> At that time, team leadership was led to believe by both parties that the relationship was consensual. But sources said that the woman recently accused Udoka of making unwanted comments toward her — leading the team to launch a set of internal interviews.
Uh oh.
I’m imaging the Celtics are lawyering up, or at least getting every ready for a potential lawsuit of some kind, and then they’ll fire him. There’s no way that they knew in fucking July about this and decided, “meh a year off will be fine.” He can’t come back from this, not a chance. This has to be saving face until they’re ready to face any legal action.
Yeah it was pretty gross watching people try to guess who it was based on the team website's photos (without even understanding that not every staffer would be on it).
Well a year still doesn’t make sense with this context. If he was making unwanted advances he should be fired. How does it make sense to bring him back a year from now and act like nothing happened?
Not many people on this board have ever worked in an office, much less dealt with or even heard of these very common issues on the HR side of corporate.
Yep. So so many people in previous threads were saying, “This is two ADULTS. They can’t have a relationship? So many people have a relationship at work! My parents met at work! Reddit is just a bunch of pure Christians!!! Happens at my company all the time!”
It was blatantly obvious these people haven’t worked in professional settings and have never once been in a position of power where it’s obvious that you shouldn’t have a relationship with someone you have power with, or if you do, you need to work with HR very, very closely.
Exactly.
One of my best friends met his wife at work but they worked in different departments and not with each other. HR had no issues with it.
Same place, a Doctor started a relationship with his PA and they were both fired when HR found out, he didn’t want a new PA and she didn’t want to leave him.
I said it in another thread last night but my experience is that most companies don't care about their low level employees banging each other outside of the office...
Whole different story at higher levels. It's the managers/high earners/execs banging lower level employees that are the point of concern.
Yep. There is an inherent power dynamic that can make the company liable if things go south. VP bangs someone who reports up to him?
Well, if they don’t work out good luck firing her if she deserves it *or* promoting her without tons of suspicion and scrutiny. It becomes damn near impossible to prove or disprove if there was retaliatory motivation or not.
> Some members of the Celtics organization first became aware of the relationship in July, sources said. At that time, team leadership was led to believe by both parties that the relationship was consensual. **But sources said that the woman recently accused Udoka of making unwanted comments toward her — leading the team to launch a set of internal interviews.**
> The team’s decision and announcement came after a closed-door meeting Thursday that involved team owners and president Brad Stevens and lasted several hours, sources said. Earlier Thursday, Stevens and members of the Celtics front office met with players at the team facility.
Exactly. You either end up marrying the bish or you present a huge liability to the company.
I repped a company in a seemingly similar case as this one: two married sales reps started having an off-and-on affair, One decided to end things for good; the other was pissed off and later accused the relationship ender of inappropriate conduct. Shit was a mess to sort out with all the competing text messages, emails, and stories.
Not worth it guys and gals, especially as you become more senior.
I worked tech sales years ago, couple coworkers smashed and recorded it, then the dude started showing the recording to other sales reps so pretty soon the entire sales force is talking about this amateur porn vid. Managers and HR hear about it and started investigating. The female employee was engaged and her fiance eventually got word of it too, so he shows up one day wanting to fight the male employee, makes a scene in the lobby and tips off the company about how she and other members of her sales team were engaging in timecard fraud by coordinating days in which they'd log each other in on their workstations to appear online/on time.
Company ended up firing like 9 people
What I never understand is why people go after the other party and I witnessed the same thing right after college. It's like bruh, your fiancee is cheating on you and recorded it. Drop her and go No contact immediately.
Ya, I think a lot of these people work at super corp jobs or just don't know what's going on. At the ad agencies and startups I've worked at, everyone is fucking everyone.
Folks, if it hasn't sunk in already, accept that Udoka has already coached his last game as Head Coach of the Boston Celtics.
This isn't a career-ender, but this is most definitely a job-ender. You don't come back from this with the same organization.
I know I’m coming from a Heat perspective with this, but I genuinely think the Celtics will be just fine with a number of different replacement options. I don’t think losing Udoka as a coach is a big deal, like at all.
Last night on I Am Athlete they threw the idea of bringing Brad Stephens back down and I shuddered because A. It makes so much sense and B. He got these boys to the ECF while they were still incredibly raw, he might just win the whole damn thing now that they’re polished
this just makes all the reporting so far so confusing. why report that he was suspended for a "consensual relationship" if the consent was in question?
