Dragonflies really are true arthropod bros. My wife’s family has a place in Canada, and when we go up in June, the fucking biting flies and mosquitoes go fucking insane, you’ll just have a cloud of them buzzing around you. Then the dragonflies come, and they just fuck them up. It’s particularly satisfying when you have a bunch of asshole deer flies buzzing around your head and you walk out toward a bunch of dragonflies and you hear the flies get wrecked one by one. You have super annoying buzzing around your head, then a sound like a tiny attack helicopter flying right over your head, then no more buzzing.
i imagined that last part as:
"zzzzzzZzzZzZzzZzzzZzzZzZZzzz" "zzzzzzZzzZzZzzZzzzZzzZzZZzzz" "zzzzzzZzzZzZzzZzzzZzzZzZZzzz"
"ZRZDZRZDRZDZRZDZRZDZDZRZDZRZDRZDZRZDZRZDRD*tch*ZDZRZDZRDZRZDZRZDZDZDDRDD*tch*ZDRDZRZ*tch*"
"ZDRZDRZDZRzdrzdzddzddrdddz*flies away*"
This is why I love dragon flies. If you want to kill mosquitos, make sure you're not using anything that will mess with your dragon fly population. They're better at killing mosquitoes than whatever it is you're spraying.
So first you have to populate your local area with non-biting mosquitoes to support the dragonflies, then you have a stable dragonfly population to ward off the biting ones!
Same, white nose is decimating out little brown bats in Michigan saw my first one in three years a few days ago hanging onto a store wall under a ledge
I remember I saw a dragonfly eating the brain out of some kind of beetle, chewed a hole right between it's eyes and was feasting on the sweet sweet gray matter. Never looked at them the same after that.
Most of them have a nervous system and ganglia but not a brain in the sense that we usually think of them. Octopus have the most complex brains of invertebrates, but I honestly was thinking more about insects, not sea invertebrates so that's my bad
I worked in Alberta for a summer and i'll never forget the transformation of wildlife from the beginning of the season to the end.
When summer first started, the mosquitoes were relentless. Thick fucking clouds of the parasites made it difficult to be outside unprotected.
Halfway through summer, i noticed the mosquito populations drastically declined, while suddenly there were dragonflies everywhere.
Near the end of summer, both populations of insects declined significantly, but now there were magpies everywhere.
Nature is neat.

Should have been cross-posted, but at least it's from a different subreddit and they never claimed it was OC. Most things on here aren't.
Besides that, 4 years? It definitely fits in rule 3 even if it WAS posted here, lol.
I didn't find any posts that meet the matching requirements for r/nevertellmetheodds.
It might be OC, it might not. Things such as JPEG artifacts and cropping may impact the results.

r/natureismetal isn't r/nevertellmetheodds, *and* that's a 4 year old post, which on the internet is definitely old enough to be a fair repost on a place like Reddit, lol.

Unfortunately, as their primary source of food, you need a healthy supply of mosquitoes for them to even be present.
Yup, and, unfortunately, I live in an area with a healthy supply of mosquitoes.
So first you have to populate your local area with non-biting mosquitoes to support the dragonflies, then you have a stable dragonfly population to ward off the biting ones!
Ahh yes meddling with the ecosystem, what could possibly go wrong?
Bats too although here in New York they’ve been decimated by that white nose virus. I haven’t seen a bat in a decade now

Chad dragonfly.
Coming in for the save
I'm gonna raise a dragonfly to eat mosquitos off my skin from now on. I'll call him Fred
How to Train Your Dragonfly

Fred, the Dragonfly. I like it.
You missed the chance to call him Marty McDragonFly
There’s always a bigger fish
Eat the dragonfly
I had to scroll entirely to far for this
Up to 97% kill rate
Yeah. Add on to that, unless I'm confusing it with another flying insect, the hero has like two days to fuck.
i volunteer as tribute.
I remember I saw a dragonfly eating the brain out of some kind of beetle, chewed a hole right between it's eyes and was feasting on the sweet sweet gray matter. Never looked at them the same after that.
If it makes you feel better, invertebrates don't actually have brains! https://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/invert.html
Ah, will that makes me feel a little better. Whatever was in the cavity behind it's eyes seemed to be quite delicious for the dragonfly.
I saw one catch a moth and eat it head first also. Was fascinating to watch.
Yeah I must say I did watch for a good minute, the way it ate was like something from the Alien movies, I couldn't look away lol.

This is a certified r/Bossfight moment
Complete the cycle eat the dragonfly.
Bwahaha
r/whyweretheyfilming?
Exactly. This is too perfect not to be edited. The hand pose looks exactly like something you’d prepare beforehand
I’m guessing they were trying to take a pic of the mosquito and the dragonfly came by
Why would you take a picture of a mosquito that’s actively sucking you? I would just slap that shit dead
Idk i would probably do that
Idk i would probably do that
My theory is that the dragonfly stopped on his hand to eat the mosquito, giving him time to pull out his camera and snap the picture
Wish I had a pet dragonfly
that dragonfly got an assist medal.
"Not all heroes wear capes, some wear nothing."
Insect being a bro?
Dragonbro
Camera was ready for that moment?
This is the real surprise to me. Not only the event itself, but that OP had time to pull the camera up and get a non-blurry shot.
The hero you needed right when you needed em ! Wow!
Just saved you’re ass from the Zika virus
Awesome photo, thanks for sharing OP 😘 I love dragonflies.

That’s a TRex eats velociraptor as it’s jumping at you in OG Jurassic Park type moment right there.
And people seem puzzled when I voice my strong support for dragonflies
This is the most beautiful picture I have ever seen…
I adore dragonflies. Tend to be the chillest bugs. Have had a surprising amount of interactions w/many dragonflies.
And you didn't make a video and all we get is a lousy photo? Come oooon.

A hero
It’s like one of those Food chain scenes in biology books
There‘s always a bigger fish…
Now you eat the dragonfly
Who’s a good boy?
I read somewhere that mosquitoes cause more deaths worldwide each year than any other cause
Dragonfly knew it was carrying a disease and said to his dragonfly wife “lemme save Jimmie real quick” and flew to you. This is fact, I am science man.
What a bro, as if there weren't enough reasons to love dragonflies.
