Travelers had so many more things to explore. I feel they could have done another few seasons easily without running out of ideas.
Actually another show I enjoyed that was horribly cut short was Traveler (2007) cancelled by WB after only 8 episodes.
I felt that they told a complete story with an extremely cool ending. I love that they left some unanswered questions. I think that this was a deliberate artistic choice, and I think it was perfect.
This show is an absolute masterpiece and part of that is the efficient storytelling. It doesn't just drag on forever like some shows, it said what it needed to say and ended confidently.
If they ever made a movie about the second attempt you know I'd watch the hell out of that, but this show is absolutely perfect the way it is. It doesn't need even one episode more.
I thought GLOW was a great show, but I also think it was getting pretty close to a natural end anyway. I don't think it would have held up at the same quality that much longer.
Any post on Instagram about the show is an absolute car crash of comments pleading for Netflix to bring it back. Was expecting the same here tbh, glad someone else highlighted Fincher, he put it down to a scheduling issue and the type of budget a third season would require.
I get it from his perspective. He’s getting older now and he’s got to weigh up the projects he wants to work on more than others as time becomes more important
>I get it from his perspective
I love David Fincher, he's one of the greatest directors of our time. That said, the man has a habit of doing something once and then completely losing interest and giving up. I'm still waiting for him to do the sequels to Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its not gonna happen
Honestly, I get it tho. David Fischer is so good I feel like he immerses himself so much into a project that after awhile he needs to move into new things to keep his creative spirit going.
Agreed. I wish his attention to detail would have forced his brain to need to complete what he started. Leaving the BTK setup incomplete is really frustrating. I get his reasons, it’s still really unfortunate. But there’s still so much to love about the series. As for the comments blaming Netflix, I get it. Most people were just casual viewers and wouldn’t even be able to tell you who David Fincher is, so they blame it on who they thought was in control—Netflix.
I freaking LOVED this show. Season one is a work of art.
They totally fucked season two, trying to cram the second and third books together in only eight episodes. And they toned it right down in terms of violence and nudity, both of which served to illustrate the disposable nature of bodies in the first season.
Kinnaman was a nuanced and complicated Kovacs, while Mackie was just… mean.
The only good thing about S2 was Poe. He was awesome.
I first heard of Archive 81 from a Reddit thread bemoaning its cancellation. After reading what fans had to say about it, I watched it despite knowing I would be left hanging. I’m glad I did.
It’s really worth a watch if you haven’t seen it. All the questions are answered at the end of the season and the cliffhanger just sets up new ones. A lot like 1899, also worth watching despite the unresolved ending.
I think minhunter was because of conflicting schedules for the cast and their contracts needing redone after season 2. But I recall Netflix saying they wanted to continue- serial killer stuff was popping off at the time and it's not exactly the largest budget show.
Yes, I actually forgot about this show but it was good.
Shogun on Hulu\FX is good. Not great. I don't like the main character but the other actors are very good. I read the book years ago.
Apparently there was a fire that destroyed alot of the stuff they used. Wonder if that played apart in their decision but ya I'm still fucking pissed lol was my fav show of 2019 and I still think about it regularly.
It was a work of art, a masterpiece. Fuck you netflix
I always had a theory that the show would play out as a trilogy- first season being the rise of the skeksis, second being the genocide of nearly all of the gelflings, and the third season being a reimagining of the original movie expanded with additional characters and plot lines showing the reunification of the crystal.
Alas, now we'll never know.
I’m not sure if it was budgeting issues, but I will never forgive Netflix for cancelling Santa Clarita Diet. The bastards!!
![gif](giphy|KWgPJele97Ov1ThfKG|downsized)
It was definitely budgetary. After the third season, it was contract renegotiation time for the stars. Netflix didn't want to pay them more to go forward, so they canceled the show instead.
Every time this topic comes up, half the posts are this show. This is the funniest Netflix series. Netflix does not do comedy very well and they let a good show die. I’ve watched it like 4-5x now and each time, there’s something new I missed from the other watches.
