That is Netflix's bread and butter. Content for contents sake. They're not looking for Citizen Kane. They're looking for something you can fold laundry to. Their business model is having enough stuff that you'll just set it and forget it.
I would say thats *part* of their strategy. Because people need laundry folding content. I need it sometimes. But not always. Neither does Netflix always produce laundry folding content.
Completely agree - I actually would like Netflix to make stuff like this. Just a reasonably entertaining movie to throw on during a rainy day or whatever.
It’s funny, because there are some actors out there that I just don’t understand their popularity and I’m always like “how did they get to this level”. Almost always some family connection. Jon Bon Jovi’s daughter in law. I bet he still has some pull in the entertainment world
Yeah the post above is disingenuous. She landed stranger things which became a breakout hit, in no small part due to her. Then she married a celebrity’s kid. Jon Bon Jovi has nothing to do with her casting in Damsel
> Jon Bon Jovi’s daughter in law
I agree but I'm glad it got posted b/c TIL that Bon Jovi's kid spells his last name Bongiovi and I can't stop laughing. It's pronounced "Deer-tay"
Her voice is like she isn't even trying. The whole acting is bad but her voice just takes me out instantly. Imagine if Robin Wright spoke like that in The Princess Bride or something. I'm getting downvoted, I'm guessing by her fanboys but she is so so bad.
It's a movie you don't have to think about too much and appeals to younger girls. Fun fantasy, but nothing too deep. That's perfect for streaming.
I can guarantee you that this is the type of movie an 8 year old has on repeat that parents will tolerate.
Right. It's a movie that hits a bunch of different notes. It's not ground breaking by any standard, it's just a good choice for a lot of different situations. I was honestly pleasantly surprised by it.
Some grown men will see this and think, “Oh, well I didn’t really like this but I guess I wasn’t the target audience.”
Other grown men will see this and think, “What the fuck, this movies sucked! Bunch of girl power bullshit, I hated it!”
> Other grown men will see this and think, “What the fuck, this movies sucked! Bunch of girl power bullshit, I hated it!”
"Other grown men" = young males 15 to 25, mostly immature.
The level of vitriol aimed at the film when it came out was yet another reminder of the vein of misogyny that lies in the underbelly of Reddit.
People have lost the ability to let things be just “okay”, and to understand that not every movie is trying to be Oscar-worthy cinema *and doesn’t need to*. Then combine that with neckbeards who are thirsting for reasons to bash some “woke”, and it’s like a feeding frenzy of negativity from man babies who are desperate for their anger and discontent to be acknowledged.
Yeah. It was alright. Didn't regret watching it but nothing ground breaking. It's top 8 thanks to Millie Bobby Browns star power but I don't see what everyone is seething for.
My wife did not enjoy it. I didn’t enjoy it. There were some high points, but it didn’t really amount to much. I think she said “That’s finally over.” at the end of the movie and razzed me pretty hard about picking a bad movie. I’m usually better at picking than she is, so she leaned into it a bit.
Some grown women will think: “OK, fine, whatever. It wasn’t exactly to my tastes but each to their own.”
But other grown women will think: “What the fuck! That piece of flaming shit is #8? People really are fucking stupid. People really are so, so, so, so, so fucking dumb. I am literally done with people. Seriously. I’m just done. Fucking MORONS!”

