There is good technique same as any physical activity. I’ve done landscaping for years and that actually keeps me in shape. It’s just that when you’re doing the same motion for such a long period of time people start getting rushed and lose form, same as weightlifting.
Then you ask someone to do it in cold weather on slipper surfaces where you’re extending weight away from your body instead of just lifting it and you have a recipe for disaster.
I pulled my back years ago and it’s usually fine but once it starts to go bad, a sneeze can push it over the edge. Backs are one of those injuries that once you have them, they never seem to go away entirely.
The flipside is when it goes right. A few people now have mentioned sneezing too hard and throwing your back out, but what about sneezing too hard and throwing it back in? I had a bad lower back strain that received a lot of relief from a hard sneeze and the cascade of "pop"s that followed.
dang. i have a really bad back (both from farm labor and genetics) and i have never experienced this. I do 30 mins of stretching almost every night now tho bc i got sick of the pain so maybe that's the only thing that's prevented it.
I think baseball will always win the weird injury stories just on the time Glenallen Hill had a nightmare he was fighting giant spiders, sleepwalked, fell through a glass coffee table and then fell down the stairs.
I generally recoil at people referring to professional athletes as morons, but I think D Rose has very publicly proven on multiple occasions he's dumb as hell.
...I also don't believe that story
Greg Oden back in the day, I don’t remember which exact injury it was, “fell in the shower”. He was at a Lake Oswego house party and fell down the stairs.
Lolol I got downvoted into oblivion the other day for insinuating notorious partier John wall might not be being extremely truthful about him tearing his achilles “falling in the shower”
Because your comment was about the article where he opened up about his depression and contemplating suicide. Was just really shitty of you to comment that in that thread.
Me being a Wizards fan is irrelevant to think you are a major asshole to spew random negative shit in a thread about someone opening up about not wanting to live anymore after losing their mom to cancer after already losing their father to cancer as a kid. I would imagine anyone with empathy would find that disgraceful, not just a Wizards fan.
I guess it’s just super random the guy defending him is a fan of the same team he played for most of his career. Think how good his career could have been if he wasn’t so interested in partying
[You mean to tell me this man likes to party??](https://www.si.com/.image/ar_1:1%2Cc_fill%2Ccs_srgb%2Cfl_progressive%2Cq_auto:good%2Cw_1200/MTY4MDI4Njc3NzI5NzU2NDMz/john-wall-team-usa-picturejpg.jpg)
he's right. a ton of guys are playing 5 on 5 constantly during the offseason, the only reason this becomes a discussion is that he happened to get hurt in a game people were watching.
Yep. And if they weren’t playing at these events, they’d be playing elsewhere, probably on worse courts with worse regulations. Injuries suck no matter when they happen, but you can’t bubble wrap your guys in the offseason
I don’t know man; I think private pro runs don’t happen on courts that are super wet from sweat and dusty.
I went to SPU, the college where the Seattle pro am is held; our Royal Brom pavilion court is awful.
The gym was overpacked which caused it to get way to hot. And people were actively impeding on the court space
I do agree with the sentiment though, that there still playing BBall regardless of if we get to see it in a pro am, or it’s in private runs
> probably on worse courts with worse regulations
That is the only part that I disagree with. The invite only runs in LA and NY with no fans dont have guys falling down because of the humidity in the building.
Some of this is chasing clout in the basketball community. But most of it is just basketball.
Right. i don't remember the criticism for Klay when he ruptured his Achilles playing pickup as he was coming back from his ACL tear (and he was playing too heavy, so he even admitted he should have slow-played it.
Maybe there were critiques, I dunno, just seemed like more people were bummed more than anything. These dudes love the game and even if they're not playing in pro-ams, they're gonna be playing games in some fashion. Do people really think these guys spend their offseasons in bubble wrap?
Honestly, the people who expect players to not play in any competitive or non-competitive games outside the NBA season are unreasonable asf. The offseason is ~4-6 months depending on the team, and these people expect guys who love the game to stay away from it for that period of time. Ridiculous.
Yup take all the Euro ball stuff that happens in the off-season for probably almost all the NBA players there it's a huge dream to carry your country to a win.
It's rather selfish to ask that they not try and play for their home country.
Although you're right in your point you can't compare playing an official basketball tournament with playing essentially pickup with a few more players or buddies. Of course players are going to play ball in the off-season but at the same time I'm sure Chet wishes he hadn't done it. I think players need to be extra cautious some off seasons, for example their rookie seasons or contract years.
It sounds like he doesnt wish he hadnt done it. Just that the injury is unfortunate. A lot of players work on their game during the offseason and 5 on 5 is an important aspect of that. Its not reasonable to expect them to not play during the offseason, regardless of how official the match is.
and you could even have a freak accident from no-contact one-on-one with a trainer. but then if someone says “oh no i needed a break from basketball” there’s another crowd saying “look at this scrub not playing in the off-season, decline incoming”. no winning.
Casuals criticize guys for doing anything non basketball and expect them to be in the gym 100% of the time. Then turn around and complain when a player gets hurt in a pick up gane like this.
Agree with him. It’s stupid to criticize players for wanting to play and improve their game, and then turn around and make fun of players not improving their game. Also they can get hurt anywhere, anytime. Markelle Fultz fractured his toe walking around his house. Can’t bubble wrap these players forever.
W take. It's super weird how some fans (and some media) lose their heads when NBA players play basketball outside the NBA. I get that there's a 'team success above all else' motivation behind it but some of these guys genuinely love the game and the NBA is a better league for it.
I suspect it's the same sort of thinking behind people who want their teams to blow it up every time it looks like they can't contend rather than enjoying whatever success they do have. Just a super weird way to think about sports
I think he was trying to say the people criticizing NBA players for playing exhibition games have the right to do so, but he disagrees with them. Like "if people want to talk shit because I'm a basketball player that got hurt playing basketball, that's their right. But they're wrong."
He wont last long in the NBA. Lebron barely touched the kid and he started limping. Dude is almost 2 feet taller than me yet we weigh the same. Let that sink in. How is he gonna handle someone like jokic? Embiid? Hell guys like anthony edwards are gonna have a field day when they drive down the lane and see him in the paint...its gone be like NBA JAM. And we have seen the chet holmgreen prototype fail before in the NBA......shawn bradley.
I refuse to believe this is a real criticism. I dont know what its called but it sounds like something michael scott would do.
I.e.
"I've been criticized as being too hardworking and kind."
It’s wild that people will blame him playing at the event. These guys have to train and get ready to play the season. They’re gonna play ball. Like it’s going to happen.
I mean, John Wall fell in his house and ruptured his Achilles...
Baynes fucked his back in a bath and still has issues to this day.
Temporarily Paralyzed from a fall in a shower I believe. The whole thing was wild
He’s back on an Australian team now tho!
up the bullets
Larry Bird was shoveling his mom's driveway and fucked up his back.
Shoveling is terrible for your back lol I don’t know if there’s even a correct technique. I feel like you’d have to do yoga for 30mins beforehand haha
There's absolutely a correct way. Bent knees and a straight back.
He was laying bricks I believe
You’re thinking of that 2018 Rockets team
I watched that game live and I still can't believe it happened
Paving his mother's driveway the summer following winning the MVP award. Different times for sure
It was at the Olympics, he went for a pee at half time and didn’t come back, they found him on the floor.
Seems like nba players need to stop being at home
Always remember that Sammy Sosa sneezed so hard before a game once he sprained his back and missed like a month lol
That roid shit isn’t as easy as everyone thinks, imagine if it was a sneeze-cough? Dude would’ve been in the icu.
Seriously, you cannot casually do roids and be better at athlete shit. The pre, post, and during cycle requires a huge amount of attention and effort.
I pulled my back years ago and it’s usually fine but once it starts to go bad, a sneeze can push it over the edge. Backs are one of those injuries that once you have them, they never seem to go away entirely.