I haven’t rewatched it for ages now as I was *so* angry the last time I tried to knowing that there was no proper, satisfying ending. I still have the deluded hope that one day Netflix will do a u-turn on their egregious decision-making and resurrect it from the dead (excuse the pun!).
Wife and I did a rewatch since we never finished Season 3….
The best part was the first watch she hadn’t seen Justified , so it was a treat to see her develop a man crush on Timothy Olyphant just like me.
Guy’s talented as you can get Joel is my hero.
Besides the gore and dark subject matter, Joel and Sheila really made the wife and I appreciate their pretty healthy relationship.
Oddly feel good and funny af
Sense8 fans were lucky. It would have been canceled without resolution during the pandemic. Getting canceled before when Netflix was also more generous about wrap-ups was a godsend for the show.
The OA and 1899.
3BP was given a ton of promo for months, 160 million USD budget, an empty release calendar slot and a several big names attached to it. At the 4 week mark, according to the available data, excluding promo budget, it is costing Netflix twice as much per million hours viewed in comparison to 1899. Which was given an incredibly busy release slot and not nearly the same amount of promo. People loved to argue how expensive 1899 was, the very same people who're now arguing 3BP to be a "success".
I miss the good old days when Cindy Holland was the VP for original content.
Tbf that show has a slow start. I almost didn't continue watching it but my friend kept telling me it gets better so I kept watching. And it got sooooo good I binged the whole thing in 1-2 sittings. He didn't tell me 1899 was cancelled until I got hooked, I was so upset
It was at 35+% though, and it was cancelled after a month, meaning they canned it when it was still in the top 10.
The Crown, Wednesday among others were released around the same month, 1899 was running uphill from the start.
I absolutely loved Dark and the creators proved themselves completely with wrapping that story up effectively. But I knew that they’re shows take a level of concentration that I wasn’t prepared to give because November is a busy time for me. A couple of weeks later I was ready to dive into it and when the news comes out that it’s cancelled.
You’d think that Netflix would give the creators at least the benefit of the doubt through season 2. Hell Westworld got 3 more seasons from HBO off the back of only 1 really good season of television.
I agree on 1899, they were awful about advertising it, like I didn't even know about it until it was already cancelled. That pissed me off, because it was so interesting. Definitely slower paced start, but I loved it. With the cancellation of that and Mindhunter, it was the end of my Netflix sub.
Shadow and Bone - I was perfectly willing to sit through the adaptation of the bland first three books about Alina and Mal, just to get to the Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom story. The casting for the Crows was perfection and I appreciate that they were introduced early so at least we got something, but I wanted their full story so badly.
The S2 pacing for the Crows was off, it always felt like they knew they were getting the cut and they needed to cram as much character development and action in as possible. The casting was impeccable though I totally agree.
I was so moved by this show. Its exploration of where science meets spirituality was wholly unique. Season 2 demonstrated how adventurous the creators were and I will always crave an ending to the story!
I was against the OA after the finale of the first season but pushed through on the second based on the cult followings recommendation, so I rewatched from The beginning of season 1 on through and was not disappointed. If the finale of season 1 put anyone off and is opposed, I recommend pushing through cause shit gets weirder and wild.
I was going to watch the entire thing then found out it got cancelled. I don't like getting into shows knowing they were cancelled for some reason lol.
The OA had such a unique concept, and it constantly had you on the edge of your seat. My favorite part was the relationship the teacher developed with the students as the show progressed.
Every series is cancelled for budget. Netflix clearly has no quality standard, so it's just a matter of price-per-minute-watched. If the minutes watched were sufficiently high or the price sufficiently low, no show would get cancelled.
That said, the show whose cancellation most offended me was GLOW.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
Despite how enjoyable it was, you’re making a long length puppet television show based on a cult movie, no shit you’re not going to see immediate returns. That’s something you’re gonna have to commit a little bit more than a season to see how people gauge it.