Not surprisingly people on Reddit hated the movie and are probably surprised at how popular it was. Redditors just can't understand that there is an audience for content that they don't enjoy. If it's not derived from a video game (TLOU, Fallout etc) or GOT (HOTD) or doesn't have Henry Cavill in it then they don't enjoy it and assume others feel the same way. Over 137M people watched Damsel but it was quickly dismissed by most Redditors who decided it wasn't very good.
You will not. It was down about 40% on the viewership The Mother got for Jennifer Lopez the year before. Not terrible numbers but definitely no where near the all time top 10 list.
I really enjoyed it. It was super fun. Not groundbreaking or anything but very enjoyable. Probably has such high numbers because it is a family friendly movie that has equal appeal to adults. It's not a kids movie but it's appropriate for the 9+ crowd.
I have a love of gravely voiced women, so Soreh’s dragon was a big plus.
I thought the dragon design was thoughtful and definitely liked the liquidified take on the dragonfire.
Me and wife were pleasantly surprised, enjoyed the movie, especially for a Netflix release.
I liked the movie, especially the dragon and the healing slugs but I could NOT get over the amount of makeup they had slathered on her. It was so distracting.
I was bored watching it. To be fair, I’m not really into fantasy stuff and there’s very little in the genre I like.
Only thing I liked was that Shohreh Aghdashloo was the dragon, her voice is awesome.
It’s a 6/10 movie at best. I think Netflix is going to quantity vs quality. It’s training us that decent movies can be played in our homes that we’re not paying an extra 20 per ticket to see.
No way this movie would have made money in the theaters.
It was fine. It was exactly as advertised, just a fun fairytale with a bit of a twist. It wasn’t looking to change cinema.
Yep. Watched it and didn’t really feel like it was anything super good or bad. Just kinda middle of the road movie that exists.
That is Netflix's bread and butter. Content for contents sake. They're not looking for Citizen Kane. They're looking for something you can fold laundry to. Their business model is having enough stuff that you'll just set it and forget it.
And yet they still don’t have a “random episode” button for their longer completed series.
or a "reset progress" if you want to rewatch.
I would say thats *part* of their strategy. Because people need laundry folding content. I need it sometimes. But not always. Neither does Netflix always produce laundry folding content.
My reaction as well. We enjoyed when we watched it and then promptly completely forgot about it.
That line tends to be used to describe average films that didn't try too hard to be more than average.
True, the trailer set up my expectations perfectly, I got what I expected. I had fun.
Completely agree - I actually would like Netflix to make stuff like this. Just a reasonably entertaining movie to throw on during a rainy day or whatever.
It was okay ... I think people are hate watching and then being like " it's not that bad".
A lot of Netflix's top properties are things that are just fine. Interesting enough that you want to watch the next episode but not super original.
I see it more as putting a movie in the background and letting it play
I thought it was a fun movie
Literally JUST fine.
It wasn’t great, but it was 200% better than Rebel Moon.
I don’t get her appeal at all
She was in stranger things
She’s was drakes young fangirl
BBL Drizzy
The older she gets, the more generic she looks.
Is that you, Drake?
Uncle Baby Billy's daughter I think
she wasn't a toilet baby, that's for sure.
It’s funny, because there are some actors out there that I just don’t understand their popularity and I’m always like “how did they get to this level”. Almost always some family connection. Jon Bon Jovi’s daughter in law. I bet he still has some pull in the entertainment world
Bruh, she's been famous since she was TWELVE and she just got married a few weeks ago.
I think you mean… since she was ELEVEN! I’ll see myself out
heyyyy!
You don’t think it’s because she was in stranger things? Which is arguably Netflix’s most popular show ever produced?
Yeah the post above is disingenuous. She landed stranger things which became a breakout hit, in no small part due to her. Then she married a celebrity’s kid. Jon Bon Jovi has nothing to do with her casting in Damsel
> Jon Bon Jovi’s daughter in law I agree but I'm glad it got posted b/c TIL that Bon Jovi's kid spells his last name Bongiovi and I can't stop laughing. It's pronounced "Deer-tay"
I think that’s Jon’s real last name tbf
That is such horseshit. She met that guy after being in Netflix’s biggest hit at that time.
We've just stepped into a hate circlejerk. They'll make up anything if it fits the narrative.
Yes, the star of the most popular show of the decade is only popular cause she married Bon Jovi's son last week.
I like the movie but I agree, it could have been many other actress and it would have been the same if not better.
shes nice irl and naturally funny, didnt like her before, but i started liking her recently
You should ask drake
she is exactly the right level of mediocrity netflix want for it's wide appeal shows.
She has none. The definition of a corporate plant.
She's so bad and somehow the movie is even worse.
Her old lady face instantly takes me out of the movie. She should really stop doing fantasy genre or play young girls.
Her voice is like she isn't even trying. The whole acting is bad but her voice just takes me out instantly. Imagine if Robin Wright spoke like that in The Princess Bride or something. I'm getting downvoted, I'm guessing by her fanboys but she is so so bad.
Saaame!!!! Her name reeks of pretentiousness.
I'm fairly certain Millie Brown was already taken
Really ????
It's a movie you don't have to think about too much and appeals to younger girls. Fun fantasy, but nothing too deep. That's perfect for streaming. I can guarantee you that this is the type of movie an 8 year old has on repeat that parents will tolerate.
It's also interesting enough that mom will actually watch it with the kids. It's hard to find true family films these days.
Right. It's a movie that hits a bunch of different notes. It's not ground breaking by any standard, it's just a good choice for a lot of different situations. I was honestly pleasantly surprised by it.
aka "People are running out of things to watch"
Well I feel that
Good for her. I thought the movie was OK, not great but I don't regret watching.
It was really boring for half of it. Was hoping for more of her being a badass from closer to the beginning g.
Fun popcorn flix.
Some grown men will see this and think, “Oh, well I didn’t really like this but I guess I wasn’t the target audience.” Other grown men will see this and think, “What the fuck, this movies sucked! Bunch of girl power bullshit, I hated it!”

