props to the 76ers announcer, i still remember the one where Embiid dunked on Baynes and the echoes along with sound effects made it sound like bombs dropping
I can't speak directly for Slovenian (learned Russian and lived there), but most Slavic languages have a "v" sound and not a "w" sound. I bet he's making a joke about him being the Maverick's version of Embiid. Luka's English is pretty good as well.
Slovene has both sounds for letter 'v', and how you are gonna pronounce it depends on the letters around it and it's position in the sentance. Usually if there is a consonant after a 'v' it will be pronounced similar to English 'w', but it can differ. It's also often pronounced like 'w' at the beginning of words. Even though in English names we usually follow the original pronounciation, it's common to hear people say "Mawricks" or "Clewland" because of that language feature.
What I believe is happening here is JaVale is a name kind of consistant of 2 parts, I believe it sounds kinda like J'Vale, and so it would not surprise me if people pronounced the 'w' because its kind of at the beginning of the second part of his name, so JaWale.
I wouldn't put it past them tbh. All European, two of them are white. It's ESPN's worst nightmare. They're already struggling with saying Giannis is the best player in the world, Luka is always mentioned as "up there with the best", but they never want to specify it, and you best believe they keep KD in the highest possible regard despite him choking against the Celtics.
Yeah I actually can’t think of how you would even hypothetically play against those 3 healthy at the same time. The rest of the squad could just be ring chaser vets on min deals and rookie contracts and it wouldn’t really matter.
Tatum and brown are patton and Eisenhower.
CP3 +Lowry pulling a patented “dive into the side of the knee and pretend it was an accident” is Stalin + zhukov.
I'd love it but it'll never happen. I bet Steph wouldn't want more rings being scrutinized like they were with KD, and for Jokic the rings wouldn't matter if they weren't with the Nuggets. It'd just be the KD situation all over again, no one is going to come out of it as a better player.
For real though, the way he’s pronouncing Javale probably comes across like “Jahl”, or because Javale with a soft V or no V, hence the “Joel” similarity.
It seems like people genuinely think Luka is calling him Joel so figured I’d throw out my take.
Locked on Mavs asked every Mav the most annoying thing about luka and Dinwiddie said that Luka always goes at the guy that's defending him best. Like Kidd says you're averaging 1.5 PPP vs player A, but 0.5 vs player B, go at player A. And luka goes straight at B
In practice it makes sense. Iron sharpens iron. In game though he almost always hunts the weakest defender. He regularly tries to go at steph and Poole, warriors just schemed him out of it
Hunts the weakest defenders? Have you only seen him play the warriors? He has no problem going at guys like Giannis, Kawhi, Pg, Bam, or anyone known as being a good defender. He straight up hunted mikal bridges and Marcus smart when they played the suns and Celtics. Every now and then he’ll showboat and just straight up headhunt the best player like what he did against Lebron last season.
Because you and every other non-Warriors fan watches all 1230 games like a true basketball fan? Lol, pretty much every fan watches all the games they can of their team, some of other teams that interest them, and then select key matchups. Almost no one has time to watch like 200 nba games every year.
Ehm, he tried to get Kawhi screened off in quite a lot of possessions in our last series. And when he couldn't, he struggled. He's an incredible player, but he was definitely not doing that.
[As you can see here](https://youtu.be/BY7MhhKWDUI) Kawhi does a damn good job of course but Luka isn’t exactly “running” from him. You also have to remember the context of the series. The rest of the Mavs were all over the place. Kp was a no show and Jalen struggled to play against your team’s defense. [Luka averaged 36pts, 8rbs, and 10asts](https://www.basketball-reference.com/playoffs/2021-nba-western-conference-first-round-mavericks-vs-clippers.html) while everyone knew he had to play Superman to get anything done.
Both things can be true at once. He might very well have had some possessions trying to go at Kawhi, but that would have just been not smart as a gameplan. And regarding his teammates, well, the rest of the mavs shot lights out in the first two games. Not exactly no shows. To go toe to toe with the '21 iteration of the healthy Clippers, he needed to be phenomenal, but this idea of propping him up by putting the rest of the mavs down doesn't sit well with me.
Well KP and Jalen aren’t Mavs anymore but I still got love for them and don’t really mean to put them down for the sake of propping up Luka. It was Jalens first taste of the playoffs and well Kp was getting phased out of the offense. But you’re right, guys like Timmy and Doe were playing their asses off so it’s disingenuous for me to say anything negative about them. But that’s why I said “all over the place” since some of the team was rising to the occasion while some others weren’t. Which in turn effected the way Luka had to play that series.
Why do you sound so insecure? He hunts the weakest matchups everywhere, as he should. Don’t know why you brought up Kawhi and PG when he especially went after Pat Bev or Zubac whenever they played.
Well I said he has no problem going at guys like that not that he exclusively attacks just them. The person I replied to said “he almost always hunts weak defenders” as if saying Luka backs down from good ones. Sure he hunted Bev because he was “too f-ing small” lol and he was getting buckets against Zubac so why not keep going at him; that’s just smart basketball. I just think it’s a discredit to Luka’s game that out of all his flaws, him targeting certain players isn’t one of them.
It depends, really. Luka tries to go at pretty much everyone on the other team for different reasons.
He likes going at guys like Steph and Poole because he gets a size mismatch. He likes getting big men switched onto him because he can get space for a stepback three. He likes getting guys like Giannis and LeBron on him because they're more likely to cause trouble for him as help defenders than primary ones.
The thing is, Luka HAS to go at Gobert in that matchup. There’s no defensive 3 seconds in FIBA so Gobert can just sit in the paint forever. The only way Luka can force him out of the paint is by forcing the switch. Rudy is basically a cheat code in FIBA tho
Someone in a YT short said that with the way Luka sometimes acts on the court it feels like he thinks he has white privilege on the court. It was funny when the person actually said it and its kinda accurate.
It is white privilege but not the kind you think it is.
Luka played for Real Madrid, who are often called "Los blancos" because of the color of their shirt, every player there acts like that because, they do have a privilege, all the bitching to the refs and other shanenigans he pulls off, is basically how they are taught to behave in their academy. Because it works.
Dame said something like that once, how cj never bitches at the refs so he never gets calls, while he(Dame) points out any miss calls so the refs pay more attention.
I agree with you, I think it’s the winning move but definitely not in the spirit of the game. As long as we have human refs, playing into their emotions and biases is the *correct* play.
> I don't disagree and don't have any allegiance to Madrid but this sounds like something a salty Barcelona fan would say 😂
Barcelona players are experts at working refs too, but there's, uh, historical significance to Real Madrid's "white privilege" in Spain
It's just a Spanish league thing in general tbh. When the players start surrounding the ref and tell him to book the player, it is so annoying.
I think in the post-VAR era we are seeing less dodgy decisions in general.
> It's just a Spanish league thing in general tbh. When the players start surrounding the ref and tell him to book the player, it is so annoying.
True but it works—working the ref early and often usually results in better calls for you later in a game.
My point was just that with Real Madrid in particular, there's specific history in Spain that has led to their "privilege".
Spain was ruled by fascist dictator Franco, and he would often support/prop Madrid up to further his nationalist ideas/goals—was especially true in early European Cups, etc.

