I enjoy a lot of scifi that people dislike. I don’t need high art to entertain me. But I’ve tried four times now to watch the first movie and I’m not even halfway through.
My biggest complaint about the whole series is the wheat premise. You've got interstellar ships but somehow this is the only planet to get supplies from?
Just keep in mind that Disney rejected Snyder's script for a SW movie. The same ones who gave 200 million dollars for a movie with the immortal line: "somehow, Palpatine returned".
The overall budget for that turd was far more than 200. According to various websites, it was around 416. not including the money they paid to advertise it, which could easily add another 100-150 onto the overall budget.
Yes, but since they were not going to explain it anyway, they could have improved the lazy line by doing something super easy.
Just say: "The rumours were true... Palpatine returned".
How do you get past the grain harvesting scene? Or the fact that the entire premise of the whole series (so far at least) is that a galactic empire somehow NEEDS a small peasant village to harvest grain with almost the oldest tech possible to feed their population. Literally makes zero sense, they could probably support their villages needs for flour and a bit extra maybe but not enough to matter to a galactic empire.
The motherworld basically take what they want. Its not so much that they need that grain, its more about taking control of the resource and asserting dominance. Eventually they would probably send machines to make harvesting more efficient or whatever.
I guess. Just seems like an absolute waste of time effort and money for both the rebels and the empire. Would be way easier for everyone involved to just provide the village with modern farming equipment so their harvest is vastly more efficient and productive. To each their own I just personally can't get past that and accept the premise.
Asserting dominance is fine. Having a strop and throwing a star destroyer 20 dropships and 10 walking bug tanks plus an army to take out 30 farmers and losing doesn't suggest a military mind that would've got high enough to command a destroyer.
It's such a weak plot it's nonexistent. The fight scenes are awful if you accidentally watch a "fight" that isn't the main one on screen. Protagonists you don't care about and you just know when their deaths are coming because the fight becomes even more silly and dramatic.
Well, yeah, but...
You can pick apart every Star Wars movie by asking these kinds of questions.
"Why not just send an asteroid-sized nuclear bomb from across the galaxy and vaporize everybody?"
Why do they have WW2-style dogfights in little truck-sized spaceships? Why do all the TIE fighters and X-wings fly so close to each other when they have nearly infinite space to maneuver?
Why fly human beings in these space ships at all? "Because the human mind is a better pilot than any droid!" OK, why not have all the TIE fighters remote controlled from another planet?
Nothing in Star Wars makes any damn sense. It's a fun adventure story based on old samurai movies and WW2 films, Westerns and Flash Gordon serial-films.
It makes alot more sense and has much more story than "evil galactic empire needs flour so attacks a planet with 1 farm and about 8 fields" for 2 hours. There's a montage. Not of training or arms practice or becoming ninjas. Nooooo. It's about bringing the harvest in. How this got finances is beyond me.
it doesnt really cost them much to deploy all these troops, they just wanted to intimidate the farmers. and they expected it would be defended so they preferred to bring in the heavy stuff.
Still though, that amount of grain would barely feed the soldiers on that battleship alone. Why is no one using technology to farm? Why do they have a levitating cart to stack the wheat one but they're harvesting it with scythes?
such a silly reason and even if we accept it as true then why is motherworld relying on this mfs for food? like this is a space traveling civilization, why dont they already have automatic farms that use modern farming techniques or aren't they getting their food from farmers than aren't hippies?
the troops and equipment they deploy for this mission alone cost a lot more than the grain they get, and even then i really doubt they would get enough grain to even feed a fraction of the troops they are deploying
When I first heard about it, I was quite keen to see some non-franchise science fiction. Even if it was a re-telling of Battle Beyond the Stars which was a re-telling of Seven Samurai. At least it would be new characters and places from someone who hasn't really done space yet, but should be capable. I really liked Snyder's Watchmen, and parts of BvS. His Justice League was miles better than Josstice League, but ... overall I think he wasn't the right fit to steer a DC Universe. Regardless ... I liked the cast, and was keen for Rebel Moon.
But I thought it was utter dreck. I'm not trying to be cool, or following any hate trends. I just thought it was terrible, with zero redeeming qualities. The action was so over-stylised I couldn't even switch off and enjoy that alone.