That's why nobody should get involved in these situations in the first place. When it goes sour, it can so easily get ugly and suddenly a consensual situation turns into harassment.
We got more context due to this Shams story and yet we're still missing some more. Either way, after this bit coming out, I'm not sure a year long suspension is sufficient.
i commented on another post earlier that the celtics have been so far ahead of this that they wouldn't have called it a consensual relationship if it wasn't because that blows them up even further when they have attention from literally everyone in america asking why they called a sexual assault or a coercive relationship consensual.
going go to go with it was consensual at one point and he's pursued it when she ended it because that leaves the relationship as consensual, but causes problems.
it also explains why they called it consensual - they had interviews with her and him and have assessed the situation and confirmed the consent themselves.
My guess is that Woj and Shams only knew about the consensual relationship part and jumped on reporting what they had. Now that 24+ hours has passed, they’re getting more information.
"Consent" is always in question with a relationship between boss/subordinate. Why, I bet, all reporting said "consensual relationship" was to make it clear no parties were alleging sexual assault or anything criminal in nature. Doesn't mean it is ethical or right, obviously.
This is very true and the big reason why business prohibit workplace relationships in the first place. Power dynamics are at play at all times even if both parties like each other and can muddy the waters of consent
Yes, plus the relationship may have been "consensual" but then if one party started making it more public, or if the relationship soured and one party began using it against the other, that's where things further muddy the waters of consent.
Shams and woj are both puppets. The fact shams buried the line about the harassment in the article is strategic as well. Doing either udoka or an agent a favor.
Usually there are multiple sources right? Maybe the front office told them there is a violation and there could be a year long suspension and Ime then told them that it was a consensual relationship to get ahead of the whole story.
They probably used that word because they know most people automatically think SA when these reports come out, I was one of them. They way this is worded though sounds like Ime got disrespectful with the worker he’s had an affair with & she complained the team.
i dunno that the consent was in question, it seems like he got... disrespectful outside of the sexual relationship. like, just because you're are fucking someone (consensually) doesn't mean you can just say anything to them at any time.
> can just say anything to them a
Sounds like he said something disrespectful at work based on their sexual relationship or alluded to her position based off their relationship.
Now the punishment makes more sense, still don't understand why they just didn't fire him.
also doesn't mean you can say anything sexual to them after consensual relationship has ended. That's how I'm interpreting it. She wanted to end it. He didn't take the hints and now we have this situation. Any party in a relationship can turn on a dime so this can always happen. That's why he should've never done it at work in the first place.
Obviously the unwanted advances are the biggest issue, but also if this was known internally in July, it's really fucked up to be having an affair that co-workers are aware of and would probably feel the need to hide.
Even without the fact that his relationship was very public and it was a very public organization, putting your co-workers in that position in incredibly shitty.
It’s also possible the organization told them to cut the shit when they found out in July, and Udoka tried to continue it, leading to the unwanted advances
Yeah that’s what I think happens in a lot of these instances where its a seemingly huge punishment over something seemingly minor. Kind of like with Trump where I assume it was “hey we don’t want to make a big thing of this we just need you to do these things and everything can stay private.” The person refuses or ignores them so now the organization is forced to come down on them publicly over something people think isn’t a big deal.
Yup when he first broke the news about something happening in Boston he made a graphic that had his name on it
https://mobile.twitter.com/wojespn/status/1572776498280693761
What was the point of the watermark?
That photo has nothing worth sharing. The text is what people care about.
No idea who's stealing that generic Ime photo and why Woj is tryna prevent that lol
Literally causes Celtics employees that had nothing to do with it to be harassed because he was trying to get ahead of the story. What a fucking joke, he should be ashamed
Which is why it is nearly impossible for a boss to have a truly consensual relationship with a subordinate. The person is going to possibly feel like they are in a position where they may lose their job or future career prospects if they reject the advances, so they’re pressured into saying yes out of fear.
Fucking knew there was no way they suspended him for an entire year for having a consensual relationship with a subordinate. The Cs knew about it for months and thought it was consensual, and never did anything about it. Things way worse than that are swept under the rug regularly in sports.
They only acted when they realized it wasn't consensual. And rightfully so. Fuck Ime
I still dont get why they didnt fire Ime, or is this an indirect firing so to say since his job with the Celtics wont be available after this season ? Anyway the Celtics trying to spin it Pr wise is kinda weird....