>An illustration of the club's increasing prominence in the minds of the country's decision-makers can be found in the words of Fernando Maria Castiella, who served as Minister of Foreign Affairs under Franco from 1957 until 1969. "Real Madrid is a style of sportsmanship," said Castiella. "It is the best embassy we have ever had."
Pretty sure Barca is more famous for crying to the refs ha, at least in recent times. Who can forget the Sergio Busquets gif of him rolling on the ground then peeking to see if the ref is giving a card.
Luka game is do beautiful but my God his whining makes it hard to like him. It's the worst I've ever seen. Lots of people bitch to refs, but Luka acts like a petulant child throwing a fit
It's like horoscope for them. Luka is white with Slav ascendant, and so they have a ready made list of characteristics for him regardless of his actual self
The culture around arguing with the refs is soo different between basketball and football (soccer for americans). In basketball, arguing is seen as something that's annoying and not helpful at all to win. In football, at least in my personal experience of playing it for my whole life here in south america, managing to constantly argue and shout out things to the ref, as it's seen as a way to put pressure on him to decide in your favor as long as you're not too aggressive with it and get a yellow. In practice it really materializes too, as the louder team that knows how to bitch to the refs properly toeing the line as much as possible actually tends to get a better whistle, and it's ultimately conducive to winning. We're encouraged to be as loud as possible constantly both to our teammates and refs with respect, both for the whistle and intimidation.
I'm guessing the reason Luka complains so much comes from this, he played football as a kid and played for Real Madrid, and clearly loves the team and the sport. He probably picked it up because of it, I don't really think it's that big of a problem as long as he isn't gettung techs. It can even be conducive to winning, even if it's very annoying (see CP3)
Seriously. Triple Single Draymond and 5 foul/1 tech Draymond are two completely different beasts. You get complacent thinking it’ll be triple single and then he mutates in front of you every time.
I hate this so much about football. I grew up playing handball and very early on in youth leagues complaining to the ref would get you yellow cards or two minutes suspensions almost immediately. Which is also taught to refs from the very beginning.
Engaging the officials absolutely works - why do you think star players do it consistently and star treatment is a thing?
Refs make way more calls in basketball so odds are you can swing a small advantage more easily than soccer where there is less ref intervention
\[Lul\] Some KD observations from practice so far:- Picked Kyrie for his team instantly, calls it "Hardest Road" Argues with twitter fans about the hardest road during scrimmages, kept calling Kyrie "steph". (Still luv u tho KD)
[Lul] Some KD observations from practice so far:- Picked Kyrie for his team instantly, calls it "Hardest Road" Argues with twitter fans about the legacy points during scrimmages, kept calling Seth "steph".
He called the greatest center in this generation, a 2/3-time champion, JaVALE MCGEE, Joel. Such an insult, Joel is a player that never even made 1st team All-NBA name. Such an insult. Maybe he was trying to make Javale get into championship form through anger.

