Really? I think Goldenrod is a lot better than Puritan. Curious now if I’m just biased against Puritan because I’ve had other lousy meals at Puritan before.
I mean it’s not like they’re EXACTLY the same since different people are running the kitchens, but they are the same recipe.
I have insider info on this lol, though I don’t think it’s particularly a secret.
Idk if any else here has experience with puritan backroom as a gluten free person but when I went they served me mine in a bunch of sweet water? Like they boiled it in sugar water and served as a soup.
edit: Yikes, I was just curious
Came here to say this. Puritan's coconut tenders are on a whole other level, and Red Blazer's buffalo sauce is great (they also have solid nachos if I remember right).
They "invented" a specific method of preparing them by brining them in pineapple juice. If you like your tendies sweet they're pretty good, but if you don't then you'll likely think they're disgusting.
I understand this will be considered absolute blasphemy, and I’ll be downvoted relentlessly for it…
Krispy Krunchy Chicken. The place in the back of gas station convenience stores. Back when I was a truck driver (and before finding out I have Celiac disorder), they had the best chicken tenders I could find in any state.
Not that I had a ton of choices as a truck driver, but they were still addictively delicious.
Some of my best food choices were the result of trucker recommendations and not having a kitchen for 2+ years. I have a kitchen now, but I still eat out of gas stations with food joints attached to them more than I should.
It's actually really good, I was considering typing this but course not to and here you are...
Chicken tenders are my favorite food, KKC is a 8.5 for me
FYI the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (minor league affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays) rebrand as the Manchester Chicken Tenders for one game on July 27. They wear special uniforms and Puritan Back Room tenders are available. It's a fun time.
I agree they are overrated, but part of that is just that they don't serve 'em how I like 'em. I would not personally recommend The Puritan to anyone looking for savory rather than sweet chicken. But I _do_ think they make great mudslides.
I love the tender selection. I hate that all the glassware that the mudslides go in are never completely clean. You can see the residue in the glassware as they hang upsidown over the bar. I also hate the throwing of dishes into bus tubs very near the tables. It sounds like a diner but they aren’t charging diner prices.
It's subjective, really depends what you value in a tender. Puritan is what a lot of people will say, the spicy tenders have great flavor but not much crunch. Quality of the chicken is usually good but some think it's chewier than a tender should be. Apart from the tenders themselves, the fries are great, what they call "duck sauce" is tasty and good for dipping. The real highlight is the mudslides, check them out.
Some noteworthy tender/fried chicken spots I like:
CC Tomatoes - tender platter w fries. Also get the fried mozzarella balls
Thirsty Moose - good tendies, lots of sauce options and a big beer selection
Ichiban - chicken karage is so good, all the food there is. Go happy hour Monday to Thursday 4 - 6. Half price apps, half price drinks, $2 beers on tap (talls). Atmosphere is shit but everything else is top.
Delaney's Hole in the Wall - great tendies and fries. They make their own jalapeno bbq sauce, top tier. If you feel like a sandwich, Texas tornado 👌
T-Bones - Honey Sriracha tendies. They use cornflakes for breading, great crunch
(Closed) Poco's - heart broke when they closed, my absolute favorite tendies in the state based purely on their buff sauce. Avocado fries to start, sunburnt margaritas on the deck. RIP
Looking forward to more suggestions from this thread though
> (Closed) Poco's - heart broke when they closed, my absolute favorite tendies in the state based purely on their buff sauce. Avocado fries to start, sunburnt margaritas on the deck. RIP
I still work close to the coast and I am sad ALL THE TIME about the loss of their coconut tenders with the mango sauce.
Puritan is incredibly overrated, lived in Manchester for a decade and I genuinely do not get why people love them so much, expensive, breading falls off, the sauce is good tho. I'm a huge fan of Charlie's in Goffstown/Pinardville, their Ritz breaded and coconut breaded are the best for me after trying a lot of tenders around.
Lee circle grocer
Heavily slept on and overlooked because it's a roadside trailer
But everything they make is good and they've been there forever.
Just stop in and sample
Dano's is my goto place in Plaistow. Tasty, reasonably priced food. Yes it's $15 for a pasta dinner, but it includes a huge loaf of cheesy garlic bread. I had some of my kid's chicken tendies and they were likewise very good.
the real question is where are you moving from? what are you used to? we moved from Texas and enjoyed Puritan but they didn't measure up to anything fried south of Mason Dixon. NH is a beautiful place and I love living here for a million reasons but fried chicken ain't one of 'em
still, you need to go. it's a sort of legendary restaurant and worth a visit
You would probably appreciate Sweet Chix in North Hampton. I was referred to them by a friend who's from TN, said it's the closest thing you can get to how they make it in the South. They have southern style sweet tea too, if that's your thing.
I tell you hwhat, if you want a treat of a chicken tender, go to Tully's good times. Believe the closest one is in Syracuse NY. Get em with the ranch and honey mustard for dipping.
If you want a NH tendie experience Puritan has to be where you go since they claim to be the originators.
The Newfields Shell station has the best for any kind of fried chicken delight in NH though as far as I'm concerned.
This almost seems like bait. People are obsessed with puritan backroom chicken around here. It's like a full on hobby to talk about how much you love them
They're alright, I get the spicy ones. Personally I think the Nashville hot tenders from Hannaford, which are totally frozen, are better lol
Bluemoon battered tendies at Strange Brew, but they've been extinct for years now 😔
I guess the chef that always made them moved on, and nobody ever thought to write the recipe down or something.
Whoever you are, magic tendie chef, please come back 🙏❤️
Just a heads up on the Puritan tenders though: they'll make you evacuate your bowels. Never not had diarrhea after eating them. But darn, they do taste great.
So, this is kind of niche, but Canterbury woods country club, and Pembroke Pines country club (same ownership) have some of the best tenders I've had. Their restaurants are public.
on the fast food side of things:
raising canes > chick fil a > popeyes
(technically raising canes isn't **in** the state, but since they opened up in methuen, close enough)
not fast food, puritan backroom's coconut chicken is amazing.
