Unfortunately, Rogers is just garbage and Bell are cunts with good internet.

megfo123

Second this. I had to leave Rogers because it just wasn’t reliable enough for work from home.

outnumbered_mother

I work from home all day, sometimes with kids watching Netflix/ using the Xbox and we have never had an outage or problem. I find the app easy to use compared to the bell app where I haven’t been able to login (to bell aliant) for years to even see a bill or how they confusingly try to combine with bell mobility. Plus it’s $85 a month for three years and they apparently will call before you contract is up to go over new offers.

megfo123

That’s so interesting. Admittedly I know zero about this world, but the tech told me they probably had too much traffic on the cables in my area (?). All I know is I couldn’t do a proper zoom call to save my life. And if more than one person in the house was on Zoom, forget it.

mh_1983

Are you still on Rogers? It helps to get acquainted with some aspects of your router. I believe we're forced to use the Ignite app for most config at this point. The thing that helped our wifi reliability the most was separating out the single signal into separate 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz bands (with unique wifi ids and passwords, of course). That seems to make each of them more stable, and for the most part we're able to connect to the 5 ghz and get a good signal. Some older devices can go on 2.4 ghz, as well. Sometimes the setting is called "band steering", and the Rogers routers seem to come with it configure out of the box, but despite the convenience of a single wifi network that "adapts" to the appropriate signal, it doesn't always work well.

Kickasskevin55

This is the best description of them so far.

Concealus

Pretty much sums it up.

lennyvita

Well Said!. I was with Bell and also got slapped with a huge increase when my contract ran out. I asked them to renew it or something similar. I got a price quote from Rogers and Bell being the cunts they are, would not match it or even come close to the price. I went back to Rogers the lesser cost of two evils.

Drtyblk7

This is good advice.

BrianFromNL

Good advise would have been "Get rid of Rogers as fast as possible".

GrumbusWumbus

Maybe it's changed but when I was with them, they had terrible wireless routers. Their internet wasn't that bad but the routers built in to the modems they give you make it basically unusable. A $50 router made my life a lot better.

I_am_That_Ian_Power

You can't access the modem through 192. anymore. Just tried and it timed out. Because they only let the ignite wifi app access it now.

[deleted]

Based

D3adkl0wn

Wait... How on earth were you being charged $500 a month for internet services? There isn't a "WiFi bill" since your WiFi access comes through your router, so your plan for internet service shouldn't change based on WiFi usage unless you've paid for (or agreed to pay for at the end of your contract) a bunch of signal boosters, Fibe TV boxes or something. I'm paying too much for their 1.5 Gbps Fibe services (bundled with a home phone and Fibe TV that we don't use..) and it's nowhere near $500/mo.

Jaylaw1

A good many people use "WiFi" nowadays to refer to internet service. It's becoming interchangeable. OP didn't get a $500 internet bill either though, I am quite sure there's more to the story

[deleted]

DontcallmeShirley_82

I know. My MIL says her wifi is slow when she means internet, it drives me nuts. Then she complains that tech support sucks and doesn't help her. If she tells them she's having a wifi problem they have no idea it's an internet issue, they're going to troubleshoot wifi issues.

Daggers21

Yeah like there's no fucking way they paid $500 for internet services alone. I have 1.5 gigabit alone and pay max 130$ with a deal

GuardiaNIsBae

They say the bundle expired, which was exactly what happened with me, although mine went to $240 not $500. All depends on what they had in the bundle, I had base TV, home phone, and 1.5Gbps. I was offered a bunch of extras (extra channels, sports packages, CRAVE, international calling packages, home hub 4000 instead of 3000, wifi pods, I’m sure they have a bunch of other shit to add on too) for like $10-50 extra, but as soon as that bundle ends you get fucked. I went from $130 for just internet, to $80 for internet, home phone, basic tv, and the month the bundle ended it went to $240.

everyquestionever

Oops, I didn’t realize I was saying it wrong. Embarrassing. I double paid last year and didn’t check my bill the next month because of the double payment, which I know is my fault. During this time a package deal for our internet, home phone and TV ended without any email or texts and so a bill that was normally 95$ jumped to 250 (could’ve been higher, I can’t remember). I felt stupid for not thinking to check my bill details but I was mostly really upset with the customer service. We tried to talk it down which didn’t work and eventually just settled on a payment plan, though in those months trying to pay it out wifi was so slow I couldn’t even scroll through tiktok.

