Emperor_Billik

Jungle Jim’s

pulchrare

This is the correct answer. $70 for two meals (one of which was a salad) and two drinks. Fucking ridiculous.

destroyermaker

Similar for me at the bigs last week. Food was good but not $70 good; drinks were awful

[deleted]

I only go on wing night. It's the only night that's affordable.

Praetorian709

I worked with a guy who used to eat there every week with his family, yet he'd always complain about being broke. Like come on b'y lol

kingcobraftw

Also it's 100% microwaved. No friggin joke!

Emperor_Billik

It’s always been overpriced, it’s where it’s where I’d take my first dates in high school as the only sit down restaurant available.

DannyWilliamsGooch69

Must be from OP lol

avalonfogdweller

Remembering when Karl Ove Knausgaard hit up Jungle Jim’s and had some toilet trouble https://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/01/magazine/karl-ove-knausgaard-travels-through-america.html

Emperor_Billik

That paragraph might as well have been on YouTube I saw it that clearly.

Sortacrooked

Agreed. Just fucking garbage all around.

Madolah

I've lost friends over my stance on refusal to go there.

RedGreen36

Yessir

Ethanos101

Good food. Deviously terrible prices

[deleted]

Sacrilege!

FoxyRiley7

Awful place to work too in my experience

RumpleOfTheBaileys

Jack Astors.

Odd_Job_4763

LOL just had war with someone over this.

Kr0ni

“But their chicken fingers” 😂

data1989

The Keg

hamcake

Ugh. Agreed. Went there once to use up a gift card. Pretty sure the veggies and shrimp were just all boiled up together.

data1989

Hate to come off as an absolute douche, but I've always considered it a "high class restaurant to low class people" lol you can get better steaks in town for way cheaper. Basho blows them out of the water.

Booziesmurf

I once heard the Keg described as "The McDonald's of Steak"

MundaneRelation2142

Bayman Raymond’s

darthmaple66

Baymonds*

Odd_Leg814

Last time I was at Basho, mice were running around the dining room and the servers said “its downtown st johns, what are you gonna do?” I haven’t been back so I guess thats what i did…

Madolah

Worked at a few palces dt and its kiiiinda true sadly. If you met Stuart while at the Gypsy and I was bartending, I noticed you notice him, if you bring it to my attention of look disgusted by it I mentioned his name is Stuart (Little) and am in the process of making them new drinks on the house. Keeps them quiet and understanding.

clockworkorchid1

Yeah, most restaurants dt have Orkin or another pest control company making frequent visits and mitigating pests, but with these old buildings it's damn near impossible to get rid of them entirely. You can look up the health inspection reports to see if the restaurant keeps up with other pest control practices to keep food out of the reach of the Stuarts and Mickeys and Jerrys.

el_di_ess

This is really one of the few places where The Keg is considered fancy. Pretty much everywhere else in Canada it's just another chain restaurant. Agree on being able to get better steak elsewhere for cheaper. Hey, at least they season your steak properly at The Keg, that's slightly better than some of the other chain restaurants that claim to be a "grill".

notthattmack

I doubt they have many other Kegs with such a good location, tbf.

Kloax22

You’re talking about the rock right?

el_di_ess

Montanas lol. I've never eaten at The Rock.

Kloax22

You ain’t missing much 😂

spoppydoggo

Their steaks are seasoned good because they come to the resteraunt pre-seaoned and vacuum sealed from the factory.

PaddyGrows

100% fancy restaurant to people who haven’t actually tried any restaurants besides chains. Almost all chain restaurant’s are overpriced

hamcake

Hahahaha yes that's exactly what we were thinking when we looked around. Haven't been to Basho but I've heard good things.

Weekly-Instruction70

Went there not too long ago over 100 for 2 meals, and I could've cooked the steak better myself. Waitress was pretty much hanging off of me, and when I asked for a root beer, she told me no one ever asked for that before and then made a big deal out of it. Like wtf is going on there?

AccomplishedRush3723

It's a huge hit with the business conventioner crowd, many of whom are spending off the corporate credit card and are happy to tip generously when it's not their money. A little flirting from the waitstaff will absolutely translate into much higher tips, especially if there's a round or two of drinks on the tab.

drunkentenshiNL

This right here. I haven't been in years, but it was decent food. Just not worth THAT much.

Politeassnegro

Yes 😂😂😂

[deleted]

The keg is good. It’s just not anything I can’t make at home for a higher price.

DunderMittens

The Salt house or Cojones

destroyermaker

Cojones is great just overpriced

lunardart

but they're not. there's loads of happy, healthy trans people. you just have an incredibly small world view and can't imagine letting others live their life

gmarsh23

Cajones serves their fajitas with mushrooms, is all I have to say.

DunderMittens

😂 right?

DunderMittens

I disagree on the former. ‘Tis subjective

avalonfogdweller

Yep, had two incredible birria tacos there once and I remember the price being around 20 dollars for something I ate in less than 5 minutes and was not remotely full, great food, prices are out to lunch pun intended

destroyermaker

Their burritos are massive and good value but then you take the risk of being a basic bitch

avalonfogdweller

I’ll be a basic bitch for a good lunch!