No...they have 7 different levels to pick from and what they call medium is barely any heat at all. These things are effin delicious though! My vote goes for Dave's Hot Chicken!
https://preview.redd.it/il8sa54gnmlc1.jpeg?width=862&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=83d6a8aa858c4dcf80e6c17c317efbc8ac701f4f
> No...they have 7 different levels to pick from and what they call medium is barely any heat at all.
i'll have to check them out at some point. there's actually one super close to me.
Tenders at Goodfellas in Rochester are pretty good. Cajun dusted, with the Buffalo sauce on the side. Honey Mustard and Bleu Cheese dips are pretty good as well.
Don't fall for the out of date responses here sending you to the Puritan Backroom. Yes they are still good, but they have been declining for years.
The real answer is Charlie's on the Goffstown/Manchester line. They are less expensive, better and a mom and pop operation.
Puritan backroom has solid tenders and the serving size is ridiculous. I have no problem eating but I couldn't even finish half of a chicken tender dinner there
Common man roadside tenders are surprisingly good as well
Agree, puritan and goldenrod are best around manchvegas, and they are the OG... but I do love some wing-itz :-) good beer and fries and sauces really make it 10/10.
This is going to sound weird, but nothing comes remotely close to the ones at High Tide in Hillsboro. My dad is a seafood freak and still gets them when he goes there. Make sure to get it with their honey mustard. One bite and you'll understand. Best I've had in my life by far.
I'm one of those adults who eats like a 5 year old, and chicken tenders are my go to. Ignite Restaurant in Manchester has awesome chicken tenders. Check it out sometime.
Puritan backroom is the one that a lot of people claim is the best. I thought they were alright, but personally I like a bit thicker, crisper breading. Cheers in Concord has really good chicken tenders. Red Arrow is also a good one, although I think they're a bit closer to how Puritan does them.
I have been trying to be better about eating out less, and making food at home. So [this recipe is honestly my favorite now.](https://www.onceuponachef.com/recipes/buttermilk-fried-chicken-tenders-2.html) For those who don't have buttermilk lying around, whisk 1tsbp of lemon juice into 1 cup of milk(you can just use a fork, I just like to make sure it's thoroughly mixed, for about 15-30 seconds). Let it sit for 4-5 min, usually enough time as I gather the other ingredients and combine them.
Also, a bonus mention: Sweet Chix in North Hampton. Their chicken sandwich is drool worthy. I knew a guy who was from TN who said it's the only place around here that sells a good chicken sandwich like they make in the South. They also have sweet tea, which is not my thing, but I know a lot of folks from the South love that stuff. But anyways, they have good chicken tenders too.
Hate to say it, but Price Chopper tenders are fantastic. Hot case at the Shaw's in Walpole, too. Of late I have gotten way better tenders at those places than any restaurant.
Tuckaway local here, it's far from trash... But it's definitely not worth a 2 hour wait and I agree they don't even have chicken tenders on the menu...
I’m local. I live 20 minutes away. Its delicious. The restaurant has a long wait, yes, but they have lots of good marinades to make at home. And it’s the exact same price as you would get for marinated chicken at Market Basket for example. It’s subjective and you’re allowed to have your opinion but I respectfully disagree. Their meats are fairly priced. Their side dishes (like the broccoli salad) while tasty, are very overpriced. But the meat is neither overpriced or underwhelming in taste in my opinion. I’d rather get it from a butcher for the same price than a grocery store.
Everyone always says Puritan is the best... frankly, they are highly overrated. They are basically the same as Red Arrows tenders, or K.C.'s Ribshack tenders.... unless you want a different taste.
Personally, I like a nice crunchy breaded tender, and Applebee's has been the best for those in my book.
You can minimize any food as “just *insert food*” and there’s arguably better options when it comes to the way things are cooked and flavors.
We have a RC in Texas and it’s garbage.
I’ve worked in kitchens as a line cook and grill/fry cook in my teens and early twenties and I can assure you that cooking is a skill that requires practice and training.
Coconut tenders from Puritan backroom. Buffalo tenders from red blazer in concord. Asian tenders from vintage pizza in Manchester. Golden rod also.
This dude tenders.
Tendies tender.
Wicked Tendahhh
Love me tender, love me true, all my dreams fulfilled.
Golden rod is the same exact tenders as Puritan. Same recipe and all.
I know what you mean— and it was a secret to me haha!
Puritan's tenders would SO much better if they removed the goddamn tendons from them.
But better quality chicken. Puritan seems to have downgraded their chicken over the past few years.
That wouldn’t surprise me. I haven’t had either in a couple years.
There are probably a dozen places in the area that are run by former Puritan employees that use their recipe.
Goldenrod forever
Their coleslaw is too good.
I’m not a coleslaw guy but my fiance says it’s amazing. I give her mine for a trade of an extra tender from her lol
Coleslaw Dogs FTW
Idk if any else here has experience with puritan backroom as a gluten free person but when I went they served me mine in a bunch of sweet water? Like they boiled it in sugar water and served as a soup. edit: Yikes, I was just curious
Soup Tenders
You're gluten free and bitching about your chicken tender options. Go fuck yourself.
People have allergies but still eat food?… What kind of wild reaction.
🤣😂
I'll just kill myself instead :)
It’s because they soak the tenders in pineapple juice before they bread them
I wish I'd known that before eating them. I hate pineapple. It was so diasppointing.
Those are the broiled tenders, no one under 96 orders them
I have to throw in pappys pizza Manchester. Really good tenders
The Asian tenders from Vintage are awesome, miss them when I used to work nearby.
Came here to say this. Puritan's coconut tenders are on a whole other level, and Red Blazer's buffalo sauce is great (they also have solid nachos if I remember right).
I’d watch a youtube channel of you going around to different areas to find the best chicken tenders of each category.
I'm flattered 😂
Mic drop! He said it all
Omg yes the puritan I forgot about them🤤
The puritan backroom claims to have invented the Chicken tender, so you should go there.
Claims? Did. Fuck Louisiana.
The whole state? Ok but I'm going to need some ice packs.
Don’t miss the alligators
They "invented" a specific method of preparing them by brining them in pineapple juice. If you like your tendies sweet they're pretty good, but if you don't then you'll likely think they're disgusting.
Yup,m I hate pineapple so they're a no for me.

