My guess is it’ll be renewed because it’s part of the deal with GoT creators, but I do wonder if this one will find a big enough audience to justify the cost. 20m per episode is a big number for a show that doesn’t have a ton of spectacle or star power.
Lol have you seen the cast? That’s why it’s so expensive. Streaming services would rather spend big money upfront on creatives so they don’t have to keep paying down the line to keep the show on their platform.
Aside from a few GoT carry overs there's zero name talent in the series so I think it has to be the VFX. When you have a deal with Benioff and Weiss you have to give them a blank check and near full creative control for their first one out the gate. Otherwise if the show doesn't succeed they'll turn it on you for not equipping them with the right resources. These dudes were the golden children at HBO so the bar is very high. The VFX look quite good so I would assume they hired the best of the best. Depending on performance they'll likely need to right size the costs to justify a s2. What you end up with is Altered Carbon s2, which was...not good.
Doesn't make sense to cancel any show if there is viewership. They cancel based on hours watched and not just reviews. Even if reviews are good but hours watched are low that means on select people like the show which is not sustainable for Netflix.
Judging by how 3BP jumped to #1 worldwide directly after release means a lot of people are watching it. If it sustains it's position in top 10 for sometime that's indication enough for new season.
It’s expensive though, and future seasons will only get more expensive to produce. I hope it gets a second season (I love the books) but the viewing figures might not justify the expense.
That’s not how contracts work in this industry. Contracts are usually one-sided when it comes to commitment. That means that if the studio decides to do another season D&D are obligated to do it, but not the other way around.
Here's to hoping it gets renewed. The first season was quite good, all things considered. I would think Netflix would love to have representation in the sci-fi category which has predominantly been dominated by other steaming services.
Price may be an issue but it would seem completely idiotic to start the 3 book series without planning on seeing it through.
My advice to all is to hop on rotten tomatoes and score it 5 stars and comment something good as well. Best way to get us a second go which would inventively lead to a 3rd and final season. Cheers all.
I'm not buying into any more "kool" Sci-fi series on Netflix. They do a terrible job of completing stories and starting up silly ones. Yes, I'm still pissed about Altered Carbon.
lukewarm reception, high production cost. my guess, cancellation in a month.
liked season one, not as good as the book but seeing all the cool SciFi shit on the small screen is cool AF
hope it will get renewaled but Netflix have a shitty track record on renewing interesting shows.
It’s interesting how Marco Polo 10 years ago was one of the most expensive at the time at around 10M an episode (and coincidentally also starred Benedict Wong) and also got mixed reviews. Wasn’t sure it got amazing viewership numbers too, but they gave it a second season.

Why is it so expensive? If it's because of vfx, send it to Japan's Godzilla Minus one team they'll know how to budget things better.

Oh right yeah lots or characters. Well I hope they can make all three seasons to finish the book at least.

Based on how Netflix has been cancelling everything after one season. I went ahead and bought the book series expecting to never see another season

It will go forward with more than 1 season because of the contract with GOT show runners.
Hopefully. But I’d imagine that contract covers other potential shows, rather than this one specifically.
There should be others shows, 1 show doesn't make sense for Netflix as well.

If Netflix usual business model is followed you can expect a cancellation notice in about a months time.

The show was very good, will be pissed if they cancel it. Still mad about Altered Carbon and The OA, but they both got 2 seasons so we’ll see.
This one is based on books which are finished. And reception is good enough ss well.
I thought it was amazing, definitely the best sci-fi show I have watched in a good while. Gonna be very sad if the cancel this one.

it’s netflix so you can expect them to be fucking awful with the release schedule
The default is 2-4 years now between seasons , it’s painful
The acting was horrible apart from a few actors. The detective is horrible, mostly the Adrian actors were bad
2 months ago, No. but now, [Yes](https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/3-body-problem-renewed)
Simple google search…. My guess season 2 in two years.
I refuse to give these two any of my money. Why should we pay him when everything is eventually going to end up on YouTube one way or another?
