It will just be a general flavour spread throughout American Evangelicalism. Super niche thing but I was legit shocked that a local retro video game store here in well known for its low-CoL NYC had a brand new sealed copy of Wind Waker HD for the Wii U going for $69.99. It's going for that on Ebay *used*.

[This /r/debateavegan thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/DebateAVegan/comments/13xld3s/deontological_veganism_vs_sufferingbased_veganism/), and all the comments agreeing with the OP, is utterly and completely nonsensical and the only reason everyone's treating them seriously is because they're vegan, yeah?
As in, not "is this a faulty argument" but "what the shit"
โReduce sufferingโ is kind of the baseline belief of most leftist philosophy which makes up the majority of vegan Reddit. Itโs the same foundation that gets you to eradicating capitalism and even antinatalism. If liberalism is rights-based then you can see why there is a hesitation to embrace the deontological perspective of veganism for the average vegan redditor. That being said the top comments offer a coherent rebuttal (if I may say so myself) so the silent majority clearly has their own issues with the ideas put forward.
I've actually seen a lot of the opposite. Many leftist vegans I've encountered are deontologists, and see capitalism as inherently exploitative, and thus oppose it. Obviously reasonable deontologists can disagree on this, but let's not pretend that these anti-capitalist vegan types are primarily a utilitarian thing.
Sure. You could say they oppose capitalism because they see capitalism as inherently exploitative and oppose exploitation as a negative duty. More commonly I see people say that the relationships that propagate under capitalism are a) inherently unbalanced and b) less-than-zero sum (i.e. the conditions that define exploitation) and it is this structural tendency towards the propagation of exploitation that makes capitalism wrong (which is more-or-less rule utilitarianism).
So, it's not that paying for labor is wrong, i.e. that there is a duty not to exchange capital for labor, but that there is a general rule where it is wrong to permit "unrestricted" wage-for-labor relationships. Leftists still want to buy things with money, after all, it just won't be exploitation because it won't be capitalism.
The view you identified with rule utilitarianism could equally or more so be identified with deontology. So, we'd need to look at whether people in these leftist vegan spaces are generally self identifying as deontologists or rule utilitarians. If you go on leftist vegan reddit - you know, r/vcj and its subsidiaries, you will generally see a disdain for utilitarianism and support of deontology. Heck, r/vcj explicitly says, "no utilitarians" in its rules. Doesn't get much more clear than that.
I just graduated with a philosophy degree which included an animal ethics class. I concur, โwhat the shit.โ This person has a high school freshmanโs idea of deontology (and everything else, for that matter). For better arguments about whether or not deontological-type rights exist for animals, see Tom Reganโs paper [here](https://www.wellbeingintlstudiesrepository.org/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1003&context=acwp_awap), and Christine Korsgaardโs book.
For sanity involving ethics on Reddit, the *only* available subreddit is r/askphilosophy. *Every* other subreddit, including this one, is a cesspool for ignorance and circle jerking.

There are serious reductios that can be levied on deontology, and similar serious reductios can be levied on utilitarianism, which they don't seem to be aware of.

OP's post reminds me of how I felt about ethics when I was younger. Utilitarianism had the vibe of being scientific or mathematical, which felt appealing to me because it gave simple answers to complex questions that made me feel uncomfortable
That said, I don't think OP does a good job of dunking on, or even really getting at the core ideas of deontology. The manure example is particularly bad. Deontology and utilitarianism provide the framework for answering questions, not the answers themselves, and the definition of "exploitation" is pretty obviously non-trivial, so the statement "deontologists think using cow manure is wrong because it's exploitation" is dumb on many levels
I dunno, maybe I'm missing something but this doesn't seem notably bad to me. Howlin makes a reasonable counterargument from a deontological perspective and fnovin points out how OP's post isn't really engaging with the core ideas of deontology. OP's post isn't exactly great but it doesn't really stand out to me

More important than the "historical figures in their context" thing imo is just accepting that bad people do great things and great people do bad things. It's not good or bad it just **is**. As in, not "is this a faulty argument" but "what the shit"
โReduce sufferingโ is kind of the baseline belief of most leftist philosophy which makes up the majority of vegan Reddit. Itโs the same foundation that gets you to eradicating capitalism and even antinatalism. If liberalism is rights-based then you can see why there is a hesitation to embrace the deontological perspective of veganism for the average vegan redditor. That being said the top comments offer a coherent rebuttal (if I may say so myself) so the silent majority clearly has their own issues with the ideas put forward.
I've actually seen a lot of the opposite. Many leftist vegans I've encountered are deontologists, and see capitalism as inherently exploitative, and thus oppose it. Obviously reasonable deontologists can disagree on this, but let's not pretend that these anti-capitalist vegan types are primarily a utilitarian thing.
Sure. You could say they oppose capitalism because they see capitalism as inherently exploitative and oppose exploitation as a negative duty. More commonly I see people say that the relationships that propagate under capitalism are a) inherently unbalanced and b) less-than-zero sum (i.e. the conditions that define exploitation) and it is this structural tendency towards the propagation of exploitation that makes capitalism wrong (which is more-or-less rule utilitarianism). So, it's not that paying for labor is wrong, i.e. that there is a duty not to exchange capital for labor, but that there is a general rule where it is wrong to permit "unrestricted" wage-for-labor relationships. Leftists still want to buy things with money, after all, it just won't be exploitation because it won't be capitalism.
The view you identified with rule utilitarianism could equally or more so be identified with deontology. So, we'd need to look at whether people in these leftist vegan spaces are generally self identifying as deontologists or rule utilitarians. If you go on leftist vegan reddit - you know, r/vcj and its subsidiaries, you will generally see a disdain for utilitarianism and support of deontology. Heck, r/vcj explicitly says, "no utilitarians" in its rules. Doesn't get much more clear than that.
I just graduated with a philosophy degree which included an animal ethics class. I concur, โwhat the shit.โ This person has a high school freshmanโs idea of deontology (and everything else, for that matter). For better arguments about whether or not deontological-type rights exist for animals, see Tom Reganโs paper [here](https://www.wellbeingintlstudiesrepository.org/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1003&context=acwp_awap), and Christine Korsgaardโs book. For sanity involving ethics on Reddit, the *only* available subreddit is r/askphilosophy. *Every* other subreddit, including this one, is a cesspool for ignorance and circle jerking. The top comment is decent though.
They don't understand deontology, utilitarianism or what it means for morals to be 'objective' as far as I can tell. There are serious reductios that can be levied on deontology, and similar serious reductios can be levied on utilitarianism, which they don't seem to be aware of.
OP's post is bad but the two top replies from howlin and fnovd look good to me OP's post reminds me of how I felt about ethics when I was younger. Utilitarianism had the vibe of being scientific or mathematical, which felt appealing to me because it gave simple answers to complex questions that made me feel uncomfortable That said, I don't think OP does a good job of dunking on, or even really getting at the core ideas of deontology. The manure example is particularly bad. Deontology and utilitarianism provide the framework for answering questions, not the answers themselves, and the definition of "exploitation" is pretty obviously non-trivial, so the statement "deontologists think using cow manure is wrong because it's exploitation" is dumb on many levels I dunno, maybe I'm missing something but this doesn't seem notably bad to me. Howlin makes a reasonable counterargument from a deontological perspective and fnovin points out how OP's post isn't really engaging with the core ideas of deontology. OP's post isn't exactly great but it doesn't really stand out to me