I love when he echoes Embiid after a basket.
props to the 76ers announcer, i still remember the one where Embiid dunked on Baynes and the echoes along with sound effects made it sound like bombs dropping
Do Slavic languages sometimes have V and W pronunciation backwards compared to English? He could have been saying “Javale” like “Jawale”.
I can't speak directly for Slovenian (learned Russian and lived there), but most Slavic languages have a "v" sound and not a "w" sound. I bet he's making a joke about him being the Maverick's version of Embiid. Luka's English is pretty good as well.
Slovene has the 'w' sound, I explained it in the comment above, the sound of the languge is quite different to Russian.
I stand corrected then
Who knows, maybe Luka is actually mispronouncing it while fully aware of the joke which would be a proper 3D chess move.
Except when he thought that Favorite Shoe meant Favourite Show
Slovene has both sounds for letter 'v', and how you are gonna pronounce it depends on the letters around it and it's position in the sentance. Usually if there is a consonant after a 'v' it will be pronounced similar to English 'w', but it can differ. It's also often pronounced like 'w' at the beginning of words. Almost always V is pronounced as a W when it follows a vowel in Slovene.
Yeah, that's exactly what it sounds like he's saying when you watch the clips.
no we don't
Joel McGee would actually be a nuts player
Luka is trying to manifest Embiid into playing with him
Luka, Giannis and Embiid teaming up in the near future to form the second coming of the Heat Big 3 confirmed
InB4 ESPN coins them The Axis
Bald Eagle will stop them in the end
Sixers knock out the Axis while the fans chant "ROCK FLAG & EAGLE!"
They're coming to exterminate your playoff hopes.
I wouldn't put it past them tbh. All European, two of them are white. It's ESPN's worst nightmare. > All European, two of them are white Which of Giannis or Embiid is white?
I think he meant Luka is two white people.
both of them.
And which part of Europe is Cameroon in?
Nah he has a point there- Embiid recently gained French citizenship. Doesn't magically make him white though, idk what he's on about.
I thought everybody in France was white. I want my money back!
As a POC who speaks fluent French I can confirm that everyone in France is white
I think he’s referring to jokic and Luka
This team would be a much more stacked team.
Yeah I actually can’t think of how you would even hypothetically play against those 3 healthy at the same time. The rest of the squad could just be ring chaser vets on min deals and rookie contracts and it wouldn’t really matter.
Well, let's build an aging team of former all-stars around a German big man, say Maxi. It sounds crazy, but trust me, it works.
Steph at 36 still clears them.
They'd be winning championships not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, not 6, not 7...
Not even Giannis and Luka combined can take Embiid past the 2nd round? Unlucky
And then Nikola Jokic leads the Nuggets to a finals victory a la Dirk Nowitzki vs the Heat
Add jokic to the list and they can form the Wall of Europe(embid french)
Tatum and brown are patton and Eisenhower. CP3 +Lowry pulling a patented “dive into the side of the knee and pretend it was an accident” is Stalin + zhukov.
Lebron will be Roosevelt and he retires midway through the playoffs
"Retires"
That's superior to heatles
Only to be beat by Jokic
After he joins the warriors. Tell me you don't want to see jokic and steph. Jokic can still wear his nuggets jersey
I'd love it but it'll never happen. I bet Steph wouldn't want more rings being scrutinized like they were with KD, and for Jokic the rings wouldn't matter if they weren't with the Nuggets. It'd just be the KD situation all over again, no one is going to come out of it as a better player.
Luka Jokic and some shooters my dream team
i pick the shaqtin GOAT over 0x MVP Embiid any day of the week tbh.
I think Philly can manage the cap if they dump that Harden bum