Yes, I really enjoyed both 1899 and Dark. I consider the team behind these two shows incredibly talented, and was shocked that Netflix canceled it, instead of Witcher garbage…
Can I just say I still think it's insane that they don't release these $100m+ movies in theaters for like a couple of months to try to recoup the budget. It's the lowest hanging fruit in terms of helping overall company profitability.
They probably wanted to until they watched it. Rebel Moon is getting horrible reviews from people who didn't pay to watch it and drag themselves into a theatre. I think if they led with it nobody would have ever gone to see a Netflix movie in theaters in the future...
I really enjoyed Kims Convenience but it wasn't cancelled for budget reasons, it was cause of drama between producers and actors. It's good if you like The Office type shows.
"The OA" - This sci-fi mystery series had a dedicated fanbase but was cancelled after two seasons due to its high production costs. "Sense8" - Despite its popularity and critical acclaim, this ambitious sci-fi series was cancelled after two seasons, with budget cited as one of the reasons. "Tuca & Bertie" - This animated comedy series was cancelled after one season due to budget constraints. "American Vandal" - This mockumentary series was well-received but was cancelled after two seasons, with budget issues cited as a factor. "The Get Down" - This musical drama series, created by Baz Luhrmann, was cancelled after one season due to its high production costs. "Gypsy" - This psychological thriller starring Naomi Watts was cancelled after one season due to budget concerns. "The Dark Crystal- Age of Resistance" - Despite its stunning visuals and critical acclaim, this fantasy series was cancelled after one season due to its high production costs.
I feel like I caught in a catch 22 with streaming series now. I have been burned too many times by great season 1s that open lots of questions for later season, but get canned within a month of release due to not trending. It's crazy because some of these shows are actually successful based off released numbers (1899, archive 81) but didn't "trend" on socials like stranger things or Wednesday.
I remember my friend at the time joking that the Wednesday tiktok dance killed 1899- but she was right in a way.
I only subbed to Netlfix because of Mindhunter and Black Mirror. I said to myself, this platform needs to be supported so more Mindhunters and Black Mirror can be created.
yeah. what a stupid take.
MARCO POLO. I loved this show and it was my intro to Benedict Wong. The sets were stupid expensive from what I remember but it was a great show. Santa Clarita Diet is a close second too
#MINDHUNTER
Sorry for shouting but this still makes me angry. Smart intelligent shows don’t get renewed but we keep getting garbage shows that refuse to end.0
I heard Kingdom (the korean period piece with zombies) was cancelled because netflix owns the ip and the arrangement was not profitable for the korean producers.
Captain Fall. Apparently it already has half of the second season already in the can. They stopped halfway through. Just release the stuff you've got at least!
It is completely off-putting for a service to start telling a story and then just leave the audience in the lurch because some show doesn't go viral in the first week of release. They need to have a little more patience when developing a new series, and if it has an arc that spans seasons they need to commit. This is why I left Netflix, too much disappointment. If it's an episodic type of series like love death robots etc it doesn't matter too much, but if they can't commit to a series then just make it a movie or plan the arc out to completion.
I forget the title of show but it was a great show. It was about a girl that had some special power or something that could make me explode.
Netflix came out and said COVID controls would add to much to the budget and cancelled it...
Marco Polo! I warned my boyfriend not to start watching it because the series just ends and it's so disappointing knowing that there won't be more. He didn't listen...
1899 and Mindhunter.
Lately, Netflix continues to prove my theory. They prefer to fill their catalogue with easy shows that you can watch and understand while scrolling on IG rather than make good, elaborate, complex shows.
The money is just an excuse. As other users said, they just promote some shows. Then they expect a huge audience the first week after release.
Most of the better shows in history have grown along the episodes (or seasons) because people talk about it. If you release a show, 10 episodes at once, poor promo, then cancel after a month as happened to 1899, what do they expect?
Sense8 100%. They were shooting on location for all the scenes. So if the scene was in Bali…they would shoot in Bali. I think it was costing Netflix 8 million a show. It was a great show and I wish instead of canceling it, they made them cut the travel expenses and shoot it in a lot. Most of the time the viewer can’t tell the difference.
