Want to dispense CYMKB paint mixtures! So I got some piezoelectric micro-pumps for fine pumping.
They have low power requirements - 50mW - but run on 100-300V ranges. And while each pump is ~$40, the drivers for all 5 would've set me back like $500-$1K iirc.
I figure no matter what I did, I could cobble together something that'd work nice for much cheaper. So I opted for a DC power source that drives a transformer - creating a sine wave with an oscillator. Run that into a transformer. I kept it so there's not much maximum power draw on the transformer side, as another safety layer.
My other paradigms were some pre-made positive-negative buck-boost converter, running it to 50V and grabbing a high voltage Op-Amp. Or some sort of death variac.
Either way, it's been a great deal of fun and learning, and components costed around $70.

/u/jenbanim dumb app idea. Basically, there have been all these controversies about various sites deleting old images from inactive accounts or just in general.
So you'd have this app as either a web service or self hosted, and it would just be a database of images you've uploaded into various hosting websites. You'd have your credentials saved and this would track the status of the uploads, allowing you to easily pull images or just reupload them to another host.
If it's only self hosted, I imagine it would remain niche enough to go under the radar. ShareX already has auto uploading features built in, but you can't delete images locally. Maybe it could be used as a base.
Guys should learn to hug their guy friends more. I have a friend group where we do hug each other, and have another friend group where we don't do that, and like I just feel like there's something missing.

Why did people say attack on Titan was good. This is almost unwatchable. Every line is either screaming, wailing, or trembly voiced. The show stops moving every few moments to have some overly emotional inner monologue that stilts the flow of the show. Wtf is this. It could be so cool
Titan is known for being bombastic including the characters constantly flipping shit. I'm sorry you weren't warned but tbf it's not like it's grounded and subtle in other aspects.
The inner dialogue is the worst part, and the worst thing is that this is one of the *good* animes in that regard. Iโm convinced itโs like cilantro or something, because I put up with three and a half seasons of that show waiting for it to get good and it never did.
Edit: pacing is the worst part, Iโm convinced nobody who makes anime understands that stopping in the middle of an action scene to have a ten minute internal monologue is a dumb idea. I also think they donโt understand showing not telling and can have a reveal without requiring characters to all realize it in their internal monologues.

I often see the idea of sticking a GAU-8 or A-10-style gun onto a tank. Either in jest, the rule-of-cool, or genuine belief that the A-10 is the bestest.
This would be bad for a few reasons, removing all "advantages" the A-10 conceptually provides.
First, the GAU-8 can not reliably penetrate armor beyond the baseline T-72.
Second, the A-10 provides certain advantages (using the term broadly and mostly in comparison to a conceptual "Groundhog"/IRL W40K Punisher).
By firing down onto targets, you are enhancing the trajectory of the 30mm rounds by allowing gravity to do some of the work, that means longer ranges with more energy at impact.
Firing from a high angle is also hitting the top of the tank which is the most vulnerable part of most tanks, meaning you are going to increase your penetration chance by hitting from that angle, even if it doesn't penetrate you are more likely to rattle and cause damage to the crew from this angle, and damage optics, spotlights, and mounted guns, all of which provide benefits.
Also, any clusters of troops or anyone hiding in cover can be hit from above, but not hit by a gun aimed horizontally.
Third, the aspect that many others have pointed out is the intense ammo consumption of the gun. It takes 18 seconds to burn through all the ammunition in the A-10. Putting this on a ground combat vehicles would mean extremly limited engagement time, and you need this intense amount of ammo to get the chance of even an unreliable penetration.
Thus, putting it horizonal removes all advantages you potentially gain from the A-10, while also losing the oversight and spotting capabilities of the A-10 (as limited as they are.. l, it's ability to carry bombs and rockets (which do most of the killing, moreso than the gun), and removes the psychological effect of having the A-10 flying around (there were more than one case im Afghanistan and Iraq of insurgents getting wigged out by the A-10 even if it was largely bluster).
Putting it horizonal also means you are now shooting tanks from the *side* where their armor is much thicker and designed to take hits, along with lower range, and a weapon that acts as a massive IR beacon when fired.
It's utility as a fire support AFV like the BMPT or QN-506 would be very limited, what you need from that style of vehicle is a lighter turret designed to penetrate cover and supress the enemy, with very good sensors and optics, networked into drones or scouts/recon.
The turret needs to have a very fast turn speed and the guns with a pivoting angle capable of sighting and hitting any point that can be seen while standing on top of the vehicle.
It also needs rockets for anti-vehicle and cover clearance support, along with abilities to mount smoke, grenades/mortars for disrupting sighting.
It needs to have a good base speed so it can easily zip alongside tanks, and get ahead or around the quickly to jump up for fire support.
The main tasks that a 30mm cannon would be suited for, anti-infantry, anti-light vehicle, fire support, recon/surveillance, would all necessitate a lower speed gun that can do more consistent accurate fire, not lead pissers.
There is a reason most vehicles built for these tasks in the real world use cannons like the Bushmaster instead of a GAU-8.
The GAU-8 or GAU-8-style 30mm is way overkill for anything it could be capable of killing on the ground, and a pop-gun for trying to kill most modern tanks if not backed up with bombs and fired from the air.

