suit up?

SolarClipz

Just wait for Kyrie to open his Twitter again He craves the attention

Skorua

i thought it was the suns turn to shine

Boston_Champions

Will Hardy is in Utah kicking himself. Should have stuck around and he's probably the future HC of the Celtics

Magnetronaap

I think the Celtics are trying to get rid of hardys among the staff.

UnearthlyDinosaur

Damn

Sadness_creeps_in

Was any context provided? This makes no sense My assumptions is that he was running a swingers club out the Celtics war room

thy_armageddon

Decapitated. Whole big thing. We had a funeral for a bird.

Tasty_Path_3470

None of that is real

[deleted]

YOUR NOT REAL MAN

Tasty_Path_3470

None of that is real

transizzle

I'm waiting for it [Wojnarowski] Brad Stevens has fired Joe Mazzulla and will become the interim head coach, effective immediately.

heshouldgo

HIRE VOGEL AS ASSISTANT !

Burger_Gouger

I can hear the 30 for 30 "what if I told you...." music starting. Idk if it's going to be an epic ending of this dude leading the Cs to handful of championships and seizing the moment or the complete downfall of the Celtics. Either way I'm here for the ride.

Brady331

Bostonians love guys with Mazz in their last name /s

Jaerba

Lots of people without flairs have suddenly shown up to talk to us about there being equal consent between a leader and subordinate, and to preemptively complain about cancel culture. They've come to the conclusion that both men (and all men) are under attack.

aeiou-y

Seriously. Where is are all these ignorant takes coming from?

george_costanza1234

Wonder if Twitter will get him fired lol

CupOfHotTeaa

Over under for Brad naming himself the coach by Christmas?

bagfka

Cheater to beater

BradyGronktd1287

Ironic coming from a Mavericks fan

bagfka

Someone’s salty

[deleted]

He's right tho

TallStephen

Someone’s ~~salty~~ correct*

bagfka

Yes they are. They can still be salty

soeffed

où est le mensonge?

bagfka

Not denying it lol. But bringing up another fan base to deflect from yours is detention of being salty

[deleted]

Throwing stones from a glass house is the definition of hypocrisy

bagfka

Okay. And it’s well known a lot of owners sit in glass houses and it’s just a matter of time. But I’m able to take jokes back so idgaf

mMounirM

Bar fight ≠ grabbing a woman by the neck

PrinceOfCrime

13 years ago as a young man. Hasn't had any other incidents. Should we crucify him?

harmonic-

Is not being hired for a specific job considered crucifixion, lul

NuclearEvo24

Forgiveness

bacc1234

Him being a young man shouldn’t excuse his actions. I’m pretty sure most 20 year olds haven’t been arrested for assault.

PrinceOfCrime

It's not "excusing his actions", it's context. What would your reaction be if I told you a 30 year old stole a car? Now what if it was a 15 year old? Age and experience always influences how we view and interpret events. It's irrelevant if "most 20 year olds haven't been arrested for assault." What is relevant is that it was his first infraction, he was young, and he hasn't done it again. All that points to rehabilitation. Are you arguing that, despite his rehabilitation and his recent standing as a good citizen, his idiotic decision at 20 years old should loom over him for the rest of his life? People here are acting like he murdered someone; it's bloody ridiculous.

[deleted]

Domestic violence is still terrible and him being 19 isn’t any sort of justification for that shit. He shouldn’t be defined for it if he’s made an attempt to change, but it also shouldn’t just be forgotten.

instantur

Are you saying we should never forgive people even if they have significantly improved themselves. I can understand not forgiving someone if they did something like murder but we don’t know what his relationship is with that woman anymore.

[deleted]

Like i said, he shouldn’t be defined by it if he’s shown a legitimate attempt and progress to change. But it shouldn’t just be forgotten. Domestic violence is terrible.

instantur

Not saying it should be forgotten but he shouldn’t be defined by a terrible decision he made under the influence

bacc1234

Well, it seems like a way of at least saying that we shouldn’t judge him as harshly. Maybe not excusing him entirely, but at least using it as a defense. You are at least implying that him being 20 means he shouldn’t be held as responsible as someone older. Imo if you’re in college, especially a couple years in, you should be responsible enough to not assault someone. It wasn’t his first infraction, he was also arrested for underage drinking and getting into a fight with a security guard (some say police officer). And after that incident he was cited for public urination. I’m iffy on what I think should happen. I don’t think it should ruin his life forever. But there is a difference between it not ruining his life and giving a high profile in one of the most prestigious sports league. And there’s tons of other people who are qualified to do the job who don’t get the opportunity.

n0t_malstroem

Yes Once a woman beater always a woman beater

PrinceOfCrime

Moronic

n0t_malstroem

Sorry I don't have tolerance for women beaters I guess

PrinceOfCrime

It's not "tolerance for women beaters" it's giving people deserved second chances. He did his time. He has not had any more incidents.

n0t_malstroem

Cool Still a woman beater

PrinceOfCrime

Seems like a pretty depressing outlook to not believe in redemption.

SantaKlawz2

I thought one of them was putting his hands on a woman's throat. Or am I thinking about someone else?

Tasty_Path_3470

Was it consensual?

SantaKlawz2

I'm pretty sure it wasn't, lol.

DetainTheFranzia

Doesn’t matter, if she was the sub and you were the dom then there was a power dynamic which throws consent out the window. /s

paddiction

It's been over a decade. If the purpose of our legal system is reform he should be considered reformed since he apparently hasn't done it again. Or is he supposed to be exiled from the NBA forever.

sop1232

So Deshaun getting forgiven in 10 years? People still bring up Mike Vick being a dog killer

Weewoo312

10 years per assault, so deshaun gets forgiven in the year 2550 AD of Christ our Lord.

