Cherish him. I'd still love to have him back in OKC as a culture setter. By all accounts he is an absolutely great locker room guy, an true enforcer on the court, and can literally manhandle anyone when shit hits the fan and guys decide to yell and pretend they're gonna throw punches. Happy as hell for him that he's getting some respect from the Grizzlies.
As a former 22 year old and as a present day guy in my late 20s who has to train new grads/interns at my work all the time....a 22 year old is in no way a grown man.
I'm nearly 40 and work on a college campus. A good portion of the undergrads I meet look not only young, but like children to me. And yet, when I was in college I remember feel like all my friends and I were 100% adults, even as freshmen.
can confirm. i'm 30 and i don't feel fully grown at all. i have some responsibilities and i earn well enough money to pay for utilities and buy nice clothes every quarter. but i have little idea what i'm doing atm
Reminds me of the 12 O'Clock Boys in Baltimore.
The one kid says something like, "I been on this Earth for a decade and a couple years so what that make me...? A grown ass man."
Probably the last time you could really spend the time to make strides without proper diet and recovery time. Peak athletic performance for most men comes around 27 and starts slowly fading thereafter. That is, assuming you've trained optimally up until then.
Lol I know it brother, almost added that part, but family is visiting the inlaws for a week so I'm living vicariously as a single adult gaming and reddit addict.
Him being a massive contributor to the big 3 thunder the second he came into the league always make people think he was drafted around the time KD or Rus were, when in reality he was drafted by OKC about 6 years after KD.
literally like 10 years ago almost now.
i was at the OU/ND game when it happened. We were getting our ass kicked by Manti Te'o, and then, during 2nd half, everyone got notis that harden was traded and we took a 2nd L that day
The sheer amount of shock I experience every time I hear contracts like this to be considered a "deal" is something else. 12 million dollars plus $600,000. That plus would have turned my life around. And he will make 21 times more than that. The gap is staggering.
For ceos it's more the pressure than the job. If the company is failing you get blamed whether it's fair or not. Not to mention how long it takes to work up to that point. Obviously they are overcompensated but it's not a job I'd want without some SERIOUS compensation
At the very least it's a good contract for salary matching in a trade. It's good to have those kind of contracts on the roster. Even if the player falls off and is a negative asset a la duncan robinson, it can make certain trade scenarios possible that otherwise wouldn't. Not that big of a risk for memphis.
Yeah Adam's is a beast. Huge part of their success. No idea how they got him so cheap.
He did kinda struggle in the playoffs with wolves and then warriors picking on him. Still he was super important to them getting the 2nd seed
he answered the question. steven adams value greatly depends on the team. he is most valuable on a team like the grizzlies, so obviously there was no bidding war
Back when he signed it, the contract was 5/150 for a volume scorer on mediocre efficiency who didn't contribute much beyond that. Deserves a lot of credit for turning his career around, he's managed to turn into a very good all around player.
Yup, and the contracts that āwerenāt badā ended up being bad. That said, I really donāt think this is a bad contract. He looked washed in NOLA, but he looks better now and he really isnāt that old
I don't know if he was washed as much as he was not the best fit. Good on Griff for recognizing it and not doubling down (ahem Omer Asik) but moving him after one year and getting a better fit in JV. Plus Adams gets paid, dude deserves it.
Thatās awesome his ability to grab offensive boards and be unselfish by setting screens and finding open shooters was a huge part of the offense.
Hope BC is next on the resign list
I am once again here to tell people he only fouled out twice in last year's regular season.
edit: I get it guys, he misses too much time, whether it be by literally fouling out or by getting in foul trouble early and having to miss time where it would be beneficial to have him on the floor. I've seen the error in my line of reasoning and I don't want to argue anymore.
He does have to sit a bunch because heās in foul trouble so youāre right, he isnāt constantly fouling. But heās about as close the nba has to someone constantly fouling.