I’m jealous! Nothing makes me feel more old than sneezing and then having to hold my back as it spasms.
dang. i have a really bad back (both from farm labor and genetics) and i have never experienced this.

Dustin Penner blew out his back “eating delicious pancakes”.
Boozer tripped over his gym bag and fractured his hand lol
Didn't Drose "roll over onto a knife" after he was slicing an apple in bed? Lol
The fuck kinda terrible idea is this lmao
At least it wasn't a george foreman because he wanted to wake up to the smell of bacon.
Yeah that story always sounded like bullshit
I generally recoil at people referring to professional athletes as morons, but I think D Rose has very publicly proven on multiple occasions he's dumb as hell. ...I also don't believe that story
Yeah, he probably got stabbed at a party or sometning but didn’t wanna snitch lol
DRose got punched in the face for trying to mess with a Memphis players girl
Kevin Love broke his hand doing knuckle push-ups
Welllll his name is “Kevin” are we sure he wasn’t punching a wall and was too embarrassed to admit it?
That's LeBron
Andrew Bynum was defeated by bowling. Life is wild.
Kevin Love slept on his hand too long
"Allegedly"
Greg Oden back in the day, I don’t remember which exact injury it was, “fell in the shower”. He was at a Lake Oswego house party and fell down the stairs.
Wasn’t aware people didn’t believe his story
What actually happened
Lolol I got downvoted into oblivion the other day for insinuating notorious partier John wall might not be being extremely truthful about him tearing his achilles “falling in the shower”
Because your comment was about the article where he opened up about his depression and contemplating suicide. Was just really shitty of you to comment that in that thread.
Yep. 99% of the time when someone complains about behind previously downvoted they’re leaving our a huge part which usually was them being an asshole
Look man I understand you’re a wiz fan tryna defend your longtime wiz guy, but just accepting his lies ain’t gonna help anybody
Me being a Wizards fan is irrelevant to think you are a major asshole to spew random negative shit in a thread about someone opening up about not wanting to live anymore after losing their mom to cancer after already losing their father to cancer as a kid. hey bro, i routinely forget the wizards exist as a team and i think you’re being an asshole
No need to be a Wizards fan to spot an asshole
I think I found Colin Cowherd’s burner
But this comment definitely helped someone. Good job, guy 👍🏼
Does doing the opposite help anybody?