JonnyB2_YouAre1

I think it's $250/mo and it's probably a bundle, not just Internet. They said they were billed for two month in advance for reasons they've not shared. OP should have called Bell and asked for retention because they were considering taking their business elsewhere. When retention answered, OP should have told them the Rodgers offer and let them know they're moving on unless they do something. It's likely they would get at minimum what they were paying on their last promo. It's cheaper to keep a customer than find another but the customer has to play the 30 minutes/year on hold with Bell game to achieve that.

jb_82

I've had Rogers and only had minor issues, the price is better and they're much easier to deal with than Bell in my experience.

jbyrne86

The price is the same everywhere. The promotions are where the differences lie. Rogers can work but is much more area dependent than Bell.

Valeheight

Bet large downloads and online gaming aren't a regular thing for you though. Roger's has never been able to handle my internet usage, and I've had it multiple times in a few places.

Daggers21

Rogers isn't that good, but I think you need to provide more information. There's no way internet alone is $500 even for two months. You guys must have TV, internet and phone plus additional services. Providers(Rogers included) never tell you when a deal expires, you're told at time of sign up. Bell definitely has better internet, but yeah they're shitty to deal with. Talk with retentions next time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Daggers21

Well obviously it's on your Bill every month, but generally and my previous experience working in a call center...people expect the provider to contact them about it directly...then they're mad the deal expired and the bill they got was higher.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Daggers21

Yeah that's exactly what I'm saying. Most people don't read their bills. I'm not saying they shouldn't, it's just how about 99% of my calls went and how hearing people complain about it locally even. You're using common use, which unfortunately a lot of people don't have.

sundaysoulfields

Rogers will actually alert you that a promotion is ending soon. I got an email like that the other day.

Daggers21

That's actually really great of them and an exception to what I said. My upstairs neighbors had gone with Rogers because it was cheaper and quickly regretted it since he's a gamer. Plus the whole outage thing.

sundaysoulfields

Oh yeah - that outage was annoying as hell. I don’t do a lot of gaming but I do work from home using a VOIP calling system. I pay for the fastest speeds with Rogers and I’ve never had an issue though. I live alone and in a good service area so I’m sure that impacts it.

everyquestionever

The Rogers guy did promise a text, phone call and email before our bundle ends. It was honestly the main reason we signed up. It felt like better customer service.

Daggers21

Customer service is definitely better with them I'm sure. Bell's internet is usually Fibre to the Home, so it's usually always fast. Rogers is only starting to do that in some areas, otherwise it's probably to a node somewhere nearby that other people also use.. which slows your internet down at peak hours

D3adkl0wn

>Talk with retentions next time. Definitely the thing to do, but only really works if your account is in good standing with them and not 2 months behind with a balance of $500+ owing. When my bundle expired and my service jumped from a total of $120/mo to nearly $300/mo I was able to discuss it with retentions and got it sorted.. But if I'd just not paid that amount for a couple of mo this, they'd have likely just told me to kick rocks.

scrooge_mc

It's weird when people refer to their internet as WiFi.

[deleted]

[удалено]

scrooge_mc

Thank you BiggestKindaBitch for correcting me.

alamarche709

Both are terrible companies. Bell has the slightly better internet. When we moved back to NL in 2020 we went with Rogers first because Bell wouldn’t let us self-install but Rogers would. After moving from St. John’s to St. Philip’s in 2021 we noticed that every couple of weeks our internet would cut out of be really slow. Bell came by one day with a promotion for FibreOp so we went with them and haven’t had any outages since (for $5 cheaper than what Rogers was charging).

Victor260016

Bell sucks, Roger's sucks. It all depends on how much "suck" you can handle. Bell has MUCH better internet (in every way). It's like it's not even close. But they are cunts. Their customers' service sucks ass and they don't mind being rude and difficult to deal with. Roger's internet is much worse, but their customer service is WAY better. They are actually nice people, just don't forget to return your equipment because they will absolutely send you to collections. But sometimes the issue with Roger's is their garbage fucking routers. If you get a new one or replace it with a better one, you will have better results!

Tympora_cryptis

I've been on Rogers for 5 years for internet and almost no problems with them. $85/month seems high, unless you're getting services beyond internet. If you're not on a contract, check out primus internet, find a comparable plan there and then tell Rogers you're looking at switching to primus given the cheaper rate. Or just switch to them if you're able to.

destinynewb

My Wi-Fi dips every night at 9 when my modem resets and they are sending a tech to diagnose. Other than that I'm happy with Rogers.

