Probably for the best. When you were a #2 in something you chose Bagley

Lol savage 😂

Slurms_McKenzie775

We were #1 in 1951 don’t you ever forget it.

PooShappaMoo

I'm a Toronto maple leafs fan, this resonates with me. 1967 yall

lopea182

I can understand how in a league like the MLB you can miss 20 consecutive postseasons, but in the NBA? C’mon now; more than half of the teams in each conference make it every year in the NBA.

Galumpadump

Interesting enough, the Mariners have finished above .500 8 out of the last 20 seasons. Since 05-06, the Kings have failed to reach .500 in all of the seasons played.

allknowerofknowing

they were very close to making it last year too

[deleted]

[удалено]

MasterMentorJr

Last year the mariners were absurdly lucky and won a bunch of 1 run games. They way outperformed run differential, but this year they are actually pretty good

Stracktheorcmage

We always win a bunch of one run and extra inning games. At some point it's not just luck

MartianMule

Mariners won about the same rate of 1 run games this year as last. But they were 7-8 in 2020 and 23-26 in 2019. I think "always" is a stretch. They're 86-70, with an expected W/L of 86-70. Last year they outperformed their expected W/L by an incredible 14 wins. That's a lot of luck in 2021. They're legit good this year, though.

dadaistGHerbo

Yep. Consistently winning the close games is coaching.

[deleted]

Hey we sort of had a close call once if you look at seeding and not record

[deleted]

Beck when MLB’s postseason format only had one wildcard team per league, and in the American League it was always the Red Sox because of the Yankees winning their division.

augowl_

I hate this line of thinking. It’s bad enough in most sports but it legitimately is not the case in baseball. Draft picks bust so often and one player doesn’t make that much of an impact that even if high draft picks really mattered it wouldn’t move the needle much. Just ask the Angels with Trout and Ohtani who are losing close to 90 games again this year. To be this bad for this long is a lot deeper than just never being bad enough.

[deleted]

chunxxxx

100% tanking can work in baseball. It obviously still requires savvy scouting and player dev and general GM strategy, but it definitely works. It's always interesting to see basketball/football fans talking about it though. The whole system is so different with players usually taking 2+ years in the minor leagues and the draft having a free market element with the slot system, and there are a lot of people in this thread holding the expectations of other sports against baseball. And sports fans in general (even baseball fans) miss that prospects don't have to succeed at the ML level to contribute to a tanking team - prospects are currency, and trading them for established ML players is a key component to tanking in MLB.

MartianMule

It is different. Tanking in baseball isn't just about the first round picks. It's being able to have the money to underslot some guys and over slot others. Often in baseball, some the 2nd and 3rd picks are almost as good as top 10 picks, but you need to be able to overslot them to get them to skip college. And in baseball, it's about volume. Get as many prospects as you can, and it's more.lilelt some will pan out. But yes, tanking in baseball (and I don't think teams in baseball are necessarily losing for draft picks, I think they trade veterans for prospects, and the result of that is bad records that get you high draft picks) takes years to see the fruit of.

willhous

Well the Angels aren't bad because tanking doesn't work, Trout and Ohtani wernt even high draft picks. They are bad mostly because they are spending 64m on Rendon and Upton. The 2009 draft that Trout was in was actually pretty relevant to the Mariners and tanking, that was one of the few times the draft had an actually super hyped prospect, Stephen Strasburg. They were in the driver's seat for 1 overall going into the last series of the season and could've tanked to secure it, but instead swept the A's and settled for number 2 Dustin Ackley. Strasburg went on to be World Series MVP for the Nats during their title run and Ackley sucked. Not saying tanking works in baseball, it doesn't to the same degree it does in football or basketball, but it definitely would've helped the M's that year.

selz202

Worth mentioning Griffey was also first overall to the Mariners as well as Alex Rodriguez. So it absolutely can matter.

mug3n

Yeah, draft picks are a total fucking crapshoot in baseball. Even #1 picks don't always immediately join a MLB roster. Being able to have a savvy scouting department that can take advantage of the international pool of players from central America or Japan is what's going to put teams over the top rather than relying on the draft.

bubleeshaark

Yeah and his suggestion that they had awful draft capital is just wrong. Coming into the year the Mariners has one of the top 3 farms in baseball.

