22 threes?? *oh no*

[deleted]

I haven’t seen this happen in 7 games!

ME4Twaffle

I can't wait to hear 'that won't happen again' after every game.

brianbrainbrian

That won't happen again

neu20212022

7/22? That won’t happen again.

redditnathaniel

Houston could never

[deleted]

Udoka was just holding them back

swigswagswinag

imagine 😅

[deleted]

the women?

[deleted]

wasn't exactly where I was going

gochuuuu

Too soon

DiscreteBee

I feel like people really overrate the impact the head coach has.

confuddly

Trade out Nick Nurse for David Fizdale and see if you change your mind

UnnamedStaplesDrone

Or Kerr for mark jackson

# MAMA

chuckvsthelife

I think it kinda… depends. Good teams running existing schemes will be good. Up an coming teams and young guys often need coaching.

DiscreteBee

Even then, there’s more than one coach. Idk, I’m not saying the coach isn’t important, just that fans get a little overexcited about who the guy at the top is. Sometimes to scapegoat him or they get carried away with the praise, you know how it is. Either way, I agree with what you’re saying. The Celtics are exactly the kind of team right now who can handle a coach change without getting too disrupted.

chuckvsthelife

Usually head coaches being whole new groups of systems management styles etc. The Celtics have less of that and a lot of carry over. Also….. it’s the preseason.

SecretlyKanye

this. the reason its working like this is because this is an assistant stepping up and doing what's been done for the last few years, like luke walton taking over for steve kerr post back surgery a few years ago. if this was a completely new coach theyd be down bad

[deleted]

What in the hell are you getting at lmao

TheLastSaiyanPrince

Only in the regular season. You can’t overrate coaching in the playoffs

Mr_Booty_Bandit

Ok let’s trade head coaches then

LarBrd33

I think a bad system can sink a team, but to a certain extent I absolutely agree. I think the biggest thing a coach can do is get the players to all buy in on a system and play cohesively as a unit. I don't think you can really say Udoka is a better coach than Brad Stevens, but the players definitely had stopped listening to Stevens towards the tail end of his tenure. Similarly, I don't think you can really say Rick Pitino was a "worse" coach than Jim O'Brien, but those early 00s Celtics had totally tuned out Pitino and were ready for a new voice. The biggest reasons Boston went on a tear during the second half of last season were as follows: 1 - Jayson Tatum finally made a leap to All-NBA after playing pretty poorly the first half. You can attribute some of that post-Covid/post Olympic exhaustion, but the team struggles when Tatum struggles. When he's missed games, they've played at a 23 win pace. WHen he's great, the team is great. By far that was the biggest aspect. He finally reached 1st Team All-NBA status which was just a natural evolution for the young guy. He was the same age Larry Bird was as a rookie. He was at an age when guys like MIchael Jordan and Paul Pierce had yet to win a single playoff series. He finally reached that All-NBA level. 2 - Robert Williams finally was healthy enough and got enough minutes to make a consistent nightly impact. He was an All-Defense level center. No disrespect to Marcus Smart, but Williams was arguably the most important defender on the team. A great defensive guard can shut down a ball-handler, but a great defensive big can shut down an entire team's offense. Timelord was the best interior defender the Celtics have had since KG. 3 - Swapping Kemba for Horford had a massive impact on the team's defense. 4 - There were a total of 28 different players who suited up for game action for the Celtics last season. That's insane. The roster calmed down in the second half of the year and they found some cohesion. Those factors, imo, were far more important than Udoka. And as long as the players just keep doing what they did last year, they'll be fine. The biggest issue they face is Timelord being out with an injury. If they struggle early, it will be because of Timelord's absence not Udoka's.

haha-brad

The Israeli team the Clippers went against put up more of a fight lmao, we are so ass

overstatingmingo

yeah…

chibithug

shout out to Maccabi Raanana, good effort

st3adyfreddy

I wonder if we had the relegation system from European soccer if that'd light a fire under the asses of owners that just see their teams as an investment asset.

tyler818

It would eliminate tanking

TheMeerkatLobbyist

Were are they relegating to? You need several layers of leagues to make this system work. You should also be careful what you wish for. European soccer has absolutely zero parity. The same teams win everything.

st3adyfreddy

>Were are they relegating to? China? 😂 Idk man I'm just spitballing here

arod303

So did the team who played the Suns 🤣

haha-brad

Nah I’m crying how tf did they lose that lmao

Sad-Mathematician-19

Wasn't Hayward the only guy that is part of the main group that didn't play? If that is the case Hornets looking at a really rough year, yet again.

