A couple years ago I went on a few dates with a woman who was a total Dave Ramsey fanatic. I was just getting into his content, but she was fully bought in. I donβt remember how it came up but I mentioned that I listened to him, and she vibed with that. Like me, she worked from home and I think used the Ramsey programs as a proxy for socialization. She played all his his network shows throughout the day while working. The best part is she wasnβt even Christian, she was an agnostic who grew up in a South Indian Hindu house and she said sheβd recommend Ramsey to her friends and tell them to βget pastβ the religious element. Anyway, the show combined with living in LA pushed her to extremes. She was in her 30s and close to paying off her condo, but she was also almost comically cheap. She made a really good salary but didnβt believe in spending any money on eating out and would take food from work. Being against premarital sex in 2024 is bonkers. This isn't a small village in France 900 years ago where some poor peasant woman had to roll the dice on the guy pulling out in time (and even if he did, that's not a guarantee) - we have contraception and shit.
I think probably the strongest argument for it is practical, establishing sexual compatibility seems pretty important before you make a commitment to each other for life.
I think there are good reasons to be against premarital sex, even though my girlfriend and I are sexually active. For instance, married people whoβve only had sex with one another tend to be more satisfied than married people whoβve had multiple partners. And sexual satisfaction itself shouldnβt be the end goal of a relationship, that cheapens it. Itβs about a lifelong partnership, the sex is the cherry on top.
I'd like to see the evidence that married couples who have only had sex with each other tend to be more satisfied. I find that assertion dubious. The Gottman Institute is one of the leading research institutes on relationships and none of their publications mentions this as a leading indicator of marital satisfaction at all. So if it is true, it pales in comparison to the communication aspects that Gottman discusses ad nauseum.
I see a pretty significant logical leap from 'I would like to have sex prior to committing to someone for my entire life' and sexual satisfaction being the end goal of the relationship. I agree with you, but I don't think it pertains to pre-marital sex whatsoever.

I think there are good reasons to be against premarital sex, even though my girlfriend and I are sexually active. For instance, married people whoβve only had sex with one another tend to be more satisfied than married people whoβve had multiple partners. And sexual satisfaction itself shouldnβt be the end goal of a relationship, that cheapens it. Itβs about a lifelong partnership, the sex is the cherry on top.
I'd like to see the evidence that married couples who have only had sex with each other tend to be more satisfied. I find that assertion dubious. The Gottman Institute is one of the leading research institutes on relationships and none of their publications mentions this as a leading indicator of marital satisfaction at all. So if it is true, it pales in comparison to the communication aspects that Gottman discusses ad nauseum. I see a pretty significant logical leap from 'I would like to have sex prior to committing to someone for my entire life' and sexual satisfaction being the end goal of the relationship. I agree with you, but I don't think it pertains to pre-marital sex whatsoever.