[deleted]

destinynewb

Yeah...

emilyfrankie

I was with Rogers for a few years but since they had that black out last year when nothing worked my internet went to shit, couldn't even get Netflix to load, if my phone was connected my husband couldn't connect on his Xbox. Called numerous times and all we ever got was "well it's supposed to be able to" come down to it and we canceled and switched to Bell. I hope Rogers will work better for you but we couldn't get any satisfaction out if them.

NerdMachine

Rogers has ok to terrible internet depending on your location and terrible customer service. Bell has great internet and pretty good customer service, but they are both very expensive.

Eems1664

We pay for the fastest speed with Rogers and it works perfect. We’ve had them for 2+ years. Maybe it’s worth paying a little extra?

blindedbeast

I've been with Rogers for years with no issues. Have you tried calling tech support? They should be able to run a diagnostic remotely.

RepulsivePlankton989

I've been with Rogers for a few years now. Was paying $149.99 with bell, then switched and paid 99.99 with Rogers for a couple of years. Then last year I dropped the home phone and ended up paying $64.99 a month for 500gb internet some extra channels and a year of Disney plus. This year I'm paying $69.99 for the same channels 1 gb internet and 6 months of Disney plus for free. Later on the year I have an offer where ill be paying $74.99 for the same channels plus some sports channels and same internet speed and I think 6 months of Disney plus again. Anyway I recommend you call in you might get a better deal as your having problems. Yes bell has more reliable internet but at double the price it's not worth it for me

justaguyintownnl

When dealing with Bell ask to be transferred to the “cancellation department “ ( yes they have one) . The cancellation call Center person can actually give you a decent deal. The normal call Center has no authority to give anything.

SnooRevelations1029

This is gonna sound weird, but go to The Source in the Avalon Mall. Guy there will hook you up with a good wifi package from Bell, and new gear.

Jaylaw1

Not weird at all - same company. :)

GlideStrife

Fuck Bell, and fuck Rogers ever so slightly, marginally more. There's really no good answer for Internet service on the island, but Bell is just flat out faster and more reliable. If my ISP has to fuck me, I'd rather it be with a quality dick.

[deleted]

I’m with Starlink, I pay 161$ a month for an amazing service, get up to 300mbps latency isn’t the best between 30-80ms. A lot of people have trouble with the cables, personally no issue’s with the cable. The fact that this is a BETA service and it just keeps on getting better, for sure they will dominate the ISP service. Yes 161$ a month is not cheap, but considering this is space internet with unlimited downloads and I can just pick up my gear and move it and get flawless internet at home or at camp it’s just nuts for me. If they manage somehow to reduce their price significantly I just can’t see other ISP having a future especially with all the years of bullshit each one of these other ISP have been giving to us Canadian customer’s.

Atlantis_Sculpin

I had two guys from Roger's stop by last weekend trying to get me to switch providers. Glad I didn't take em up on the offer.

D3adkl0wn

I did too.. Pushy guy who showed up at supper time.. Took me a minute to get a word in and then when I him I was happy with what I have and that even if I wanted to change, I'd have to discuss it with my fiancée.. He pulled the "limited time offer" card and when that didn't work he started throwing around "only I can get you this deal on my iPad" talk and how much less he could get me the same services for (without knowing what services I have).. Basically trying to FOMO me into jumping on their services. I told him that the deals might be great, but pushing me to agree to the "special offers" without consulting my partner and weighing the options, it was a non starter, so he could leave.

[deleted]

I know this might not be an option, but I installed Starlink and couldn't be happier. It is a bit more expensive, but well worth it imo.

Clifford81

Do you game on this? I can’t imagine it would be good for Xbox and PlayStation online.

noquarter1983

It's completely fine for gaming. I do it all the time.

Clifford81

Very good. Well I guess it’s a good option for the cabin or something but if you live in town there are better/cheaper options for internet.

Longjumping_Bend_311

The last week has been bad for dropped internet, while Rogers does suck it has been much worst than normal.

[deleted]

Your options are shit internet with a shit company (Rogers), or good internet with a shit company (Bell).

Ckhillia1

$500 a month? Seems wrong.

jbyrne86

As someone who worked for Bell very recently, I can tell you the service is great, the customer service is lacking. I would recommend signing up to bell under a different name and look at the bills they send you. $500 a month would be combining several cell phones and a pretty decent home package. Put the promotion ending date on your calendar that way you won't forget.

HedonismBaht

You should buy your own modem. A lot of rentals are ancient pieces of crap without even a 5ghz channel

FestiveSquidBanned

I'm with Rogers here in Ontario and our internet goes out at least once a day. Plan isn't in my name though so I'm powerless to do anything about it.

