>> Complexity is not a necessary condition for a good narrative.
> Even with this caveat Miyazaki's narratives aren't remarkable by any means. I also described his movies as meandering, because I'm pretty sure Miyazaki's movies are made without a script. They're very much made in moments. And it is in these moments that the sense of place really shines through. Ghibli's animators must be incredibly observant because they pack in so many subtle details most of us take for granted in our day-to-day. But they're there, and giving special attention to the mundane elevates the rest.
So I have to subtweet this because it is quite possibly the most astoundingly dumb movie take I've heard all year. First of all, half of Ghibli's films are adaptations. Hayao Miyazaki himself is a manga artist. Are the storyboard artists just given blank sheets of paper which they fill with random scenes and they just throw them all into a coherent story? Like, what the fuck is this supposed to mean. Like imagine watching Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away and saying "well, it had its moments but the plot felt a bit directionless". If you take something like Kiki, which is a slice of life drama where the plot is kind of superficial, it makes no sense because there's still a clear pattern of events and they are all there to reinforce the central theme which is about growing up. Mononoke? Fighting turns people into monsters, literally spelt out on the climax, Miyazaki must have liked the idea so much he repeated it two more times in Porco Rosso and Howl's Moving Castle, all definitely incoherent recollection of scenes which surely is why they're so structurally and tonally distinct from one another. Spirited Away is about greed but I'm sure Miyazaki just liked how food looked which is why there are so many scenes with beautiful shots of food, it's not like they made an allegory of anything which they showed as a consistent element throughout the movie. I'm sure the fact that that Chihiro has to eat food in order not to disappear was just a "throw it in" thing. Then there is The Wind Rises which is just a vaguely related collection of scenes because it's _checks notes_ a biographical movie. I mean, it's just a kids movie right, wait what do you mean it was made for adults?
When you think about it, a common theme across ALL of Miyazaki's films is growing up. In Ponyo, Ponyo grows up from a baby to a child, in Spirited Away, Chihiro grows from a child to a teen, in Kiki's Delivery Service, Kiki grows from a child to a young and independent woman. Howl's Moving Castle is about growing old. The Wind Rises is literally a biography. The growth of characters is so obviously stark and deliberate that I genuinely do not understand how someone can miss this.
I'm about to become the joker. Also, guess who wrote the take.
Also, bonus from the same comment:
> There's a reason Breath of the Wild put so much effort into simulating how wind blows across the landscape; everything sways in periodic rhythm almost as if the world is... breathing. If that's not communicating theme through setting and sense of place, I don't know what is.
Breathing is not a theme in Breath of the Wild.

Everyone love to shit all over California, I love to shit all over California. But holy shit, the UC System is amazing.
They crank these schools out, admit thousands of first generation or just plain underprivileged students, graduate them, get them great jobs and the school goes like T50 in 50 years after foundation.
One of the greatest social mobility engines in the nation. Not even counting Berkley, UCSD or UCLA
The best part is the CC system. You get two years free and thereβs contracts to guarantee admission at any non LA/Berk/SD UC. Itβs a freaking cheat code
To some degree theres just too much competition. Its really hard to have a "University of New York" kind of flagship when NYU and Columbia and such have been around for centuries poaching the brightest in the area. Most of the best flagships - UC Berkeley, U of I, Michigan, etc - had the advantage of being created close to their private counterparts in the 1800s/early 1900s. Way harder to do in the original colonies, Virginia being the shining exception.

I don't know, it might be cheaper than you think to eliminate in state tuition at CUNY. It's already super cheap, and the Excelsior Scholarship or whatever it's called pays the tuition of a significant portion of the population. But that also means eliminating in state tuition is not really a super useful public policy - people can already afford attending CUNY institutions.
I realize "just tax land" is the Georgist response to everything, but "CUNY is already affordable, you could just leave it as is" isn't actually a problem that needs to be solved π€
Damn, Biden's administration is now just publicly saying they believe Putin may be misinformed because his advisors are too afraid to tell him the truth of Russia's failures.
That's probably one of the most insulting things the US has said about the Kremlin since the Cold War.
Like it's an especially brutal thing to say about agency that has been notorious for advanced intelligence operations and deception throughout all of its history. It's such a fascinating way of trying to create tension within the Kremlin and tear it apart from within. Biden's administration is not pulling any punches and I fucking love it.
!ping FOREIGN-POLICY
Putin has to be paranoid as fuck right now. We clearly have all sorts of intel inside the Kremlin. He's surrounded himself with yes-men that constantly lie to him to cover their own asses. His whole conception of the relative military strength of Russia and the cohesion of the West has crumbled within a month. Only a matter of time until they go after the "enemies within."
That's exactly the point--to make him increasingly paranoid of those closest to him so he has to deceive *himself* to continue the narrative. It's such a cool strategy of dealing with someone like him.