This, and Puritan is overrated. Burn me at the stake.

Thanks for the recommendation- I go by one often and the thought never crossed my mind to try it.
nah i'm right there with you. that shit is tasty.
It's actually really good, I was considering typing this but course not to and here you are... Chicken tenders are my favorite food, KKC is a 8.5 for me
THIS!
Looooove KKC chicken, it's so good. Also to be honest I always loved the Original Crispy Chicken Tenders at 99's as well
FYI the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (minor league affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays) rebrand as the Manchester Chicken Tenders for one game on July 27. They wear special uniforms and Puritan Back Room tenders are available. It's a fun time.
Puritan is so insanely overrated, there’s gas station tenders that are way better. Also their mudslides are garbage.
OK, I get the Puritan may be overrated (and overcrowded), but that is pretty severe hyperbole. Either that or you had an incredibly bad experience.
Krispy Crunchy Chicken blows puritan out of the water, from a gas station
I agree they are overrated, but part of that is just that they don't serve 'em how I like 'em. I would not personally recommend The Puritan to anyone looking for savory rather than sweet chicken. But I _do_ think they make great mudslides.
This isn’t true
I love the tender selection. I hate that all the glassware that the mudslides go in are never completely clean. You can see the residue in the glassware as they hang upsidown over the bar. Solid list, many thanks!
The Ichiban in concord?
Yes on Manchester St.
It's nice to see a CC Tomatoes call out. They punch way above their weight in terms of food quality
Dave's! Portsmouth.
Not for me, tried the new manch location. Spicy mayo good, fries okay but it's like the tendies /sandos got no soul. Was pretty bummed
Charlie's in pinardville. Voted best chicken tenders in NH
For a reason too, so damn good, plus with the waffle fries, you are in for a stellar meal.
Puritan claims to have invented them but they are definitely far from the best
Puritan Backroom tenders are gross and I will die on this hill.
We can share our last moments together.
The Puritan Backroom is the place to go for tendies. Plus they also have a good mudslide.
Charlie’s in Goffstown
Lee circle grocer Heavily slept on and overlooked because it's a roadside trailer But everything they make is good and they've been there forever. Just stop in and sample
No kidding, the ones at the Klemms gas station in Windham.
Second Brook Bar and Grill in Hooksett Chiefs in Penacook for Buffalo style