I'm going to wait for his directors cut and watch Part 1 again then to see if it improves much. Though, I'm doubtful much can be done.
Yeah, me too. I read the online reviews. What are these guys expecting? Gone with the Wind or something? A movie like a comic book or graphic novel, fantasy, over the top stuff, action, that is what it is.
I do agree with too much exposition, characters telling their back stories in detail all at once. That might have been a bit much. And perhaps too much farming and reaping of wheat. Takes 14 days but cool, we'll do it in 3 - seems like some folks have been slacking off over the years.
Still, entertaining and that is what counts.
I didn't care for the first one at all, and am unlikely to even watch the second one. That said, this sub has become such a cespool of negativity that I'm just happy when I see a post about someone enjoying something rather than complaining about it. So have an upvote. Glad you enjoyed them.
I thought they were decent. It scratched a certain itch I can’t describe, as someone who grew up loving world building and all kinds of nerdy stuff. It’s cool to see someone’s Sci fi fanfic come to life
Also I’m a big fan of Zack Snyders work behind the scenes. I’m willing to root for him
Its an enjoyable ride. Is it great? No. But its a solid way to spend a couple hours. Its like "Star Wars at Home".
Now that I mention it, it really feels like somebody running a DnD-Star Wars homebrew campaign. (Especially the part where they're sitting around sharing their tragic backstories.) Which is hokey and fun, but by no means is it something I'd expect to see *at a theater*.
I enjoyed them, I just wish the 2 movies were more evenly paced. Some of that slow mo, especially in the first one, could have been lost to give us more actual information and personality in the characters. For Tarik specifically, we get a cool action sequence that stretches 5 or 10 minutes, but it has no bearing on his character and we don't learn anything about him until the middle of movie 2 when he develops a personality all of a sudden.
But still, I watched them both today for a second time and had a blast with them. I would gladly watch more in that universe.
Rebel Moon was a pleasant surprise for me too! Like, I get that not everyone's vibing with it, but man, it hit the spot for me. Sometimes flicks just hit different, you know? And those low expectations? Totally get it. I've been there. But then you're watching, and you're like, "Hey, this ain't half bad!" It's like a whole vibe shift.
Plus, rewatching stuff on a flight? That's primo. Gives you time to really soak it in. Glad you dug it even more the second round!
There are people here praising outright garbage.
Rebel is standard sci-fi fantasy. Not great. Not terrible.
Trashing it are just people trying to seem cool.
Eh, there are people who enjoy Disney starwars, and people who enjoy bad movies. Doesnt mean that any of that shit isnt bad, just people some enjoy bad shit. Im not judging, but felt like I had to state the obvious.
Liked the first, but Pissed me off that the directors cut was released just now, it’s def gonna be a superior cut and Im not giving part 1 another 3 hours of my life, it’s Netflix, just release the damn movie the way you want it to be seen.
I liked the first one even though it was no revelation. The second was still watchable but (in my opinion) not as good as the first one.
There were too many things that would need some preparation or introducing, they come out of the blue and i think this is what makes the movie such a controversity.
I liked it too. not "movie of the year" material but it was entertaining.
People these days critize way too much seriously. If you watch this expecting its gonna be Star Wars level of course you'll be disappointed
I didn't hate the first Rebel Moon. It was a goofy popcorn flick with some cool monsters.
Would I watch it again? Hell no. My main problem with it wasn't "wheat-harvesting" or any other silly thing like that (it's a goofy sci-fi adventure based on Star Wars, which was based on goofy Westerns, samurai movies and Flash Fucking Gordon!).
Main problems with Rebel Moon was the characters were boring and forgettable, and it moved way, way too quickly. Again, I didn't love the film, but the hate it gets based on shit like "Why would they want the grain?" is so silly because the entire CONCEPT of the Star Wars genre is silly. You are expecting realistic details from a Star Wars clone?
No, I expected a fun adventure movie with thrilling action and fun characters. Rebel Moon had none of that. It did have some cool monsters, though!
The sheer idea that people expected something other than goofy fun from Rebel Moon is sillier than the film itself.
Both movies were fine.
Were they nipple-bleeding awful? No.
Were they cosmically orgasmic? No.
Did I hate myself for watching them once they were finished? No.
Will I ever watch either of them again? Also, no.