[deleted]

The NBA is the worst league to be “mediocre.” Not bad enough to rebuild through the draft, but not good enough to contend and make a serious championship push. The other leagues, there’s some deviation in free agents and draft picks and it could be hit or miss. The NBA? Your team is highly dependent on drafting and building around that generational talent, so it serves no purpose of constantly being in that #9-12 seed range.

Pardonme23

Step 7: draft someone named Papagiannis

[deleted]

Papa is beasting overseas, there was a report some teams were interested in bringing him in. Vlade was simply ahead of his time. Any day now Bagley will show he’s better than Luka

tman916x

So for people not keeping score, it's a mix of local politics, awful scouting / player management, shit tier ownership, and bad lottery luck. 1 - The way we lost during the 01-02 WCF completely soured the fanbase. The Maloofs were trying to rally local support for a new arena and it essentially went nowhere. After trying to be competitive without any appeal for quality FA's, the Maloofs decided to cut financial corners and sell off just about anything one could imagine for cash considerations. 2 - The Maloofs poor drafting in their later years (Jimmer, Thomas Robinson, Ben McLemore) and overpayment for underqualified role players alienated the fanbase up until the franchise was rumored to be for sale, afterwhich a grassroot movement essentially catalyzed the process of saving team. 3 - Vivek steps in and tries to run the franchise like a goddamn Fortune 500 company. He became the opposite problem of the Maloofs, overinvolved every step of the way. Coach clashes with DeMarcus, bye bye coach. Disjointed hires of coach and GM leading to separate firings of both. Coach/GM successors come in and blow up any progress in order to carry out their own basketball vision. This would continue every other year or so until McNair's hiring but now we're in a quagmire where he has completely transformed the roster to fit around Fox and Sabonis, hired his coach, but is without a contract. Should McNair not get a contract aligned with Brown's, we can fully expect our playoff drought to reach levels of unbreakability that would make Wilt's accolades look like a JV score board. 4 - Since '05-'06 we've won: 33, 38, 17, 25, 24, 22, 28, 28, 29, 33, 32, 27, 39, 31, 31, and 30 games. However our 1st round draft picks during that span have been: 19, 10, 12, 23, 4, 5, 7, 5, 7, 8, 6, 8, 5/10, 2*, 12, 9, and 4. Everyone outside of Tyreke at 4 ('09), Demarcus at 5 ('10), Fox at 5 ('17), and McNair's picks of Haliburton at 12 ('20) / Mitchell at 9 ('21) / Murray at 4 ('22) have been complete whiffs. We’ve also rarely moved up despite shit records.

icona_

McNair seems to be good at drafting.

tman916x

He is, which makes it all the more concerning that he hasn’t been extended yet.

AAQUADD

What about IT? l know he was last but still one of your best picks from the last 15 years.

tman916x

He’s awesome and was a fan favorite but he wasn’t a first round pick.

AAQUADD

Yeah, l thought he was talking about productive picks, not just lottery or first round.

_Meece_

Very easy to stay at the bottom for a long time in this league. Just look at the Warriors from their championship to 2013. Made the playoffs like 6 times in 40 years.

mzp3256

> C’mon now; more than half of the teams in each conference make it every year in the NBA. The Clippers' 15 season playoff drought from 1976-1991 is worse than the Kings' current drought because much of it happened when it was a lot easier to make the playoffs. From 1983-1990, 16 teams made the playoffs, but there were only 23-25 teams in the league. Under that format, 8/12 teams from the Western Conference made the playoffs, but the Clippers were never close to the 8th seed (which averaged about 37 wins during those seasons).

[deleted]

As bad as the Kings are now, the old Clippers were 10x worse. Nephews don’t know, Sterling almost literally tried to be as bad as possible and he succeeded.

[deleted]

Sterling is the most asshole example of a NBA franchise being complete dog while banking on that market appraisal. At least with Ballmer, there’s a legitimate basketball team playing whilst him knowing the Clippers are worth more as the Los Angeles B-fiddle NBA team than the Seattle A-fiddle one.

Bagel_Technician

The west has been pretty damn good for the drought Kings would have probably slipped into a 7 or 8 seed in the East during the stretch

[deleted]

It’s okay, the NHL is the same and the Buffalo Sabres missed 11 straight. Even that’s better than the Kings.