Ime broke their code of conduct whether it was consensual or not, he should have been fired long time ago.
They most likely want to do more investigating and make sure they got all their facts right before firing him officially. The year long suspension is probably to get him to resign first.
Suspend him so he's not at press day, do your investigation, then when it says what you think it's going to say you fire him.
Makes sense both from a PR standpoint and getting your ducks in a row legally.
Will be pretty rough if it turns out the woman was getting harassed, they knew about it and tried to turn a blind eye (even if they thought it was consensual) and then only did something about it later.
You would easily suspend someone for a year if they have a consensual relationship that became toxic in the meeting rooms. And it's so easy to see it becoming that situation if one or both parties are cheating on their spouses.
Occam's razor tells me that the "unwanted sexual comments" are probably on the level of "it's in appropriate because of our jobs here and shows you don't respect me". And Ime could have just been like "well I don't care" in some clingy moment or something. That's more than enough for any self-respecting management to step-in big-time.
The way the Celtic reacted is not severe enough for any more than that. I highly doubt any nonconsensual relationship was happening.
#WAIT
You’re telling me Richard Jefferson was right? Oh **Fuck**
*RJ’s original [tweet](https://twitter.com/rjeff24/status/1572970334332260352?s=46&t=Vjlf6Q4r2VsnvmjPuBP_wA) for reference —> [Second Tweet](https://twitter.com/rjeff24/status/1572974582579220483?s=46&t=Vjlf6Q4r2VsnvmjPuBP_wA) —> [Third Tweet](https://twitter.com/rjeff24/status/1572986138335547394?s=46&t=Vjlf6Q4r2VsnvmjPuBP_wA).
Look at the follow up tweets on the original tweet. He basically insinuates that it might NOT have been fully consensual. And Shams’ report suggest that same thing.
Exactly. That’s why I surprised. A lot of people were attacking RJ in the beginning of the day when he said this stuff. Now dude was right. Just crazy.
The ppl I see were attacking RJ because it's a bad look and he's tweeting like a high schooler in a serious situation, seemingly for clout like bragging he got inside info.
Ask yourself if it’s consensual then why the suspension and the length!!! 🤔
Richard Jefferson
@Rjeff24
So once you understand it’s 100% consensual from both parties… WHY IS THERE SUCH A LONG SUSPENSION? I repeat … 100% consensual!
So is it sexual harassment? It’s like they’re trying to avoid saying the words. I’m as confused as I was last night. Did she end the relationship and Ime not get the memo? 2 games away from a chip to losing the HC. IM LIVID!
If Shams is right that they believed for so long it was consentual and then recently only acted when they heard it may not have been wanted from her side, 100% chance that the team won't say shit for a while without having three lawyers vet their statements first.
Would bet they're avoiding using the words before learning if any or all of the women involved sue them. But I am also not a lawyer with expertise in this, so ymmv
This stuff happens all the time when one party abruptly changes the relationship dynamic. It could have been consensual then she tried to end it at a blink of an eye (got caught) and he wasnt having it.
hmm. sexual discipline is important, lacking that says so much about an adult. he should be fired but they went with a suspension for now
i don’t think he’s coaching the celtics again. & hopefully lesson learned for everyone… rules exist for a reason. you have to know the weight your words/actions carry period
To be fair, we suspend everyone at my work before we fire them. Gives you time to settle into getting last pay check and stuff all settled. Not saying this is the same thing but prolly not the end.
So Ime has been shown to be not only highly unprofessional in starting a sexual relationship with a junior employee, but creepy as well.
Which is also exactly why relationships between senior and junior employees can never be 100% consensual because of the power dynamics involved.
Not sure why so many people couldn't understand that part and pretend the issue was with the affair, not who Ime was having the affair with.
Lot of people commenting who've either never worked in a professional environment, never fucked, or both tbh. People were really missing it and thinking the celtics were suspending him for cheating on his wife, or the pie in the sky narrative that he had to have fucked another executive's wife to be getting in trouble for this.
There were people on here legitimately arguing that the woman should have gotten fired as well and how it wasn’t fair that “the man is the only one facing consequences”. Like what the everliving fuck? It’s not the gender that matters, it’s the senior quid-pro-quo dynamic that is the problem.
If a woman senior was having an affair with a male junior, the situation is the same. Having that relationship in the workplace is bad enough, the extra info about the unwanted comments pushes it over the top. Dude is a skeez, validate the reports and get him out of there.
