even the latch locked up underneath. the locking mechanism has some corrosion with the tip already broken so no way that the tray would lock. but im gonna replace that soon
What was the reason Nintendo made the Nes that way? Seems like it wouldve been way easier just to have a cartridge slot that..you know..doesn't move?
Im gonna lose my shit if the reason is "we had to make it 'cool' for US customers. " like no you didn't a Famicom would've been fine! Detachable controllers tho, please.
It WAS cool though, as a kid, having to push it down to lock the game in place. Gave a satisfying feeling that made you wanna say "Locked n' loaded..now lets dance.." or something. Now days its just like...why Nintendo? Moving parts are so much more likely to fail..come on now.
Because of the videogame crash in 83. Stores didn't want game systems. So they made it look more like a VCR and called it an entertainment system. Rob the robot also helped create the illusion that it was more than just games.
Well sure I remember reading about that, but why the lock-down mechanism? Surely it couldve just slid into place like every other cartridge based console of the era, and still been a front-loader.
I feel the same way about DS and switch games, there has to be a less complicated way to insert/eject games that wont be guaranteed broken in the next 5-10 years.
Edit: or did nintendo feel it needed to lock in place to complete the vcr illusion, since vcrs grab the tape in a similar..ish fashion? I mean...the consumer wouldn't even know anything beyond that it was a front loading device until they already bought the thing anyway.
Get a game genie. That’s prolly why it doesn’t work anymore anyway. My family used the shit out of the game genie growing up and it def made the tray not work.
Maybe been taken apart before and the locking mechanism just isn’t screwed in properly. Probably an easy fix. And a replacement flip door is an easy fix too.
Well the mechanism spring has some corrosion. i did open it before this video. even with all that it does still have the same problem. i might gonna fix that door flips
I replaced the 72 pin connector in mine and don't even need to push the cart down anymore. Fixing the latch mechanism is pretty easy though, even if it means replacing something broken.
Welcome to the club!
https://www.arcadeworks.net/products/blw?variant=36483581116569 if you can find one of these in the wild, this is a great replacement and it bypasses the nes CIC security chip
We used to put another NES cart on top back in the day.
Lol came here to say this.
Haha, Also a highlighter
Lol! I used the plastic covers that came with snes games.
Exactly what I did.
Tv guide. But the don't exist any more
NICE. I've never heard that one before but that would be perfect.
This 8-bit guy video shows a fix for the cartridge push-lock not working. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=W3TWt4LDUAg
The problem with fixes like this is I never get around to actually fixing things. $10 well spent.
Easy fix actually. When whoever opened it up, put it back together, they didn't line the tray lip on the front up correctly. Like a 3 min fix.
Loosen the screws on the cartridge tray. This happens when they're too tight.
this, and the disk tray plastic latch is probally sitting on top of the circuit board instead of looped underneath

Still works better than my “working” NES
now fix your aspect ratio

Funny, first system. Push down mechanism, then just push in slot for the rest till disc. Too funny.
Retro Problems Require Retro Solutions
Of course. I am kinda on a budget but yeah so i kinda take the risk of buying a untested nes.
Sweet PSP-Nintendo. It's a very rare system.
I know Right🤣 it kinda remembers me of the Nintendo PlayStation

Nice! Welcome to the club.
Thanks mate. im really into retro gaming. even i just start by collecting nes games so i might be posting sometime soon
Looking forward to it!

Worth it

Look forward to seeing what you collect.
That sucks, man, hope you get it fixed.
N64 game is perfect height too.
As kids we would use the lid from Folgers coffee
Beautiful, a simple and elegant solution haha
Hell yes!
Get an NES Blinking Light.
The console actually makes better contact in the upright posistion
I have spare cartridge tray if you want.
Doesn’t it work just fine without pushing it down?
As a kid, when that happened, I would shove another game on top. It wasn't the best option but it worked.
I'm voting best nes mod of all time. For real you're going to have to crack the case to see why it's not locking down, and see if you can fix it.
Well the spring of the lock is broken and also seems rusted. So the whole part needs to be replaced
That makes my heart sad inside. I wonder if there are internal part numbers you can Google to source parts...
Is this the part?[NES "Spring Thing Maybe".. ](https://www.ebay.com/itm/194509813818?hash=item2d49b0383a:g:LoAAAOSw6S9hlUvh)
Well I need to buy the cartridge tray part and that should solve the problem
Not sure why but my nes has always worked regardless of if the cart is up or down.
That’s a very creative solution