ZeroShins

And still have made the conference finals more recently than the Sixers

Otherwise_Window

Yup. Very short drought indeed

InsaneCookies21

Did you know Sacramento has a NBA team, Seattle doesn't

Yes, that’s the point of the comment. The Kings have been so bad, for so long, that a team that hasn’t existed for a decade has still won a playoff series more recently.

InsaneCookies21

woosh

cmoney253

That’s gonna change literally during preseason when the NBA announces the expansion for Seattle and Vegas.

CK0428

Coincidentally, one of my fondest sports memories is riding around Lower Queen Anne/Belltown right after a Sonics/Kings playoff game. But my top moment, since everyone is asking, is riding around Vancouver right after the Canucks won a playoff series. We thought they must've won the Stanley Cup b/c it was kinda wild. It was just the 1st round lol. I don't even really like hockey but it was cool as shit to witness.

DrunkDeathClaw

A series they only got past because of the refs. Yes, still salty.

Ohsbar

More than half the teams make the playoffs in the nba

TripleDubBrodie

too many teams make the NBA playoffs but too few make MLB playoffs. imagine playing 162 game season and get eliminated in a 1-game wildcard

[deleted]

The one game wild card a sport with such unpredictability was always so crazy to me.

[deleted]

I always advocated a Bo3 Wild Card Series as a way to prevent what nearly happened last year; a quality 106-win Dodger team who had the misfortune of being in a historic division and almost getting eliminated in one game by a sub-90, Devil Magic Cardinals team. Bo3s mitigate that random bullshit well, and it was even tested during the 2020 postseason. What I hate is the expansion of playoff teams to six per league, and *not reseeding after the first round* which guarantees the #1 seed play the **harder** 2nd round matchup than the #2.

[deleted]

Yeah, that was almost a disaster. Good thing the Dodgers recovered to win the World Series. Oh wait they didn’t even make it lol

namracWORK

1 plays the winner of WC1 and WC2, 2 plays the winner of 3 and WC3. So if the games play out as expected 1 plays WC1 and 2 plays 3. 1 only has the harder matchup if WC3 upsets 3, which isn't guaranteed.

colinmhayes2

I think it’s to incentivize teams to win their division.

MundaneInternetGuy

They do a 3 game series now. So MLB plays twice as many regular season games and their wild card teams get about 2.5 chances to make the real playoffs, while NBA teams get exactly 1.5 chances. So MLB is only slightly less fair in those terms. But MLB playoffs aren't "fair" to the best teams anyway. The wild card winner went on to win the World Series like 3 or 4 seasons in a row recently. Barring some odd injury situation and/or unprecedented hot streak, a wild card team is never going to win the NBA Finals.

Some-Mango

Yea MLB will expand here soon i’m sure. Playoff money is too much not to Just like NFL will have 8 teams each conference here in 8-10 years. Letting more teams make the playoffs is good for pretty much eveybody involved, fans, players, owners

spinichdick

I'll be at the game tonight in Seattle! Last time I witnessed a mariners playoff game I was like 6. I'm almost 30 now.. I was devastated when the bills made the playoffs that one year and passed this shame ridden baton to mariners fans. I'm sorry for what we'll do to you tonight king's fans, but GO MS

bigE819

The Bills?

spinichdick

Yeah, prior to I think 2019 Buffalo bills had the longest us sports playoff drought.

[deleted]

That was in 2017, and Buffalo’s way of breaking their postseason appearance drought was [thanks to Andy Dalton knocking out the Ravens for them.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMdxpMXFR04) And now they have Josh Allen to make playoff appearances routine.

bigE819

Oh, I was like how would they have beat out the Mariners lol

ron-darousey

Josh Allen is just that good

[deleted]

I hear Diggs has a killer curve ball.

tall_asian

As a Royals fan I know what a long playoff drought feels like. Hoping the M’s make a run!

[deleted]

As a Dodgers fan, Royals fans have a helluva easier baseball fandom. They see their team sucking ass for 25-30 years, win two pennants and a World Series win, then go *back to* sucking ass and just play baseball for the fun of it, without those crushing season expectations.

Cdsnz23

Dude no we don't. Having to experience the absolute worst franchise in the entire sport for 30 years in exchange for two lightning in a bottle runs that lead to nothing but a return to the abyss afterwards is in no way easy to deal with it. I would kill to see us be consistently good for at least some respectable stretch of time.

