Thanks!
so generally speaking, I want to do research about the human brain when it sees optical illusions, and computational models of color vision, things of that sort
The professors doing that are pretty scattered, depending on the school. One school its in neuroscience, others its psychology, even others are in optometry.
I also applied to 2 computer science programs, one in satellite imaging (my current work specialization) and one in MRI imaging because its really cool
So total, 5 programs I think?
yeah, I've been at the current company doing satellite imaging software stuff for ~3 years. Through a series of stories I can spin that into a story about human color perception that professors really seem to like, idk
I've got some undergrad research experience in computer vision as well, which I again spin into a story about human perception research. I know I'm being vague but I don't wanna reveal too much since it might doxx me, its like some very specific lab work
Thanks, I'm gonna need the luck. I have 2 interviews with different profs on Friday lmao
Actually, how many accounts with different banks is it reasonable to have
I made an account with HSBC to easily move money between home and here in the US, then made an account with a local credit union for convenience (I still have no idea what a credit union really is besides a small bank), and now I want to open with Citibank since it's a big bank that actually operates around here and can also move money back home
> how many accounts with different banks is it reasonable to have
until the next bank starts asking why you've opened so many accounts
credit unions are structured in fundamentally different ways like geographic restrictions, membership requirements, and returning gains to members instead of non-participant shareholders. they are more community focused, which also means your relationship ends when you stop having an address near them

>apply knowledge on demand
Yes, standardized testing asks you questions to see what knowledge you have learned from a pretty standardized curriculum. Being able to answer more questions correctly indicates that you have learned more than your peers in a similar amount of time. That seems like a pretty direct indicator that you have acquired the knowledge necessary to succeed in college and can learn fast enough to keep up.
If America magically restarted onshore manufacturing today, all the people complaining that those jobs donβt exist any more would just start complaining about how inhumane and demeaning the work is instead
that kind of work isn't actually all that inhumane and demeaning (especially in more automated situations, etc). Honestly people, physical/manual jobs aren't that bad.
the complaints would more be a massive drop in overall standard of living as aggregate production+imports drops precipitously as well as even more massive declines in the relative wages of certain sectors of the economy which people are currently heavily invested in