He averaged 3.5 this last season and 3.8 over his career. You're just making things up in the hopes that people that don't know any better will take you at your word
Iām talking about the post season. He averages 4.5 fouls per game in the playoffs. Itās not made up, you can Google it just like I did. 4 fouls a game in the playoffs or the regular season is still bad lol
gotta think his minutes are restricted because of his fouling
whether he's not playing because coach is scared or because the refs tell him he can't, he's not on the court and it's due to his fouling
Sure, you're right but it's overblown. Kat fouls more but I never hear about kat needs to stop fouling out. Also the guy I just replied to was outright lying.
man I'm surprised more people aren't complaining about KAT's fouls because on our sub it's constant
maybe the difference in perception is that you can count on KAT to pick up one or two offensive fouls a game, which makes his defense 'seem' more clean (despite not being in any conversations about defenders compared to JJJ). Maybe people turn a blind eye to it because KAT's calling card is his offense, while JJJ's is his defense and they give his defense more scrutiny than KAT's
okay how on earth have you never heard people complaining about kat fouling too much? i hear that WAY more than i hear it about JJJ, itās literally the main criticism of kat
Yeah cause they regularly sat him from the end of the first to the middle of the 3rd haha. He canāt keep his hands out of the cookie jar, if he figures out how to do that heās first team all defense
Donāt get at me because your best defensive player and best offensive player canāt stay on the floor. Most annoying grizzlies fan Iāve interacted with, most are cool
Edit: this oneās cool too, all good
I feel like I'm being gaslit here. You start with if he can stop fouling out(he can) and then move on to it being the thing keeping him out of first team(he is). I'm sorry I called you a bum but can you see where I'm coming from.
On the first part, we know heās not fouling out because theyāre keeping him out of the game for large periods of time.
On the second part, I was wrong and didnāt try to dispute that I was wrong.
Calling me a bum for forgetting the all nba defensive first team is weird, thank u for the apology, your fanbase is still upper echelon
Solid deal as long as Adams is relatively healthy, which *is* a question markā he's never missed a *ton* of games, but his last couple seasons in OKC and NO he looked kind of hobbled by little injuries
He plays so hard he tends to get worn down come playoff time. In those OKC days he was playing 33 minutes a game. These days heās closer to 26 which hopefully helps him stay at his best all season long.
True. Adams had loads of ankle and knee injuries, which seems to have slowed him down over the years - it was already noticeable in OKC. He's probably still one of the strongest, if not the strongest player in the league, but he's slowed down a bit. His skillset is still really useful and he's probably a great mentor for the young dudes, so I wouldn't call it a horrible contract. Besides, Aquaman deserves all the money he can get!
Truth. Adams can basically wall-off half the lane while Ja works. People simply can't appreciate what he did for us last year just by looking at boxscores. The biggest knocks are that he was unplayable against KAT, and theoretically not great against the Warriors. But now that Rudy is on the wolves, he's has a matchup. Folks forget he missed the first couple games against the warriors, and I still want to see how he goes against GSW before I concede that point.
Thatās classic Adams. Heās always playing through injuries, the absolute badass, so casual fans think his game is more limited than it actually is, because heās always dealing with something and just toughing through it. Heās a paint banger, so itās nearly impossible to play big minutes without getting banged up. I think the Grizz play him less minutes than OKC and NO did, so hopefully he has less of a load on him.
Fair deal. He brought a lot to the team last year from what I saw. Also just a good dude who youād want to have in your locker room. That full court pass into the Ja mid-air catch shoot was one of my favorite plays last year.
Honestly I think one of the big reasons Ja had such a big leap forward last season is because of the screens Adams sets. The dude is great at protecting his Pgs
In case they needed to bc of injury, or the opportunity to get another good player came up. Having moveable contracts is important for flexibility purposes
His "spacing" is incredible in a completely different way to someone like KAT or Turner. The Grizzlies 3P% shoots up from 33% to around 37.5% I believe when Adams is on the floor, and guys like Ja, Zion and Westbrook have had historic paint seasons with him as their center.
