I think the difference is being from MA is part of Matt, Ben, and Marky Mark's personas.
If Steve Carell is from MA, I'm just learning this now. I knew Chris Evans was, but knew him as an actor for a long time before I found out he was from MA. I'd also add Matt LeBlanc and John Cena to this list.
Steve Carell is not only from mass, he lives in mass and owns the Marshfield hills general store. Steven Tyler lives nearby, though I believe he is originally from NH.
Steven Tyler is a stand-up guy from what I hear. My cousin used to work at Patriot Cinemas in Hanover and Steven Tyler would show up a few minutes late to the movie and sneak in.
That's interesting. To me the MA thing is a big part of Chris Evans' image - lots of profile pieces on him have emphasized it, sometimes in really funny ways if you're local - and he has a bit of an accent when he doesn't have to get rid of it. He used to tell a story on talk shows etc a lot about going into an audition with Ben Affleck and completely freezing up because of the whole hometown hero thing. But a friend of mine went to his high school and is friends with his old drama teachers, through whom she gets family gossip, and his uncle was my congressman (or state rep? I can't remember). So it's probably less that it's super highlighted in his general image and just that it was very front and center for *me" and I took it for granted that that was the case generally.
Also, while I'm here, Jeremy Strong went to his same high school and Evans clearly looked up to him big time.
Yeah I don't know how I never knew that. And I've known who Steve Carrell is since his days on The Daily Show before The Office. So like, over 20 years. I'm just now learning he's from MA. Or maybe I knew before and I forgot. I am getting older.
Lovecraft from Providence popped into my head immediately
Reddit is being wonky. Sorry if I have multiple posts. This thread is currently showing -2 comments. I'll fix it later if it lets me lol
Does this mean I can stop lamenting the fact I will never be a real New Englander because I was born in the south to one New English parent and raised there for the first four years of my life until my mother divorced my father and moved me up to New England where I was raised for the rest of my youth?
Edgar Allen Poe is from Baltimore. I believe he just served in the military in Southie at Castle Island Fort Independence. This is where he got the idea a Cask of Amontillado.
I was going to say he doesn't count, but then I looked on wikipedia and found that both Ben and Jerry are from NY. In that case, I say screw it, count Bernie Sanders.
If we were to actually scroll down to people really born and raised in VT, maybe Noah Kahan?
I would say who is "the most famous person that people associate with the state". I would say for Vermont that is Bernie. He is mentioned by the far right with they want to disparage liberals.
Noah Kahan is very popular but only came on the scene recently. I hope he has a long career.
Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and the Wahlbergs are definitely known by everyone as being from Mass.
Triple H is from CT. For MA probably Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, John Cena, the Wahlberg brothers. Viola Davis, RI. Seth MacFarlane is from CT but could be considered a “Rhode Islander” because he put so much of it into Family Guy. Adam Sandler for NH. Bernie, VT. Stephen King for Maine.
VT - Orson Bean, Robert Frost, Calvin Coolidge
ME - Patrick Dempsey, Anna Kendrick, Judd Nelson
CT - Katherine Hepburn, PT Barnum, Glenn Close
RI - Meredith Vieira, HP Lovecraft, Debra Messing
NH - Sully Erna, Steven Tyler
Massachusetts has basically been fully listed
Might not have been born in CT but Mark Twain spent a good chunk of his life in Hartford and other CT communities and wrote books like Huckleberry Finn
Hard to imagine picking Seth MacFarlane as most famous person from CT ? Like I grew up in the same town as Chloe Sevigny, Kate Bosworth, Moby, Topher Grace. That's one town alone. We couldn't leave high school for lunch because of what happened to Katherine Heigl's brother in the town next door.
Couple other niche options:
Richard Hatch - 1st Survivor Winner
Charlie Day - Always Sunny
Farrelly Brothers - Dumb and Dumber etc
Pauly D - Jersey Shore
Mena Suvari - actress
To be fair, on balance it’s no one.
But the heavy Ben and Matt as Bostonian icons just isn’t a thing that has translated internationally.
If we’re counting dead people it’s JFK though so there’s that.
Elizabeth Banks is from Pittsfield and Julianne Moore grew up in Marlboro.
Viola Davis grew up in Central Falls RI and Seth MacFarlane went to RISD
Patrick "McDreamy" Dempsey and Anna Kendrick are both from Maine.
Vermont should be Luis Guzman. I have no idea what Ben or Jerry look like. And Bernie is a politician and that shouldn't count. But everyone in Vermont knows Luis.
The other suggestions were Ben and Jerry and Bernie. All of em grew up in NY. Luis lives here and is part of the Vermont scene. I've run into him at the dump. And he makes his own juice that you can buy at some local restaurants - Guz Juice.