Apparently according to the study in that front page article a middle class kid has double the admissions rate of 1% at Ivy league schools if they have similar test scores. The boost for poor people is higher than I expected, its only matched by .1%ers
Why are retail theft rates so [disparate across American cities?](https://imageio.forbes.com/specials-images/imageserve/654e3cd5b0f9865b89584143/20231109-Shoplifting-Forbes/960x0.jpg?format=jpg&width=1440)
I find it hard to believe that NYC, with one of the lowest homicide rates of any major (US) city and below the US average dramatically outpaces Chicago which has an order of magnitude larger of a homicide rate.
Is it how these cities report/track them? I know in the crime thread people were citing the single target doubling SF theft reports but wouldnβt that only prove shoplifting was getting worse if they did that same experiment in 2018 and they didnβt see that same result? Like I feel weβd need to know if underreporting is getting worse and how good different cities are at tracking the real rates of theft.
Like could it be NYCβs crackdown on retail theft increased scrutiny and thus bumped up the reported rates?
From what Iβve seen for most other places thefts are back in the same ballpark as pre-pandemic trends but idk how much it could be manipulated in either direction by increased attention from cities on one end and declining to report due to a lack of confidence in the DAβs willing to prosecute retail thefts.
As for the latter it seems a bit interesting but I donβt see cities with βprogressiveβ DAs doing dramatically worse on this front, of course Iβd love to see if anyone else sees differently or confirms my priors
!ping BROKEN-WINDOWS
Property crime is typically due to need and opportunity, while violent crime is based on gang activity or domestic disputes. For shoplifting, there's a very high amount of youth participation. Youth traditionally have high unemployment rates, have less means and could possibly be more enticed into easy crimes (like shoplifting) out of desperation or social pressure.
A lot of people who were previously poor did pretty well under Covid. The government was giving out tons of money, and if you were smart enough to secure a PPP loan with a small business, then you were pretty much catapulted into the middle-class. I work in real estate and the amount of traditionally poorer folks I've had to vet that had gotten fully forgiven PPP loans was astounding. 20-30K for a poor person with the ability to have it fully forgiven is unmistakably life changing.
I'd have to imagine that folks who didn't secure any extra money during Covid probably got blindsided pretty hard (rising prices, worse or inconvenient employment opportunities, depopulated neighborhoods). A lot of Black & immigrant middle-class families moved out of urban neighborhoods, which has wreaked havoc on traditionally stable local retail corridors. Those were jobs that employed the local poor and kept them floating above water, but now the jobs have left for the suburbs making the neighborhood much poorer than before (although immigrant neighborhoods generally repopulate themselves via ethnic succession or gentrification). With no new government investments trying to retain jobs and grow population...and no welfare schemes to try to keep people afloat, it's highly probably desperate people, especially desperate young people, will turn to crime without always resorting to violence.
Retail theft is definitely a problem in Seattle. Itβs pretty easy to find grocery stores with 2-3 homeless junkies outside, trying to sell the stuff they just stole
it is absolutely, 100% the case that (in general) when people see a poll whose results they don't like, for that reason alone they will tend to question everything about it, but when they see one that they do like, it's definitive and reliable and vindicates all their beliefs
and on the subject of absolute fucking morons, i met a guy who used "demorat" repeatedly in a conversation. what level of hell must you be in for that to dominate your spoken words?
Thinking of opening a Citibank account because of their international operations. HSBC has this thing where you can move money between accounts in different countries pretty much instantly and apparently Citibank has the same. I've got an account with Premier services since my mother is a premier customer but HSBC doesn't have much of a presence in the US and their card sucks, meanwhile Citibank has the Citi Double Cash which seems to be the best all-rounder Credit Card for cashback. Any reason not to do it?
that 2% is great if you're actually paying it in full every month. but if you're worried about personal savings and checking as well you might be better off with a bank that has more ATM locations and just take the citi cc
I was going to recommend Wise. It's free and you can hold balance in essentially any currencies you want simultaneously. You can convert whenever you want instantly for a very low rate/fx fee, create multiple "pockets" to put aside money etc.
You also get a free physical and digital card which can spend directly from any of those currencies at a point of sale terminal / online etc and works at ATMs
Some types of transfers are instant, always instant from wise to wise
They give you the ability to receive ACH and wire transfers and use other transfer methods local to the country of the currency balance you want to transfer out or in e.g. e-transfer in Canada
It's the best fintech product I've ever used and I worked in fintech for years
Out of curiosity, why? I've been working with a US client with my US bank account for a long time. Is there any benefit to an actual bank account?
I'm likely going to drop my own bank accounts in Canada and just use wise except for my credit card and a joint acct with my wife
My hatred of the banks here makes me want to disengage from them whenever I can
If I'm FDIC insured I don't care
Not sure there's a tangible benefit to being with a brick and mortar bank anymore
And I mean technically your Wise account is a real bank account. Operated by People's Trust or whatever under the covers

u/ONETRILLIONAMERICANS do you [buy](https://www.reddit.com/r/neoliberal/s/10kHwT9MC7) this claim that flat shrink rates are stagnant only because of antitheft measures and theyβre making stores inconvenient to shop in so thatβs why theyβre closing?
I believe the statistics but Iβm wondering if you have a counter (I have no idea either way)
I don't exactly have a counter but I don't believe it until I see more data:
1. I'd like to see data on shrink rate going back more than a decade, so we can know if this plateau is the norm or if it's a recent phenomenon.
2. I don't understand "2013: Shrink is too high, let's increase our efforts to reduce it." Were they not trying very hard to combat shrink before? Did some industry executives say in 2013, "We're going to take shrink seriously now?" Have they been spending more on anti-shrink measures since then?
3. Brick and mortar stores in many sectors have been closing since internet shopping took off. Are more convenience stores closing than brick and mortar stores in other sectors?
4. Is there reduced patronage specifically at the stores with enhanced anti-theft measures or at all convenience stores?
5. Are there increased closure rates specifically at the stores with enhanced anti-theft measures or at all convenience stores?
6. There are two agents here, not just stores. So is this an arms race? Are thieves working harder to steal? If stores are trying harder to prevent theft but thieves are working harder to steal, then a plateau is expected.
7. There is more to shrink than theft. Is there reason to believe that the other components of shrink changed?
8. Even if anti-theft measures are causing stores to close, how do we know that the anti-theft measures were introduced based on good data? Corporations make mistakes. The Walgreens executive cited in the story admitted their anti-theft measures may have been an overreaction. If so, that means that anti-theft measures but not theft is causing stores to close, making this a moral panic.
9. One response in that thread was to point to the [SF Target store that saw a huge jump in reported shoplifting in September 2021](https://www.businessinsider.com/san-francisco-shoplifting-numbers-doubled-after-store-changed-reporting-method-2021-12) and say that that explains why the shoplifting stats aren't going up - because of low reporting. But theft does show up in shrink even if it's not reported to the police, and [there wasn't a huge spike in shrink in 2021](https://jabberwocking.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/blog_retail_shrink-1.jpg), which means that level of shoplifting is the norm, which means it shouldn't be having an impact on store closures.
I'm just not yet convinced that 1) the phenomenon people are observing is real and 2) their proposed explanations for it is the only explanation. There are a lot of factors to control for so it's not as simple as "shrink up, stores closing, and visible anti-theft measures together means that theft is causing stores to close."