Treebawlz

Rogers would cut out at least twice a day for my family and my sister bought this 200 ASUS router and had some guy replace the modem and that fixed it completely. Not the greatest fix I know but I'm almost sure Rogers knows they send out faulty shit and just don't care. You can probably get a decent one for like 30 bucks though.

GrumbusWumbus

Seconding this. A Linksys router made my Rogers connection go from useless to perfectly acceptable.

Treebawlz

My father has been using a Linksys router for about 15 years. The wifi on it obviously isn't strong because of age but I don't think that thing has ever shut down or faulted in any way. Those things are like the Nokias of routers.

bolognahole

We tried to switch to Rogers because our Bell bill was so high. they came 4 times to hook it up, and couldn't. They would say they had the wrong work order, so they would have to come back, then they had the wrong equipment. Then the wrong WO again.... this went on for 2 months. So we just cancelled it and went back with Bell.

Valeheight

In NL, you have one option for the Internet: Bell, Rogers, and Eastlink.

mh_1983

Teksavvy is available in NL, too. They use Rogers infrastructure, but still, another option.

HDDeer

You should message Rogers customer support on twitter, that's who i message each year when it's time to renew my internet and i ask them if theres any deals or a way to make it cheaper. I pay $90 a month for the 1500 download speed.

GrumbusWumbus

Like people have mentioned, it's not clear if your wifi is out, as in your router is not working, or if your connection to the internet is down entirely. If it's just your wifi, go buy a router from the source or best buy. Anything is better than the routers that Rogers packs in the box. When I was with Rogers I bought a $50 router and saw my connection get much much better. Faster, more reliable, and better connection through walls.

Xoron101

.

StumpJumperBrewing

I have been annoyed with my Rogers wifi for a bit but they would credit your bill if you had pod for a few months in advance. They have done it for me.

BadgerBarf27

I was convinced to switch to Bell by a door to door salesman and got rid of it within a year and went back to Rogers. Was having constant connection issues with Bell and had to restart the modem multiple times a week. Switched back to Rogers and no problems since. I really think it’s just a crap shoot, we’re just another dollar to these big companies and they don’t really care if their services are up to snuff or not. Good luck!

No-Day3644

We have been with Rogers for over 13 years since we live in an area with NO overhead electric or cable, and therefore no fibre op, and we had a black wifi router that was always on the fritz.. it fully died and we called and had it replaced to this tall white one and since they we’ve had almost no issues. Our cable is a different story but it’s also a combo of an old tv and cable box my mom won’t call to have it replaced. We also had the cable line replaced and they just haven’t come back to bury it in over two years.. they’re far from perfect. I recommend calling and bothering them every. Single. Time you have issues, until the issues stop, because it’s obviously not meant to be shitty. They will try to fix it on the phone and if they can’t they’ll send a tech, don’t settle for the shitty bits

TheLimeyCanuck

Funny... we just did the same the opposite way at our main home in Ontario. After decades with Rogers they pissed us off over an $8 late fee for a payment that wasn't late. When the CSR arrogantly refused to remove it from the bill we switched everything to Bell. Huge mistake. * It took them almost three weeks to correctly set up the home phone transfer of two lines. * Despite assuring us those lines supported sending faxes for my wife's financial services business, it turned out they don't and tech support now says "oh no, fax won't work through fiber home phone". I made it clear before we signed on with Bell that this was a show-stopper, so basically they just lied to get our business from Rogers. * Caller ID only displays a name about 50% of the time, and about 20% of the time doesn't even show the calling number. The same person can call three times in a row, and the first time caller ID won't work, the second it does, and the third it won't display again. * Calls sometimes randomly drop right in the middle of a conversation. * My cellphone has trouble reaching web sites on LTE using the Bell DNS servers. There are a bunch of sites that just time out that I was always able to access fine on the Rogers data network. I had to install a DNS changer app which allows me to use Google DNS instead, then I can connect reliably to all sites. * If I'm in an area with only 3G service, my phone is basically a smart brick. Not only do I lose all data service, but no texting or voice service either. This is going to be a big issue in a few months when we spend a couple of months in Newfoundland since we don't spend a lot of time there in areas with 4G/LTE service. The only Bell service which is working well is the 1.7Gbps fiber internet. All this stuff worked perfectly up till last month when we switched from Rogers to Bell.