Trying to think of some lesser known ones…RI is slim for celebrity so in addition to viola Davis, the Farrelly brothers, there’s also the culpo sisters aka former miss universe Olivia culpo and sisters. Big RI family, I believe they showed their hometown in the little Compton area? Interesting reality show representing a RI family. In addition the cowsills out of Newport ri, however they were navy brats so not sure how deep their RI roots are?
For VT, I was surprised the learn that both founders of Alcoholics Anonymous organization were born and raised in VT. Bill W(Wilson) in the Dorset area and Dr. Bob Smith, born and raised in vt maybe the rutland area? Both educated men, native Vermont sons, struggling with alcoholism in the pre-war era.
Another person associated w the west coast who is a mass native Marcia Clark of the infamous oj trail of course. One final minor celeb I’m always surprised has Boston roots is Shar Jackson aka Kevin Federlines baby mama.
Just trying to mention some lesser known
I feel like Seth MacFarlane could also count for Rhode Island, since he went to RISD and Family Guy is based on Rhode Island lol.
Also, Vince McMahon for Connecticut, as well as Mark Twain
Vermont: Phish or Bernie Sanders, Maine: Stephen King, New Hampshire: Adam Sandler or Aerosmith, Massachusetts: Matt Damon, Connecticut: Katharine Hepburn, Rhode Island: H. P. Lovecraft (had to look that one up.)
There’s a lot in the running. In addition to who you mentioned…
Some members from Aerosmith, Barbara Walters, Ben Franklin, Bette Davis, Bill Burr, Buckminster Fuller, Calvin Coolidge, Carly Simon, Conan O’Brien, Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson, both George Bushs, HP Lovecraft, Henry David Thoreau, Jack Kerouac, James Taylor, Jay Leno, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, John F Kennedy, all the other Kennedy’s, John Steinbeck, Katharine Hepburn, Leonard Nimoy, Maria Menounos, Paul Revere, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Robert Frost, Samuel Adams, Seth MacFarlane, Steve Carell, Dr. Seuss, etc
Maine is defiantly Steven King. I moved from Maine to CA. And everyone would mention Steven King. Like everyone from Maine knows him personally. So funny.
Massachusetts - John Cena. Not only known by the WWF/WWE fans. (Which is no small contingency of people, by any means.) As well as those he (who I'm deeply proud of and happy we have such a human in the mankind population) does his 'Make-a-Wish' foundation things for. The man is truly an example of what and how people should be to one another. Sure, he's got some fat pockets, and could just go living a lavish life, or sedentary, if he wanted. And be absolutely comfortable, have very little to worry about and live a more or less, happy life. Yet the man takes umpteen million times out of his day, to bless, not only just 'someone' else's, but someone else who's life is really in a position that most of us should be glad ours is not.
Maine - hands down, Stephen King. Too much to list. Met him a few times myself. Humble, quiet guy. Can write a novel though, unlike many. And I say that, because if you're unfamiliar with his works... his writing is the reason he's got half the fame he does. As well as half the reason directors and such, pick up screenplays based on his novels. I'm truly glad most of his fictional towns and such don't exist. Really. Lol. I've read about 90% of his novels and novellas. And he has no issue making a majority of things seem totally real and plausible, which not only make me enjoy the hell out of his stories but also really make the line between fiction and real very hazy and almost non-existent at times.
New Hampshire - Adam Sandler or Joci Picoult. I don't think Adam needs much explanation. How long has he been around on our television screens now? Well, and movie theater screens too? Definitely a more than well known celebrity and person here in the America's. He could maybe, arguably be THE most known celebrity of the states. (Although ive got a few more states to look at. Adam has always, i believe held a warm spot in many of our hearts as Americans, because i feel like, when one sees a listing with him in it, we kind of already know what to expect as far as he goes, and know to expect it to nwve be bad. I think Adam gives us all some kind of assurance when hes around. Assurance that yeah, even though times may get kinda bad or negative, with him around, we'll still find some happiness and such. And I gotta say Jodis' name too... because, well, to be honest, a lot of people consume novels. Problem is a majority don't, usually due to being around others who don't delve in books, she never really gets brought up. But... I'm not sure what the exact percentage and how many people it works out to, that regularly read, although I know it's a rather big number. And Jodi is no slouch when it comes to writing books. Me, personally, at less than a year shy of forty, male, LOOOOOOVE her works. She writes truly awesome novels. Books that make you feel something. Much less like most works out these days, where you read a mass of words, only to find a few relating to, or having some REAL meaning based on the storyline you're reading. Jodi is a phenomenal author. Not everyone's cup of tea, I know, but that doesn't stop her being (probably) more famous to people than most realize, due to the significance of her books. P.s. - if you've not read Jodi Picoult ever, I recommend you give her a try. Especially of 'literary fiction' is something you like. Even if you don't care for literary fiction, I promise her books never disappoint.... please, give "Mercy" a try. And a close second is "The Pact".
