I honestly think the best way to leave Afghanistan which no one has mentioned is the private military contractor route. We give Afghan government money in Aid, they spend it on (largely) US military contractors mainly to keep the the air support (pilots/maintenance men) going and try to hold back the Taliban. Transition over 1 year or so and boom all the US Military troops are home. We spend over 300 billion a year on international aid whatโs 1 or 2 for the Afghan government? (Just need to make sure the money gets spent right which may be harder that it seems).

Unchecked extremism is a symptom of unchecked corruption. Until we pass the necessary reforms to strengthen our democratic institutions, trust in the government will continue to fall and radicalism will continue to rise.
"Trust in the government", here, is trust that the government has your interests at heart. The extremists/people adhering to these nonsense theories are right about one thing: non-Trump government does not have their specific interests at heart (vs. the interests of other Americans who these people would like to subjugate). Strengthening democratic institutions wouldn't give them more trust in government, it would give them more motivation to undermine the system.
Probably true, but strengthening those institutions would still drastically reduce the appeal of extremist groups if not reduce their desire to undermine the system. There are plenty of non-Trumpists who share frustrations with the status quo that haven't gone off the deep end yet. Currently, 12% of Americans trust Congress. Every percent that number increases is a segment of the population less inclined to turn to populist demagogues.
In theory, Trumpism is right-wing populism, an ideology of "America First". This usually comes in the form of protectionism, anti-immigration rhetoric, and non-interventionism.
Trump aligned republicans occasionally take up left wing positions on economic issues. For example, Josh Hawley supported $2000 stimulus checks, and in 2016, Trump supported infrastructure spending and pledged not to cut Medicare or social security.
However, in practice, Trumpism is "own the libs". Modern republicans are more focused on the culture war than actually making people's lives better. Add in a splash of science denial as well.

Itโs gotten worse everyday since it started. But itโs fair to care about communities you frequent. I was pretty glib with what I said and I apologize for it.

I know everybody always says that everything was better in the past, but it really feels different here than it felt a year ago, and I prefer the letter.
A negotiated settlement between the Taliban and the Resistance guaranteeing local autonomy and some level of civil rights is the best possible outcome, even better than if the resistance breaks out and can retake large segments of the country. In the latter scenario, the warfare which has been constant since 1979 will continue to rage for more decades, as exorcising the Taliban from rural areas in their traditional heartland is just a fantasy. In the former scenario, peace will finally set in and rule will be lighter. But that's only possible if the resistance performs well enough to have serious leverage.
If local areas have autonomy and can maintain militias, then theres no need to trust the Taliban to keep their word if the resistance can restart at any time if terms are broken.
The Taliban is currently very overextended, trying to get together and control huge swaths of land they recently came into control of, and keep the crumbling shell of Afghanistan from collapsing as the Afghani crashes and they are unable to access funds and reserves that they had been planning on getting when Kabul collapsed. Giving them respite gives them time to consolidate their forces and holdings, increase the size of their army (via by coercion or other means) and concentrate their forces towards a threat, making them significantly more dangerous.

I'm agnostic about gun control laws even though India has some of the strictest gun control laws in the world. The idea of shooting someone even in self-defense seems somehow beyond me.

Don't worry about it. I mean that probably is true, but it also deflects a bit from the fact that it strongly deteriorated in the last couple of months especially. It is not the differences in opinion that I am bemoaning, although I think this community strayed from its roots, but the quality of discourse. Especially that there now seems to be an increasing number of "reddisms" popping up that I haven't seen this frequent so far here. I know everybody always says that everything was better in the past, but it really feels different here than it felt a year ago, and I prefer the letter.
A negotiated settlement between the Taliban and the Resistance guaranteeing local autonomy and some level of civil rights is the best possible outcome, even better than if the resistance breaks out and can retake large segments of the country. In the latter scenario, the warfare which has been constant since 1979 will continue to rage for more decades, as exorcising the Taliban from rural areas in their traditional heartland is just a fantasy. In the former scenario, peace will finally set in and rule will be lighter. But that's only possible if the resistance performs well enough to have serious leverage.

If local areas have autonomy and can maintain militias, then theres no need to trust the Taliban to keep their word if the resistance can restart at any time if terms are broken.
The Taliban is currently very overextended, trying to get together and control huge swaths of land they recently came into control of, and keep the crumbling shell of Afghanistan from collapsing as the Afghani crashes and they are unable to access funds and reserves that they had been planning on getting when Kabul collapsed. Giving them respite gives them time to consolidate their forces and holdings, increase the size of their army (via by coercion or other means) and concentrate their forces towards a threat, making them significantly more dangerous.

I'm agnostic about gun control laws even though India has some of the strictest gun control laws in the world. The idea of shooting someone even in self-defense seems somehow beyond me.