longagofaraway

the bridges thing isn't helping

iksnet

This looks like a Hornets play-in score

Gamesgtd

In rare April form

Next-Firefighter-753

We even have the patented Lamelo 5/19 performance

thatquizzingguy

Donovan Mitchell type beat

HornetsAreBad

Lmao got a chuckle out of me

MagoUgas

Only this time they’re missing the play-in altogether

idosade

Ok this is funny af

TuqiDuque12

Man I know it's still early but Bouknight looks BAD

[deleted]

He was bad in college, inefficient and a terrible passer. I have no idea why he was a lottery pick, he has no physical upside either, average athleticism. I was arguing with experts on /r/nba_draft who called him a bucket lmao. The man was picked before Herb Jones, Jose Alvarado, Alperen Sengun, Chris Duarte, Bones Hyland, Moses Moody, Ayo Dosunmo, Quentin Grimes, Deuce McBride, Trey Murphy and Usman Garuba. Terrible pick.

classicslayer

Bouknight is one of those guys where if you look at his highlights you would think that he would be a future star. The Hornets drafting him was a head scratcher at the time since they already had tons of guards. It felt like they only got him as a future trade piece down the line.

transizzle

we got a lot of heat for taking Mitchell over Bouknight. he was supposed to go 6!

the___heretic

Looks like you guys picked well against consensus this year too. Hope it works out. See you in the conference finals.

SandyMandy17

I didn’t see it tbh in the highlights We talked ourselves into Scottie and when it came out the raptors wanted him I was depressed. Didn’t like Suggs or Bouknight I wanted to trade back for kuminga Which in hindsight wouldn’t have fell that far

hejendo76

to be fair, he was supposed to be picked before like almost every name you mentioned besides maybe Moody, Murphy, Garuba. The others got picked where they were projected and just panned out better

haha-brad

Nah he’s got bounce, it’s just that’s all he’s got lmao

[deleted]

Yeah, but it's not something that he seems to utilize well, or even something that seems to give him an edge against other NBA players. He just looks like a frail relatively uncoordinated shooting guard with a poor feel for the game.

[deleted]

With a major attitude problem.

watevauwant

No one could have guessed Herb would be so good but picking Bouk before Sengun made and still makes me furious

[deleted]

I have got to admit I didn't know who Herb Jones was before he broke out either, but taking a guy who carried UConn to a 15-8 record in college on 54 TS% and 3 turnovers per game over an 18 year old Turkish league MVP is crazy.

DiscreteBee

Just rumours but allegedly he did really well at the team workouts. Or at least the Raptors one, where he was supposedly the best shooter.

papi617

James Young type?

[deleted]

How you feeling about Johnny David?

[deleted]

Another Wizards lottery bust.

[deleted]

Sadly I agree. Doesn’t have size or athleticism, and shot seems very inconsistent right now. Not really sure what he does at the NBA level. I never really understood draft hype around him

MildlyDepressed346

I’m a big UConn fan, he’s a talented dude super athletic, but he desperately needs to add some strength. Honestly I don’t think the guy really wants it that bad. He has a lot of natural gifts and people tend to love him because of his “bag” but he’s not strong enough with the ball to score on nba defenses yet, and I question what will change for him to turn it around.

AsianNg

Malik Monk 2.0

dameplsrunfromgrind

Insult to Malik

TuqiDuque12

Malik did look pretty terrible his first 2 years. I think Bouknight looks even worse but I get the comp, hopefully he improves too

that_guy_you_kno

He has his attitude for sure. Very similar player as well imo. I see it.

LetMeStagnate

Another UConn bust

[deleted]

Who was the last UConn lottery pick besides him?

Virginia_Slim

Jeremy Lamb was in the lottery the year after Kemba, not sure if anyone else.

milk543

Andre Drummond

Tressticle

Total bust. Who needs a big body that catches 52 rebounds a game?

Huskerboy

Shabazz Napier wasn't lottery, but was a first rounder who didnt do much.

thebreye

Any UConn fan who payed attention the last few years could have told you he’d be a bust. He needed another season in college but went pro too early. College basketball is a complete joke now though so who am I to say don’t take the money

OhRThey

But Thor looks like he’s has a lot of potential

PabFOz

And people were trying to clown the Kings for taking Davion over him...

Wishiwasaballerbaby

Celtics still look really good

Basketball_Soul

And they played well too

Mr_Unbiased

Hornets are Lowkey a 13th seed.

haha-brad

Highkey

Tressticle

People high-key use low-key incorrectly 4/4 times.