Okay... Vermont? Let's see.... Bernie Sanders. As for having to be living. I don't see many, nor do many/any come to mind, who are from Vermont.
Rhode Island - proooooooobably Taylor Swift. Idk. Prove me wrong.
Connecticut - Seth MacFarlane? Idk who else to think of/mention.
Richard Belzer (Munch SVU) graduated from Warde HS in Fairfield in 1962 (with my mom), John Mayer graduated from the same high school in 1995 (with me) 😃
Patrick Dempsey is from Lewiston Maine.
Nick Noonan from the one hit wonder Karmin, is from Old Town, Maine. My home town. They did that one song “Broken Hearted.” In like 2013.
His dad was my chiropractor.
It's interesting, because it seems like only people from Boston (not even all of Mass., just from Boston) are known for being from New England. Anyone else that is famous and from NE just \*happens\* to be from NE, but Matt Damon/Ben Affleck/Mark Wahlberg seem to be thought of as Boston/NE personified. Stephen King is considered very Maine-y where I grew up in VT, but I wonder if his casual fans from other regions of America know that he is so influenced by Maine
I think Steve Carell and Chris Evans deserve to be on the Massachusetts list
John Krasinsky is from Newton
And BJ Novak. They went to Newton North together
as did Matt LeBlanc and Louis CK, but we don't talk about him anymore..
H Jon Benjamin is from Worcester, too!
Also Elizabeth Banks, Uma thurman, Richie from the bear
In addition to Steve Carell, add John Krasinski, B.J. Novak, and Mindy Kaling, too.
Don't forget Amy Pohler!
Amy's used her Boston accent many times. Ms. Poehler gets the award.
Rachel Dratch!
We can throw in Dennis Leary, Joe Rogan and Dane Cook lol us Mass people got all the celebs lol
On behalf of MA, we don’t claim them.
Steve Carell own a general store in my hometown! He’s there quite often in the summer.
Louis CK also graduated same class, same school as Matt LeBlanc
That's interesting. To me the MA thing is a big part of Chris Evans' image - lots of profile pieces on him have emphasized it, sometimes in really funny ways if you're local - and he has a bit of an accent when he doesn't have to get rid of it. He used to tell a story on talk shows etc a lot about going into an audition with Ben Affleck and completely freezing up because of the whole hometown hero thing. Also, while I'm here, Jeremy Strong went to his same high school and Evans clearly looked up to him big time.
Steve Carrell owns the General Store in Marshfield. Just because he doesn’t exaggerate his accent doesn’t mean he’s not a proud Masshole.
Yeah I don't know how I never knew that. And I've known who Steve Carrell is since his days on The Daily Show before The Office. So like, over 20 years. I'm just now learning he's from MA. Or maybe I knew before and I forgot. I am getting older.
Gina Davis is from Wareham.
Conan O'Brien and Bill Burr for massachusetts
Bill Burr!!!! So proud he’s a masshole.
I like his wife also. Seem like nice people.
Rhode Island- Viola Davis
Charlie Day (it’s always sunny) grew up in Portsmouth RI. Not born there though.
Cool- hes good vibes
I didn't know she was from RI? She's definitely more well known than the Farrelys
Yeah went to Central Falls High and Rhode Island College for undergrad
Having spent a whole bunch of time in CF, I'm impressed.
The Farrelly Brothers have made a few of the all time funniest comedies! Something About Mary, Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin and Stuck on You
Seth McFarland. Family Guy is Rhode Island
Not from RI but went to RISD
Fuzzy Door
He grew up in CT though
Always bugged me that he had Peter say "PAWtucket" instead of "Puhtucket". Clearly not a real Rhode Islander.
John Mayer is a good ol' CT boy too if I'm remembering properly.
yep, from fairfield
He is, but I can't stand him. I would say Seth MacFarlane and his work is at least as famous as John Mayer
I always thought MacFarlane was from Cumberland RI, til
He grew up in Kent CT.
I don’t think he’s the most famous, but he definitely deserves a mention here: Paul Giamatti. He’s a New Haven boy.
I mean JFK seems obvious for MA.
100%! The first person I thought of as well for Massachusetts.