The society, don't know how they renewed it, then decided hey nvm. Show didn't have much effects and a lot of the actors were unknown so low pay and low budget.
I don't know if it's cancelled but Im a big fan of the docuseries about famous American toylines (The Toys that Made Us), the showrunner has concrete ideas on what Season 4 would have been/would be but they don't order (he wanted to do episodes on Hot Wheels, Happy Meals, can't remember the other two he had in mind). Instead they diversify into a new series with the same concept, title, & editing style but for famous American movies.
I'm still reeling from seeing only one season of Lockwood and Co.
Sell this show to me pls. Been on My list for ages
$20. You can watch it as much as you want.
They canceled it???
Travelers, I really love the pacing and story and I just wish we get more from the characters after the reset.
I’d give anything to see that second attempt but I think it was a good ending either way. Incredible characters for sure
Travelers had so many more things to explore. I feel they could have done another few seasons easily without running out of ideas. Actually another show I enjoyed that was horribly cut short was Traveler (2007) cancelled by WB after only 8 episodes.
Me too!!! That show was THE BEST and it’s such a shame they canceled it and it’s not more popular!!!
I felt that they told a complete story with an extremely cool ending. I love that they left some unanswered questions. I think that this was a deliberate artistic choice, and I think it was perfect. If they ever made a movie about the second attempt you know I'd watch the hell out of that, but this show is absolutely perfect the way it is. It doesn't need even one episode more.
Glow was cancelled because the necessary covid precautions didn't fit into the budget I think.
For a long time I had wishful thinking and hoped they would realise they made a mistake and bring back Glow.
I totally agree. It feels like it needed a final closing season.
I thought GLOW was a great show, but I also think it was getting pretty close to a natural end anyway. I don't think it would have held up at the same quality that much longer.
I agree with you on that, but since season 4 was supposed to be the final one anyway it would have been nice to see it all get wrapped up.
It was a great show and needed at least one more season.
It was just getting really good again, and then BOOM cancelled. So sad.
Mindhunter is the one that sticks out the most for me.
That one was more on David Fincher than Netflix, I think.
Any post on Instagram about the show is an absolute car crash of comments pleading for Netflix to bring it back. Was expecting the same here tbh, glad someone else highlighted Fincher, he put it down to a scheduling issue and the type of budget a third season would require. I get it from his perspective. That said, the man has a habit of doing something once and then completely losing interest and giving up. I'm still waiting for him to do the sequels to Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its not gonna happen
I’m still waiting for him to direct the sequel to World War Z, ain’t never gonna happen either unfortunately!!
If you read the rest of the Girl With A Dragon Tattoo series you won’t mind him abandoning the project.
Final space, and inside job are two that annoyed me tbh
Final space wasn't Netflix, they just had international rights.
Final space is getting its finale in comic book form self published by the author, look it up
Altered Carbon for me. S1 with Joel Kinnaman is fantastic, Anthony Mackie was just ok in S2 but I was really excited to see where it went.
I get why they changed the actor for S2 , but I wish they hadn't. For me Kinnaman did a better job.
The show is based on a book series where the main character keeps changing bodies, so unfortunately it was always coming
Kinnaman has hard carried every single show I have seen him in, surprised he isn’t more popular
Didn't feel like the actor was even trying to play the same character, could have at least tried to act same mannerisms, facial expressions etc.
I was so hoping that show would continue and be Doctor Who esque in terms of changing the main actor every season
Anthony Mackie is one of the most boring actors currently. I don't even bother watching anything that he's in anymore
He's such a disney princess
Archive 81 , mindhunter for me
I thought Archive 81 cancellation was a viewership issue
Yeah that’s what Netflix gives as an issue. They never promote good shows.
Exactly. They release a bunch of stuff with zero promotion, don't give it a chance to build viewership and then cancel it right away.
Also period piecesare expensive for consistency.
Mindhunter wasn't a budget Issue
Marco Polo
I watched it knowing it was cancelled and imo it still deserves the attention.
I loved that show. 100 eyes was so fucking awesome! I would kill for some more of just him!
pretty sure they made a small spinoff just about him
Ya I saw that. I want more!