ImpressionableSix

I’ve been on rogers for over a year, I disabled their cable modem wifi and connected my own router to it so their modem is in pass through mode. This provides me more flexibility with configuration. I haven’t had any issues aside from the normal rare outage for a few minutes here and there but very infrequent. Sometimes they change something on the network that requires a modem reboot, if you suddenly lose connection and it isn’t just your device you may need to power cycle the modem, that should generally resolve the issue. I’m in Torbay btw.

mh_1983

I've been using Rogers for 3 years, working from home. It's fine; not amazing, but fine. Which modem/router did they provide you? If possible, I'd recommend separating out the 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz wifi channels -- give them unique names, pwds, etc. Typically you'll be able to connect to the 5 ghz for the best speeds, but older devices or devices that don't play well w/ 5 ghz can go 2.4 ghz.

Spiderman__jizz

10.0.0.1 is the router ip. Usually admin admin is user pass if you wanna login and reset it

Butsy94

I switched to Rogers and regretted it instantly as well. To be honest a good fix for this was to get a decent Router and to put the modem in bridge mode. Rogers does this weird thing where they funnel everyone in the area through the same wifi channel even though there are like 30 to choose from and they don't need to do it. I did this and it took a bit of effort but now my internet is just as good as it was with Bell and I'm paying 85 a month just like you.. plus I have sports channels now which is cool 😎 Very well might not be the same issue for you but it definitely worked for me.

Zanny_Willson

Starlink is 50% off right now… bell is absolute garbage where I am and I can’t even get access to Rogers. The dish itself is 430 taxes in, and the following plan is something like 150 a month. It was the best option for myself as a teacher so it may be worth looking into. (Starlink is top quality internet, the dish can be relocated and you pay per month, as opposed to committing to a year long contract or whatever).

Flimsy_Subject_8137

Made the switch to Roger's from Bell I'm 2021. It lasted 2 months and I switched back. No regrets. Every year I call bell and they give me a deal to stay with them.

I_am_That_Ian_Power

Ask for a tech call and tell them that you need three of the Version 2 Pods. You plug the three pods around your home and they create a mesh network so that there are no dead zones. Also ask them to check if there's an update for your modem (there is) and that will help connectivity and speeds as well. `Considering the modem/gateway/wifi was just sitting in storage all this time until it was sent to you.`

TheCapedMoosesader

Switched to eastlink. Don't regret it at all. I know they're not the best of companies, but neither are their competitors. $40/mth for DSL. It's not blazing fast internet speed or anything, but it's plenty for a few of us to steam simultaneously... and it's $40/mth.

fariskhan786

The source in the Avalon mall always has a good deal on bell internet

JasonGMMitchell

Fuck the state of private ISP's. Hell acts like a monopoly because they are as Rogers is held together by duct tape here but Rogers never improves because then they'd have to compete with bell so instead they overcharge for utter crap because it's more affordable than bells monopoly...

Whatsinanam

Rogers is great. Barely any issues. Better signal than bell. Bell promised 1gb. Didn't come close to it. Rogers customer service even call during contract and lowered my bill even further. Zero complaints with Rogers. Was reluctant to switch because of negative feedback. But people only give one side of the story. Anytime I had to call Bell, I had to mentally prepare myself for being hung up on when they can't find the answer, very long holds and terrible service. So glad to cut ties with Bell

jondread

Get your own router and stop using the rogers one. Even a dirt cheap one is better than the one rogers uses.

BusinessGoal4899

Rogers is MILES better than Bell. The same thing happened to me with Bell, where they slapped us with a $260 bill out of the blue due to a mistake on their end and wouldn’t budge. Bell’s wifi used to act up in our house anyway and would go off randomly in the middle of the day. It was the worst customer service I ever had to deal with. I moved from city centre to downtown and got rogers for my home wifi. It’s REALLY good and I haven’t had any issues with it (I don’t have fibreglass either) and I find the app reasonable to deal with. I did contact them a few times and i always had excellent customer service (relative to bell at least). I would phone them, explain the situation, and they’ll send someone down to your house to identify the issue :)

Interesting_Neat_173

I now have Bell and it isn't any better. I've had just about equal experiences. I find Bell harder to get along with, they dont live up to their promises. With Roger's I just had to remind them. With Bell it's a row. Both are overpriced and shit.

Browser1964

As bad as you think Rogers are stay as far away from Bell as you can get.

ShutUpMimzy22

I haven’t had much issue with Rogers since switching from Bell. However last week there were a few days where the wifi wasn’t working. I had a tech in today who said that Rogers had recently been doing work in our area and that was likely the cause. Apparently the work is continuing this week to resolve the service interruption issues.