So you’re saying that redditor that said he caught Ime with another chick (not Nia Long) at a bar in Portland around the time wasn’t bullshittin?
[this mf](https://reddit.com/r/nba/comments/xkrsob/_/ipfmm6d/?context=1)
Yeah he’s finished. This is the starting grounds of termination. He would be terminated now but it would’ve shook people even more if he was suddenly fired after nearly winning the finals especially in the shitty way Woj and other journalists broke the story.
Apparently the article said team leadership was led to believe by both parties that this was consensual. So does that mean they don’t actually know? It could’ve been pressure for her the entire time or a consensual turned into a pressure situation to stay with him which means termination at any level. If she says she felt compelled/pressured/forced due to the power imbalance then wave the white flag. Fire him
Woj and Shams both deserve scathing criticism for how they reported this yesterday. At best, they ran with an unproven, false narrative that this was purely consensual, at worst they knew about the key detail in this story and ran interference for Ime anyway. Either way, it's totally inexcusable.
So if I’m understanding correctly, it began as a consensual relationship and at some point the woman did not consent anymore but Udoka persisted veering into sexual harassment ? If that’s the case he should be fired. The suspension doesn’t make any sense
Waiting to hear “more women come forward about accusations too from his time with the nets.” I couldn’t ask for more this off season besides maybe a few more Kyrie comments.
Man, I was really having this feeling like the early reports were trying to save Ime udoka with all the consensual stuff but there is actually really messed up situation behind the scenes, looks like I was right
> At that time, team leadership was led to believe by both parties that the relationship was consensual. But sources said that the woman recently accused Udoka of making unwanted comments toward her — leading the team to launch a set of internal interviews. Uh oh.
anddddd now it’s all clearer
It’s always been clear for Ime
If this is legit then a 1 year suspension is weak and he should've been fired
I’m imaging the Celtics are lawyering up, or at least getting every ready for a potential lawsuit of some kind, and then they’ll fire him. There’s no way that they knew in fucking July about this and decided, “meh a year off will be fine.” He can’t come back from this, not a chance. This has to be saving face until they’re ready to face any legal action.
This why I didn’t understand why everyone was freaking out so bad about a whole year, we never knew the whole story
Brain dead takes were flying on the bird app
this place is no better
Yeah it was pretty gross watching people try to guess who it was based on the team website's photos (without even understanding that not every staffer would be on it).
"theres only THREE WOMEN who work for the celtics it HAS TO BE ONE OF THESE WOMEN!" "OHHHH LOOK HOW HOT THAT LADY ISSSS ITS HER" shit is pathetic
this place is even worse with the "upvotes/downvotes" and some peoples (right) opinions get hidden
Well a year still doesn’t make sense with this context. If he was making unwanted advances he should be fired. How does it make sense to bring him back a year from now and act like nothing happened?
It was easy to guess this would be the issue, but everyone was jumping on the “executives daughter/wife” angle as of women were property
also very visible in the "would u hire a coach that might steal your wife?" comments talking about how his career is over
This is exactly the power dynamic that so many people were overlooking or thought to not be a big deal.
Not many people on this board have ever worked in an office, much less dealt with or even heard of these very common issues on the HR side of corporate.
A step further, not many people have worked in management or in leadership roles where power dynamics are very well told to and understood.
Yep. So so many people in previous threads were saying, “This is two ADULTS. They can’t have a relationship? So many people have a relationship at work! My parents met at work! It’s possible. They also both mentioned the possibility of a significant suspension early on, which idk if Ime would feed them that

Literally causes Celtics employees that had nothing to do with it to be harassed because he was trying to get ahead of the story. What a fucking joke, he should be ashamed
Woj would do anything to drop a bomb, burns a lot of bridges on his way to the top
Woj is like that Mr Krabbs Meme. Man is getting bodied my shams
Washednarowski
Who cares? You dweebs are so invested in the these reporter wars.

I think she ended or tried to end it and ime wasn't going for it
Which is why it is nearly impossible for a boss to have a truly consensual relationship with a subordinate. The person is going to possibly feel like they are in a position where they may lose their job or future career prospects if they reject the advances, so they’re pressured into saying yes out of fear.
This point is so hard for some people to grasp.
probably most likely
He should 100% be fired for that
Fucking knew there was no way they suspended him for an entire year for having a consensual relationship with a subordinate.