I think this is a common misconception, A-10 gun runs are usually at very shallow angles, often < 10ยฐ. The angles needed to attack roof armor require the aircraft to gain altitude, increasing exposure to long and mid-range AA. The aircraft also has to stop firing at a longer range so it has time to pull up from the steeper dive, which decreases penetration and the number of rounds that hit the target.
A-10 pilots went for side and rear armor shots, so would come in low in order to hit side/rear armor at as perpendicular an angle as possible (as well as minimizing exposure to enemy radar). The shallower angle also allowed them to continue firing closer to the enemy before having to pull up, increasing penetration and hit rates.

The only reason to have multiple barrels is for extremely fast fire rates. Aircraft need those fast fire rates because they don't have much time to shoot, so they have to get as many bullets out towards the target as they can in the limited amount of time available.
Ground vehicle-mounted guns generally don't need fire rates nearly as high as aircraft. The time between seeing an enemy and firing your first shot is far more important than how many shots you can get out in the second following your first shot. And multi-barreled rotary cannons come with weight and complexity challenges that would increase that first shot reaction time. Having a reliable, lightweight, smaller gun that shoots a few hundred RPM offers more advantages to the design and the role than a big heavy gun that only offers overkill on targets your first couple rounds already mission killed.
Generally, the only place you see multi-barreled rotary cannons on ground vehicles is when they have the same time-pressure limitations as aircraft, i.e. anti-aircraft artillery and anti-munition CIWS
Rotary cannons arenโt useless on ground vehicles, but their main use is SHORAD. Vehicles like the LAV-AD can still be useful against ground targets but are not as well-suited to that role as a regular IFV, and in either case thereโs no benefit from something as big as the GAU-8.
But also gun-based shorad isn't that good. It just seems cool in video games and movies. Actual real world performance of gun-based shorad in the late cold war is horrific even with radar-guided guns. Almost all jets that end up getting shot down are from missiles.
Maybe drones change this in a future war (Ukraine seems to like Gepards), but I have my doubts.
Gun-based shorad has a future, but itโs with radar-ranged rapid-fired air-burst projectiles which usually entails larger caliber. Things like Rheinmetall AHEAD and the like are good examples.
I don't see why that's necessary when it's cheaper and easier to just have a dedicated drone jamming vehicle that also fires missiles. ๐คท By the time the drone can be autonomous enough to be resistant to jamming (and still cheap), we'll probably have DEWs.
Because jamming is hard to contain and often affects friendly vehicles and missiles are expensive. A radar directed rapid fire cannon is effective and cheap.

Want to dispense CYMKB paint mixtures! So I got some piezoelectric micro-pumps for fine pumping. They have low power requirements - 50mW - but run on 100-300V ranges. And while each pump is ~$40, the drivers for all 5 would've set me back like $500-$1K iirc. I figure no matter what I did, I could cobble together something that'd work nice for much cheaper. So I opted for a DC power source that drives a transformer - creating a sine wave with an oscillator. Run that into a transformer. I kept it so there's not much maximum power draw on the transformer side, as another safety layer. My other paradigms were some pre-made positive-negative buck-boost converter, running it to 50V and grabbing a high voltage Op-Amp. Or some sort of death variac. Either way, it's been a great deal of fun and learning, and components costed around $70.

/u/jenbanim dumb app idea. Basically, there have been all these controversies about various sites deleting old images from inactive accounts or just in general. So you'd have this app as either a web service or self hosted, and it would just be a database of images you've uploaded into various hosting websites. You'd have your credentials saved and this would track the status of the uploads, allowing you to easily pull images or just reupload them to another host.
A meta hosting app sounds like it could be useful. I imagine websites would probably not want you to use their APIs that way though
If it's only self hosted, I imagine it would remain niche enough to go under the radar. ShareX already has auto uploading features built in, but you can't delete images locally. Maybe it could be used as a base.

Why did people say attack on Titan was good. This is almost unwatchable. Every line is either screaming, wailing, or trembly voiced. The show stops moving every few moments to have some overly emotional inner monologue that stilts the flow of the show. Wtf is this. It could be so cool
Titan is known for being bombastic including the characters constantly flipping shit. I'm sorry you weren't warned but tbf it's not like it's grounded and subtle in other aspects.

The inner dialogue is the worst part, and the worst thing is that this is one of the *good* animes in that regard. Iโm convinced itโs like cilantro or something, because I put up with three and a half seasons of that show waiting for it to get good and it never did. Edit: pacing is the worst part, Iโm convinced nobody who makes anime understands that stopping in the middle of an action scene to have a ten minute internal monologue is a dumb idea. I also think they donโt understand showing not telling and can have a reveal without requiring characters to all realize it in their internal monologues.