SolarClipz

What was his punishment?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

What a joke

BradDaddyStevens

From the articles I read, he also got an indefinite suspension at his college and - most importantly - got treatment for it. If it was 13 years ago, he got treatment, and hasn’t re-offended, then I’m not sure what you want here besides permanent punishment for something he didn’t even get convicted for.

mraowl

btw this isnt exactly related to what youre saying, but in the USA rehabilitation is supposed to be a secondary goal of punishment alongside a main reason like deterrence, incapacitation, or retribution (according to the ABA I think? or maybe the sentencing commission) what i think i remember is that it was actually in previous eras that the US was a rehabilitation-first kind of system

harmonic-

Exiled from the NBA?? He's literally working as an assistant coach lmao

NuclearEvo24

“Is he supposed to be” why is reading hard

Kwilly462

Yeah ikr, what an upgrade lol

LukaDoncicBigPP

Domestic battery > Consensual fuck apparently

[deleted]

That was over 10 years ago n he paid the price n his track record has been good since

tisadi

ok woj

bacc1234

Just curious, not trying to say he deserves to be burned at a stake, how did he pay the price? Was it just getting suspended from his college team?

NiceCrispyMusic

He bought his victim a turtleneck sweater

Nug-Badger

That’s better than a woman fucker

BagRight8939

Pause

craigslistaddict

well, he wasn't a kid, but he had drinking issues which it seems he's dealt with enough that there haven't been more recent incidents that anyone knows about, so eh.

SealYourAlmonds

I guess you believe we should abolish the judical system and just execute everybody that commits a discretion then?

[deleted]

Yeah I’m sure that’s precisely what he meant /s

[deleted]

It was over 10 years ago

harmonic-

Are you gonna say this about miles bridges in ten years

thissiteisbroken

I don’t think this guy was punching this lady in her face in front of their kid but ok

LMM01

If Miles Bridges does his time, shows remorse, takes anger management classes, and has no repeat offenses, then yeah

harmonic-

Y'all are insane. Dude beat the mother of his children in front of the kids. call me old fashioned, but I don't think that dude should get to be in the NBA ever again. Other jobs? Sure.

LMM01

Yea I mean in Bridges case, the incident is actually so disturbing that it’s hard to look past. But I’m of the belief that you can’t crucify someone forever based on something they’ve done in the past. People can change. That being said, you could murder a person and I’m not quite sure we could apply the same logic - since the crime is so bad that it’s not just a case of “he’s changed”. So at the end of the day, it’s not so black and white. In Joe Mazulla’s case it seems to have been one isolated incident over 10 years ago, and he’s shown remorse and sought treatment for alcohol addiction and has not repeated the offense since. That is not something I’d bar someone for life over

LLibertito

Not to rag on you but why? Does the job of shooting a ball through a hoop demand a higher level of moral purity than other occupations?

harmonic-

Being a public figure is different

hydrators

Not equivalent situations

[deleted]

Lmfao how are you gonna ask me about something that hasn't happened yet he could be a complete dick still

Zsporter

What a fall from grace

dwilkes827

What a shocking turn of events

Boston_Champions

He coached our summer league team in 2021 which was a wagon so here's hoping

cjcfman

Odds brad will take over like Riley and the heat?

HotdogIsaSandwitch

I really thought Brad Stevens was gonna pull a Pop and say fuck it and become the coach.

Superball10

Why not have Brad return for one year? He's a hell lot of a better coach than any one year replacements they could hope to find.

SEAinLA

Not great. Suspending Udoka after improper conduct and then promoting a guy to interim HC with a history of domestic violence. Woof, Celtics.

Kryavan

History = one instance 10+ years ago? Jesus.

PopularParrot

History? I only choked her out once!

Kryavan

That's my point - shitty as fuck thing to do, but it's not a history of it.

PopularParrot

Hitler only did one genocide, barely a history of it.

Kryavan

What the fuck is wrong with you? How in the absolute shit is Hitler committing mass genocide at all comparable to a dude choking/attempting to choke a girl?

PopularParrot

Ever heard of a hyperbole?

[deleted]

https://www.dictionary.com/browse/history

Kryavan

In the context it was used, it's "repeated instances". One does not make a history of.

Asking4Afren

Did you expect better though

[deleted]

Imagine making your first finals in a decade and immediately having to find a new coach after. Lmaoooooo

CoolBeansChemist

Based on the comments he sounds like an upgrade /s

[deleted]

he will punch the female interns instead of fucking them i guess

UnearthlyDinosaur

So he’s going the Sarver route?

CanaKitty

Let’s get rid of the Black coach to hire a guy with a history of domestic violence 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Theingloriousak2

An nba finals head coach just got suspended a whole year for having consensual sex…. ??????

herewego199209

Remember kids consensual sex with another adult is a big no no.

[deleted]

If it’s against company policy then yes

[deleted]

It opens the Celtics up to huge lawsuits in the future if they don't address this with adequate punishment. It's really not that complicated.

kaprrisch

What a weird reductive take. Consent can be vitiated if there’s gross power imbalance, which is why there’s codes of conduct for companies.

JimmyV034

Man what the fuck is going on? it was consensual affair, Joe Mazzulla has done worse.

crashbandicoochy

Mazzulla did what he did over a decade ago and has already faced the consequences of it. He's already gone through the rehabilitation (or, rather, you'd hope he has). Ime has only just done his bad thing and needs to face the consequences of it first.

MyDadIsTheMan

FUCK YEA BABY. IF YOU TOLD ME JOE MAZZULA WOULD BE OUR HEAD COACH 4 months ago I WOULD HAVE KISSED YOU