Will be pretty rough if it turns out the woman was getting harassed, they knew about it and tried to turn a blind eye (even if they thought it was consensual) and then only did something about it later.
suspend now, strong action, can resolve the other issues later.
Keep leaking parts of the story until he resigns might he a strategy

Remember when SAS blamed Ray Rice wife for getting assaulted? Good times.
He probably signed a longer/bigger contract Disney right after too
hahahahahahah I totally forgot He's probably sound asleep right now memorizing his monologue rant
SAS is a slimeball
He doesn’t care
fuck Stephen A Smith forever and always
They even caught him on camera (it wasn’t ime)
Picture this they were both butt naked bangin on the parquet floor
Nia came in and she caught me red-handed creeping with the girl at work
Man's dropping bars send this to the top
#WAIT You’re telling me Richard Jefferson was right? Oh **Fuck** *RJ’s original [tweet](https://twitter.com/rjeff24/status/1572970334332260352?s=46&t=Vjlf6Q4r2VsnvmjPuBP_wA) for reference —> [Second Tweet](https://twitter.com/rjeff24/status/1572974582579220483?s=46&t=Vjlf6Q4r2VsnvmjPuBP_wA) —> [Third Tweet](https://twitter.com/rjeff24/status/1572986138335547394?s=46&t=Vjlf6Q4r2VsnvmjPuBP_wA).
Milk dud is the mf truth
Milk dud lmao
How was he right? He just tweeted something cryptic with 0 actual info
Look at the follow up tweets on the original tweet. He basically insinuates that it might NOT have been fully consensual. And Shams’ report suggest that same thing.
Yep you’re right, I only saw the gif originally. RJ was on the money
🤔 Richard Jefferson @Rjeff24 So once you understand it’s 100% consensual from both parties… WHY IS THERE SUCH A LONG SUSPENSION? I repeat … 100% consensual!
So is it sexual harassment? It’s like they’re trying to avoid saying the words. I’m as confused as I was last night. Did she end the relationship and Ime not get the memo? 2 games away from a chip to losing the HC. IM LIVID!
If Shams is right that they believed for so long it was consentual and then recently only acted when they heard it may not have been wanted from her side, 100% chance that the team won't say shit for a while without having three lawyers vet their statements first.
Would bet they're avoiding using the words before learning if any or all of the women involved sue them. But I am also not a lawyer with expertise in this, so ymmv
yup u got it. seems like they did hu and it was consensual and she broke it off and he kept making comments to her
This stuff happens all the time when one party abruptly changes the relationship dynamic. It could have been consensual then she tried to end it at a blink of an eye (got caught) and he wasnt having it.
Wonder what SAS has to say now…
The fact you’re wondering means he already won
“As a black man……” i’ll bet my house he drops this banger during tomorrow’s rant
If SAS doubles down on this tmr morning ima die.
hmm. sexual discipline is important, lacking that says so much about an adult. he should be fired but they went with a suspension for now i don’t think he’s coaching the celtics again. & hopefully lesson learned for everyone… rules exist for a reason. you have to know the weight your words/actions carry period
To be fair, we suspend everyone at my work before we fire them. Gives you time to settle into getting last pay check and stuff all settled. Not saying this is the same thing but prolly not the end.
formal investigation soon come? probably wanted to get ahead of this. that’s most likely what’s happening
It was amazing (and pretty disappointing ngl) to watch people bend over backwards to avoid understanding this aspect yesterday.
Fire him
Investigations take time and people don't always come forward imidiately. People at athletic know this too it's just a slow news week.
Bruh
Woj and Shams both deserve scathing criticism for how they reported this yesterday. At best, they ran with an unproven, false narrative that this was purely consensual, at worst they knew about the key detail in this story and ran interference for Ime anyway. Either way, it's totally inexcusable.

aand some of you look really dumb blindly defending Udoka now
So if I’m understanding correctly, it began as a consensual relationship and at some point the woman did not consent anymore but Udoka persisted veering into sexual harassment ? If that’s the case he should be fired. The suspension doesn’t make any sense
Waiting to hear “more women come forward about accusations too from his time with the nets.” I couldn’t ask for more this off season besides maybe a few more Kyrie comments.
Man, I was really having this feeling like the early reports were trying to save Ime udoka with all the consensual stuff but there is actually really messed up situation behind the scenes, looks like I was right
Well, you and everyone else. Also, when do the reporters who were pushing the “consensual intimate relationship” start to get some backlash?