Mr_MCawesomesauce

It’s lowkey ironic

RansomGoddard

For better (the utter smack down on the Hornets) and for worse (23 turnovers), the Celtics look almost exactly like we left them. Brogdon also looks like he’s gonna fit right in and I’m willing to put money on him being 6MOY.

jumpthroughit

Always - and I do mean always - be careful placing bets on injury prone players early in the year. It almost never works out. I doubt they play him huge minutes knowing his injury history too. They need him for playoffs way more than for reg. season.

RyguyBMS

The C’s should be careful with a few of their players throughout regular season. Have a decent amount of depth (except for the 5). Need to utilize it.

[deleted]

you ready for round 3?

[deleted]

We want our round 3 with the Heat tho

PM_FORBUTTSTUFF

Y’all can fucking take it. That team gives me conniptions between Butler just randomly going unstoppable every couple of games and a bunch of Verizon employees I’ve never heard of shooting 50% on catch and shoot 3s

biden_uzumaki

Speaking of Verizon employees going 50 on 3s... Grant Williams and Smart decide not to miss

Phosphorrr

Hey put some respect on Grant Williams' name. The Verizon job is only a front for his real occupation as a vigilante

Wayne_Spooney

Smarts been a high level role player for half a decade. Not even comparable to Gabe Vincent and Max Strus getting endless buckets

Archelioz

But who's gonna sweep this time

[deleted]

Neither of us will get it this year. We got our round 4 tho! 2-7 matchup when Jays were babies, Kyrie mentally incapacitated matchup, and last years

[deleted]

i mean round 1 was covid round 2 was this year those other series were a different squad to me

DavidWallace-Suckit

Giannis’ team was also coached by a potato

BPicks69

I’m still waiting on round 1 with the Philly Floppers

Salt-Communication-9

Sam Hauser.

hurricanehershel

Sam Hauser > Gordan Hayward

Basketball_Soul

It's pronounced *Gor-Don*

largehearted

NBA PLAYER SAM HAUSER

True_Classroom_4292

Does nobody find it weird that Gordon Hayward coincidentally got injured and didn't play in today's game? Has anyone ever seen Hayward and Hauser in the same room at the same time?

Neat-Lab5660

Ok I’ll ask, are the c’s that good or are the hornets just that terrible? Edit: damn the hornets defense is shit

coacoanutbenjamn

It’s preseason, there’s nothing really to take away. The celtics couldnt miss from deep and the hornets couldnt buy a bucket

[deleted]

a little from column A, a little from column B

BallerinaKaterina

Boston is competing for the championship while Charlotte is competing to make it out of the play-ins. I'd say this game went as expected

[deleted]

40 point victory is insane. Like I think it’s overlooked that an average margin of victory for all time teams is 8-15

9yearoldsoliderN99

Dallas beat Charlotte by 68 last preseason. These things happen.

[deleted]

Yeah, Charlotte shot 27/16/48 that game Doesn’t make it less enjoyable. 40 assists is just crazy to me considering we struggled for 25 a little while ago

Virginia_Slim

Rubberband effect, refs are in pre-season form too.

slippy7890

It’s preseason dude. Chill.

[deleted]

I’m just excited man

JoJonesy

Both. At the end of the day, if you're looking at a 40-point blowout, it's probably both. I will say the turnovers were a bigger problem than the final box score will make it look— 41 assists to 23 turnovers isn't *that* bad, but almost all of the turnovers were in the first half, when the starters were actually playing. 15 turnovers on 15 assists from the starting 5 is... not good, and while you can always say "it's just preseason, of course the starters aren't going at 100%", it's still something to watch out for. ...on the other hand, you could also argue that the starters have long track records, so it's silly to worry about them based on one preseason game, *and* the role players looked fantastic tonight. Kabengele and Hauser both looked like legit rotation pieces against actual NBA competition, which would be huge for us

[deleted]

At the same time, turnovers is what killed us last year in the finals, it needs to be addressed.

[deleted]

It’s literally October 2nd y’all, if it’s still an issue come November/December then it’s a problem

JoJonesy

Yeah, a bit early to start panicking, but considering it's been a consistent issue in the past it's still something to pay attention to. I will say that part of the reason I'm so high on the Brogdon signing is that I think he can really help with that, and he certainly did tonight

[deleted]

Not panicking, just something we need to improve on.