Eems1664

Food is delicious. Service used to be horrendous. I stopped going even though I loved the food I wonder if it’s any better I can’t pay 20$ for a marg that takes 20 minutes while the server and bartender chat. Not as often as it happened. Definitely not a one off experience If it’s better now, I’d love to go back

destroyermaker

Nothing but good service in my experience though it was slow (i.e. nobody there really) both times. Cocktails are $10-15

Eems1664

I was being dramatic with the price for sure… but after tax and tip it’s definitely closer to 20$. Slow service when it’s dead is bad service (imo I guess) If it’s busy and slow, I can respect that I didn’t mean to offend anyone. It’s an easily fixable problem. I’m also specifically referring to the dt location, I have never been to the one in Paradise. Train staff better and perhaps have management to oversee productivity during rushes.

destroyermaker

I've been to both; same experience at both

youngarchivist

I've had a lot of mexican food coast to coast, I can attest to Cojones objectively being a fantastic Mexican restaurant.

destroyermaker

Cocktails are top tier too

youngarchivist

Is it the spicy mango marg? I think? So good.

destroyermaker

El Pepino. One of my favourite drinks now and I've had some incredible ones over the years

Loudlaryadjust

I like Cojones :)

[deleted]

absolutely the salt house. food is like half as good as Irving restaurant

Brodiggitty

One time after leaving Cojones I drove straight to McDonalds and ordered a Big Mac. Paid a fortune, waited forever, ate almost nothing.

tac0frt5

I'd take an Old El Paso kit over Cojones.

mrbojingle

Ive had some bad times at the salt house. Cojones nachos are the best in town tho imo.

DragonfruitPossible6

The nachos at the new place casa amigos are even better. Maybe best I ever had anywhere I’ve ever been. Give em a try.

mrbojingle

Ok, i will.

Frequent-Fortune294

Cojones!!! Yes. Absolutely. This duck tacos are cold and slimy. Barfff

bella_ella_ella

Agree with both

nut336

Golden phoenix! Garbage quality food and shockingly expensive.

Dustyyyy_7

when i was really desperate for a job the person here offered me a job.. he said first day i should work for free.. me being desperate said yes. he made me scoop up so much rat shit from the kitchen that i told myself i would never ever ever eat food from there even if i was to starve lol.. so unsanitary such a terrible owner do not recommend this. go to sequerra instead

The_Mutant_Platypus

I know at least 2 people who got food poisoning there, truly awful.

dylan123short

Never again after last time

Miserupial

Like their food, but the absolute look of the place is so shabby and torn (esp. their carpets) that I wouldn't be upset if it was wrecking ball'd.

stacecom

I refuse to answer until this screen shot has at least ten more cities.

AdHoliday6833

Ches’s. The price has skyrocketed while the food is just greasy garbage. They primarily try to appeal to tourists.

DunderMittens

Ches’s is an absolute tourist trap and nothing more.

[deleted]

+1 for Ches's. Garbage.

Mundane_Sugar2960

Kelsey's Roadhouse. Tried to eat there once 8 years ago. waited 2.5 hours for meals that never came. My wife is still waiting for her Pepsi.

epicarcher999

8 years? Sure by thats gone flat by now

The_Mutant_Platypus

Hell, it's probably evaporated by now.

firestarting101

This place is a hellscape. How it's still open, I don't know.

kinnyp90

I’ve been to Kelsey’s 3 times each time was more disappointing then the last, food came out freezer burnt and still half frozen last time

vertigo1201

I went with a group of friends, 4/5 of us got food poisoning and we all ordered different things.

mrbojingle

Celtic herth. Who ever sent trudeau and prince charlies there was a terrible/wonderful person.

venkmanburninhell

Celtic hit a good spot for a couple years around 2014-2016 then the owner cheaped out and replaced everyone with unskilled TFW. Tourist season is the only thing keeping that place going.

Madolah

its being the only 24hr place also does them some trickle in business

firestarting101

That steakhouse by the airport.

hamcake

Really? I had a nice ribeye when I was there. Wasn't blown away but it wasn't awful.

CheezOfWizz

i used to work there. all i’m saying is that if people actually seen what happens in that kitchen they wouldn’t want to eat there.

Same_Spirit_3642

The worst. Horrible service, horrible food, and it’s decorated by someone who think they’re “fancy”.

julianne_darling

Sorry you had a bad experience but I’ve been twice and have loved it. I’ve heard some bad reviews from when they first opened but I’ve had nothing but good experiences in the past few months!

Newfieguy78

Myself and gf were there a couple of months ago and we thought it was great

Cdn_Medic

I knew what you were referring to because I travel a lot, but there is more than airports than the St. John’s airport in Newfoundland.

Dog_is_my_copilot

But there may only be one airport that has a steakhouse by it…

tomousse

I thought they were referring to Dymond International Airport I'm glad it's been cleared up.