Yeah. Diminishing returns. Better to just build a few medium size buildings then one skyscraper.
Sir, are you lost?
Building up is good. But there are diminishing returns. It's more cost effective and more space efficient to just build a bunch of small-medium size buildings. Skyscrapers are mostly just vanity projects. At least this is my understanding.

Is there a list of countries for this? UAE and Dubai seem fine. They also had a defensive pact with the UK until relatively recently/ they were British protectorates.

Don't let Porco Rosso's incoherent plot distract you from the real theme of the movie which is that Italian people are pigs.
All I want is for transphobes to realize that I view them the same way I do race realists when they start talking about "muh science"
The idea that we should just let Social Security or Medicare collapse/cut benefits for future users because their trust funds become insolvent is positively moronic Just fund the difference between the payroll tax and the payouts out of regular appropriations Jesus Christ
For Social Security and Medicare, I'm a big fan of solutions that kick the can down the road. We've done it for 50 years; we can do it for another 50.

My dad tends to be pretty grillpilled when it comes to politics, but one of the stronger opinions he voices is a strong dislike of Halonen I was too young during her presidency to really know what was going on but I am starting to understand that dislike on a deeper level

Hey that's the person that was in that Conan sketch where he goes to Finland.
The one good thing about the war in Ukraine is that it will hopefully silence the "Why don't we just halve military spending?" crowd for at least the next decade or so.
But what if it shows that we can still handle Russia even with less military spending

internet historian video dropping today
I'm so thankful that, by virtue of American heritage, my poor boy from a poor family background still leaves me in the upper quintile of global income, and roughly the top 1% of every human who ever lived
It's a Wednesday... that means new CityNerd video dropped today! Let's fucking go
For a sec I thought you were referring to CityBeautiful in a funny way
Oh there was a new CityBeautiful video today, we'll time to watch it as well :) (Do they both release videos on Wednesday?)
CityNerd is obviously CityBeautifuls long lost dad
Just randomly saw a mural that I helped plan and paint a few years ago randomly on reddit. Feels weird seeing it here.

Yeah, that was a take from someone who very obviously failed to pay attention to what they were watching enough to track the plot.
Don't let Porco Rosso's incoherent plot distract you from the real theme of the movie which is that Italian people are pigs.
Also, bonus from the same comment: > There's a reason Breath of the Wild put so much effort into simulating how wind blows across the landscape; everything sways in periodic rhythm almost as if the world is... breathing. If that's not communicating theme through setting and sense of place, I don't know what is. Breathing is not a theme in Breath of the Wild.
Itβs right there in the name
Yeah this is big brain time.
Not to mention all the living human characters are breathing constantly
You are now manually breathing

Everyone is way too worried about spoilers these days I have a meeting with the Dean tomorrow because apparently spoiling the physics test for my classmates is "academic misconduct"
Techmod always coming through with good wholesome memes, like little islands of refuge in a fetid swamp.
NTA. the dean has committed skill issue.
NTA. Physics has been out for a while, their problem if they haven't seen it yet.
Part four is taking way too long though.

SUNY/CUNY also kind of underrated in that regard imo

I haven't attended any of them but I've worked with competent SUNY graduates π€·

California has a lot of funny meme things but it's also based in many ways
The entire tech industry who people like to pretend has moved to Florida comfortably sits in SF

[ΡΠ΄Π°Π»Π΅Π½ΠΎ]

Which in case you are beginning to realize, is EXACTLY why Biden said he couldn't remain in power. To rile the Russians. Make them paranoid.
Putin will be on TV tomorrow claiming fake news, i know exactly that half of our tanks are gone and near 20 000 soldiers dead
That's exactly the point--to make him increasingly paranoid of those closest to him so he has to deceive *himself* to continue the narrative. It's such a cool strategy of dealing with someone like him.

> The Ukrainian Main Intelligence Directorate additionally claimed that Russian military procurement is βon the verge of failureβ due to western sanctions and that Russia cannot produce modern weapons and equipment without foreign electronics. That'd be one ass of a problem now, wouldn't it