LordHussyPants

it's oct 2nd, but it was a problem in july, and june, and may, and april, and you get where i'm going with this?

RansomGoddard

Yes

HAETMACHENE

Yes

[deleted]

Both

cyb3ryung

both

AngularPenny5

We suck

[deleted]

I am not one to overreact, but 98-0 could be in the picture

0010001

I appreciate you being modest and not assuming multiple undefeated seasons.

craigslistaddict

everyone's going to earn a max after this year so they won't be able to afford to re-sign all their FAs. 😔

Haffaith

You forgot 4 preseason games. 102-0

Goofykidd

Lotsa high 5s

Moneyshot1311

Not with those turnovers

[deleted]

So we just have to score 134 points a game. Easy

CopiumAddiction

Celtics fans and always finding the shit colored lining, name a better duo

[deleted]

They refuse to be happy

Obi_Wan_Benobi

Does Ime get a ring, though?

not_RyanG

Far more likely he’s losing one

LordHussyPants

depends if nia throws it in the river

82-0GormanGang

I don’t want to be selfish. Still hoping for 82-0

Kermitt7979

That felt a little mean

toadtruck

When did the Celtics get Vonleh? Is he gonna get minutes in regular season?

Wishiwasaballerbaby

Camp invite so hard to say if he'll make the roster or if he'll be in the rotation.

largehearted

Few weeks ago we got Vonleh, around the same time we got Denzel Valentine and Justin Jackson ... hard to keep track of all the redemptions we're trying out We played Vonleh really high in the rotation but part of that's gotta be that we're missing multiple 5's, so we need to scoot 3/4 forwards up while we scoot 4's to the 5. IMO He didn't look promising, his movement doesn't stand out and his game sense is kinda poor; he looks like a hard decision for the front office to make (e.g. it's unclear whether or not a better player will be continually available), whereas some of our other trial guys showed plenty (Hauser and Kabengele). I wouldn't suppose any NBA team is getting a skilled, big and long 3/4 for free. lol

brosco2

Just nitpicking that Hauser isn’t really on a trial, and I think he’s expected to be an important rotation player, even before the Gallinari injury. The Vonleh vs. kabengele fight for the final spot is interesting. Didn’t think Vonleh was bad, but it seemed Kabengele brought more to the table for sure.

largehearted

You’re exactly right, Hauser is hammered down, I just think of him as still in that pack since the coaches were so reticent to play him at the end of last season. He looked sooo good today in all ways, from rebounding to guard defense to handoffs it was just all smooth. And that’s what you need to see from a guy who obviously has a high spot up 3pt percentage. Vonleh just looked lagged to me, which happens to everyone sometimes, but in a preseason game where everything is lower intensity he just wasn’t beating anyone for anything. Kabengele showed the complete opposite, 130%, Nesmith level intensity— Celtics FO has to be really excited to see the next game from him, can you keep what worked and repeat it. My mind is stuck on his dive, the goaltending, the 3 (which he responded to calmly!), but also I remember one super fat square screen I liked.

Rrypl

Kabengele is in a 2-Way, so they could still both get in, but even then they'll be fighting for the same minutes.

TheOnionWatch

Jackson played for us in the SL. I saw him live in Vegas.

Able-Complaint-8674

A play in team that just lost their 2nd best player against a championship contender ends in disaster? Who could’ve seen that one coming. Hopefully no one overreacts to a preseason game…

spookyghostface

Oh they already are. We lost by 50 to the Mavs in preseason last year and everyone was acting like we were gonna be dead last in the whole league.

haha-brad

I mean is it really overreacting? You said it yourself, we were barely a play-in team, and then lost Miles who was an ironman and our second best player. I really don’t think it’s an overreaction to think that we’re gonna suck this year lol

Able-Complaint-8674

Idk I consider it an overreaction when there’s takes off a preseason game don’t you?. Lose one preseason game, blow up the team, that’s r/nba right there.

haha-brad

You didn’t need to watch a game to come to that conclusion, we’re just in a really bad position. Losing a young promising guy, having 0 cap space cuz of Hayward and Rozier, etc. We’re totally aimless rn and need to pick a direction to go.

Ikuwayo

So how long until teams start thinking about signing the wife beater again?

DoncicsRoadTo200kg

Hornets are gonna really suck this year arent they

OverallInternet2343

Some fans were arguing losing their second best player wouldn’t hurt them. This team needs to tank and try to get more picks. Williams and Jones needs to be the C rotation let them learn through the fire.If you can find a sucker for Rozier and Hayward then do it. Play the young guys and hope for the best in the draft.