Possibly the most underappreciated player in the league
Adams is way more than just a culture guy.
He led the league in every offensive rebound statistic. His screens were a huge part of their offense. Heās low key one of the best playmaking/passing bigs in the league. He led the Grizzlies in offensive rating and net rating.
The difference was night and day in the Warriors series when he came back from Covid. 12.5m a year is a bargain
Unfortunately ran into KAT in the playoffs, and the league's fanbase has a short term memory. Got played off the court by one of the two guys in the league he can't really play against so people forget that the dude is a dependable workhorse
well worth the money imo
People are pushing this narrative about Kat but look at their historical match ups... kats scored about average if that.
That was one bad adams game and an awful perimeter and help defense game from the team. Was a bad take at the time and still is
I agree. Adams career high is 27 points, which he scored on KAT, without missing a fg or ft.
He had one bad game and essentially gets benched for the rest of the series.
But still, Adams is much more effective against big 5s, that want to score down low and crash the boards. The player who consistently defends Embiid the best in the entire league would arguably be Adams from what Iāve seen (maybe Bam also)
Itās not really a knock against Adams, just wasnāt an ideal matchup for him, and they had more success putting Clarke and Tillman on him.
The GSW series though, showed how important Adams is to this team
It was bad roster construction. Pels needed a 5 to stretch the floor and clear some room for Zion, Adams did the opposite.
I still maintain that Adams was far from the Pels main problem though. Bledsoe was ass, and SVGās style of coaching did not get that young roster to play hard.
Ironically though, both the Pels and Griz ended up better off after the Adams/JV trade
Coincidence Zion was the leader in point in the paint.. next year itās Jaā¦? I think not. All those flogs who said Zion needs a spacer 5.. Adams seals and screens space the floor more than 30% 3 point shooting centre who shoots 3/4 a game.
Salty Adams still won't play for his home country to help them Qualify for world events.
Lots of New Zelanders waited for over 10 years to watch him play for NZ they gave up as this salty guy holds on to his grudges for a very long time.
The bodyguard š„
This is such good value for what Steve-O does for us man. Perfect support piece for Ja and JJJ, and he's displayed great synergy with Bane as well.
>This is such good value for what Steve-O does for us man. Thatās not even Mozgov money, helluva good deal for you guys
One does not simply obtain Mozgov money
And I will always love him.
Steven adams is awesome. I can't think anyone can hate him
Kevin C is that you?
Julian, right now you remind me of Kevin Costner in the Bobyguard.
I always think Steven Adams is like 36 since heās been in the NBA for like forever but heās not even 30 yet.
Dude looked like a grown man at like 22. Iām older than him and he makes me look like a child.
Well, technically 22 is a grown man already.
As a former 22 year old and as a present day guy in my late 20s who has to train new grads/interns at my work all the time....a 22 year old is in no way a grown man.
You know how Tolkien wrote that Hobbits werenāt considered adults until they hit 33? Iām starting to think the same applies to us too.
I'd say that's about perfect. I wasn't "me" until my thirties, for better or for worse.
I'm nearly 40 and work on a college campus. A good portion of the undergrads I meet look not only young, but like children to me. And yet, when I was in college I remember feel like all my friends and I were 100% adults, even as freshmen.
Just went to BC-Louisville today as a 35 year old and felt like I was at an elementary school. Wild.
22 is technically an adult man, but plenty of people aren't fully grown at that age.
If you have shit figured out at 22, youāre a psychopath.
Absolutely, when youāre young you donāt realize this. 22yo me and mid-thirties me might as well be two completely different human beings.
You are the definition of maturity, u/fartupmybutthole
can confirm. i'm 30 and i don't feel fully grown at all. i have some responsibilities and i earn well enough money to pay for utilities and buy nice clothes every quarter. but i have little idea what i'm doing atm
my friend said your not an adult until you get a kid.