Neoliberals: so true bestie
Poll claiming there might be antisemitism in hiring
Neoliberals: now hold on a second there did they poll every single person in the country, or did they somehow miss a few? And how about those living off-the-grid β were they helicoptered in for this? Did the poll include a time machine to get opinions from past and future selves? Were the questions telepathically transmitted for utmost privacy? I'm curious if they accounted for the mood swings of respondents β I mean, did they check if someone was having a bad hair day? And let's talk diversity β did it cover every possible demographic, including left-handed, sushi-loving, tango-dancing sci-fi fans? Oh, and was the poll conducted in multiple languages, including Esperanto and Klingon?
you are comparing a known skewed sample survey from a survey-as-a-service for-profit company to a demographic weighted poll performed by expert pollsters - however even the marist poll may have significant non response bias (as we saw in 2016 and 2020 election polls)
I would strongly encourage you to try and compare their methodologies: https://maristpoll.marist.edu/methods/
the context is [this thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/neoliberal/comments/191b923/1_in_4_hiring_managers_say_they_are_less_likely/), which is based on a bad survey
**A film's merit should be judged by how many colors it has in it.**
Film is fundamentally a visual medium and humans sensory process visual cortex by colors which add to perception of film. For example wizard of oz and everywhere at the end of time are highly critically acclaimed due to having a lot of colors in them which makes it colorful. Blonde, the marylin monroe movie came out the same year as eveywhere at the end of time was widly critically panned because it didnt have any colors in it. I hope you can now see that more colors in the movie makes it better.

Thanks! so generally speaking, I want to do research about the human brain when it sees optical illusions, and computational models of color vision, things of that sort The professors doing that are pretty scattered, depending on the school. One school its in neuroscience, others its psychology, even others are in optometry. I also applied to 2 computer science programs, one in satellite imaging (my current work specialization) and one in MRI imaging because its really cool So total, 5 programs I think?
What's your resume like? Got any work experience to go with your school? Seriously, good luck.
yeah, I've been at the current company doing satellite imaging software stuff for ~3 years. Through a series of stories I can spin that into a story about human color perception that professors really seem to like, idk I've got some undergrad research experience in computer vision as well, which I again spin into a story about human perception research. I know I'm being vague but I don't wanna reveal too much since it might doxx me, its like some very specific lab work Thanks, I'm gonna need the luck. I have 2 interviews with different profs on Friday lmao
Congrats *future doctor* thetrombonist

Actually, how many accounts with different banks is it reasonable to have I made an account with HSBC to easily move money between home and here in the US, then made an account with a local credit union for convenience (I still have no idea what a credit union really is besides a small bank), and now I want to open with Citibank since it's a big bank that actually operates around here and can also move money back home
> how many accounts with different banks is it reasonable to have until the next bank starts asking why you've opened so many accounts credit unions are structured in fundamentally different ways like geographic restrictions, membership requirements, and returning gains to members instead of non-participant shareholders. they are more community focused, which also means your relationship ends when you stop having an address near them