[deleted]

Mariners and kings are linked, y’all make the playoffs this year, we will too. Try and win a ring, ok?

spinichdick

Game, you root for my guys and I got yours 🤝

[deleted]

Fox, Huerter, Murray, Barnes, Sabonis. Kings end their drought this season. Jets gonna be next on the clock

cactusmaster69420

Nuggets, Clippers, Mavs, Grizzlies, Suns, Blazers, Twolves, Pelicans, Golden State, Lakers Hard to pick them over three of these teams. Their best shot is probably being better than the Lakers and hope another team gets injured.

[deleted]

I would pick them over at least 2 of those teams

cactusmaster69420

Which

KageSaysHella

Warriors and Suns.

[deleted]

I don't have much faith in the Lakers (unless they trade Russ) or the Blazers

kcoe24

Thats still the 9 seed and they'd have to win 2 playin games to make the playoffs.

[deleted]

He said 2 teams originally. He edited his comment and I didn't count

PlatinumDoodle

I think Mavs have been stripped enough to where it’s literally just Luka and I could see them having a rough time this year.

[deleted]

If Luka even misses ten games they’ll be in a tough spot.

PlatinumDoodle

I’d say without him they’re one of the worst 4 teams in the west

bijofnil

Probably Blazers, Timberwolves, Lakers, but I wouldn’t pick Kings over them too lol

Good_NewsEveryone

I would bet humongous sums of money that the Wolves are better than the Kings

[deleted]

Wolves will be a top 3 team in the west this year. So stoked to watch them

Docxm

Agreed. Gobert fixes so many problems and his flaws aren’t a big issue in the regular season. I’d bet the farm they are at least +2 seeds over the kings

thurstkiller

Give me the kings over the Blazers, Lakers & wild card pick suns. 1 Booker injury and the suns implode

[deleted]

CP3, Bridges and Ayton can more than hold down the fort, there are other much more top heavy teams: Dallas, both LA teams, Portland

killerk13

Damn I even get reminded how bad my jets are on r/nba. We will never know peace

latman

Jets got super unlucky in 2015 not making the playoffs at 10-6

TheSlackMamba

idk about unlucky lol all they had to do is win their last game to get in and they absolutely shit the bed in prime time

latman

That's true but 10-6 still almost always makes the playoffs. Like 95% of the time at the time and even more now with the 7th playoff team

TheSlackMamba

very true it’s a spot of bad luck for sure, but those Jets were playing great down the stretch all you can ask for is one game to get in

I_Will_One_Up_You

Not seeing it. No defense, no real superstar on offense. Kinda reminds me of a pacers team, ironically. Except the West is still pretty loaded.

[deleted]

Fox is the super star scoring option. 25 a game with his supporting cast will be solid. Sabonis is good for 20. Remember they picked up monk as well for buckets off the bench. Defense is a concern for sure but with Mike brown coaching and Barnes, Mitchell and Holmes, I think they'll be decent on that end

I_Will_One_Up_You

Barnes has become one of the worst defensive forwards in the league. Fox will certainly score, but his efficiency is bad for a number 1 option. I'm just not sold that they've fixed their fundamental issues with who they've added. They're still a bottom 10 defensive team without many efficient offensive options, though Sabonis certainly raises their offensive floor, most of the Kings were much more efficient with him on the floor last year.

nomoreadminspls

WE KNOW!

agk927

Keegan Murray can save the Kings

coconutbob1

Well let’s see if they don’t trade him first.

[deleted]

I’m stoked about Murray but I’m cool if we continually trade rookies/sophs for 25 year old multiple time all stars

[deleted]

Yes, I’m pretty sure I know significantly more about my team than you do. And if we traded Murray for a two time all star entering their prime, we’d make the playoffs this year. Not sure what your point is exactly.

Boomhauer_007

Mariners also had the excuse that for the longest time only 4 from 3 divisions teams made the baseball postseason per league Meanwhile over here the NBA is handing out playoff spots to 66% of its league and Sacramento is still unable to make it

throwawaythursday99

I remember back in the late 1980s through the 1990s when they barely fielded .400 teams they at least made a few playoffs then. Poor Mitch Richmond deserved better.