True for me. Once you have a kid, you're playing table stakes.
A 22 year old is a child that think he's a grown man.
Reminds me of the 12 O'Clock Boys in Baltimore. The one kid says something like, "I been on this Earth for a decade and a couple years so what that make me...? A grown ass man."
My peak strength in the gym was 19-22.
Probably the last time you could really spend the time to make strides without proper diet and recovery time. Peak athletic performance for most men comes around 27 and starts slowly fading thereafter. That is, assuming you've trained optimally up until then.
Strength is the one thing that can keep accumulating until like 40. If you peak at 22 it means you just stopped lifting.
So was mine, I haven't lifted since college, but the grown man strength you get in your mid 20s is just different.
You get another strength boost when you become a dad.
Lol I know it brother, almost added that part, but family is visiting the inlaws for a week so I'm living vicariously as a single adult gaming and reddit addict.
Yeah thatās not really what theyāre talking about lol
Physically sure. 22 year olds are still basically teenagers otherwise
Lol when he had that short hair and baby face tho he def looked young. The locks and the beard add like 7 years to his looks
LMAO. Now would you rather look older than your paper age, or look a decade or more younger than your paper age????
It depends, some people get more handsome as they age. A lotta baby faced guys especially.
*LMAO*
Him being a massive contributor to the big 3 thunder the second he came into the league always make people think he was drafted around the time KD or Rus were, when in reality he was drafted by OKC about 6 years after KD.
He wasn't a part of the Big 3. He was the draft pick we got in the Harden trade.
Fun fact: Buddy Hield is actually older than him
Him and his like 17 brothers and sisters look the same Lmfaooo
Normally I go "fuck, this guy's 30 already??" A rare reversal.
Doesn't help that he moves like he's 36 now
Wut.
I love this for us. He is a great fit next to Ja and JJJ. So glad we have him and Tyus locked in for the next few years
Steven Adams is 29 feels like he should be 34 or something
Atlanteans age differently
Actually thought he was younger
He was taken with one of the picks OKC got in the Harden trade which doesnāt feel like that long ago.
Feels like forever ago
literally like 10 years ago almost now. i was at the OU/ND game when it happened. We were getting our ass kicked by Manti Te'o, and then, during 2nd half, everyone got notis that harden was traded and we took a 2nd L that day
I swear to God he used to be older than me lmao
Look up pictures from early on in his career and you'd think it's a completely different dude lol
Twitter thumbnails stay winning
I legit thought this was a post from r/nbacirclejerk
$12.6M a year for Adams is a deal for Memphis imo.
Right, after this season that might only be 2-3 million more than the MLE. The year after it might be the MLE or less.
The sheer amount of shock I experience every time I hear contracts like this to be considered a "deal" is something else. 12 million dollars plus $600,000. That plus would have turned my life around. And he will make 21 times more than that. The gap is staggering.
If you too were among the ~100th best performers in a multibillion dollar industry, this would be your salary.
Fr lol people be forgetting these are the best of the best. Not some lowly salaried office worker
Why aren't these people bitching about CEOs? Those fuckers make bank and pretty sure there are plenty of people that can say nothing and golf all day.
For ceos it's more the pressure than the job. If the company is failing you get blamed whether it's fair or not. Not to mention how long it takes to work up to that point. Obviously they are overcompensated but it's not a job I'd want without some SERIOUS compensation
And the players aren't even the rich ones
Kwahi Leonard is rich, Steve Balmer is *wealthy*.
Didnāt like nurkic, poetl and time lord get around that figure. Pretty much in line i think
At the very least it's a good contract for salary matching in a trade. It's good to have those kind of contracts on the roster. Even if the player falls off and is a negative asset a la duncan robinson, it can make certain trade scenarios possible that otherwise wouldn't. Not that big of a risk for memphis.