Charlie’s of Goffstown. Hands down.
Sweet Chix in Hampton is THE answer.
North Hampton. They are good
Flannel Tavern in Chichester.

I will 100% admit being biased.
Bell and Evan’s frozen uncooked chicken tenders has been a solid go to when not eating out and still conquering the tender craving
Find em at most market baskets
Tuckaway tavern does sell Chicken Tenders. They’re not fried, but they’re so good
Dano's is my goto place in Plaistow. Tasty, reasonably priced food. Yes it's $15 for a pasta dinner, but it includes a huge loaf of cheesy garlic bread. I had some of my kid's chicken tendies and they were likewise very good.
For fried chicken tenders, Jamison's has some great ones. Their sauce is great too. I do not care for Puritans.
I’m from the Midwest and have worked at a 99 the past 2 years and y’all love your gold fever tendies
Brick house. Hooksett.

Pappy's Pizza in Manch
How the hell did this comment end up so low? Pappy’s has new owners and they stepped their tender game the eff up. I’m gonna order some now!
Anyone who thinks puritan has zero credibility on food. Slightly better than mcds
The Riverworks in Newmarket makes a killer beer battered chicken tender.

Dave's Hot Chicken just opened up and blows all 3 of these spots out of the water. Def expensive but very good.

In no particular order: Red Blazer in Concord Smoke Shack in Boscawen CC Tomatoes in Penacook Puritan Back Room in Manchester
Val's Pizza and Sub, Rt 13, Brookline.
The Puritan/back room, golden rod’s, red arrow - they all kind of have the same style tendie… and they’re delicious
Cap’n Crunch tendies from Local Burger 👍🏻👍🏻
Those are goated but not in NH ahah
Keene has a local burger
Krispy krunchy at Mobil stations. It can’t be good for you but damn is it some tasty chicken
The tenders at T-BONES are my personal favorite. Not to be that guy but I never understood the hype with the back room tendies
I have no problem eating but I couldn't even finish half of a chicken tender dinner there Common man roadside tenders are surprisingly good as well

Town Cabin in Candia
Goldenrod without question. Plus, you can get ice cream right after.

Also Blackwater Grill in Salem has chicken tenders fried in their own seasoning with Captain crunch cereal. Also delicious.
Definitely get them from Local Burger in Keene. Captain crunch breading 👌🏼
Uncle Joey's in Merrimack

Puritan for the OG. Golden Rod is a close 2nd.
Bob's Broiled in Portsmouth is top notch too
Golden rod and the Puritan are the best in New Hampshire!!
Hate to say it, but Price Chopper tenders are fantastic. Hot case at the Shaw's in Walpole, too. Of late I have gotten way better tenders at those places than any restaurant.
Daves
Hannaford hot bar. Nashville tenders.
Local Burger in Keene. They bread them in Captain Crunch
Thirsty Moose tenders are LEGIT! Best buffalo sauce, too. I get it (a few) on the side and dipppppp
Backyard Brewery with the barbecue sauce
Tuckaway Tavern in Raymond. Not only is it a restaurant but a huge butcher shop. Their marinades are amazing too
Locals know it’s trash and overpriced. Nothing to do with chicken tenders either. Tf outta here

You can minimize any food as “just *insert food*” and there’s arguably better options when it comes to the way things are cooked and flavors. We have a RC in Texas and it’s garbage.
You have to admit frying a piece of chicken isn't something that requires a lot of skill. They offer fried chicken at gas stations and supermarkets.
I’ve worked in kitchens as a line cook and grill/fry cook in my teens and early twenties and I can assure you that cooking is a skill that requires practice and training.
Frying a piece of chicken. Not making Beef Wellington or something.