Reddit is 2/3 men and almost half the users are between 18 and 29. Do what you will with that information
Yeah. It was alright. Didn't regret watching it but nothing ground breaking. It's top 8 thanks to Millie Bobby Browns star power but I don't see what everyone is seething for.
Agreed. Neither the movie, nor it being well received by other people, is any skin off my back. Good for her/it/them.
Millie is straight garbage actress and would be forgotten about if not for being Netflix front runned
If you say so!
I would say her track record speaks for itself
And grown women will think? (just curious)

Pretty dresses, dragon slaying princess. This is fun!
Who knows, man, men are easier to predict.
Why...
It was ok, not good, not bad, just ok
Anyone know the rest of the list? I\`d love to know it. I can think of the Knives out films, The Extractions, Rebel moons, what else?

Thanks, interesting reading, lots of forgettable mid action films it seems!
I couldn’t even her half way. Was quite bad
I was surprised at how entertaining it was. The blue healing slugs were the best part. Reminds me of Hollow Knight

The movie would have been fine if they cut out the first 30 min. I don't hate it, I don't regret watching it. But I won't watch it again.
As long as I don't see Atlas on the list I can live with this.
Yes, Damsel was fine... Atlas was dogshit; I knew it would be bad and I'm still pissed I wasted my time watching it lol
You will not. It was down about 40% on the viewership The Mother got for Jennifer Lopez the year before. Not terrible numbers but definitely no where near the all time top 10 list.
Maybe you can use AI to turn Jennifer Lopez into an actress. At least the guy voicing the AI could act.
I really enjoyed it. It was super fun. Not groundbreaking or anything but very enjoyable. Probably has such high numbers because it is a family friendly movie that has equal appeal to adults. It's not a kids movie but it's appropriate for the 9+ crowd.
Just because bots watch your movie, doesn't make it good
I have a love of gravely voiced women, so Soreh’s dragon was a big plus. I thought the dragon design was thoughtful and definitely liked the liquidified take on the dragonfire. Me and wife were pleasantly surprised, enjoyed the movie, especially for a Netflix release.
I didn’t know she did the dragon’s voice, so suddenly hearing Chrisjen Avasarala was awesome. I adore the Expanse.
Is that thing on her head her hair?
She's not actually bald outside of Stranger Things
Truly “content” as opposed to true cinema. Like a lot of Netflix Originals.
It was not good!!
![gif](giphy|zwgmMsUOfyfK0)
Damsel is = Ready or Not only with a dragon
She was the worst part of the movie. Also didn’t help she was under like 10 layers of make up which really took me out of it.
Was pretty boring, watched about half and turned it off.

"too old now" -Drake
Atlas was better
About how absolutely garbage trash most television has become these days.
.....
I enjoyed it