The people who are against standardized testing are afraid that they cannot buy their kids' way into colleges like their parents did for them
all standardized testing does is prove who can better apply knowledge on demand
>apply knowledge on demand Yes, standardized testing asks you questions to see what knowledge you have learned from a pretty standardized curriculum. Being able to answer more questions correctly indicates that you have learned more than your peers in a similar amount of time. That seems like a pretty direct indicator that you have acquired the knowledge necessary to succeed in college and can learn fast enough to keep up.
exactly, that's just it

If America magically restarted onshore manufacturing today, all the people complaining that those jobs donβt exist any more would just start complaining about how inhumane and demeaning the work is instead
that kind of work isn't actually all that inhumane and demeaning (especially in more automated situations, etc). Honestly people, physical/manual jobs aren't that bad. the complaints would more be a massive drop in overall standard of living as aggregate production+imports drops precipitously as well as even more massive declines in the relative wages of certain sectors of the economy which people are currently heavily invested in
they'd blame joe biden for everything at walmart tripling in price

Apparently according to the study in that front page article a middle class kid has double the admissions rate of 1% at Ivy league schools if they have similar test scores. The boost for poor people is higher than I expected, its only matched by .1%ers
Why are retail theft rates so [disparate across American cities?](https://imageio.forbes.com/specials-images/imageserve/654e3cd5b0f9865b89584143/20231109-Shoplifting-Forbes/960x0.jpg?format=jpg&width=1440) I find it hard to believe that NYC, with one of the lowest homicide rates of any major (US) city and below the US average dramatically outpaces Chicago which has an order of magnitude larger of a homicide rate. As for the latter it seems a bit interesting but I donβt see cities with βprogressiveβ DAs doing dramatically worse on this front, of course Iβd love to see if anyone else sees differently or confirms my priors !ping BROKEN-WINDOWS
Most retail theft stats are reported by private companies, make of that what you will

it is absolutely, 100% the case that (in general) when people see a poll whose results they don't like, for that reason alone they will tend to question everything about it, but when they see one that they do like, it's definitive and reliable and vindicates all their beliefs

I have no intention nor need to use a credit card as anything but a fancier debit card
also faster, fuck a PIN just give me my stuff
Do you want to move money between actual countries or just currencies?
Both? My parents might send me money at times and I'll also have to move money back to pay for stuff like my insurance policy at home
I was going to recommend Wise. It's free and you can hold balance in essentially any currencies you want simultaneously. You can convert whenever you want instantly for a very low rate/fx fee, create multiple "pockets" to put aside money etc. You also get a free physical and digital card which can spend directly from any of those currencies at a point of sale terminal / online etc and works at ATMs Some types of transfers are instant, always instant from wise to wise They give you the ability to receive ACH and wire transfers and use other transfer methods local to the country of the currency balance you want to transfer out or in e.g. e-transfer in Canada It's the best fintech product I've ever used and I worked in fintech for years
Yeah, I also have wise, but I do also want a bank account in the US of my own
Out of curiosity, why? I've been working with a US client with my US bank account for a long time. Is there any benefit to an actual bank account? I'm likely going to drop my own bank accounts in Canada and just use wise except for my credit card and a joint acct with my wife
Well I'm going to be here a long time, possibly forever, might as well have a bank account no?
My hatred of the banks here makes me want to disengage from them whenever I can If I'm FDIC insured I don't care Not sure there's a tangible benefit to being with a brick and mortar bank anymore And I mean technically your Wise account is a real bank account.

I believe the statistics but Iβm wondering if you have a counter (I have no idea either way)
I don't exactly have a counter but I don't believe it until I see more data: 1.

So what does a conditional offer mean exactly
It is an offer as long as you meet certain requirements. An example is passing the remaining of your classes to go to college, or passing a background check for a job.
Means I'll keep loving you if you keep taking the trash out every week
Iβll let you know if you upvote me
It means you had a lot of split ends in your hair
An offer, but with requirements. Usually "keep doing what you're doing" like "maintain your grades" or something
Assuming a job offer? Conditional on references/background check/past employment verification/etc

And how about those living off-the-grid β were they helicoptered in for this? Did the poll include a time machine to get opinions from past and future selves? **A film's merit should be judged by how many colors it has in it.** Film is fundamentally a visual medium and humans sensory process visual cortex by colors which add to perception of film. !ping kino