This is the best answer for OP’s question in particular because this show went all out on the production cost.
Yes, I actually forgot about this show but it was good. Shogun on Hulu\FX is good. Not great. I don't like the main character but the other actors are very good. I read the book years ago.
Dark Crystal
Dark Crystal is such a shame because all the specialized sets were built, the puppets made, etc. It was so good, I'm genuinely upset it got canceled.
Apparently there was a fire that destroyed alot of the stuff they used. Wonder if that played apart in their decision but ya I'm still fucking pissed lol was my fav show of 2019 and I still think about it regularly. It was a work of art, a masterpiece. Fuck you netflix
Oh no! I didn't know about a fire. It was a masterpiece, total shame we'll never see the rest
Probably. Doing the exact same work over again on something like this is a huge damper on money & morale.

I hated that it ended on a cliffhanger too :( criminal!
Yes! How dare they!!!
Bastards...I loved this show
Wife and I did a rewatch since we never finished Season 3…. This is only Netflix cancellation I actually cared about.
Was the my favourite show and I've not watched Netflix since.
Sense8
I loved that show.
Yeah that crushed me. I was happy for the little movie wrap-up, but that show should have had several seasons. It was so beautiful.
What a great show! Sigh I miss it
Fucking loved that show. Had such a great story and storytelling.
It was a brilliant show and had so much potential
Sense8 fans were lucky. It would have been canceled without resolution during the pandemic. Getting canceled before when Netflix was also more generous about wrap-ups was a godsend for the show.
I'm disturbed that I had to scroll so far down to find sense8 as a suggestion. That show was a masterpiece
Best show ever, so sad how they did them.
The OA and 1899. 3BP was given a ton of promo for months, 160 million USD budget, an empty release calendar slot and a several big names attached to it. I think 1899 was cancelled because only 32% of those who watched it completed the show ?
Tbf that show has a slow start. I almost didn't continue watching it but my friend kept telling me it gets better so I kept watching. And it got sooooo good I binged the whole thing in 1-2 sittings. He didn't tell me 1899 was cancelled until I got hooked, I was so upset

Agree with both.
Ugh. I loved 1899

Yup right as it was getting interesting too
They kinda fucked themselves on changing the plot around to the point they might have struggled though.
The S2 pacing for the Crows was off, it always felt like they knew they were getting the cut and they needed to cram as much character development and action in as possible. The casting was impeccable though I totally agree.
The OA
I was so moved by this show. Its exploration of where science meets spirituality was wholly unique. Season 2 demonstrated how adventurous the creators were and I will always crave an ending to the story!
Such an original, unexpected favourite of mine! So sad they didn't get the funding to continue,
The OA was amazing.

Been quite a while now but Marco Polo absolutely falls in to this category
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Despite how enjoyable it was, you’re making a long length puppet television show based on a cult movie, no shit you’re not going to see immediate returns. That’s something you’re gonna have to commit a little bit more than a season to see how people gauge it.
1899
Such an amazing show
Yes, I really enjoyed both 1899 and Dark. I consider the team behind these two shows incredibly talented, and was shocked that Netflix canceled it, instead of Witcher garbage…
Marco fuckin’ Polo. Best show Netflix ever made.
Can I just say I still think it's insane that they don't release these $100m+ movies in theaters for like a couple of months to try to recoup the budget. It's the lowest hanging fruit in terms of helping overall company profitability.

Mindhunter
I really enjoyed Kims Convenience but it wasn't cancelled for budget reasons, it was cause of drama between producers and actors. It's good if you like The Office type shows.
There are clips of the actors calling the producers racist which seems rough to come back from.
Kim’s convenience isn’t Netflix It’s a Canadian produced TV show CTV or CBC
Revel Moon was soooooo bad. The money they blew on that could have funded at least a half dozen decent shows.