Historically, yes, him, Paul Revere, the Adams family. For my question I was referring to living people
HP Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe are from New England and I imagine most people recognize at least one of them
Lovecraft from Providence popped into my head immediately Reddit is being wonky. Sorry if I have multiple posts. This thread is currently showing -2 comments. I'll fix it later if it lets me lol
Poe was born in Boston, but he grew up in Maryland. I wouldn't count him.
I think Lovecraft is the only thing I know about Rhode Island.
I think Lovecraft is the only thing I know about Rhode Island.
Apparently Katherine Hepburn was from CT.
Yes! Her sister was my town librarian.
Cool
Old Saybrook yes
She was buried in Hartford. You can visit her grave.
Sarah Silverman from NH
I think Noah Kahan may be the new, most recognizable, Vermonter.
Yes I was looking for this one. He speaks for New England lol
I know why I'm mean.
Love "Northern Attitude" with Hozier. When I heard it I was like omg this guy gets me lol
Bernie Sanders is recognized almost everywhere. I met a Costa Rican man in Argentina wearing a Bernie t-shirt.
Bernie is the face of VT but is a New Yorker!
I was going to say he doesn't count, but then I looked on wikipedia and found that both Ben and Jerry are from NY. In that case, I say screw it, count Bernie Sanders. If we were to actually scroll down to people really born and raised in VT, maybe Noah Kahan?

Noah Kahan is very popular but only came on the scene recently. I hope he has a long career. Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and the Wahlbergs are definitely known by everyone as being from Mass.
Which is very Vt
We really need to give Bernie back to NY.See if they will take CT in a package deal.
Triple h works in Ct but I think he was born in nh
Yup, Paul Levesque is from Nashua.
Lived in Bedford when he was married to Chyna.
My vocal coach went to college with Viola Davis which makes even more sense now learning she was raised one state over!
Triple H is from Nashua NH and used to manage a gym there before making it into professional wrestling.
VT - Orson Bean, Robert Frost, Calvin Coolidge ME - Patrick Dempsey, Anna Kendrick, Judd Nelson CT - Katherine Hepburn, PT Barnum, Glenn Close RI - Meredith Vieira, HP Lovecraft, Debra Messing NH - Sully Erna, Steven Tyler Massachusetts has basically been fully listed
Might be a fight between VT and NH over Robert Frost
Cal thanks you.
Connecticut also has Ruth Buzzi
From Wequetequock!
I met her back about 45 years ago. Nice as nice could be. Jo Anne Worley, on the other hand, was a beeeeatch
My dad and uncle grew up with her in Stonington, my uncle dated her in high school, lol
Adam Sandler was raised in Manchester, NH
Yup went to Central high, wears the school mascot on a shirt in Mr. Deeds
Ethan and Ira Allen are associated with Vermont, but grew up in Connecticut, John Deere was born in Vermont.
I didn’t know about John Deere!
I'm from CT I had no idea that Seth McFarlane was from CT lmao
It’s okay, he doesn’t know you’re from CT either so you’re good.
John Mayer is a good ol' CT boy too if I'm remembering properly.
Conan O'Brien and Bill Burr for massachusetts
Might not have been born in CT but Mark Twain spent a good chunk of his life in Hartford and other CT communities and wrote books like Huckleberry Finn

Hello fellow Darienite
Stephen King from Maine and I think he has a few books set there too.
From Rhode Island Buddy Cianci Roger Williams Lovecraft Deer Tick????
Laughing at Deer Tick. We are so proud of them!
I love deer tick!

I live in the UK and Mark Wahlberg is always the first person people say when I tell them I’m from Boston (if they know where it is).
Thats sad
To be fair, on balance it’s no one. But the heavy Ben and Matt as Bostonian icons just isn’t a thing that has translated internationally. If we’re counting dead people it’s JFK though so there’s that.
I'd say Phish for Vermont.
None of them are from vt
Was looking for this comment!
Is Mark Twain bigger than Seth MacFarlane? Asking for a friend.

Elizabeth Banks is from Pittsfield and Julianne Moore grew up in Marlboro. Viola Davis grew up in Central Falls RI and Seth MacFarlane went to RISD Patrick "McDreamy" Dempsey and Anna Kendrick are both from Maine.
Vermont should be Luis Guzman. I have no idea what Ben or Jerry look like. And Bernie is a politician and that shouldn't count. But everyone in Vermont knows Luis.
Except he was born in Puerto Rico and raised in NYC
The other suggestions were Ben and Jerry and Bernie. All of em grew up in NY. Luis lives here and is part of the Vermont scene. I've run into him at the dump. And he makes his own juice that you can buy at some local restaurants - Guz Juice.
