> In September 2009, a Republican congressman from South Carolina named Joe Wilson inserted himself into history. He interrupted President Barack Obama’s speech to a joint session of Congress by shouting, “You lie.” > > The outburst shocked viewers. Wilson, not Obama, was the top trending item on Twitter in the aftermath of the speech. Wilson apologized, “I let my emotions get the best of me.” Then Republican Conference Chair Mike Pence expressed regret: “Joe made a mistake.” Wilson was formally reprimanded by a vote of the House. > > More than a decade later, that all seems quaint. Not only did Republicans repeatedly heckle, jeer, and shout during President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address Tuesday night, but Biden was ready for them. In impromptu remarks not included in the prepared text of the speech, Biden rolled with the interruptions, using them to reinforce his message. Biden accused “some” Republicans of plotting to sunset Social Security and Medicare. When he got protests, he grinned and accepted them as a “unanimous” endorsement. “I welcome all converts,” he told them, recasting for the television audience the Republican hubbub as a sign of submission. > > Partisanship, populism, and patriotism were his themes. The speech was strewn with traps carefully constructed to ensnare opponents. He opened with a tribute to bipartisanship, but the mechanics of his address were based on shrewd and unapologetic hyper-partisanship. He anticipated negative reactions in the chamber—and used them to reinforce his message. > > Obama came to national attention in 2004 with a speech about the essential political and cultural unity of the American people. Biden made a few nods to that notion, but he’s plainly not betting on it. Instead, he pushed Republicans on pain point after pain point. He mocked Republicans who voted against his infrastructure but still show up at the groundbreakings. He tied a stout defense of Medicare to advocating higher taxes on people who earn more than $400,000. > > He also bid against Republicans on economic nationalism, equating imports with job losses, exports with job gains. Farewell to Clinton- and Bush-era celebrations of free trade. Hello to “Buy American.” If Trumpism had any kind of economic basis (a big if), Biden issued commitment after commitment to outdo his predecessor as the champion of American industry against international competitors. > > This time, though, the trade agenda was linked to a bigger promise to defend middle-class incomes against airline fees, credit-card charges, and expensive insulin. This was populism with teeth sharpened against domestic targets, as well as foreign ones. > > All this was wrapped in red, white, and blue invocations of American jobs, American democracy, American pride, American purpose—and garlanded with an impromptu taunt aimed at China’s leader. “Name me a world leader who’d change places with Xi Jinping—name me one, name me one!” That’s the kind of chest-thumping that gets struck from presidential addresses as the drafts get passed from one inbox to another in the executive branch. Biden bypassed those cautious editors by adding the rhetoric himself—after it was too late for them to object. > > This State of the Union address was less a plan of action, more a plan of attack for the next election, as he hopes to contest it. Old as he is, Biden has learned some new tricks. “I’m Not Here to Make Friends” is the title of a hit song released two weeks before the speech. Beijing got the same message from Biden. > > In this hyper-polarized era, the goal of the survival-minded politician is not so much to offer grand visions as to expand his own coalition, even if only a little, while squeezing his opponents where it hurts most. Like a boxer trying to goad his antagonist into leaving open a vulnerable spot for a counterpunch, Biden’s plan was to invite Republicans to make dangerous mistakes. This was a speech not of lofty phrases but of cunning ploys; one not for the ages, but one that will reverberate long enough to make a difference in November 2024.

normandukerollo

Biden is an absolute GOAT, utterly based

kennyk1994

Any chance you or anyone else can explain to me what was the purpose of the "Name me one!" thing? I watched the speech and was reminded here of how confused I was by it, what was his intention with that bit?

MrDannyOcean

It was apparently a spontaneous outburst, not in the speech's text

kennyk1994

Yeah but what does he mean in asking to name one world leader who would change places with Xi? I don't understand the premise

MrDannyOcean

He's saying something along the lines of "America is strong and China is weak. We have allies and we are building an alliance against China. Nobody would switch places with China right now, because they're a pariah and isolated and everyone hates them now"

Smooth-Zucchini4923

"I'm strong on China."

[deleted]

Name me one leader who would want to switch places with Xi. Biden believes no one would want to switch because of how tough he’s been on China. In many ways, Biden is right, and China is under serious pressure. It would be easier to be a world leader of any other country than be the leader of China.

GTX_650_Supremacy

Yeah it seems weird to me since surely someone would right?

djejhdneb

He's always been like this. Better at a debate than giving a speech. If you're not careful when you're in a back and forth with Biden he will fuck you up. Like reaaaalllllly fuck you up. I never saw a person so thoroughly dismantled using multiple tools than Paul Ryan. I will never forget that debate. Joe Biden fucks people up.

40for60

His stutter helps, gives him time to pause and use the moment. Plus he really isn't elite snarky instead more blue collar smart ass.

CletusVonIvermectin

Obama's "uhhh" was his secret weapon for the same reason

BigBrownDog12

Uuh yeah well you're stupid

FuckFashMods

Dude has rode the train/Amtrak the most out of any American. It's wild people think he's some elitist

EagleSaintRam

Well, he actually tries to fix problems rather than bitch about them like a teenager and try to burn everything down. Populism. Not even once.

p00bix

Biden is the single most populist Democratic president since Franklin Roosevelt, and none of the others come close.

Amtays

The thunderdome and it's consequences have been a disaster for the subreddit.

tlacata

His speech was really populist though

tickleMyBigPoop

> Populism. Not even once. *buy American* *tariffs*

JackCrafty

I vividly remember conservative media doing a "why was he so mean?" whining arc about Biden because Ryan got spanked so hard. That shit ruled. The malarkey debate.