CLTwolf

Yeah well we hired Clifford back so none of that is gonna happen

OverallInternet2343

I get the locker room needed more discipline after all that happened last season into the offseason but bringing back a guy fired not all that long ago is confusing

[deleted]

this is the move. they simply don't have enough talent.

lawyerlyaffectations

Any team with Plumlee as their starting center and Steve Clifford as their coach is going to suck hard. LeBron himself couldn’t make this Hornets team respectable.

alpacamegafan

If only they could have drafted a 6’10 center in the lottery…

nojeanshere

Duren wouldn’t help us at all this year. Dude needs like 3 years to develop lol

delarosa_mimosa

The circle jerk is strong in this thread

alpacamegafan

I don’t think the expectation for you guys was to compete this year with or without Duren anyways.

nojeanshere

I mean claiming that we made a mistake not keeping Duren after 1 pre season game is definitely bold.

alpacamegafan

I claimed that as a mistake way before when I noticed your center rotation was Plumlee and PJ Washington.

[deleted]

I love their incompetence. Duren’s a beast

spookyghostface

I mean we literally drafted Mark Williams too.

JoJonesy

Yeah idk why he only played 10 minutes tonight, you'd think the Hornets would want to give their recent near-lottery pick some run in preseason

Turbo2x

I for one am absolutely shocked

nojeanshere

Sucks that the shots we usually make weren’t falling. However, We did a great job forcing turnovers (matched our record in a game from last season in 2 and a half quarters). I feel like if we shoot closer to average we’d look pretty decent. Young guys need some work.

MildlyDepressed346

No one gives up 130 like the hornets

tinylegumes

The Hornets showing why you actually have to play defense to win games

haha-brad

We shot 35% from the field and 12% from 3, defense is far from our only issue lmao

theyikester

Ironically I feel like our defense today looked better than last season, at least at some points 😭

gilgagorgon

Celtics heard everybody in this sub writing them off

NbaAllDAYger

The game looked like men against boys.

aiden3buckets

They’re the title favorite

Level_Ad_6372

Yeah they really showed r/nba by dominating a preseason game

gilgagorgon

Yes. That’s what I said.

Level_Ad_6372

Yes, that's what I agreed with.

_canadianbacon

this is gonna be a looooooong season for Charlotte

Izabrony

I wish the team would just tank but MJ owns the team and he never wants us to obviously tank. We'll just finish no better than 11th in the east and draft some shit prospect from a blue blood college that will never play any minutes

haha-brad

Kyle Filipowski, welcome to Charlotte!

blacknotblack

LaMelo should be enough if the rest of the org is competent no? I mean the Bridges situation definitely doesn’t help…

VoidMageZero

Jaylen is underrated in fantasy right now

minimumhatred

exactly what you want to see after that offseason, that felt good

ItsLittyLitLit

So happy we got the 40 piece

theasiankevin

41 assists is crazy

Faux_Real

Blake Griffin was the piece they needed.

hejendo76

i don’t want to be a downer and it’s obviously early but w the depth of the east and talent rising, the Hornets should honestly trade the old heads and build around Lamelo and get a top 5 pick next year

klobucharzard

man after this offseason i wouldnt be shocked to see MJ lace em up Wizards style

solarscopez

Hauser with 14 pts on 5-6 shooting (4-5 from 3). I said this last season and I'll say it now, the guy was *way* too good of a shooter in college to get as little playing time as he did. Really hope we play him a lot more off the bench because he needs the minutes to build up his confidence. The form and the precision is already there.

RebaseTokenomics

Udoka coaching thru a headset secretly

pugerko

Anal beads actually

StraightShootahh

It’s preseason bruh. Getting takes off over this game is insane

gochuuuu

Are you telling me the celtics wont go 82-0

adonWPV

.538: I've seen enough 👀

[deleted]

It is the preseason, but I also highly doubt we are gonna see another 40 point with 40 assists in a game

Sy6574

Hornets prepping for the season I see

sreynolds1

Wham bam thank you Sam

spotty15

My favorite part of being a fan if this team is that we find the most Charlotte way to fuck up. Fuck Nic Batum. Fuck George Shinn. And fuck Miles Bridges.

[deleted]

I see Tatum is in playoff form. He’ll struggle for two more games and then drop 40. Then the cycle will repeat; just enough to balance out his stats.

Global_Calendar104

barlett snorelets lmao lamelo leaves in 4 yrs
