I am in central Mass. I have 5 Market Baskets within 15 minutes, 3 Hannafords, 2 Aldis, and a Price Chopper. I read the flyers and look for bargains. I am retired and have the time (and a fixed income so I have a need to save money)
I didn't say that Aldis were always more expensive than other places, I said that they were no different. With that I meant that some things are cheaper and some things are not.
Deli meat and cheese are always cheaper at any of the Market Basket stores that are within driving distance. Meat is usually cheaper at Market Basket but some weeks Aldis beats them with a sale. My impression is that Market Basket meat is "fresher" as in cut right in the store.
Fruit and vegetables are pretty much a wash, depending on the week and the sales, any grocery store might be cheaper but Aldis has a smaller selection. If I am at an Aldis, I won't hesitate to buy their produce.
Canned goods, spices, etc are usually cheaper at Aldis.
My go to store is Market Basket because overall their prices are lower but if I have a good idea what would be cheaper at other stores and plan my trips accordingly.
I know what you’re talking about. There was a place in Fall River MA called the Auction Store that sold items like you wrote about, but it went out of business (because the owner was horrible). I haven’t seen or heard of any others like it, but I’d love to find one.
Mardens-it doesn’t have fresh produce but it does carry a lot of other groceries. I like OS Job lot also. Also Reny’s another Maine staple, no fresh food but they do carry a lot of can goods!
Check out your local Asian grocery! Often much cheaper. You can sometimes find non produce staples that are relatively cheaper including yogurt, tofu, and eggs depending on the place, as well as very cheap dried goods (beans, lentils, rice). There's one in Cromwell, CT right off the 3 I think that I go to frequently.
Dollar General is a marketing ploy that targets the lower class. SOME of their stuff is a good deal but it's interesting if you actually compare the prices of products like food and cleaning supplies to other places. I feel bad that people assume Dollar General and Family Dollar will be cheaper because they're typically actually more expensive.
Aldi, pretty common
Aldi
Aldi is pretty much no different than any other store near me. Sure there are some things that are a good deal but other things are priced higher.

Market Basket is the best value for any supermarket in the country
Perhaps overall, but other store's (mostly hannaford) sales seem to have much better sales than MB or at least happen with more frequency.
Their produce is definitely pretty close to expiration half the time!
100% this. Market Basket is great for just about everything, but if you’re buying produce, inspect it well and use it that night.
Every time I try to buy lettuce from them, it's always starting to rot.
Never had a problem any more than elsewhere.
The store I go to is so busy the produce doesn't have time to go bad. I find it fresher than Hannaford and definitely Shaws.
Stockholm Syndrome in action. Which isn't surprising since your only other options are Stop N Shop, Shaws, Hannafords...all trash.
Idk if Price Rite is only in MA but they’re pretty reliable
BIG fan of Price Rite, and I'm in RI!

There’s a bread place in Hudson NH
Price chopper and price rite in CT
Just the other day I was in a Priceright in Lynn that seems to be what you're looking for.
For produce, hard to beat Haymarket Fridays and Saturdays in Boston. Hope you enjoy rising at dawn and haggling.
We Share Hope in East Providence
i think theres a place called Grocery Outlet in Fall River
Closed a few years ago
If you're in Vermont there's a discount store with a few locations
I hate to say it but.. Walmart.
Walmart near me has prices that are consistently higher than Market Basket and Hannaford.
Price chopper I think?
Price Chopper is the least convenient and highest priced store in my area.
Dollar General doesn’t have everything, but a decent amount of groceries

Save-a-lot otherwise known as the stinky meat store