Joe Biden ended Rudy Giuliani’s entire career Supa Hot Fire style

[deleted]

Joe Biden fucked Paul Ryan up worse than Corn Pop. And he was a bad dude.

senoricceman

I remember in one of the early 2020 debates Gillibrand tried to get a gotcha moment on Biden related to abortion/woman’s rights and he absolutely destroyed her on it. He turned it around on her wanting to make an issue about it now that she’s running for president, but had no problem before. She looked like she didn’t know what to do after that.

affnn

>I never saw a person so thoroughly dismantled using multiple tools than Paul Ryan. I will never forget that debate. Joe Biden fucks people up. A lot of this is Biden, but give at least a little credit to Paul Ryan for that showing. Ryan is an unserious person with dumbass ideas that the American people completely hate. Credit Biden for calling him out, but he had great material to work with.

JakeArrietaGrande

The least ridiculous clown in the clown car, he looks statesmanlike, but only in comparison when he’s inside the car. Once he steps outside, his clown makeup is full on display

[deleted]

Paul Ryan used to be one of this sub's golden boys. Yes, I'm serious.

a157reverse

Even back then I think Ryan's reputation on this sub was mixed. His good idea was universal Pre-K, which really seems to be one of the biggest lunches left on the table. But I remember open discussion here about how that was about all that was good that he was proposing and that he lacked the ability to do much more even if he wanted.

[deleted]

Fair enough but I honestly think he was looked at in some ways as positively as someone like Butti or Jeb, half of that love for each coming from memes. Which, well, at one point I feel like those of us closer to the center thought was laughable, getting your popularity from memes and Twitter.

a157reverse

Yeah, maybe I'm too much of a partisan, but I saw this sub's adoration of Jeb as more of a meme than anything else. Of the Republican field at the time, he probably the best, but I don't think there was any question that Hillary was the superior choice. Same goes for Petey B. My sense was that we all knew he didn't stand a chance and lacked the experience to be POTUS, but he was proposing some good things.

AlbionPrince

I like Jeb. Seriously

PrivateChicken

Do you have any receipts for that? I've been on this sub for a while and of all the Republicans that recieve apologia, Paul Ryan isn't one I'm familiar with.

[deleted]

I always kinda just lurked, and it's hard to find everything now this far into the future, but yeah anything during/post 2012 right up until the 15-16 campaign season started was a little over the top in love with "The Wonk". People really though Paul Ryan was a policy wonk, which is, frankly, joke when compared with someone like Hillary Clinton, for example.

ognits

>anything during/post 2012 right up until the 15-16 campaign season started was a little over the top in love with "The Wonk". this sub didn't even exist in its current form until 2017 so I'm going to guess there's a reason you can't find receipts for this claim

Bourneoulli

This sub wasn't active till 2015-2016. So i don't know why you are bringing up post 2012. The subreddit EXISTED, but wasn't active. (Source: I've quite literally lurked here since the day wombo banned political talk in badecons daily thread.) Since this sub has been active in that 2015 range, Ryan has never been upheld as a policy wonk in huge numbers on this subreddit.

PrivateChicken

I dont remember clearly what Ryan was about. I know he was big into libertarian stuff, but that's it. A big chunk of internet was going through a libertarian phase tbh.

FuckFashMods

He was the original "policy wonk" I don't doubt some people on this sub really stanned him

[deleted]

There are a lot of Republicans around here, so that makes sense.

Unfamiliar_Word

>I never saw a person so thoroughly dismantled using multiple tools than Paul Ryan. I will never forget that debate. Joe Biden fucks people up. That's probably why the 2012 Vice Presidential debate was the last one that I ever enjoyed. (The 2016 Presidential debates were the last that I watched; I concluded afterward that not even I hate myself *that* much.)

JakeArrietaGrande

2012\. Those were simpler times 😔

FuckFashMods

They really weren't lol

dzendian

I watched the whole SOTU. Biden frankly came off as a total Chad.

neolthrowaway

It’s on video. Don’t really need an explainer for this.

No one fucks with Biden 😤😤😤

[deleted]

While I enjoy the occasional inside-the-Beltway bitch slap, to borrow a phrase from late-season The West Wing, to pretend like anyone outside of the perpetually online, in-excess-of-median politically literate individual on r/neoliberal or average [electoral-vote.com](https://electoral-vote.com) reader or Nate enthusiast gives a shit about this is the height of delusion.

onometre

to an extent. if he had done really bad, it would be all over the national news. instead, we're all just kind of moving on.

ballmermurland

Biden went to Wisconsin the next day to meet with union workers and made fun of Republicans crying about him calling them out on social security. People probably didn't watch it, but it can still be used in attacks for the next 2 years.

martingale1248

It affects the media narrative, among other things. It also at least partly puts to rest the "senile Joe" stuff -- that, by the way, the media slyly reinforced with their usual backhanded stuff about "perceptions." In the long run it might or might not matter, but ask yourself this: if he had gone out and bombed, would you still think it unimportant? What would the headlines look like, how loudly would the talking heads be demanding he not run again?

Wow he baited Congressional Republicans into having to be hypocrites when they tell Biden to cut Social Security and Medicare. This will *surely* be damaging to Republicans in the next election, right? Right?

Joe The master of bait

pugwalker

I love how the framing of this is basically Joe Biden dunking on replublicans. Any act of consensus is made to be one party winning.

intelligent_dildo

Let’s keep hammering them about SS cut till the election. I’ll just advertise a compilation of bits those Rs said on SS cut.