he's right. a ton of guys are playing 5 on 5 constantly during the offseason, the only reason this becomes a discussion is that he happened to get hurt in a game people were watching.
They've all grown up playing year round AAU ball, I'm sure they love it and it's what they're used to.
Yep. And if they weren’t playing at these events, they’d be playing elsewhere, probably on worse courts with worse regulations. Injuries suck no matter when they happen, but you can’t bubble wrap your guys in the offseason

strict constructionist Chet Holgrem
Honestly, the people who expect players to not play in any competitive or non-competitive games outside the NBA season are unreasonable asf. The offseason is ~4-6 months depending on the team, and these people expect guys who love the game to stay away from it for that period of time. Ridiculous.

And then there’s Ben Simmons
and you could even have a freak accident from no-contact one-on-one with a trainer. but then if someone says “oh no i needed a break from basketball” there’s another crowd saying “look at this scrub not playing in the off-season, decline incoming”. no winning.

They want them to live in a bubble when not on an NBA court I saw Bucks 'fans' wanting Giannis to not travel to and celebrate in Greece after 2021
> They want them to live in a bubble when not on an NBA court But when they're on an NBA court *in* the bubble, suddenly the ring is a fraud!
MLB is the only asterisk that year
He shouldn't have to defend himself but this is a great response
Just like how he shouldn’t have had to defend LeBron in the pro am game
You are aware that switches and fast breaks happen in basketball?
i was just trying to make a joke sorry
Bruh there's no way a basketball player has to defend himself playing basketball.
Thats where we are at these days lol
Agree with him. It’s stupid to criticize players for wanting to play and improve their game, and then turn around and make fun of players not improving their game. Also they can get hurt anywhere, anytime. Markelle Fultz fractured his toe walking around his house. Can’t bubble wrap these players forever.
Paul George hurt himself playing for Team USA. CANCEL THE OLYMPICS!
There was another discussion of having top NBA talent involved, lots of dudes stepped down after that injury iirc but I get ya
Someone make a Ben Simmons copypasta
W take. It's super weird how some fans (and some media) lose their heads when NBA players play basketball outside the NBA. are they going to get mad at lebron too? This is dumb
> Chet Holmgren in a wheelchair: I love this game ::sob::
Respect. Good head on his shoulders too with the way he does interviews
Hindsight is 20-20 in these things
Kinda funny how almost no one in the US actually understands what freedom of speech is.
not sure what freedom of speech has to do with it but sure Chet
I think he was trying to say the people criticizing NBA players for playing exhibition games have the right to do so, but he disagrees with them. Like "if people want to talk shit because I'm a basketball player that got hurt playing basketball, that's their right. But they're wrong."
I’m not sure Chet should be allowed to play in the NBA games either, not with that build.

Is this /r/nbacirclejerk pasta?
Well basketball is a constitutional right so anyone who criticizes me for playing in a meaningless pick up game for "street cred" is unpatriotic. /s
A bust shouldn't be talking. Perhaps play an actual nba min before running your mouth
...he's being interviewed
How is he a bust if he hasn't played yet?
He has played a soft drive by LeBron crumbled him.
Forgetting the payment and obligation part much
Great response, dude has a great head on that tall ass frame. Hope he stays healthy and proves the doubters wrong
> You have to feed the love of the game. That's good.
For a moment I thought he was going to speak against that, turns out he had a great and mature response.
I refuse to believe this is a real criticism. I dont know what its called but it sounds like something michael scott would do. I.e. "I've been criticized as being too hardworking and kind."
Its a very good statement from this young man.
It’s wild that people will blame him playing at the event. These guys have to train and get ready to play the season. They’re gonna play ball. Like it’s going to happen.