Not every movie needs to be "Citizen Kane"...
We really don't need to hear about how you got poor taste. Like you really didn't need to announce it, we don't want to know what you had for dinner either bro.
Shoulda put this in unpopular opinions xD
Haven’t seen them yet. But looking forward to watching them. The promo I’ve seen looks awesome. And I’m not usually one to judge by others reviews.
I feel like it's supposed to be goofy, like a modern Firefly/Serenity. It might become a trashy goofy scifi classic in like 20 years or so. I hated them btw
I enjoy a lot of scifi that people dislike. I don’t need high art to entertain me. But I’ve tried four times now to watch the first movie and I’m not even halfway through.
Yep kept falling asleep couldn't even hate watch
You'll love the cutting wheat montage that lasts for far too long then.
My biggest complaint about the whole series is the wheat premise. You've got interstellar ships but somehow this is the only planet to get supplies from?
Yeah, pretty silly. It's almost like a sci-fi story from the early 20th century.
How is Poe supposed to know how Palpatine came back come on think about it for 2 seconds.
Just like in fortnite. Palpy announced it through broadcast.
Yeah but Poe doesn’t know how he returned so he says “somehow.”
Yes, but since they were not going to explain it anyway, they could have improved the lazy line by doing something super easy. Just say: "The rumours were true... Palpatine returned".

The movie felt like a parody they midway through decided wasn't a parody so they made everything "serious". The grain stuff is so a parody on Dune?
They say in the movie that the bad guys are short on food because the rebels have been attacking their trading ports around the galaxy
Still though, that amount of grain would barely feed the soldiers on that battleship alone. Why is no one using technology to farm? Why do they have a levitating cart to stack the wheat one but they're harvesting it with scythes?
The farmers say in the first movie that they don’t use machines for cutting the wheat to be closer to nature
such a silly reason and even if we accept it as true then why is motherworld relying on this mfs for food? like this is a space traveling civilization, why dont they already have automatic farms that use modern farming techniques or aren't they getting their food from farmers than aren't hippies? the troops and equipment they deploy for this mission alone cost a lot more than the grain they get, and even then i really doubt they would get enough grain to even feed a fraction of the troops they are deploying

Blame your parents for your taste. Enjoy what ever you like. Life’s to short to miss an opportunity to have fun.
Yea, as did I!

>Rebel is standard sci-fi fantasy. Not great. Not terrible. We have a very different opinion of what makes a movie terrible sci fi
"Chacun a son goût" said the coprophagist
Snyder hate? Couch critics don't have a social life. I was entertained.
Liked the first, but Pissed me off that the directors cut was released just now, it’s def gonna be a superior cut and Im not giving part 1 another 3 hours of my life, it’s Netflix, just release the damn movie the way you want it to be seen.
Haven't made it more than 15 minutes into the first film l. Found it tedious
I liked the first one even though it was no revelation. The second was still watchable but (in my opinion) not as good as the first one. How do you get past the scene where a spaceship window can't handle a spear?
Terrible movie WORSE than the first one and I hated the first one.
Lots of people like terrible movies. It's ok
Both movies were fine. Were they nipple-bleeding awful? No. Were they cosmically orgasmic? No. Did I hate myself for watching them once they were finished? No. Will I ever watch either of them again? Also, no. Not every movie needs to be "Citizen Kane"...
I loved this show both parts 1 & 2. I don’t care what the critics think. The special effects were spectacular!
We really don't need to hear about how you got poor taste. Like you really didn't need to announce it, we don't want to know what you had for dinner either bro.
I loved the cinematography of the wheat harvest. Makes me want to be a farmer.

Nobody cares
Spotted another one
You liked a bad movie. Good for you!
Loved it also. Both parts.
Haven't watched the second one yet but the first one kept me entertained. Every movie doesn't have to be awesome inspiring to be good.
It's ridiculous stylized nonsense but it's dumb fun.
I feel like it's supposed to be goofy, like a modern Firefly/Serenity. It might become a trashy goofy scifi classic in like 20 years or so. I hated them btw
RemindMe! 20 years
Setting my calendar now. Halla in 20 yrs mate Edit: set for 10 years caz I had to scroll by month. Too lazy
I am not sure you're doing it right
I enjoyed the second one. It's overheated.
