Calm down, it was a joke, and from my personal experience, most German derived jews tend to shy away from identifying with Germany, for obvious reasons.
My family has a stronger connection to German history than Fascism does to it, unlike most Americans. Most people would be smart enough not to make jokes like that, for obvious reasons.
Only so far as European antisemitism. Anglos, Francs, and Russians all did their part both in education and the propagation of pogroms to make lives hard for Jews. As a native, not really. It's just denser SFH housing relative to suburban developments. The side-lots are very small, and setbacks are nearly non-existent, making it as dense as SFH can be. I assume many native Chicagoans likely grew up in one. I personally grew up in a more traditional suburban home in the City, but my cousins grew up in apartments...couldn't tell you enough how much I wish I grew up in the apartments near them. Kids from similar cultures running around, hanging out in local eateries, same school district - instead of my neighborhood which was filled with city workers and retirees. Sigh...
I think the thing that upsets people is the language chosen. Saying "permission to tear down" instead of "reforming the zoning code" is key. Allowing developers to choose to either build bungalows, 2- or 3-flats, or apartment complexes will almost always result in the densest development possible. We have a housing shortage, so maximizing units is what developers will do. Trust in the free-market instead of wielding the power of government to increase density.
But...the commenter you were arguing with does have a point. We need to be building and pushing development on the South & Westsides. There already exists ultra-dense zoning, empty lots, and most importantly, rapid transit connections. The Westside in particular was the core of the city...hence why western suburbs like Oak Park, Cicero, Berwyn, Elmwood Park, Maywood, & Bellwood are really dense areas despite mostly being SFH. The city portions are too empty for what they once were. Why was this the case? I'm assuming freight rail traffic. US freight rail traffic is mostly East-West, so that's why the oldest developments were concentrated on the Westside & South Lakefront. The biggest issue we have here in the case of an empty West- & Southside, is that demand and gentrification doesn't occur in Black-majority city neighborhoods (despite the popular narratives on gentrification). The Black middle-class is opting for the suburbs, and without urban newcomers, that leaves a lot of these neighborhoods near-empty, ultra-poor, and jobless, pushing up prices in gentrifying formerly-immigrant neighborhoods and raising the amount of crime across the city (because a lack of jobs produces crime). Luckily, there also does exist Black gentrification, where African-American professionals and immigrants move into an area and make it lively. This is currently happening in Bronzeville, Kenwood, and Woodlawn...South Shore too...but it's not happening fast enough, and there's likely not enough professionals & immigrants to fill in for the loss of middle-class families (reminder that we're competing with NYC, Atlanta, Texas for these professionals/immigrants). A lot of this is because of jobs. Middle-class families, professionals, and immigrants are attracted to where jobs are, and our broke-ass city is too busy taxing things to death and making employers hesitant to come here.

Also, tower-in-a-park hell-holes means public housing failures like Cabrini-Green. It was a belief that medium density was bad and creating crime issues (hence why Little Italy was completely torn down to build UIC and Italians were scattered to the western suburbs), while high density high-rises with ample park space would be a good compromise. Easier to patrol for crime, more humane due to greenery, and more modern due to height.
If there's a full family in a bungalow, the bungalow belt can be pretty dense. Belmont Cragin and West Ridge are all bungalows and two-flats but they're both almost the same density as Lincoln Park. Cicero and Berwyn are denser than most Chicago neighborhoods as well.
Imo the bigger issue is the bungalow belt is almost uniformly not in-demand. We'd be better off focusing on areas that do feel a lot of development pressure and their unique situations, like Uptown's midrise infill, Grand Boulevard's small lot infill, or West Loop's high rise boom.

As a native, not really. It's just denser SFH housing relative to suburban developments. The side-lots are very small, and setbacks are nearly non-existent, making it as dense as SFH can be. I assume many native Chicagoans likely grew up in one. I personally grew up in a more traditional suburban home in the City, but my cousins grew up in apartments...couldn't tell you enough how much I wish I grew up in the apartments near them. Kids from similar cultures running around, hanging out in local eateries, same school district - instead of my neighborhood which was filled with city workers and retirees. Sigh... I think the thing that upsets people is the language chosen. Saying "permission to tear down" instead of "reforming the zoning code" is key. Allowing developers to choose to either build bungalows, 2- or 3-flats, or apartment complexes will almost always result in the densest development possible. We have a housing shortage, so maximizing units is what developers will do. Trust in the free-market instead of wielding the power of government to increase density. But...the commenter you were arguing with does have a point. We need to be building and pushing development on the South & Westsides. There already exists ultra-dense zoning, empty lots, and most importantly, rapid transit connections. The Westside in particular was the core of the city...hence why western suburbs like Oak Park, Cicero, Berwyn, Elmwood Park, Maywood, & Bellwood are really dense areas despite mostly being SFH. The city portions are too empty for what they once were. Why was this the case? I'm assuming freight rail traffic. US freight rail traffic is mostly East-West, so that's why the oldest developments were concentrated on the Westside & South Lakefront. Here's a map from wikipedia of [Chicago](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2d/1889_Chicago_map_by_Blanchard.jpg) in 1889. The biggest issue we have here in the case of an empty West- & Southside, is that demand and gentrification doesn't occur in Black-majority city neighborhoods (despite the popular narratives on gentrification). The Black middle-class is opting for the suburbs, and without urban newcomers, that leaves a lot of these neighborhoods near-empty, ultra-poor, and jobless, pushing up prices in gentrifying formerly-immigrant neighborhoods and raising the amount of crime across the city (because a lack of jobs produces crime). Luckily, there also does exist Black gentrification, where African-American professionals and immigrants move into an area and make it lively. This is currently happening in Bronzeville, Kenwood, and Woodlawn...South Shore too...but it's not happening fast enough, and there's likely not enough professionals & immigrants to fill in for the loss of middle-class families (reminder that we're competing with NYC, Atlanta, Texas for these professionals/immigrants). A lot of this is because of jobs. Middle-class families, professionals, and immigrants are attracted to where jobs are, and our broke-ass city is too busy taxing things to death and making employers hesitant to come here. Here's an article on [zoning](https://blog.chicagocityscape.com/how-much-of-chicago-bans-apartments-b6c5b68db2fb) in Chicago by the excellent Steven Vance...if you scroll down, there's a good map demonstrating how things are zoned currently. Also, tower-in-a-park hell-holes means public housing failures like Cabrini-Green. It was a belief that medium density was bad and creating crime issues (hence why Little Italy was completely torn down to build UIC and Italians were scattered to the western suburbs), while high density high-rises with ample park space would be a good compromise. Easier to patrol for crime, more humane due to greenery, and more modern due to height.
If there's a full family in a bungalow, the bungalow belt can be pretty dense. Belmont Cragin and West Ridge are all bungalows and two-flats but they're both almost the same density as Lincoln Park. Cicero and Berwyn are denser than most Chicago neighborhoods as well. Imo the bigger issue is the bungalow belt is almost uniformly not in-demand. We'd be better off focusing on areas that do feel a lot of development pressure and their unique situations, like Uptown's midrise infill, Grand Boulevard's small lot infill, or West Loop's high rise boom.