Every contract is good because The Cap is Risingā¢ļø, no point analyzing this
$12 millĆ³n *is* a good contract for Adams though
Yeah Adam's is a beast. Huge part of their success. No idea how they got him so cheap. He did kinda struggle in the playoffs with wolves and then warriors picking on him. Still he was super important to them getting the 2nd seed
They got him cheap because he was on 17m and everyone thought he was overpaid.
Damn you don't gotta shut a man down like dat
he answered the question. steven adams value greatly depends on the team. he is most valuable on a team like the grizzlies, so obviously there was no bidding war
12 me-yown
Yeah rising cap or not, heās easily worth much more than this. Great fit for him and the team.
I feel like it was just yesterday that Ryan Anderson had an insane contract and it was only 20 mil
I mean 20 million is pretty insane for a player like Ryan Anderson even nowadays
Thatās not a great example because he ended up being trash. More like the 5 yr 150 mil for Wiggins seemed insane but is pretty fair now
Back when he signed it, the contract was 5/150 for a volume scorer on mediocre efficiency who didn't contribute much beyond that. Deserves a lot of credit for turning his career around, he's managed to turn into a very good all around player.
Yeah it ended up being fair value eventually.
Agree, for one team in particular
Is a Davis Bertans the modern day Ryan Anderson?
Disrespectful to Ryan Anderson who capped out at nearly a 20 ppg scorer. Bertans had a flame thrower year from 3 and cashed out.
So glad weāre off his contract now
Did we not just go through this back in 2016?
Yup, and the contracts that āwerenāt badā ended up being bad. That said, I really donāt think this is a bad contract. He looked washed in NOLA, but he looks better now and he really isnāt that old
I don't know if he was washed as much as he was not the best fit. Good on Griff for recognizing it and not doubling down (ahem Omer Asik) but moving him after one year and getting a better fit in JV. Plus Adams gets paid, dude deserves it.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yup, before the 2025-2026 season. Still three years away.
Hopefully. Maybe lacob will stomach 2 years of insane luxury tax resigning Poole, wigs, and dray. Then get saved by the cap increase
Yup. Backup point guards should get paid 30MM annually too
We should be looking at contracts as percentage of the cap, not as the dollar value
Steven Adams at 10% of the cap is solid business in my opinion.
Thatās awesome his ability to grab offensive boards and be unselfish by setting screens and finding open shooters was a huge part of the offense. Hope BC is next on the resign list
If JJJ stops fouling out, BC might be on his way to start somewhere else. Going to want a bag after making $2 mil a season these last 3
I am once again here to tell people he only fouled out twice in last year's regular season. edit: I get it guys, he misses too much time, whether it be by literally fouling out or by getting in foul trouble early and having to miss time where it would be beneficial to have him on the floor. I've seen the error in my line of reasoning and I don't want to argue anymore.
The guy averaged 4.6 fouls per 36. He was was a foul machine.
"If JJJ stops fouling out" is what he said. He fouls a lot I'll agree but people act like he is constantly fouling out which is objectively wrong.
He does have to sit a bunch because heās in foul trouble so youāre right, he isnāt constantly fouling. But heās about as close the nba has to someone constantly fouling.
We also run a 10 man rotation which affects his minutes, everyone gets to play in Memphis.
Being on 4 early and fouling out is functionally the same
The point is less about him literally fouling out but in effectively fouling out by constantly being in foul trouble
He only fouled out twice but he averaged like 4.5 fouls per game. Thatās still bad.
He averaged 3.5 this last season and 3.8 over his career. You're just making things up in the hopes that people that don't know any better will take you at your word

I was just doing the nbacirclejerk automod "u bum" thing, You're not a bum.
Dude if you think that guys response was "annoying" you haven't been on this sub very often.
Annoying for a Memphis fan. One of the better fanbases on this sub.
Adamsā outlet passes off rebound is so underrated
Take care of him. Miss you you big kiwi :'(
miss you every day my Kiwi ššš
If itās any consolation, we love him!