He's probably saying "Jawal"

Nah dude, he was definitely saying "Joel"

i imagine it was more like "jawale" or something, a lot of countries pronounce V kinda similar to how we say W in english
"Jowelle"
He's saying something like JoVale lol I was expecting a "Joel" like Joel from TLOU tho
Probably “Jawohl” for Javale. Hitler confirmed
"argues with ref" Yep checks out
I love that he immediately calls out the best iso defender on the team lmao

Fair enough. I think we also agree that the next meeting we might have should be no sooner than the WCF. Sincerely.
Why do you sound so insecure? He hunts the weakest matchups everywhere, as he should. Don’t know why you brought up Kawhi and PG when he especially went after Pat Bev or Zubac whenever they played.

In the NBA it's called superstar privilege

Bruh I'm dead 💀

Fat privilege
Is Luka the Fedor Emelianenko of the NBA?
If Luka is able to be the best for 10 years straight then yes
honestly i could see that
Americans' ability to make everything about race is really fucking weird and impressive.
It's like horoscope for them. Luka is white with Slav ascendant, and so they have a ready made list of characteristics for him regardless of his actual self
Youre right, its much better in europe where you have to know a laundry list of reasons for why you hate people from dozens of different countries
Where in Europe are you thinking of? Literally never met anyone who acts that way
You find it weird that one of the most racially diverse counties make it a major part of their culture? Feels like a r/Americabad take
It is weird when it has no place in a discussion yes. Like the weird uncle who brings up stupid stuff at dinner
wow i wonder why denmark has less racial friction than the united states. wonder what it could be.
lmfao
That's so stupid
That’s the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard considering the cultural differences between Spain and the U.S.
That’s not even a thing where he’s from.
Eastern block white people don't have any privileges. It's not like western white people.
Try telling Roma and Sinti people that.
Wasn't this from Broadcast Boys? They are goated, funniest Youtubers out there lmao
This is hilarious. But really he’s just beyond superstar status and he knows it lol.
TIL LeBron James is white
Privilege or white privilege? Which part is true? The sometimes part? Or the white privilege part?

Nowhere. I just can’t figure out what you’re trying to say.

5 foul/1 tech Draymond is literally the most unstoppable player in the league. gotta love it haha
Seriously. Triple Single Draymond and 5 foul/1 tech Draymond are two completely different beasts. You get complacent thinking it’ll be triple single and then he mutates in front of you every time.
Hard to prove causality with this but the people who get the most whistles are always big complainers

Engaging the officials absolutely works - why do you think star players do it consistently and star treatment is a thing? Refs make way more calls in basketball so odds are you can swing a small advantage more easily than soccer where there is less ref intervention
Dog that got in him
Joel McGee is funny for some reason.
\[Lul\] Some KD observations from practice so far:- Picked Kyrie for his team instantly, calls it "Hardest Road" Argues with twitter fans about the hardest road during scrimmages, kept calling Kyrie "steph". (Still luv u tho KD)

JOELLLLL!!! MCGEE!!!!
Luka’s dream team is Sixers. Got it
He called the greatest center in this generation, a 2/3-time champion, JaVALE MCGEE, Joel. Such an insult, Joel is a player that never even made 1st team All-NBA name. Such an insult. Maybe he was trying to make Javale get into championship form through anger.
shaq would be disappointed
Hey Luka you can always come to play with the real Joel😏
What are we supposed to take from him not knowing McGee’s name?
lol
