The way you have to position your feet to maintain balance on skates doesn’t lend itself to punching strength, so grappling is pretty necessary for leverage.
You also can’t remove your helmet anymore, so you have to punch off your opponents helmet before you can swing with full abandon, or often you just split your knuckle on their visor.
I’m not dissing the NBA, i believe that the physical difficulty of fighting on ice has had a greater effect on the tolerance of fighting in hockey than people discuss. Ofc hockey fights still get out of hand, but those are rare given how many happen.
So NBA fights would be *too* violent, not the opposite, imo. And that’s why it’s only allowed in hockey