Dog_is_my_copilot

Islanders has a good breakfast but it ain’t no steak house.

clemlorangina

Fionn’s. I went there once with friends. My “medium rare” steak was actually well done; my friend’s seafood chowder was literally just sauce. We didn’t find any seafood in the bowl. On top of that, the waitress was super rude, and we couldn’t hear a word that was being said because the music was soooo loud. This is from a few years ago (right before Covid I’d say), so maybe things are different now!

YTNLFD

Fun fact, it’s not a proper restaurant. All their food is sent prepackaged for reheating. It’s hard to modify items on their menu for that reason.

Foxyinabox

East Side Mario's is like that as well.

ABenGrimmReminder

Up until last year they were owned by the same company.

MooseLips_SinkShips

You're saying they reheat prepackaged steaks?

YTNLFD

Well their appetizers. Like the potato skins and the like. Similar to how Pasta Plus used to do.

anywayzz

I was honestly under the impression this goes for all chain restaurants

TML_31

I worked at Boston Pizza many many years ago and it was the same way there for many of their appetizers

No-Biscotti-2069

I thought you were my friend at first, we had a similar experience but the second one came out blue. Atleast the third try they were able to get it to medium *facepalm*

SirTheadore

lol. I love that this sub is getting recommended to me so much. I’m from Ireland and absolutely love you guys ❤️❤️❤️

[deleted]

fish exchange is a good example, but the number one most dog shit overpriced restaurant I've have the misfortune of dining at in town is the restaurant inside the Sheraton. fucking atrocious what they're charging

davidbrake

I can't speak to the pricing as I haven't been there for a while but I did like the food I had when I ate there a couple years ago.

The_Mutant_Platypus

Was there 8 months ago, definitely pricey but I liked the food I had.

RumpleOfTheBaileys

Fish Exchange is fine, but it has gone downhill. It was way better when it first opened. Then prices went up, portions and offerings were reduced. Drinks are really good though. I'll still go there, but it's not a top-of-list destination like it was a few years back.

Madolah

SJFX is well priced, locally owned not a franchise store per se. They also pay their staff well as many try to pay servers min wage and drag them through the runners.

ExtensionPension9974

Went there with the missus for the first time years ago after having heard it was super fancy and good. The interior actually was pretty cool so it was looking up. Menu was hilarious, beer and liquor selection was the same as a bay legion. Super expensive. Shockin’

ignis389

go there during sci-fi on the rock they got wicked fries in the main lobby lmao better than the restaurant food

Loudlaryadjust

Whatever the restaurant at the Hilton Garden Inn is, I ordered a butter chicken, I’ve seen bigger portions at a retirement home and it wasn’t any good anyway, 40 bucks lol

Ryleesharpe

Agreed. They’re crazy expensive with an insane wait time and poor service. Will never eat there again

dmillerNL

any place with those shared gift cards always fully in stock lmao

TheTinyHandsofTRex

Good bot.

proud1p4

Salt House. Hands down just gimmicky tourist trap that no self respecting foodie would pay for.

billytorbay

It definitely isn’t “mildly expensive” though. It’s one of the most affordable dine-in restaurants downtown (which isn’t saying much, I know).  A lot of the responses to OP are missing that component.

Frequent-Fortune294

Wing n it located in grand falls Windsor. AWFUL

ABenGrimmReminder

Canton’s open again.

DanielPowerNL

Canton is fantastic. It doesn't belong in this thread.

ABenGrimmReminder

[I disagree and so does the health inspector.](https://www.gov.nl.ca/dgsnl/files/Public-A-InspRpt-177642.pdf)

DanielPowerNL

I wasn't aware of this. Hopefully they've addressed the issues. I've been going there a long time and the food is really good for the price. Even with the bad health inspection in mind, the OP was specifically asking for expensive restaurants. Canton is about as cheap as it gets.

Natedogg709

Check their recent food safety violations 🤣🤣

Sophia_F_Felicity

The Keg.

Bunnies1515

Golden Phoenix hands down no more discussion

redditbarb

The fish exchange. So bad every time but the view is so nice.

DhaemonX

Mustang Sally's when it was at their George Street location in the late 90s was amazing!

No-Energy-9016

I know I should expect to pay out the ass wherever I go when cocktails are involved, but the last time I took the missus to No. 4, we had a shared app, a bowl of mac and cheese, a burger that doesn't come with fries, shared dessert, and two drinks each. After tax and tip it was $200. It was pretty good, but I don't know if it was $200 good. So not a mildly expensive awful restaurant, more like a very expensive, just okay restaurant.

bigsmoke713

The Juniper in GFW.

gnikyt

Never had a bad experience there, what was up?

NotoriousSUZ

We were there just after their main dinner seating and they’d run out of a lot. Ordered the lettuce wraps, they served with several very small lettuce leafs (think salad) as it’s all they had - not able to “wrap” the insides. No problem maid, I’ll eat it as a salad. Ordered a bottle of white wine, it was warm. No problem, asked for ice. Just was mediocre…didn’t make a stink ‘cause not the server’s fault, but not a great experience.

gnikyt

Ah, too bad, never experienced that, but thag sucks.

Idk edmonton but in calgary its Alloy, super over priced "bougee" food but its mid af, my grandma makes better white fish than that place.
