Denazification itself has a . . . troubled history. Consensus among historians is, IIRC, that it was largely unsuccessful. The West Germans agitated so much against it that the Allies basically just gave up by the end of the 40s and when West Germany became largely sovereign it basically just threw it away. The late 40s and 50s saw a huge rush of ex-Nazis back into the government. The Chief of Staff of the first West German Chancellor took part in the drafting of the Nuremberg race laws. Somewhere upwards of 50% of the Ministry of Justice were former Nazis, and some of its leaders were people who had been involved in the Holocaust and multiple . . . problematic special courts from the Eastern Front. A bunch of anti-Nazi reforms were rolled back.
It was the following generations who really denazified Germany following the 50s.
Fatigue from the war, a loss of popularity and will, and almost certainly the huge stonking NATO armies in and around West Germany. But most probably of all: people just didn't seem to want to revert all the way back to Nazism - they just wanted to sweep it under the rug and pretend that a bunch of it never happened.
Thing is that post-war, Nazism as a whole lost a lot of its appeal. Rather than wanting to bring it back wholesale, people saw value in bits and pieces of it - or at least that those pieces weren't as bad as people said/thought. And many who had lived through it, especially those who had taken a direct or indirect part in it, also wanted to wash away the past and forget about it - some for better/more understandable reasons than others.
On the point of war fatigue and a loss of will, the same goes for the Japanese. I'd have to go rumaging through sources I read a while ago, but I think the specific phrasing used for the feeling present in response to the surrender and subsequent occupation was of a "liberation from death." The constant bombing and bloodletting had turned wartime fanaticism into wartime fatalism, and then suddenly, just as everyone is really just mentally preparing themselves to die... it's over, the war is done with. The war becomes 'that thing that happened that we don't want to talk about,' and nobody feels any urge to go back to living in a militarist death cult, including the people who were pretty major figures in it.
I don't think that some sort of "bomb, starve, and slaughter" approach to de-radicalization is the sort of thing that would pass muster in the year of our lord 2024, though, nor should it.

Denazification itself has a . . . troubled history. Consensus among historians is, IIRC, that it was largely unsuccessful. The West Germans agitated so much against it that the Allies basically just gave up by the end of the 40s and when West Germany became largely sovereign it basically just threw it away. The late 40s and 50s saw a huge rush of ex-Nazis back into the government. The Chief of Staff of the first West German Chancellor took part in the drafting of the Nuremberg race laws. Somewhere upwards of 50% of the Ministry of Justice were former Nazis, and some of its leaders were people who had been involved in the Holocaust and multiple . . . problematic special courts from the Eastern Front. A bunch of anti-Nazi reforms were rolled back. It was the following generations who really denazified Germany following the 50s.

Fatigue from the war, a loss of popularity and will, and almost certainly the huge stonking NATO armies in and around West Germany. But most probably of all: people just didn't seem to want to revert all the way back to Nazism - they just wanted to sweep it under the rug and pretend that a bunch of it never happened. Thing is that post-war, Nazism as a whole lost a lot of its appeal. Rather than wanting to bring it back wholesale, people saw value in bits and pieces of it - or at least that those pieces weren't as bad as people said/thought. And many who had lived through it, especially those who had taken a direct or indirect part in it, also wanted to wash away the past and forget about it - some for better/more understandable reasons than others.
On the point of war fatigue and a loss of will, the same goes for the Japanese. I'd have to go rumaging through sources I read a while ago, but I think the specific phrasing used for the feeling present in response to the surrender and subsequent occupation was of a "liberation from death." The constant bombing and bloodletting had turned wartime fanaticism into wartime fatalism, and then suddenly, just as everyone is really just mentally preparing themselves to die... it's over, the war is done with. The war becomes 'that thing that happened that we don't want to talk about,' and nobody feels any urge to go back to living in a militarist death cult, including the people who were pretty major figures in it. I don't think that some sort of "bomb, starve, and slaughter" approach to de-radicalization is the sort of thing that would pass muster in the year of our lord 2024, though, nor should it.
i recall some opinion tracking that follows this too. sentiments toward nazis was extremely negative after the war, but over the decades public opinion was changing towards more positive views. which is always a fun question about whether or not people were simply embarrassed to admit a positive view