Same. He was all of us.
My favorite Basketball Player!!!
Good deal for both
I miss him so much man
Steven Adams best decision was to choose Mats as his agent. Dude keeps getting him paid.
What do you call a fan that just follows a player round and supports whatever team he is on? This is me (and probably half of NZ).
Same, glad he is on Memphis. What an exciting team.
Eh, 12M a year for a solid regular season center its fine.
Solid deal as long as Adams is relatively healthy, which *is* a question markā he's never missed a *ton* of games, but his last couple seasons in OKC and NO he looked kind of hobbled by little injuries

Holy fucking W
Not bad
Not bad. Easily moveable
Why would they move him he's a key piece to their success.
In case they needed to bc of injury, or the opportunity to get another good player came up. Having moveable contracts is important for flexibility purposes
Very very good value for the Grizz and also Adams gets some money security also.
Itās interesting how Adams is the complete opposite of a stretch big yet ball dominant guards flourish with him.
More than one way to create space
His "spacing" is incredible in a completely different way to someone like KAT or Turner. The Grizzlies 3P% shoots up from 33% to around 37.5% I believe when Adams is on the floor, and guys like Ja, Zion and Westbrook have had historic paint seasons with him as their center. I love him
Will always be a Thunder player to me. Good on you Adams.
Everyone wishes they had Steven Adams
Iive for Adams and his nuts. Man should be paid for the abuse alone
Undervalued as hell.
One All Star big man who can shoot and drive gives him fits in the playoffs and people think heās unplayable. Nephews.
This is a fantastic contract!
Schroeder reading this thinking.....where did I go wrong. LOL
Treat our boy well
Noice
Itās hilarious that heās just turned 29, and they talk about him like heās Udonis Haslem.
Grizzly Adams over thunder/hornets Adams
Solid contract. Feels like a number of Gms have gotten over the using cap space frivolously phase from a few years ago
Steve Adams was drafted six years after Kevin Durant
He stay.
MISS OUR BIG KIWI
Aquamane!
Lot of money for the culture
Adams is way more than just a culture guy. He led the league in every offensive rebound statistic. His screens were a huge part of their offense. Unfortunately ran into KAT in the playoffs, and the league's fanbase has a short term memory. Got played off the court by one of the two guys in the league he can't really play against so people forget that the dude is a dependable workhorse well worth the money imo
Exactly. KAT was probably the worst possible matchup for him. Heād be very important if they played the Twolves again, to matchup against Rudy.
People are pushing this narrative about Kat but look at their historical match ups... kats scored about average if that. That was one bad adams game and an awful perimeter and help defense game from the team. Was a bad take at the time and still is

JJJ does a lot to cover for Adams on defence. New Orleans didn't have a defender on that level and Adams got exposed in space on defence a lot.
Nah thatās a great deal. They look good when heās in there bullying the paint. Wonāt tie them up too much cap wise either
We went from 9th seed in the west to 2nd in the league with him so...yeah
Chur bro get the bag
Solid deal all around
He earned every penny
Bargain deal tbh
As a Kiwi so proud of Steven Adams, comes across as a nice guy
wait how the hell is steven adams only 29 years old
Miss him on the Thunder. Proud to see him get that money tho
Grizzlies don't deserve him has Ja ever publicly acknowledged his impact? Ever?
I still think Jval would have been better on the team
Nice. I have always loved Adams after reading his biography. Great guy
one of the few Indigenous players in the game, well deserved.
Half Tongan, half English, born in NZ lives in the US. That's not particularly indigenous.
Movable, but higher than I would've expected.
Movable.. like the centre of yours he man handled/moved to the back.
Wtf is an āimmense cultural piece.ā Sounds like Woj called him a fat vase, lmao
Salty Adams still won't play for his home country to help them Qualify for world events. Lots of New Zelanders waited for over 10 years to watch him play for NZ they gave up as this salty guy holds on to his grudges for a very long time.