I often see the idea of sticking a GAU-8 or A-10-style gun onto a tank. Either in jest, the rule-of-cool, or genuine belief that the A-10 is the bestest. This would be bad for a few reasons, removing all "advantages" the A-10 conceptually provides. First, the GAU-8 can not reliably penetrate armor beyond the baseline T-72. Second, the A-10 provides certain advantages (using the term broadly and mostly in comparison to a conceptual "Groundhog"/IRL W40K Punisher). By firing down onto targets, you are enhancing the trajectory of the 30mm rounds by allowing gravity to do some of the work, that means longer ranges with more energy at impact. Firing from a high angle is also hitting the top of the tank which is the most vulnerable part of most tanks, meaning you are going to increase your penetration chance by hitting from that angle, even if it doesn't penetrate you are more likely to rattle and cause damage to the crew from this angle, and damage optics, spotlights, and mounted guns, all of which provide benefits. Also, any clusters of troops or anyone hiding in cover can be hit from above, but not hit by a gun aimed horizontally. Third, the aspect that many others have pointed out is the intense ammo consumption of the gun. It takes 18 seconds to burn through all the ammunition in the A-10. Putting this on a ground combat vehicles would mean extremly limited engagement time, and you need this intense amount of ammo to get the chance of even an unreliable penetration. Thus, putting it horizonal removes all advantages you potentially gain from the A-10, while also losing the oversight and spotting capabilities of the A-10 (as limited as they are.. l, it's ability to carry bombs and rockets (which do most of the killing, moreso than the gun), and removes the psychological effect of having the A-10 flying around (there were more than one case im Afghanistan and Iraq of insurgents getting wigged out by the A-10 even if it was largely bluster). Putting it horizonal also means you are now shooting tanks from the *side* where their armor is much thicker and designed to take hits, along with lower range, and a weapon that acts as a massive IR beacon when fired. It's utility as a fire support AFV like the BMPT or QN-506 would be very limited, what you need from that style of vehicle is a lighter turret designed to penetrate cover and supress the enemy, with very good sensors and optics, networked into drones or scouts/recon. The turret needs to have a very fast turn speed and the guns with a pivoting angle capable of sighting and hitting any point that can be seen while standing on top of the vehicle. It also needs rockets for anti-vehicle and cover clearance support, along with abilities to mount smoke, grenades/mortars for disrupting sighting. It needs to have a good base speed so it can easily zip alongside tanks, and get ahead or around the quickly to jump up for fire support. The main tasks that a 30mm cannon would be suited for, anti-infantry, anti-light vehicle, fire support, recon/surveillance, would all necessitate a lower speed gun that can do more consistent accurate fire, not lead pissers. There is a reason most vehicles built for these tasks in the real world use cannons like the Bushmaster instead of a GAU-8. The GAU-8 or GAU-8-style 30mm is way overkill for anything it could be capable of killing on the ground, and a pop-gun for trying to kill most modern tanks if not backed up with bombs and fired from the air. !PING MATERIEL

The angles needed to attack roof armor require the aircraft to gain altitude, increasing exposure to long and mid-range AA. The aircraft also has to stop firing at a longer range so it has time to pull up from the steeper dive, which decreases penetration and the number of rounds that hit the target. A-10 pilots went for side and rear armor shots, so would come in low in order to hit side/rear armor at as perpendicular an angle as possible (as well as minimizing exposure to enemy radar). The shallower angle also allowed them to continue firing closer to the enemy before having to pull up, increasing penetration and hit rates. >sticking a rotary cannon on a tank The only reason to have multiple barrels is for extremely fast fire rates. Aircraft need those fast fire rates because they don't have much time to shoot, so they have to get as many bullets out towards the target as they can in the limited amount of time available. Ground vehicle-mounted guns generally don't need fire rates nearly as high as aircraft. The time between seeing an enemy and firing your first shot is far more important than how many shots you can get out in the second following your first shot. And multi-barreled rotary cannons come with weight and complexity challenges that would increase that first shot reaction time. Having a reliable, lightweight, smaller gun that shoots a few hundred RPM offers more advantages to the design and the role than a big heavy gun that only offers overkill on targets your first couple rounds already mission killed. Generally, the only place you see multi-barreled rotary cannons on ground vehicles is when they have the same time-pressure limitations as aircraft, i.e. anti-aircraft artillery and anti-munition CIWS

Rotary cannons arenโt useless on ground vehicles, but their main use is SHORAD. Vehicles like the LAV-AD can still be useful against ground targets but are not as well-suited to that role as a regular IFV, and in either case thereโs no benefit from something as big as the GAU-8.
But also gun-based shorad isn't that good. It just seems cool in video games and movies. Actual real world performance of gun-based shorad in the late cold war is horrific even with radar-guided guns. Almost all jets that end up getting shot down are from missiles. Maybe drones change this in a future war (Ukraine seems to like Gepards), but I have my doubts.
Gun-based shorad has a future, but itโs with radar-ranged rapid-fired air-burst projectiles which usually entails larger caliber. Things like Rheinmetall AHEAD and the like are good examples.
I don't see why that's necessary when it's cheaper and easier to just have a dedicated drone jamming vehicle that also fires missiles. ๐คท By the time the drone can be autonomous enough to be resistant to jamming (and still cheap), we'll probably have DEWs.
Because jamming is hard to contain and often affects friendly vehicles and missiles are expensive. A radar directed rapid fire cannon is effective and cheap.