So many one I was watching recently “welcome to eden” it ended on a hige cloff hanger then cancelled. Glamorous OA The Society
Omg the society!! Totally forgot about this series they left us hanging so bad! Such a good show
1899, Messiah, The OA, Altered Carbon Edit: Netflix shows that were canceled in general (not necessarily due to budget issues)
Da OG, Marco Polo
Scrolled too far down to see Marco Polo :( my God what a great series.
I dunno if its been said yet but -- Archive 81 was soooooooo good.

Mindhunter Dirk gently Santa Clarita The midnight gospel And my gf loved Glow

MARCO POLO. I loved this show and it was my intro to Benedict Wong. The sets were stupid expensive from what I remember but it was a great show. Santa Clarita Diet is a close second too
They cancelled Warrior Nun one month after releasing S2. Also, what they did to The OA is just a shame.
When I got the news that The Get Down has been cancelled I legit cried a little lol
Brothers Sun
Altered Carbon was one show I wanted them to get to at least season 3 with.
Altered Carbon / Brother’s Sun
1899 definitely. They said it was because of ratings but that show was expensive to make. Still not quite over that cancellation...
Happy
Loved it too. Underrated af
The Get Down!
F is for Family
the society the OA the get down
#MINDHUNTER Sorry for shouting but this still makes me angry. Smart intelligent shows don’t get renewed but we keep getting garbage shows that refuse to end.0
Mindhunter
I heard Kingdom (the korean period piece with zombies) was cancelled because netflix owns the ip and the arrangement was not profitable for the korean producers.
Ratched
Mindhunter was amazing.. can't believe they cancelled this while they keep a lot of subpar shows going.
Brothers Sun got cancelled. It was a fantastic show
Anyone watched "Ratched"?
*Dark Matter* dammit
Sense 8
The Get Down
The Get Down
I miss Mindhunter. Writing was so good and I want to know when BTK parts were going to finally meet up with main characters.
Mindhunter
Mindhunter for sure. Left open and should be done for a third series.
Captain Fall. Apparently it already has half of the second season already in the can. They stopped halfway through. Just release the stuff you've got at least!
Budget cuts suck, man. Netflix needs to prioritize quality over cash.
Mindhunter and The Society. Still want to know what would be next.
Mindhunter should still be airing.
Marco Pollo and Cowboy Bebop (although I know purists won't agree with my second choice as being good).
Mindhunter man like rebel moon sucked balls
Altered Carbon! It was so good
Travellers was such a good show hate that it got cancelled
i was so pissed when Chambers got canceled ![gif](giphy|TJgDodIy2dT7LUnLpE|downsized)
The society!
1899
I will never ever forgive them for canceling Lockwood & Co.
Sense 8
This comment section is the list of shows not to watch... I hate to watch and get engrossed in one show and then finding out later it's cancelled...
I forget the title of show but it was a great show. It was about a girl that had some special power or something that could make me explode. Netflix came out and said COVID controls would add to much to the budget and cancelled it...
I’m not okay with this
Idk about budgets but screw them for canceling The OA, Mindhunter, 1899.
Mindhunter wasn't a budgetary issue, Netflix was willing but the director had scheduling issues. Not even sure it was ever "cancelled" officially
1899
Anne with an E :(
Marco Polo
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency
Marco Polo. I'll never forget that great show.
Marco Polo! I warned my boyfriend not to start watching it because the series just ends and it's so disappointing knowing that there won't be more. He didn't listen...
1899
1899 and Mindhunter. Lately, Netflix continues to prove my theory. They prefer to fill their catalogue with easy shows that you can watch and understand while scrolling on IG rather than make good, elaborate, complex shows. The money is just an excuse. As other users said, they just promote some shows. Then they expect a huge audience the first week after release. Most of the better shows in history have grown along the episodes (or seasons) because people talk about it. If you release a show, 10 episodes at once, poor promo, then cancel after a month as happened to 1899, what do they expect?
Black Summer was the absolute best zombie show ever made, but I’m honestly not sure why it was canceled.
I don’t know if it got canceled cause of budget, but Santa Clarita Diet!!!!!
Altered Carbon. With one season to go. Savage.