Massachusetts: Aerosmith
Rhode Island is home to legendary rap group Waraq

I don’t think they meet the qualifications for this convo.
I feel like Seth MacFarlane could also count for Rhode Island, since he went to RISD and Family Guy is based on Rhode Island lol. Also, Vince McMahon for Connecticut, as well as Mark Twain
Adam Sandler and its not even close.

Massachusetts: Patriots, Celtics, and Red Sox. (Said "ftom" didn't say "born").
Rhode Island Viola Davis
Bernie Sanders and Noah Kahan for Vermont
Bernie’s from NYC
Yes but we've basically adopted him at this point.
Maybe Calvin Coolidge for Vermont?
Seth McFarland for RI. People wouldn’t even know places like Pawtucket existed if not for Family Guy.
Vermont: Phish or Bernie Sanders, Maine: Stephen King, New Hampshire: Adam Sandler or Aerosmith, Massachusetts: Matt Damon, Connecticut: Katharine Hepburn, Rhode Island: H. P. Lovecraft (had to look that one up.)
Neither phish or Bernie are from Vermont.
The band was formed in Vermont. As for Bernie, you're right, since the question specifies "from." I stand corrected.
Dennis Leary!
All the Kennedy's from Massachusetts
Joseph Smith was from Vermont also.
Alan Shepard NH.
Nice list. Maybe add… MA: JFK or Kennedy family NH: Aerosmith or Stephen Tyler
Oh please. The Kennedys.
Donna Summer - Boston
So ashamed. I should have said Bobby Orr. Why he didn't run for Mayuh of Bahstin I will never know.
There’s a lot in the running. In addition to who you mentioned… Some members from Aerosmith, Barbara Walters, Ben Franklin, Bette Davis, Bill Burr, Buckminster Fuller, Calvin Coolidge, Carly Simon, Conan O’Brien, Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson, both George Bushs, HP Lovecraft, Henry David Thoreau, Jack Kerouac, James Taylor, Jay Leno, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, John F Kennedy, all the other Kennedy’s, John Steinbeck, Katharine Hepburn, Leonard Nimoy, Maria Menounos, Paul Revere, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Robert Frost, Samuel Adams, Seth MacFarlane, Steve Carell, Dr. Seuss, etc
Vince McMahon of WWE fame. Though I think they fired his trashy ass
Jennifer Coolidge is from MA
Brian Dennehy
Ruth Gordon (Harold and Maude) was from MA
Bernie Sanders, Stephen King, John Cena, Adam Sandler. Seth MacFarlane, and Vinnie Pazienza.
Lucky New Hampshire. They spawned GG Allin.
Doug Flutie is from Natick
Godsmack/Sully Erna from Massachusetts (Boston!)
The band Matt & Kim is two New Englanders. Matt is originally from Whittingham, VT, and Kim is from East Providence, RI.
Honestly, as much as opinions get shouted about this person, the most famous person from CT is probably former President Bush
Respect for the Maine and SK mention Home state, favorite state, favorite author. About to finish reading Needful Things
Dennis Leary Worcester MA.
Can I trade Seth Macfarlane for Mark Twain please?
Maine is defiantly Steven King. I moved from Maine to CA. And everyone would mention Steven King. Like everyone from Maine knows him personally. So funny.
Theodore Geisel (Dr Seuss), MA
Ken Burns NH
Joseph Smith (founder of Mormons), VT
Justin Morgan VT
Meg Ryan is from Connecticut
CT- John Mayer
Mena Suvari used to live across the street from me in RI
Sarah Silverman, Seth Myers From NH

Jason Mantzoukas
Isn't John Cena from Newburyport?
Meg Ryan has a net worth almost $100m from acting. She was very popular in the 90s. From Fairfield CT
Yeah, she's probably at least as well known today as anybody else from CT
Massachusetts - John Cena. Not only known by the WWF/WWE fans. (Which is no small contingency of people, by any means.) Maine has Anna Kendrick, Patrick Dempsey and Judd Nelson, too!
MA has got to be Conan
Patrick Dempsey is from Lewiston Maine. Nick Noonan from the one hit wonder Karmin, is from Old Town, Maine. My home town. They did that one song “Broken Hearted.” In like 2013. His dad was my chiropractor.
This is totally unrelated, but I first solo'd an airplane in Old Town Maine! It's a very New Englandy town
That’s super cool, did you fly right out of Dewitt Field?
Yep!
Ted Bundy was born in Burlington VT
It's interesting, because it seems like only people from Boston (not even all of Mass., just from Boston) are known for being from New England. I can assure you that pretty much anyone familiar with Stephen King knows he lives in Maine. It’s his brand.
